Step 1: Drink fortified beverages Guzzle a glass of milk, which is fortified with Vitamin D, each day. Other drinks, like orange juice, are also fortified with the vitamin – giving you about 400 IUs of the nutrient for each 8 ounces. Tip If you’re allergic to dairy, try soy or rice milk. Step 2: Eat cereal Grab your spoon, bowl, and favorite cereal. Vitamin D is added to breakfast cereal to start your day right. Step 3: Eat eggs Scramble or poach an egg. Vitamin D is found naturally in egg yolk. Tip Check out the carton of your favorite egg substitute. Many are fortified with D. Step 4: Eat fish Add more fish to your diet. Tuna, salmon, herring, mackerel, and sardines are the top fish picks for Vitamin D. Step 5: Use a Vitamin D supplement Take a daily vitamin D supplement if you aren’t able to add D-rich foods to your diet, or enjoy at least 10 minutes of sunshine each day. Did You Know? Garnish it with crushed almonds & cashew nuts Recipe 2: Chicken stuffed eggs 1. Add 1 cup boiled & shredded chicken in a food processor 2. Add salt and pepper to it 3. Now pulse it twice in order to finely mince it 4. Leave it as is for a while 5. Add 1 tbsp mayonnaise in a bowl 6. Add 2 tsp finely chopped onion in this 7. Also add 1 tsp coriander leaves 8. Then add 1 tsp lemon juice 9. Mix all these ingredients well 10. Now, remove the minced chicken and add it to this mixture 11. Next, take 2 hard-boiled eggs 12. Cut them in half and remove their yolks 13. Using a spoon, fill the egg whites with the prepared chicken mixture 14. We have here 100 g of salmon slices 2. First apply some salt on the fish 3. Then add some lemon juice 4. Now, let the fish rest for 5-10 minutes 5. Add ½ tsp black pepper powder 8. ½ tsp cumin seeds 9. ½ tsp coriander seeds 10. Pinch of turmeric powder 11. Now add to this mixture ½ a ground onion 12. 1 tsp ginger garlic paste 13. Add 2 curry leaves 14. Finally add some salt to taste & some water to make a thick paste 15. Now apply this paste gently on the fish slices 16. Allow the fish to rest for 1 hr in the fridge 17. After 1 hour, take out the fish 18. Take a non-stick pan 19. Add 1 tsp oil 20. Add the fish & let it cook till it turns brown & crisp 21. Turn it over and cook on both sides 22. This dish tastes best when served hot Not only is this dish healthy, but it makes for a great dinner option. Recipe 2: Mango yogurt drink 1. Put 150 gm curd yogurt in a blender 2. Add cubes of 1 mango to it 3. Blend them together 4. Pour this in a glass 5. This easy zero waste soy milk recipe produces a beverage very similar in taste and texture to Vanilla Silk soy milk. EcoPeaceful shop: http://amzn.to/2oSe9mU EcoPeaceful Hemp Nut Milk Bag: http://amzn.to/2pyOLk3 While I love Silk, I'm not a fan of all the packaging, and since being inspired to have a more zero waste home, I've found it's an easy way to cut back. Commercial soy milk containers can be recycled, but the caps cannot, which leads to unnecessary waste. Plus, I've found that by making my own zero waste soy milk, I'm also free to add a little extra calcium (I don't drink that much milk every day, so it's nice to be able to tinker with what I add to the milk). Ingredients: 2 cups dried organic yellow soybeans 4 c. + 1 litre water 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 Tablespoon Vanilla (Optional) 1/4 - 1/3 cup maple syrup or sugar (optional), to taste (you'll want to add closer to 1/3 cup to equal the sweetness of Silk soymilk) 1/8 teaspoon xanthan gum (optional) blender nut milk bag (use cotton or hemp, as it is unsafe to pour boiling water through polyester). Calcium carbonate, Vitamin D tablets and B12 tablets You'll want to begin by placing 2 cups of dried soybeans in a container with about 4 cups of water. Place in the refrigerator (notes: some people recommend the counter, but I prefer the fridge, because it prevents the soybeans from beginning to ferment, and I think the final product tastes better. Optional: for a less bean-y tasting milk, once the soybeans have doubled in bulk, drain the soaking water and place the beans in a large saucepan filled with warm water. Using a potato masher, gently smash the soybeans to loosen the clear membrane covering the beans. You don't want to turn the beans into pulp - just enough to separate the bean from its covering. Skim the bean membranes from the surface. (This is a bit time consuming, so if you don't feel like it, don't worry. The milk will still taste great, thanks to the next step) The real key to reducing the beany flavour from the soy milk is to blend the beans with boiling water (and yes, there's a body of research surrounding this). Boil 1 litre of water and place the drained beans in your blender two cups at a time (you can do several batches if you have a small blender). Pour boiling water over the beans and blend thoroughly. Pour the liquid bean mixture into your nut milk bag over a large saucepan. You will need to gently squeeze the bag, or leave it hanging for a few minutes until the liquid has mostly drained out (most nut milk bags have a drawstring for this purpose). Give the nut milk bag a good squeeze to get rid of any remaining liquid. Add 1/4 teaspoon salt and (optional) sweetening, flavouring, and 1/8 teaspoon xanthan gum. Allow the milk to simmer on a low temperature for 15-20 minutes. Once the mixture is finished cooking, fortify your soy milk with Calcium, Vitamin D, and B12. The mixture will have reduced somewhat in cooking. Add enough water so that you are left with 8 cups of milk. Pour into mason jars or carafes, and refrigerate. I really love the way this soy milk turns out. My family has been drinking it for several weeks and we're big fans. If you want to change it up, you can even add a little cocoa powder as well for a chocolate effect! Why zero waste soy milk? Of course, your time is also worth something, and I understand not everyone will want to take the time to make their own soy milk each week. But it is also an investment in your health. Here’s something that might surprise you: Although asthma medications can help control symptoms in the case of an emergency attack, they can actually sometimes make asthma symptoms even worse long term. Most asthma medications also have a host of side effects due to how they affect the endocrine system and the immune system. Research shows some asthma drugs might contribute to problems including mood changes, acne, yeast growth and weight gain — plus over time they might hinder normal immune functions that make allergic and asthmatic reactions more frequent. (2) What are some effective, holistic ways of treating asthma that can help prevent attacks instead? Home remedies for asthma that don’t require taking prescription medications or even using inhalers include limiting irritant exposure, reducing food allergies, improving gut health, supplementing with vitamin D or getting more naturally from the sun, and maintaining a healthy weight. What Is Asthma? Asthma is a condition characterized by difficulty breathing and narrowing of the airways leading to the lungs (including the nose, nasal passageways, mouth and larynx). Some of the most beneficial foods to include in your asthma diet plan are: Brightly colored carotenoid foods: This compound gives fruit and vegetables their orange or red color and can help reduce asthma attacks. Carotenoids are the basis of vitamin A, which is involved in the maintenance of healthy mucous membranes that line the air passageways. Severity of asthma correlates with low vitamin A, so increase your intake of things like root veggies, sweet potatoes, carrots, leafy greens and berries. A study of 68,000 women showed that those who ate more tomatoes, carrots and leafy greens had much lower rates of asthma and that people prone to asthma tended to have low levels of circulating carotenoids in their blood. Vitamin E and vitamin C foods: Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and helps detoxify the body, which is why some research suggests that consuming more vitamin C reduces wheezing and inflammation. In this condition, there is a loss of the bone mineral density that ,makes the bones thin, fragile and brittle. Such bones are easily breakable and hence, one becomes very susceptible to fractures, especially of the hip, spine, wrist and shoulders. ----------------------------- Symptoms: • Characterized by thinning of bones • Loss of bone mineral density ----------------------------- Recipes based on the above food groups: Recipe 1: Salmon & cucumber salad 1. Peel and chop ½ cucumber in a bowl 2. Add 1 tsp chopped jalapeno 3. Now, chop and add 1 tbsp coriander leaves 4. Next add 2 tsp chopped mint leaves 5. Mix all these ingredients well and rest aside 6. Take 1 tsp olive oil in a small bowl 7. Add 1 tsp soy sauce 8. 1 tsp lemon juice 9. Also add salt and pepper to taste 10. Mix this well 11. Now, take 100 gm salmon and rub it with 1 tsp lemon juice, salt and pepper 12. Cook this piece on a non-stick pan till it’s done on both sides for about 5-8 min 13. Next, add the prepared dressing on the fish 14. Allow the fish to cook for a minute so that it can absorb the flavor 15. Finally, serve it with the prepared cucumber salad on the side 16. Your tasty and healthy dinner dish is ready Recipe 2: Finger millet dish 1. Take ½ cup split black lentil (urad dal) in a bowl 2. Add 1 tbsp fenugreek seeds to this 3. Soak it in 2 cups of water for about 2-3 hours 4. Now grind this to make a fine paste 5. Next, take 1 cup of finger millet flour in a big bowl 6. Add the black lentil and fenugreek paste to it 7. Also add 3 cups of water and stir till everything is mixed well This should have a dosa batter consistency. Now we have keep this batter overnight for fermentation 8. Next spread and heat 1 tsp oil on a non stick pan 9. Take spoonful of dosa batter and spread evenly on the pan 10. Put 1 tsp oil or clarified butter (ghee) at the edges of the dosa 11. Cook it for 1 min and remove in a plate 12. Drizzle over the salad wih parsley and serve. 3 quinoa and hard boiled egg recipe 300 calories (1 serving) Ingredients 1/4 cup quinoa 1 cup water 1 hard boiled egg 1/3 cup broccoli florets 1/2 tbsp pumpkin seeds 3 grape tomatoes, halved 1 tsp. chopped fresh parsley 1 tsp extra-virgin olive oil 1 tsp white vinegar 1/8 tsp ground black pepper Preparation Bring quinoa and water to a boil in a saucepan. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until quinoa is tender and water has been absorbed, 5 to 10 minutes. Set aside to cool. Toast the pumpkin seeds in a small pan, until they start popping and set a side. Bring a medium pan with 1/4 cup of water to the boil, add the broccoli florets, cover and cook for 3 minutes.
