We are still finalizing the floor plan and still trying to think of all the things we need to incorporate while keeping the cost down so any ideas, thoughts, or comments would be welcomed! **NOTE** The model is not a true representation of the building process. There will be a layer of insulation and a barrier that goes on top of the concrete before the soil! Jump straight to the last minute of the video if you just want to see the model and how it is made. Modern-old Japan mud house: smart & bioclimatic on a budget

15:21
To bring natural homes into the 21 Century, architect Tono Mirai designed “Future House”: a home that blends earth building and traditional joinery with modern design. Located in Miura, Kanagawa (about an hour and a half south of Tokyo), this fusion home was built for a businessman and his wife and 3 children. The client wanted a healthy and natural home as an escape from his daily commute to Tokyo, but wanted something modern. Mirai designed a home oriented to the south so that its earthen floors and walls (of traditional Japanese mud plaster) can act as heat sinks for the winter sun. He built vents into the outer walls to naturally control the flow of air. The extensive living roof also acts as an insulator. Mirai calls it a “very natural way” to insulate, noting that the temperature difference between outside and inside the roof can be more than 10 degrees. With all the passive solar and natural venting, the home doesn’t need AC or heating (beyond a small wood stove) and it delivers a natural air quality and “peacefulness” requested by the client. http://www.tonomirai.com/#!wg-english/c1cdj

Incredible Dome Home Built with Earth Bags - Sustainable SuperAdobe House

07:13
To learn more about Seb and Isa's earth bag "ecodome" home, and their off-grid piece of paradise, check out their website here: http://www.eco-dome.ca/ They have solar power, propane, and a rocket stove, and they're planting native trees, mushrooms, etc. along a path to create a permaculture food source on their property. They also have a tipi and a yurt, in addition to the earthbag structure, where people can come to spend some time in nature, enjoy the trails they've set up, and learn different skills from basket weaving to building a rocket stove. Seb and Isa are two very inspiring and hard working people who are a pleasure to be around. It's also very nice to see people putting their beliefs and ideals into action. Their sustainable off grid project is called La Nature à l'état Pur. The eco dome is built using plans for a SuperAdobe home, which they learned how to build in California at the CalEarth Institute. You can check out their website here to learn about their courses and programs: http://www.calearth.org/ CalEarth was founded by architect Nader Khalili: "Cal-Earth, the California Institute of Earth Art and Architecture, is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to providing solutions to the human need for shelter through research, development, and education in earth architecture. We envision a world in which every person is empowered to build a safe and sustainable home with their own hands, using the earth under their feet." Thanks for watching! Incredible Mini Earthship Style Cabin - Tiny Off Grid House with Solar Power

05:58
In this video, we tour a mini earth ship style cabin at the Terra Perma community (http://terraperma.ca/en) to learn how the building is designed to produce heat, water, and power; all while being 100% off-grid. The interior design of the tiny house is not only functional, but incredibly beautiful as well: It features relief cob sculptures on the interior walls, a dazzling recycled bottle wall, and floor to ceiling south facing windows. The tiny home away from home was built using over 200 recycled tires that were filled with earth and stacked in a semi circle to create the main wall of the cabin. This wall was then covered (backfilled) with a mound of earth to create a thermal mass that will store energy from the sun and help keep the home at a stable temperature year-round. To mitigate temperature fluctuations, there is a wood stove and radiant in-floor heating for cold months, and when it's warm out, there's a low-tech air conditioning system that cools indoor air by circulating it through a pipe that is buried under the mound of earth at the back of the house, and bringing it back into the house at a cooler temperature. The metal roof is built on an angle to optimize rainwater collection (their rainwater ducts had not yet been installed when we were there), and the overhang at the front provides shade to the structure during the summer to avoid overheating. To power the in-floor heating system, the air pump, the lights, and the electrical outlets, there is a 1000 Watt solar power system installed behind the cabin. You'll notice that there is no toilet or shower inside the earthship. To keep things simple they built an outhouse toilet, and a communal shower block for all of the eco-lodges (kind of like what you'd find at a campground). Terrasol is one of several miniature green building structures at Terra Perma that are rented to the public as vacation rentals. They're also a great way for people to experience living in different types of sustainable, hand built structures to see what living off grid is like. In addition to the earthship, they have a mini cob and straw bale house, 2 yurts, a tiny house, and a mini cordwood cabin. Terra Perma has property lots for sale for anyone who wishes to live in the permaculture community, and they also have cooperative business opportunities for eco-entrepreneurs. Mat and I met Elan from Terra Perma during the tiny house festival in Lantier, Quebec in July 2016 and adjusted our filming schedule to stop by and check out the super cool buildings he was helping to put up in Harrington, Quebec, Canada. We camped in our van at Terra Perma for 2 nights and had fun exploring their mini sustainable buildings, swimming in their private lake, and tasting their homemade maple syrup! To learn more about the Terra Perma project and their eco-lodge rentals, check out their website here: http://terraperma.ca/en You can also follow Terra Perma on Facebook here: http://facebook.com/terrapermaqc If you'd like to book a stay in the Terrasol mini earthship you can rent it out on airbnb here: https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/9540250 Thanks for watching! NATURAL BUILDING - FOUNDATIONS AND MATERIAL OPTIONS

05:31
Get the full video course here: http://www.members.thiscobhouse.com/online-cob-house-workshop/ The first part of building your cob home will be the foundation. This is the first detail to consider for building any structure, and the information presented in this video is relevant to just about any natural building you might construct. The foundation is a unified, stable base which holds the weight of your walls, upper floors, roof, and any live loads. It also distributes the weight of the house over a large area and prevents it from sinking into the ground, which can be catastrophic to a building’s structure. You must build on solid, dry ground. Foundations can be built using a variety of materials, such as: stone, concrete, and gravel. A good foundation is vital to the life of your building and it should be given the consideration it deserves as a critical piece of the structure. Foundations for cob buildings can include the rubble trench below ground and the above-ground stem wall that holds the cob walls. The rubble trench below ground level works with the stem wall to further distribute the weight of the building evenly, to provide water drainage around the structure, and to anchor the building into the ground which limits movement of the building’s walls. The stem wall, which sits above ground on top of the rubble trench, extends up at least 1 ½ feet. The stem wall acts as protection for the walls and floors from water damage. It acts as a moisture break so that water does not seep up from the ground into the walls. Water runoff along the ground is not able to touch the cob portion of the walls, and water splash back from rainfall cannot reach that high. Its important for your foundation to protect your walls from water since your cob walls will deteriorate if they are soaked by it. Even in arid climates, it is not recommended to build the cob walls starting at the ground level as this shortens the life of the structure. Especially for massive earthen building, the importance of foundations cannot be overemphasized. Do your due diligence and plan for a solid, strong foundation. If your foundation is well designed, your building will enjoy a much longer life. From here on, we will be focusing on how to build a simple, yet effective, continuous (monolithic) foundation consisting of a rubble trench and a stem wall. Passive Solar House Design Utilization in Bush House Located in Margaret River, Australia - This house is known as Bush House. It was Designed by Archterra Architects Located in an existing clearing within a section of remnant Marri/Jarrah bushland, this owner-built bush pavilion designed by Archterra Architects seeks to distil into built form, the feelings of camping under a simple sheltering tarpaulin... Diagrammatically, the houses' simple rectangular plan is separated east-west into sleeping and living zones and delineated by a change in floor level and a thick rammed earth wall that continues through the house into the outdoors. The rammed earth wall also defines the entry approach from the detached vehicle parking area. We are using compressed earth block for our floor in our off grid rammed earth house. It has been a learning process, but we have become pretty good at making CEB's. I built the press that we are using, and it has been holding up very well so far. By this point, we have made thousands of bricks.

What we would call the atmosphere or the ambience is called chi If the design and placement of your home is in harmony with these energies then health well-being and prosperity may result Feng Shui simply maps these energies and places you in harmony with them Johey & Mike's Feng Shui Journey Johey had learned some Feng Shui and applied it to her Unit She had seen some fantastic results so she decided that her & Mike would love to build their dream home with Feng Shui from the very beginning At the initial consultation using their birth-details along with their occupations & interest, a precise orientation to look for was chosen Johey & Mike searched for an appropriate site Starting with the site, the exact orientation is chosen, the floor plan is laid out, the house is divided into the eight sectors of the compass each one of the 8 sectors has a different quality of Chi The rooms are designed so that the energy matches the function of the space and each person is perfectly positioned The design, Layout and interior decoration is informed by the energy map and your personal style We work with your Builder, Draftsperson or architect to ensure the plans are just right We can also recommended an Architect for you Here are some of our projects and designs that we have worked on This is the Currumbin Waters home designed for a young professional couple. The exact orientation of the home the orientation of the important features such as the door the bed and the home office are all chosen using their birth details their occupations and their interests This house is the Samford house it too was designed using the same information, of using the birth details to find the exact orientation for the home and the placement of all the rooms and that each family member is matched to the engine map of the home this house also includes passive solar eco design components Well Johey & Mike eventually built their dream home called the Kholo house It's on a beautiful residential estate The bedroom is located in the energies that represent rest and rejuvenation Here we have a modern ensuite it shows you that the design does not have to have an asian architectural feel This is the floor-plan for an eco home there will be built using straw bale and rammed earth The house also employs sacred geometry besides classical Feng Shui theories embedded in the design of the house square the circle and the vesica piscis Here's another eco home this home has an open central court-yard so that there is passive ventalation Get the home of your dreams get the Feng Shui advantage www.thefengshuiadvantage.com http://youtu.be/fExTyREvQHY

Branch Studio uses rammed earth to build Melbourne house extension

04:24
This moody Melbourne house extension by local studio Branch Studio Architects features dark rammed-charcoal walls, window nooks and an outdoor bathtub.Branch Studio Architects was asked to extend an existing house for a couple to create a master suite with a bedroom, an en-suite bathroom and extra storage space. The 1990s house "posed little architectural significance and interacted poorly with its context", according to the architects, who decided to design the extension as a separate structure that links to the original structure via a corridor."The strategy for dealing with the existing building was for the additions to be 'semi-detached' from the existing residence, this creates a separation from the main house," explained the architects."It gives the pavilion its own identity amongst the landscape, while also providing the private spaces contained within 'room to breathe' and a sense of calm, intimacy away from the large open plan family home."The 85-square-metre rectilinear volume has been positioned to slot between existing large trees on the site. The structure named A Pavilion in the Trees was then manipulated to make the most of the surroundings. The glazed wall at the western end of the extension is angled to offer a view through a large clearing between the trees, while two extruded windows on the pavilion's northern and southern walls extend out towards the trees, providing window seats inside. The dark material palette of charcoal, timber panelling and steel is intended to weather and patina over time so that the structure further blends in with its surroundings. These materials are also left exposed inside the pavilion, where they are accompanied by bluestone tiles in the bathrooms, and concrete and steel joinery. The stripped-back palette is intended to help reflect the time of day. "The discrete, earthly approach to the lighting also allows the tones and textures of the individual materials to reflect the ambience of the current external climate at any given time," said the architects."A moody grey day outside will impart those connotations over the internal spaces," they continued."Alternatively, a bright, sunny day will cast dappled light across the spaces through the tree canopies above."The spaces inside the extension are arranged in a linear plan, leading from the en-suite, through the dressing rooms, and ending with the master bedroom.Rather than walls, the architects used subtle variations in floor level to delineate the different areas.Awalkway leads from the main house to the new en-suite bathroom, which includes indoor and outdoor washing areas separated by large folding glass doors. The outdoor space is shielded by a half-height rammed-earth wall topped with a steel mesh screen to provide privacy, while still allowing views of the treetops and sky.Behind the bathroom, a central wooden wardrobe divides the dressing room into his-and-hers spaces named Adrian's robe and Georgina's robe respectively.Georgina's robe features built-in seating made out of silver birch. This wooden bench wraps the wall and also functions as a dressing area.On the other side, in Adrian's Robe, daylight filters in through a narrow clerestory window that runs above the wardrobes to provide glimpses of the tree canopy. The rear wall of the central wardrobe, described by the architects as a "joinery forest", forms the headboard for the master bed.Built-in cabinets, including a day bed and bench seating wrap the bedroom and sliding glazed doors open up to the outdoor space."The connection to the trees from the bedroom is more about being amongst the branches than beneath them and this is most apparent when standing in the large suspended window box or sitting at the very point of the space," said the architects."Where the full height 'cut end' glazing slides open to the outdoors as you hang well above the ground and gaze towards the greenery beyond."Other residential projects by Branch Studio include revamped 1960s house in suburban Melbourne and a lakeside cabin clad in corrugated iron.

The Grande Ronde - Log Home Design - Plan by Gravitas - Modern Home Design

00:21
You can see more of our work and about us at http://www.Gravitas.us and purchase our plans off the shelf at http://www.wholesalehouseplans.com The Grande Ronde is a one of a kind rammed earth home. Rammed earth is a timeless building method in which site soils are compacted in layers to create a solid earth wall. The thermal mass of the rock-like wall slows the transfer of heat and cold, and acts as a cooling element in the summer and a warming element in the winter. Created for the foothills of Boise, Idaho, this rammed earth home was designed to capture full views of the valley below, while blocking the heat of the western sun. Long radial rammed earth walls extend the eave line and create partitioned spaces on the interior and exterior of this home. All on a single level, except for a private office on the roof, this 3400 SF home has a lot of living area. Along the sheltered north wall and set into the hillside are a media room for entertaining, and an exercise room for your own private gym. A north facing outdoor patio captures the coolness of the earth and shelter from the sun on the hottest summer days. The stairwell is designed to act as a solar chimney pulling the heat out of the main level living areas and drawing in cool air from the sun sheltered areas. Entertaining in the kitchen, dining and living is focused around built-in seating and a central fireplace that takes details from the rammed earth walls.

Rammed Earth Pavilion by SilvioRECH+LesleyCARSTENS, Westcliff Johannesburg, South Africa. This building represents an evolution of a South African architectural language. The philosophy was to create a pure, multi-functional space, utilising all the views available on the site and their relevant connection to nature, as well as a series of re-used local materials and in so doing, create an iconic building that represents a contemporary extension of a traditional South African language.

Passive Cooling Strategies

05:16
Go to our Natural Building Blog where we answer questions. http://naturalbuildingblog.com Today I want to talk about passive cooling strategies for keeping your home cool in hot climates. This is a very hot climate and yet our earthbag roundhouse is about 15 degrees Fahrenheit cooler inside than out. So 15 degrees Fahrenheit, 8 degrees Celsius temperature difference with no mechanical cooling systems. No air conditioners, no fans, no anything. It's just passive strategies, natural strategies for keeping the home cool without the use of machinery or electricity. So we'll discuss about 11 different strategies that you can use. They're all very low cost and simple. The first one is the color of your wall -- your exterior wall. You want the walls to have a light color so they reflect the sunlight. One of the most important things is to have wide roof overhangs. This is about 4 feet, a little over one meter. So the sun almost never hits the wall. Because they're high mass walls, if the sun hit the walls frequently, that mass would heat up and eventually that heat would transfer inside. So we keep the sun off the walls as much as possible. Another important strategy is windows. We have casement windows that swing open and catch the prevailing breezes. So the breezes come from this way and these are like a scoop -- a wind scoop -- to pull the wind into the roundhouse. We also have windows on all sides of the house so the breeze is always blowing through. If you look up above the window, we have screened openings above the windows that keep insects out, but let hot air escape this way. And I don't know if you can see it, you might want to come closer. Above the bond beam is a gap of a few inches. In between the rafters there's a gap where hot air can escape. So the hot air is rising and it goes out the top. Also we use thatch roofing and some air passes through the thatch. We also have one of these screened openings above the door as a transom. Let's go inside and I'll show you the earth coupled floor. This is our earth coupled floor right here. What that means is the floor -- the high mass floor -- in this case concrete, but it could be tamped earth, stone, CEBs, brick, recycled brick, whatever. The floor is in direct contact with the earth underneath with a moisture barrier to prevent wicking of moisture. So the floor is absorbing the coolness of the earth. It's very cool, surprisingly cool even in this hot climate where you can start sweating in just a few minutes. So this is surprisingly cool. We also have earthen plaster on the inside. All that mass and this mass partition wall all absorb the coolness of the earth -- the coolness coming up from the earth. And the breezes help all the hot air escape. So the temperature inside stays the same night and day. You don't need an air conditioner or even a fan. It's surprisingly comfortable in here. Some other strategies, you want to look up and see the high ceiling. So there's plenty of space for hot air to rise and escape. There you can see the gap above the bond beam to improve ventilation. The last strategy I'm going to talk about is vegetation -- using plants to keep the building cool. Here we've used a mango tree on the hot southwest side of the house. That's the hottest direction. We have different plants here. So the sun, as you can see, almost never hits the house directiy. And also we have a very large tree above here that protects and shades the house through most of the day. Again, these are all simple, low cost strategies that anyone can do. Very low cost, very simple. You can save a lot of money on energy bills and also help the environment.

It is also referred to as cargotecture, a portmanteau of cargo with architecture. The use of containers as a building material has grown in popularity of the past several years due to their inherent strength, wide availability, and relatively low expense. Homes have also been built with containers because they are seen[who?] as more eco-friendly than traditional building materials such as brick and cement. Construction, Building, Maintenance, Repair... playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL83D28D06BC04F26F more at http://quickfound.net The NAHB builds a house to demonstrate new building methods of home builders. Originally a public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House Wikipedia license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ A house is a home, building, or structure that functions as a habitat for humans or other creatures. The term house includes many kinds of dwellings ranging from rudimentary huts of nomadic tribes to complex structures composed of many systems. English-speaking people generally call any building they routinely occupy "home". The social unit that lives in a house is known as a household. Most commonly, a household is a family unit of some kind, though households may be other social groups, organizations, or individuals... Little is known about the earliest origin of the house and its interior, but it can be traced back to the simplest form of shelters. Roman architect Vitruvius' theories have claimed the first form of architecture as a frame of timber branches finished in mud, also known as the primitive hut. Philip Tabor later states the contribution of 17th century Dutch houses as the foundation of houses today. "As far as the idea of the home is concerned, the home of the home is the Netherlands. This idea's crystallization might be dated to the first three-quarters of the 17th century, when the Dutch Netherlands amassed the unprecedented and unrivaled accumulation of capital, and emptied their purses into domestic space. Communal rooms In the Middle Ages, the Manor Houses facilitated different activities and events. Furthermore, the houses accommodated numerous people, including family, relatives, employees, servants and their guests. Their lifestyles were largely communal, as areas such as the Great Hall enforced the custom of dining and meetings and the Solar intended for shared sleeping beds. Interconnecting rooms During the 15th and 16th centuries, the Italian Renaissance Palazzo consisted of plentiful rooms of connectivity. Unlike the qualities and uses of the Manor Houses, most rooms of the palazzo contained no purpose, yet were given several doors. These doors adjoined rooms in which Robin Evans describes as a "matrix of discrete but thoroughly interconnected chambers." The layout allowed occupants to freely walk room to room from one door to another, thus breaking the boundaries of privacy... Although very public, the open plan encouraged sociality and connectivity for all inhabitants. Corridor An early example of the segregation of rooms and consequent enhancement of privacy may be found in 1597 at the Beaufort House built in Chelsea. It was designed by English architect John Thorpe who wrote on his plans, "A Long Entry through all". The separation of the passageway from the room developed the function of the corridor. This new extension was revolutionary at the time, allowing the integration of one door per room, in which all universally connected to the same corridor. English architect Sir Roger Pratt states "the common way in the middle through the whole length of the house, [avoids] the offices from one molesting the other by continual passing through them." Social hierarchies within the 17th century was highly regarded, as architecture was able epitomize the servants and the upper class. More privacy is offered to the occupant as Pratt further claims, "the ordinary servants may never publicly appear in passing to and fro for their occasions there." This social divide between rich and poor favored the physical integration of the corridor into housing by the 19th century... In the United States, modern house-construction techniques include light-frame construction (in areas with access to supplies of wood) and adobe or sometimes rammed-earth construction (in arid regions with scarce wood-resources). Some areas use brick almost exclusively, and quarried stone...
