PULSE It is a wave of pulse on the arterial vessels wall generated as a result of expansion and elongation of the wall during ventricular systole and diastole. The pulse is a wave of distension and elongation felt in an artery wall due to the contraction of the left ventricle forcing about 60 to 80 millilitres of blood through the already full aorta and into the arterial system. When the aorta is distended, a wave passes along the walls of the arteries and can be felt at any point where a superficial artery can be pressed gently against a bone. The number of pulse beats per minute normally represents the heart rate and varies considerably in different people and in the same person at different times. An average of 60 to 80 is common at rest. Information that may be obtained from the pulse includes: The rate at which the heart is beating. The regularity with which the heart beats occur, i.e. the length of time between beats should be the same. The volume or strength of the beat —it should be possible to compress the artery with moderate pressure, stopping the flow of blood; the compressibility of the blood vessel gives some indication of the blood pressure and the state of the blood vessel wall. Learn to Measure Blood Pressure and Pulse - Medical Videos Step-by-Step Blood Pressure Check If you purchase a manual or digital blood pressure monitor (sphygmomanometer), follow the instruction booklet carefully. The following steps provide an overview of how to take your left arm blood pressure on either a manual or digital blood pressure monitor. Simply reverse the sides to take a blood pressure in your right arm. 1. Locate your pulse Locate your pulse by lightly pressing your index and middle fingers slightly to the inside center of the bend of your elbow (where the brachial artery is). If you cannot locate your pulse, place the head of the stethoscope (on a manual monitor) or the arm cuff (on a digital monitor) in the same general area.2. Secure the cuff Thread the cuff end through the metal loop and slide the cuff onto your arm, making sure that the stethoscope head is over the artery (when using a manual monitor.) The cuff may be marked with an arrow to show the location of the stethoscope head. The lower edge of the cuff should be about 1 inch above the bend of your elbow. Use the fabric fastener to make the cuff snug, but not too tight. Place the stethoscope in your ears. Tilt the ear pieces slightly forward to get the best sound. 3. Inflate and deflate the cuff If you are using a manual monitor: Hold the pressure gauge in your left hand and the bulb in your right. Close the airflow valve on the bulb by turning the screw clockwise. Inflate the cuff by squeezing the bulb with your right hand. You may hear your pulse in the stethoscope. Watch the gauge. Keep inflating the cuff until the gauge reads about 30 points (mm Hg) above your expected systolic pressure. At this point, you should not hear your pulse in the stethoscope. Keeping your eyes on the gauge, slowly release the pressure in the cuff by opening the airflow valve counterclockwise. The gauge should fall only 2 to 3 points with each heartbeat. (You may need to practice turning the valve slowly.) Listen carefully for the first pulse beat. As soon as you hear it, note the reading on the gauge. This reading is your systolic pressure (the force of the blood against the artery walls as your heart beats). Continue to slowly deflate the cuff. Listen carefully until the sound disappears. As soon as you can no longer hear your pulse, note the reading on the gauge. This reading is your diastolic pressure (the blood pressure between heartbeats). Allow the cuff to completely deflate.

Normal blood pressure is important for proper blood flow to the body’s organs and tissues. The force of the blood on the walls of the arteries is called blood pressure. Blood pressure is measured both as the heart contracts, which is called systole, and as it relaxes, which is called diastole. Normal blood pressure is considered to be a systolic blood pressure of 115 millimeters of mercury a diastolic pressure of 70 millimeters of mercury (stated as "115 over 70"). If an individual were to have a consistent blood pressure reading of 140 over 90, he would be evaluated for having high blood pressure. If left untreated, high blood pressure can damage important organs, such as the brain and kidneys, as well as lead to a stroke. High blood pressure is a common disease in which blood flows through blood vessels (arteries) at higher than normal pressures. Measuring Blood Pressure Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood. High blood pressure, sometimes called hypertension, happens when this force is too high. Health care workers check blood pressure readings the same way for children, teens, and adults. They use a gauge, stethoscope or electronic sensor, and a blood pressure cuff. With this equipment, they measure: Systolic Pressure: blood pressure when the heart beats while pumping blood Diastolic Pressure: blood pressure when the heart is at rest between beats Health care workers write blood pressure numbers with the systolic number above the diastolic number. For example: 118/76 mmHg People read "118 over 76" millimeters of mercury. Normal Blood Pressure: Normal blood pressure for adults is defined as a systolic pressure below 120 mmHg and a diastolic pressure below 80 mmHg. It is normal for blood pressures to change when you sleep, wake up, or are excited or nervous. When you are active, it is normal for your blood pressure to increase. However, once the activity stops, your blood pressure returns to your normal baseline range. Blood pressure normally rises with age and body size. Newborn babies often have very low blood pressure numbers that are considered normal for babies, while older teens have numbers similar to adults. Abnormal Blood Pressure Abnormal increases in blood pressure are defined as having blood pressures higher than 120/80 mmHg. The following table outlines and defines high blood pressure severity levels. The ranges in the table are blood pressure guides for adults who do not have any short-term serious illnesses. People with diabetes or chronic kidney disease should keep their blood pressure below 130/80 mmHg. Although blood pressure increases seen in prehypertension are less than those used to diagnose high blood pressure, prehypertension can progress to high blood pressure and should be taken seriously. Over time, consistently high blood pressure weakens and damages your blood vessels, which can lead to complications. Types of High Blood Pressure There are two main types of high blood pressure: primary and secondary high blood pressure. Primary High Blood Pressure Primary, or essential, high blood pressure is the most common type of high blood pressure. This type of high blood pressure tends to develop over years as a person ages. Secondary High Blood Pressure Secondary high blood pressure is caused by another medical condition or use of certain medicines. This type usually resolves after the cause is treated or removed. Blood pressure (BP) is the pressure exerted by circulating blood upon the walls of blood vessels. When used without further specification, "blood pressure" usually refers to the arterial pressure in the systemic circulation. It is usually measured at a person's upper arm. Blood pressure is usually expressed in terms of the systolic (maximum) pressure over diastolic (minimum) pressure and is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). It is one of the vital signs along with respiratory rate, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and body temperature. Normal resting blood pressure in an adult is approximately 120/80 mm Hg. Blood pressure varies depending on situation, activity, and disease states. It is regulated by the nervous and endocrine systems. Blood pressure that is low due to a disease state is called hypotension, and pressure that is consistently high is hypertension. Both have many causes which can range from mild to severe. Both may be of sudden onset or of long duration. Long term hypertension is a risk factor for many diseases, including kidney failure, heart disease, and stroke. Long term hypertension is more common than long term hypotension in Western countries. Long term hypertension often goes undetected because of infrequent monitoring and the absence of symptoms. It is Monday November 4th at 9:45PM and my blood pressure and heart rate are high and I want to document it in facebook and elsewhere. This is an at rest blood-pressure and heart rate. It measures 150 over 97 with a pulse rate of 113 beats per minute. I made a mistake when I took the BP and had to do it over several times, so it went down from a high of 160 over 120 and pulse 125 BPM. Still high though and I am relaxing to try to get it down. The handler can raise your BP and heart rate with the microwave weapon.

This is our first look at the accuracy -- or lack thereof -- of the measurements these smartwatches offer for human information sampling as in step count, heart rate, blood oxygen content and blood pressure. We begin with one of the easiest to test, the heart rate accuracy. In this video we attempt to establish a baseline measurement system to use for watch heart rate comparisons. Five watches are tested, the Kingwear KW88, IQI I4, LEMFO LES1, No.1 D5+ and original No.1 D5. We talk about how to report the overall accuracy of the readings on a scale of 1 - 5 with 1=not even close, 5=practically the same, and also test to see if the watches attempt to continue showing a reading when the sensor is either uncovered or covered with an opaque surface that's not human skin. Another category not shown on the video is the perceived accuracy for high pulse rates over 100, again on a 1-5 scale. Below is the chart of these five watches and additional watches as I have a chance to text them. IF you want a specific watch tested, let me know in the comments and I'll pull it out and report the findings. Since this is an ongoing project, it will be updated continuously, so check below for the latest "update date" and see the latest data. I hope this helps in your smartwatch decision making and your ability to trust -- or not -- the heart rate data from your smartwatch. Try checking for a pulse while dropping your hand toward the floor. Holding your hand up near your head can make your pulse less distinct. Lift up or remove your shirt, hold the stethoscope against your bare chest, and listen. Count each beat as you hear it, and listen for any skipped beats. Find your potential maximum heart rate. This is the highest your pulse rate can get. You will use your potential maximum heart rate to determine your target heart rate. To find yours, follow this formula: 220 - your age = predicted maximum heart rate. Try exercising intensely for 30 minutes. Check your heart rate immediately after (or even during) your exercise. Compare your actual exercising heart rate to your potential maximum rate. The numbers should be fairly close. If you're taking your pulse during exercise, keep your feet moving as you do so or blood might accumulate in your extremities.

The diastolic pressure is when a muffled quality occurs. Please note that the sound is often overestimated because sound can still be heard even after deflation of the cuff. This method is not 100% accurate but will give values within the 10% range. Blood pressure measures the pressure your blood exerts on your blood vessels. During systole, the ventricles contract and push that blood into your vessels, which we can measure via the systolic blood pressure. In diastole, the heart relaxes, and the pressure drops and this is measured via the diastolic blood pressure. Now your BP is highly regulated and depends on your cardiac output. Do you recall what makes up our CO? This includes heart rate and stroke volume (which can further be divided into preload, afterload, and contractility). Preload is filling, and increased filling/fluid increases blood pressure. This is the basis behind why we give IV fluids in hypotensive patients! In fluid overloaded hypertensive patients, we may give anti-hypertensives to get rid of some of this fluid in the form of diuretics. Afterload directly relates to resistance and pressure. The largest way to increase afterload is by decreasing the diameter, or lumen size of your blood vessels. THis increases blood pressure. Meanwhile, in vasodilation, you increase the lumen and decrease pressure. Contractility plays a role in BP as you can pump more blood out. Sympathetic and parasympathetic control really plays a role here, in particular beta 1 receptors. Your body modulates these factors automatically, making sure your blood pressure is appropriate to the situation. Some pathways include the RAAS system and your heart releasing ANP and BNP. Another mechanism is through baroreceptors. These are mechanoreceptors that sense pressure. There are two: Carotid baroreceptors: located in the carotid sinus, these link up to the glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX) Aortic arch baroreceptor: seen in the aorta, these link up to the vagus nerve (CN X). Both ultimately transmit to the solitary nucleus of the medulla. What is the physio behind these receptors? Well, when there is increased blood pressure, that stretches these muscles and receptors and causes depolarization. The more they stretch, the more they depolarize and fire. Your brain senses this as increased BP and will try to lower the sympathetic fight or flight response. You can stimulate this with a carotid massage! Conversely, if you have low BP, there will be less stretch and firing. Your body will notice this as low pressure and will try to compensate by increasing sympathetic firing! That is how your baro receptors work! Our last topic will be on pulse pressure. Pulse pressure is the difference between the systolic pressure and diastolic. Pulse pressure is proportionate to cardiac output, stroke volume, and ventricular compliance. The more blood you're able to pump out, the more your pulse pressure. Increased pulse pressure is seen in exercise, hyperthyroidism, aortic regurgitation, and aortic stiffening. Decreased pulse pressure is seen in low systolic pressure and volume. This is seen in aortic stenosis, cardiogenic shock, cardiac tamponade, and heart failure. Done with this video. In our next video, we will discuss hypertension and related pathology and pharmacology.
