Regardless when it hits you, whether it’s right at the beginning or when you’re getting ready to leave treatment, it is always distressing. “Being told you have breast cancer is a lot of people’s worst nightmare. What we do in the moment is put everything into perspective in order to help women not only be able to cope with it as they go through it but also to start to plan how they are going to get themselves through it,” says Guy Montgomery, director of Psychological Services at Mount Sinai’s Dubin Breast Center in New York City. In this video interview with Sonima.com founder, Sonia Jones, Montgomery describes the importance of providing patients with emotional support through an array of services, including couples therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and hypnosis, to reduce the side effects of cancer treatment, like pain and fatigue, and help minimize distress about the whole process. A breast cancer diagnosis can set in motion a long and often complicated process on the road to recovery. As if focusing on surviving weren't enough, the patient has to consider treatment and/or surgery schedules, financial concerns, transportation issues, the endless list of to-do's at home (i.e., walking the dog, grocery shopping and cooking, etc), and much more. Sometimes patients who don't have the support of family and friends can feel very alone and overwhelmed. This is where having a medical social worker in your corner can be most helpful. “We'll meet with [patients] everywhere. We'll go with them to chemotherapy treatments and medical appointments. We'll visit them on the floor after surgery to make sure a nurse will come home with them to help. [We're with patients] throughout one of the most difficult times in their life from the moment they are diagnosed,” says Yannette Tactuk, a clinical oncology social worker at the Dubin Breast Center of the Tisch Cancer Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. In this video interview with Sonima.com's founder Sonia Jones, Tactuk brings to light the crucial role social workers can play in helping breast cancer patients beat the disease. We needed to worry about treating the cancer and not worry about what was going to happen to us financially because of the cancer," said Greg Bowles, Mercedes' husband.

http://www.healthy-today.net/diseases-and-conditions/cancer/how-to-support-someone-with-cancer/ -- A comprehensive guide on cancer support for families. What can you do to help the one you love fight his or her cancer diagnosis? This guide is aimed at caregivers, family and friends who want to know how to best support your loved one. If getting diagnosed with cancer is the worst possible news a person could get, the second worst news has to be that someone you love has been diagnosed with cancer. While the disease is of course hardest on the actual patient, family and friends are in for a rough ride to. Particularly the caregivers will need a lot of information and cancer support in order to be able to help their loved one - and to cope with the related grief and stress themselves. The very first thing to do is to let the patient know that you will be there for them, that you will help him or her in whatever way you can. Don't be afraid to talk about your feelings either. Don't let the cancer patient feel like he is the elephant in the room. While you definitely want to be "a rock" for the cancer patient you shouldn't feel that you have to solve every problem yourself. You have to accept the fact that you are going to need help too, and that it is okay to ask others for assistance. A support network of several persons, each contributing with whatever they can, is always a great idea. Because after all, who will care for the cancer patient if you are overwhelmed and stressed out? A big part of becoming a great cancer caregiver and/or support person is also to find out as much as you can about the disease. What type of cancer are you dealing with and in what stage? What types of treatment are available? Will your insurance cover the needed therapy? And so on. It is quite daunting to deal with cancer. But you must remember to have fun. Having a loved one diagnosed with cancer does not mean that you must change how you choose to live your life completely. Keep doing the things that give you pleasure, such as reading, seeing movies at the theater, and attending your favorite sporting events. You may need to plan a little more carefully to ensure that these events do not take an unnecessary toll on you, but not enough to where you are not enjoying yourself. cancer support cancer caregiver support cancer support for families cancer and families cancer families cancers effects on family families struggling with cancer cancer what now support and care to patients psychological help for families of people with cancer caring for a cancer patient caring for cancer caring for cancer patients caring for chemo patient Make no mistake though, no matter your situation cancer is difficult to manage. Meaning making has been described as an ongoing process of storying to create and maintain a coherent life story that casts the self or individual as valuable, unique and permanent. Group psychosocial interventions (e.g. support groups) have come to be a common way to address psychosocial challenges posed by breast cancer. Visual artistic expression—in the form of art therapy or art making—shows promise as an avenue for psychosocial support for women with breast cancer. Although there is wide clinical acceptance of the value of art therapy and therapeutic art making in cancer care, there has been very little systematic research on the topic and virtually none about breast cancer. This study is significant for the detailed view it gives of how women with breast cancer understood visual artistic expression to be helpful. The women portrayed visual artistic expression as a flexible avenue for addressing multiple psychosocial needs simultaneously.
