NOTE FROM TED: Please consult with a mental health professional and do not look to this talk for medical advice as the intersection of mental health and nutrition is still an emerging field of study. We've flagged this talk for falling outside TEDx's curatorial guidelines because it oversimplifies interpretations of legitimate studies. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In this critically important talk, clinical psychologist Julia Rucklidge explores a range of scientific research, including her own, showing the significant role played by nutrition in mental health or illness. Julia J Rucklidge, PhD is a Professor of Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. Originally from Toronto, she did her training in neurobiology (McGill) and Clinical Psychology (University of Calgary). Her interests in nutrition and mental illness grew out of her own research showing poor outcomes for children with significant psychiatric illness despite receiving conventional treatments for their conditions. For the last 6 years, she has been investigating the role of micronutrients in the expression of mental illness, specifically ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, anxiety and more recently, stress and PTSD associated with the Canterbury earthquakes. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Learn how important nutrition is in our daily lives! Psychiatric illness treated as nutritional deficiencies. Over 80% of serotonin is found where? NO NOT in the brain. It is in the GUT! This is why there has been such a huge jump in mental illness in America such as ADD, Depression and autism. The culprit is leaky gut which is from antibiotic use early in life. The antibiotics kill the normal gut flora and therefore make it impossible for us to break down the foods we eat properly. Even worse, it also leads to the ability of the larger proteins, such as Gluten, to get directly into the blood stream. This causes systemic inflammation which can lead to autoimmune disorders. Learn the truth about how to make better food choices that can lead to better mental health. Professor Julia Rucklidge, Psychology, College of Science Despite the advent of medications and other therapies over the last 50 years, the rates of mental illness have been on the rise rather than a decline. Over the last decade, scientists have been uncovering an uncomfortable truth: What we eat is affecting our mental health. In this talk, Prof Rucklidge will discuss the data that shows an alarming picture of food choices serving as risk factors to all kinds of psychiatric problems; she will then introduce the recent paradigm shift of using nutrients to treat these challenges, reviewing the evidence to date. The talk will challenge our current treatment regime for mental disorders and suggest one alternative course of action.

Galit Goldfarb begins with her own story -- becoming bulimic as a teen, and determining to learn all she could about science and nutrition in college, and yet still not achieving health. She studied medical science, opening a clinic after her return. But everyone she treated felt better only in the short-term. She was also diagnosed with cancer. She began to learn all about human health, reading from all the scientific fields until she was able to understand the answer: the guerilla diet (food choices that fight back against everything she had learned!). Goldfarb takes us through ancient human history, demonstrating evidence of the earliest humans' health and diet (living into their 70s and eating plants, nuts, fruits, and legumes) and how humans moved shortsightedly away from that diet. Cancer free (without radiation), her final argument is simple -- while an "omnivore" diet may in the short term taste better, in the long term, it is unhealthy, not only for us but for our planet. Galit Goldfarb has worked within the health field for over 22 years. While working in different research laboratories and with many private clients, Galit has written eight books in the fields of health and personal development, including #1 International Bestseller “The Guerrilla Diet & Lifestyle Program” based on her in-depth research into the ideal diet for humans. Galit is a Professional member of the American Nutrition Association, and the American Society for Nutrition, and holds a BSc (honours) in Biochemistry and Nutrition, an MSc in Medical Science with Distinction, and studied Immunology for a Post Graduate Certificate. Galit is currently doing her PhD in Nutrition. Galit offers workshops, speaking engagements, online programs and coaching to help people achieve optimal health. DISCLAIMER: My videos is information only and is not medical advice. I simply inform and also share my personal experiences. If you need medical advice, please see your doctor. Again, my videos are NOT medical advice! This video is about 5 foods to reduce anxiety. Hey it’s Scandinavian Bob here and before we start let me just say that there are no foods that works for everyone and for most people the reduction is of course not as effective as prescription anxiety drugs however these foods can still do a pretty impressive job at reducing anxiety and for some people it works surprisingly well and, of course, natural ways are always prefered over using drugs so with that said, let’s jump in shall we… Foods to reduce anxiety no: 1 Salmon! Salmon should be eaten a couple of times a week because of the high levels of healthy fats that can be found it it. The omega 3 fatty acid is incredible beneficial for brain health and research show they can reduce anxiety and improve mode pretty rapidly. Now, if you hate fish and just can’t stand it then at least be sure to take omega 3 supplements. Foods to reduce anxiety no: 2 Spinach! Spinach is super healthy and it is great for stress and mood issues as well because of its high levels of magnesium. Magnesium is so important for relaxation in many ways. Just to name a couple,It reduces stress hormones and helps increase the neurotransmitter GABA which is responsible for putting the brakes on our overactive system. In addition this spinach also contains potassium. Did you know that Potassium's uses in the body include regulation of the heartbeat and muscle contractions, as well as preservation of cell functions AND it is highly involved with relaxation. So if you have anxiety, eat more spinach. Foods to reduce anxiety no 3 Avocados! This is another very healthy food and I personally love to eat avocados for my own anxiety. They are also rich in potassium and this just to go back to the spinach let me briefly tell you what my anxiety salad looks like. I take one avocado and about 70 grams of spinach and a cup of kale and I put olive oil over it, don’t forget to do that because it helps with the absorption and lastly I sprinkle some Himalayan pink salt over the sallad. Foods to reduce anxiety no 4 Himalayan Salt! Did you know that salt actually can reduce anxiety in and of itself? I have made a whole video about that so I won’t go into it more here but let me just say that it really works. So now this salad has got several healthy ingredients that helps reduce anxiety and if you decide to try it I would suggest that you don’t mix any carbohydrates in it because I have noticed that it works best if you only eat it as it is. Don’t put any pasta or some sugary dressing on it because if you do it will perhaps still work but it will be less effective. If you think ithe salad sounds boring then look at it as a stress or anxiety treatment instead of a meal. I personally eat it on an empty stomach on stressful days and it works surprisingly well. I suspect all the very healthy nutrients and minerals in works in a synergistic way to help increase the anxiety reducing effects of the salt and of the magnesium and potassium. In other words, they help enhance each other. Foods to reduce anxiety and depression no 5 Sauerkraut Sauerkraut fermentation creates conditions that promote the growth of probiotics. Probiotics are bacteria that provide powerful health benefits and and it will do wonders for your gut. Did you know that gut bacteria issues is linked to several health problems with anxiety and depression being one of them. A healthy gut also helps significantly with the production of serotonin and you probably know that serotonin is highly involved with us being able to control anxiety, for example. If you do not like Sauerkraut then some yogurts can work almost as well but sauerkraut really is to prefer. Alright, that’s it for today. please do try the anxiety salad I mentioned and let me know in the comments down below how it worked for you and consider subscribing for more anxiety tools and tricks. . Speaking of tools and tricks, if you would like to know favorite tools for anxiety are, I have made a list of all the things I have found to work best for me, over at my website. You can find that list by typing into your URL address bar browser and that’s a list with tools I have found works really well for my own anxiety. ALright, that’s it for today, thank you so much for watching and have a happy and awesome day. Thank you for watching today’s video foods for mental health

If you need medical advice, please see your doctor. Again, my videos are NOT medical advice! Hey it’s Bob from Scandinavia here. Let’s talk about what foods to avoid for anxiety and what’s best left in the store. It might not be fun to learn what we shouldn’t eat but everyone of us wants to feel good so let’s take a look at them right away. Foods to avoid for anxiety No: 1 Fruit juice We have three main sugars. Sucros, fructose and glucose. Out of these three fructose is the one that is added to flavored drinks, such as fruit juice. Now the problem with fructose is that Unlike glucose, which is metabolized widely in the body, fructose is metabolized almost completely in the liver. This makes it problematic for the body to handle and for many this will show itself as anxiety. Fructose is found in fruits and vegetables but those are not bad because the fiber hinders our absorption of the fructose. However when they add fructose to drinks they remove all the fiber, leaving only the bad sugar that can give us anxiety. Foods to avoid for anxiety No: 2 Gluten For some people gluten have been found to be a massive anxiety trigger. The experts are disagreeing a bit what the exact mechanisms behind this are but it is most likely due to glute causing inflammation in the body and..more importantly, in this case, inflammation in the brain. So try eliminating wheat, barley and rye products from your for a few weeks and see if you notice any improvement. And, to combat the inflammation, one super powerful thing you can do is to put a tablespoon of turmeric in a glass of water and add some black pepper to it and finally you add some olive oil to it. This is a powerful anti inflammatory drink that I personally drink a few times a week...it tastes like shi..ehm...not good, but it does wonders for the body, Foods to avoid for anxiety No:3 Processed foods For example , If you eat lots of processed meat, refined cereals, high-fat dairy products or Those small pizzas you buy and put in your microwave oven...well, did you are more likely to get anxiety. Yup, people eating those kinds of foods have higher levels of anxiety and depression than people who avoid those foods? This is just the way it is and I’m not pointing fingers here since I sometimes eat processed foods myself... aaaand when I do, I really notice an increase in my anxiety levels if I too much of them or if I eat them several days in a row. Ok there they are try to avoid, or at least reduce these foods, as much as you can and in just a few weeks you could be feeling much better. However IF you are in a hurry and would like some relief right away then faster solutions do exist. If you are interested in an extra strength treatment that could potentially eliminate you anxiety altogether then type it to your url address bar browser or click the link under this video. It is an extra strength treatment that I personally use and for me it works extremely well so if you want to learn more about that then click the link under this video right now or you can keep watching my videos for additional free anxiety tools and tricks. Scrolling through our social media feeds feels like a harmless part of our daily lives. But is it actually as harmless at seems? According to social media expert Bailey Parnell, our growing and unchecked obsession with social media has unintended long term consequences on our mental health. As social media continues to become part of the fabric of modern life – the “digital layer” – abstinence is becoming less of an option. Bailey think it’s high time we learned to practice safe social before it’s too late. What are the common triggers? How are they affecting you over time? How can you create a more positive experience online? Bailey covers this and more in “Is Social Media Hurting Your Mental Health?” Bailey Parnell was recently named one of Canada's Top 100 Most Powerful Women. She is an award-winning digital marketer, public speaker and businesswoman with a talent for helping people tell better stories. Her work and expertise have been featured on CBC, CTV & in other local Toronto media. Bailey recently founded SkillsCamp, a soft skills training company where they help people develop the essential skills needed for professional success. She also currently works in digital marketing at Ryerson University. Bailey is a frequent public speaker having spoken to more than 10 thousand people. She primarily speaks about social media, personal branding, and media and mental health. She guest lectured her first MBA class at 21-years-old and has been the youngest speaker as multiple academic conferences. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Communication and Culture with a research focus on social media and mental health, and holds an honours BA from the RTA School of Media at Ryerson. "Have you ever had a gut feeling or butterflies in your stomach? Has hunger ever changed your mood? Our bellies and brains are physically and biochemically connected in a number of ways, meaning the state of our intestines can alter the way our brains work and behave, giving a whole new meaning to 'Food for thought'. As a nutritionist, microbiologist and neuroscientist, Ruairi Robertson is passionate about the link between our bellies and brains. His research is examining how our intestines and the microbes within them can influence both physical and mental health, and most importantly how our diets influence this relationship. Nutrition is Mental Illness!! Orthorexia Better Body Nutrition Austin The latest invented mental illness by psychiatry is an obsession with eating healthy foods, whole foods or organic foods. Is this really a psychological disorder or just a scam to keep people eating fast foods and unhealthy foods? How is this tied into the Big Food industry and Big Pharma? How does this relate to conventional health care and medications? Do people that eat healthy foods really need to be on antidepressants? The human body - with millions of processes and systems interacting inside of us we are perhaps the most complex living organism on the planet . Much like a circuit board, our bodies are communication system that contains trillions of cells that need to interact with one another to obtain optimal health. Regularly consuming the right combination of vitamins and minerals plays a big role in ensuring overall wellness. Dr. Julia Rucklidge: “There's data now that’s showing that what we eat influences our mental health and these are studies that not only look at the association, correlationally looking at what I'm eating right now and whether or not I have a mental illness, but also prospectively—that is, what I ate six years ago can influence my mental health now.” Dr. Bonnie Kaplan: “Every minute of every day about a liter, or a quart, of blood washes through your brain. What’s that blood doing? It's bringing oxygen and nutrients. So ask yourself what's in your brain’s bathwater? Is it nutrient rich? Then probably your brain is doing pretty well, but for a lot of people what they've eaten in the last 24 hours or so it's not that good, and that bathwater is sub-optimal.” Studies show that a large portion of the US population is not meeting 100% of the recommended dietary allowance for multiple essential nutrients. Furthermore, lack of nutrients may lead to deficiency disorders and prevent optimal health. David L. Hardy: “Even a single deficiency in the body can't be serious. It's like a break in a circuit board. You can shut down an entire metabolic pathway and limit how well the body can function. Therefore the body can only function to the level of the first limiting nutrient.” Dr. Julia Rucklidge: “And so another viable way forward is to supplement and that's the type of work that I've been doing and we are finding robust effects time after time in every single study that we've conducted at the University of Canterbury to date.” As more Americans begin to realize the importance of nutrients the use of supplements has increased over the past 20 years. Unfortunately, what many users of supplements don't know is that not all supplements are created equal. David L. Hardy: “The problem with the research that has been done on some nutritional supplements is that that they've used rather poor supplements. These are supplements that may not be very complete, that may not have the correct balance of essential elements that's necessary for them to operate correctly in the body. They may not be processed properly, they may not be made into small particles that the body can use, and particularly they may not have the minerals in a format that the body can readily use them. Science has shown, for instance, that plant forms of minerals are over a hundred times more soluble than the rock form. The body doesn't do well with the rock form of the element.” NutraTek Health Innovations is leading the way in cutting edge supplement technology. Our focus is to address the urgent need to dramatically reduce healthcare costs for individuals, employers, wellness providers, insurance companies, and governments via technology enhanced essential nutrient supplementation. David L. Hardy: “Because our company was developed to meet the serious health needs of several family members we've paid close attention to how the supplement actually works and we’ve taken nearly two decades of intensive research† and experience to measure results so that our product will deliver results and people can count on it to do that.” Dr. Julia Rucklidge: “The evidence now is pretty remarkable in terms of using vitamins and minerals for the treatment of mental illness, and while we've been collecting data to look at it specifically for the treatment of ADHD for which we found a robust effect compared to placebo in adults with ADHD, there are also other studies that have been done both in my lab and also internationally that have shown the effect of micronutrients for the treatment of stress, post-traumatic stress disorder, autism,…across the whole range of disorders like depression, anxiety and stress.” For more information about NutraTek’s products, please visit www.GetHardy.com. †Includes research on pre-2013 versions of Truehope EMPowerplus which were co-formulated by David Hardy before he founded Hardy Nutritionals. This video is about mental illness and how you might be able to help your loved one get back some of the life they have lost. Someone out there has a "Sheila" who suffers with mental illness, a person like my Sheila. You have done everything the doctors told you to do, to help your loved one, but no one ever told you how nutrition could be the answer. No one told you that simple good nutrition can heal even system wide full body health problems, like mental illness. Food is the best medicine. Proper nutrition is a critical aspect of normal brain development and function, and without it a broad range of disorders of the central nervous system can occur. Disorders like depression and schizophrenia are linked to chemical imbalances that are observed when vitamin deficiencies are present. Therefore, part of mental disorder prevention involves an adequate supply of certain vitamins. Professional medical advice should be sought before trying to prevent, treat or cure any mental disorder. Those who suffer from mental illness such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, etc. may not think a physical problem could be part of the cause. Fact is, people who have vitamin deficiencies often experience mental health problems and/or are diagnosed with a mental illness. Learn about vitamin deficiencies that cause symptoms of mental illness and what you can do to help yourself or a loved one heal. Vitamin Deficiencies can cause a host of troubling mental symptoms such as: Seasonal Affective Disorder Depression Confusion Hallucinations Irritability Psychosis Mood Disorders ADHD Behavioral Problems in Children Severe Anxiety Insomnia Sensitivity to Light and Sound twitching trembling muscle cramping muscle weakness allergies Moodiness Mania Hallucinations Psychosis Paranoia Insomnia Learning Difficulties pernicious anemia Sources: http://hubpages.com/hub/Some-Important-Facts-About-Vitamin-C http://www.livestrong.com/article/348098-vitamins-for-schizophrenia/ http://www.internalmedicinenews.com/news/adolescent-medicine/single-article/vitamin-d-deficiency-linked-to-psychotic-symptoms-in-adolescents/e1f685b050.html http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=omega-3-deficiency-depression http://worldphysique.com/blog/?p=486 http://www.ctds.info/5_13_magnesium.html http://www.bukisa.com/articles/439468_could-your-mental-illness-actually-be-physical http://www.livestrong.com/article/311627-vitamin-deficiencies-mental-disorders/#ixzz2NE10jEVH TFK PERSONAL SITE : www.ADHDecide.org
