It most commonly occurs during reviews with stakeholders or customers. During the review, the stakeholder or customer requests a change to a project goal or deliverable that will require additional unplanned work. Scope creep occurs when the goal or deliverable is changed without adjusting the project schedule or resources. Scope creep can also occur when project team members add unnecessary work to the project. Often the team members do this because they believe it will make the project results better. However, if the stakeholders have not agreed to the change and provided additional time and resources, the effect is to cause scope creep. Scope creep inevitably leads to delays and overruns since the extra work requires time and money to complete. Often scope creep is not recognized until the delay or overrun has already occurred. At that point, it is too late to prevent the scope creep. The project must either be “de-scoped” to fit within the original boundaries or the delay and overrun absorbed by the project sponsors. ---- **Managing Scope Creep Steps** Managing scope creep starts at the time of project initiation. A clear set of project boundaries will reduce the likelihood of project scope creep. The Project Leader should guard against scope creep initiated by team members at the pulse meetings. If a task completion is delayed, the Project Leader should immediately check for the possibility of scope creep. If that is occurring, the Project Leader and Core Team member should redirect the task leader to stay within the task scope. Following every meeting with stakeholders, the project team should review the action items and direction to determine if there is scope creep. If there is an unfunded request for additional scope, the Project Leader should notify the stakeholders and request a clarification on project boundaries. Either an increase in time and resources or the removal of the scope direction. Scope requests that are not approved by the stakeholders should be recorded on a list known as the “Scope Creep Parking Lot.” If the project is re-baselined, this list should be reviewed and appropriate tasks added to the project. At the end of the project, this list is turned over to the project sponsors for review by future projects. **Hints and Tips** Scope creep is a never ending battle on projects. Expect it will happen, so watch closely for the signs and manage it. It is very hard to tell your managers, “No,” when they ask for additional, unfunded scope on the project. Report the request with the impact at the next management review and ask for clarification on boundaries. This talk guides postgraduate students and those thinking of doing a PhD through the vicissitudes of the doctoral process. In a friendly and down-to-earth way, the speaker illustrates issues that many doctoral students face. The talk covers seven challenges that may emerge during a PhD: I’m stuck!, There’s more!, I have no motivation!, I forgot what I did!, I am not sure this is relevant!, I feel lonely! and I don’t know what is next! For each one of these challenges, the speaker provides recommendations on how to tackle them, which draw both on empirical studies and anecdotal evidence. The suggestions go from having “thinking time” to let ideas mature to keeping a research diary, from sticking to a few research questions to saving multiple copies of the thesis manuscript files. The talk recognises that doing a PhD could be more difficult than one may initially expect but that there are ways to overcome the obstacles and enjoy the learning process. Dr. Laura Valadez-Martinez is a Research Associate at the Center for Research in Social Policy of Loughborough University, specialising in income adequacy, poverty measurement, and childhood poverty and well-being. Born and raised in Mexico, she became aware of social inequalities from a young age, and volunteered in various non-governmental organisations. Volunteering activities helped Laura realise that social development requires coherent combined action between the government, civil society, and the private sector. This led her to pursue higher education in the areas of public administration and social policy, under the premise that a sound understanding of social problems is crucial to promote well-being. Consequently, Laura studied the Masters in Public Policy at Monterrey Tech in Mexico. She also holds an MSc in Public Policy in Latin America and the PhD in Social Policy from Oxford University. Venn Constructions specialise in unique commercial projects and architecturally designed residential builds. We caught up with Hendrik and Luke to take a look at their recently completed renovation and extension of Dromana’s Crittenden Estate’s wine tasting building and restaurant entrance. For Venn Constructions, developing partners that collaborate and work together seamlessly is the key to their success. “Construction is easy for us if everybody else joins us to make the project successful. We can then deliver a successful project,” says Hendrik. Bowens account manager Wayne Beagley from the Hastings store says that Bowens played a vital role in sourcing the best products for Venn Constructions. This helps them achieve their goal of a high standard of construction. “Their customers want the best, we deliver the best, so Venn can deliver the best”, says Wayne. The Crittenden Estate project was very time sensitive, which meant that materials needed to be sourced and delivered both quickly and on time. It was vital for Bowens to fulfil their “on time and in full” promise so as not to hold up the project. Luke says, “Communication was key. We needed to get the correct quantity of material, the right specifications and we needed it on time. We didn’t need it next week, we needed at that time, that day.” There was little room for error and the constant and clear communication between Venn Constructions and Bowens meant that the project progressed smoothly. Advanced planning helped Venn Constructions stay ahead and keep their timelines on track. This was especially the case when it came to certain products that they knew would take time to source. For example, Luke gave Wayne plenty of notice to organise the custom designed, extra wide doors that were used throughout the development. An added factor that needed to be taken into consideration on this project was that the winery and restaurant was still operating whist construction was underway. Clayton Hiskins, the Direct Sales Manager for Crittenden Estate, says that communication was critical so that they knew when things were happening and could make arrangements to minimize the impact on trade. It was also important to solve problems quickly as and when they arose and to keep everything on track to meet the deadline for completion. Clayton says, “They don’t keep you hanging in the lurch. Especially when you have got things that need to be answered. They are not hiding behind a wall hoping the problem will go away, they are on the front step getting the problem solved.” This proactive approach is important and one that Venn Constructions applies to all their projects along with very detailed project management. Bowens supplied some unique products such as custom doors, Cypress pine and timber flooring to help Venn Constructions create the vision that the winery owners had in mind. Luke says that it was great asset to have Bowens on board to source products and get them to site in good time. “What can take us 15 minutes to source and know who to ring can take Venn Constructions hours trawling the net,” says Wayne. The collaboration process works hand in hand and as Luke says “allows us to get on with our business.” Bowens account managers are very active on site and help builders on a wide range of projects. They do so much more than just looking at a set of plans and quoting. As Wayne says “We are seeing what you guys go through so we can live it the way you live it.” How Bowens worked with Venn Constructions on the Crittenden Estate project is a good example of how Bowens is a valuable building partner and an integral part of a successful building business.

Open Source Software (OSS): buzzword or badge? Or does it have material benefits to scholarly communications? In other words, can it live up to the hype as a catalyst for innovation? With OSS, anybody can view, use, modify, and distribute a project for any purpose. It supports collaboration - projects can accept code contributions from anybody in the world. It provides transparency - anyone can inspect an open source project for errors or inconsistencies. It also encourages adoption and remixing - code is extended or built off of in any manner of ways. It is a framework for instilling trust amongst the community who use and rely on it. In scholarly communications, there are plenty of open source projects that died on the vine, just as in the larger world. There are no guarantees that applying an Open Source Software model will lead to a successful project. However, counter-examples are difficult to identify and as important to our ongoing conversations about how to create a robust and healthy scholarly ecosystem. We present three successful examples of OSS projects that spawned successful derivative projects — high-impact efforts with far larger communities served: PLOS built Lagotto to track events around scholarly content collect and generate article-level metrics. It achieved scale once Crossref and DataCite built off of the source code to create the Event Data system, now tracking all publications - literature and data - with a DOI. California Digital Library (CDL) built DMPTool to help researchers create data management plans that meet institutional and funder requirements. Separately, Data Curation Centre developed its own, DMPonline. The two found common ground and built a single codebase, Roadmap, which is now managed by both organizations, and is supported by developers worldwide. Dryad Digital Repository’s underlying technology for their data repository was DSpaced-based (DryadRepo). To scale up and serve a larger population of researchers as well as support more modern and efficient data deposition and data curation, they are partnering with CDL, building from CDL’s OSS project, Dash, to power their service. The combined forces have resulted in a new OSS project, DataDryad. An autonomous system providing life support for the brain and allowing it interaction with the environment is created. The brain is transplanted into an Avatar B. In recent years, the practice of political campaigning has transformed to meet the expectations and imperatives of a rapidly changing news media. Events are timed for optimal media exposure, and the tone and tactics of political candidates – from the provocative soundbite to the Friday "dump" of bad news (given that news consumption dips on Saturdays) – are increasingly dictated by the incentives and affordances of the modern media environment. This is something communication scholars call the "mediatization" of politics. In his recent book, The Best "Worst President": What the Right Gets Wrong About Barack Obama, Democratic presidential campaign veteran Mark Hannah documents and debunks a number of myths and misperceptions propagated by President Obama's detractors in this media environment. Hannah will discuss his new book, as well as the ways in which the 2016 candidates are adapting to a changing political news cycle, with longtime political and public affairs consultant David Vermillion. About the Speakers: Mark Hannah has been a staffer on the both Kerry and Obama presidential campaigns. He has written about politics for the PBS MediaShift blog, TIME.com, and for The Huffington Post. Hannah is a political commentator on cable news, regularly appearing on Fox News, MSNBC, and CNBC. An adjunct faculty member at New York University, The New School, and Queens College, he is a doctoral fellow at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication. He holds a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and an M.S. in strategic communications from Columbia University. The future of artificial intelligence is up for debate, and the Origins Project is bringing together a distinguished panel of experts, intellectuals and public figures to discuss who’s in control. Eric Horvitz, Jaan Tallinn, Kathleen Fisher and Subbarao Kambhampati join Origins Project director Lawrence Krauss. Recorded Saturday, February 25th, 2017 Eric Horvitz is managing director of Microsoft Research’s main Redmond Lab, an American computer scientist, and technical fellow at Microsoft. Horvitz received his PhD and MD degrees at Stanford University, and has continued his research and work in areas that span theoretical and practical challenges of machine learning and inference, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, and more. He is a fellow of numerous associations and academies, has received numerous awards, given both technical lectures and presentations for diverse audiences, and been featured in the New York Times and Technology Review. Jaan Tallinn is co-founder of Skype, Estonian programmer, investor and physicist. He is partner and co-founder of the development company Bluemoon, Board of Sponsors member of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, and one of the founders of the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk and the Future of Life Institute. He strongly promotes the study of existential risk and artificial intelligence, and the long-term planning and mitigation of potential challenges. Kathleen Fisher is a professor in and the chair of the Computer Science Department at Tufts University. Previously, she was a program manager at DARPA where she started and managed the HACMS and PPAML programs, a consulting faculty member in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University, and a principal member of the Technical Staff at AT&T Labs Research. Kathleen's research focuses on advancing the theory and practice of programming languages and on applying ideas from the programming language community to the problem of ad hoc data management. Subbarao Kambhampati is a professor of Computer Science at ASU, and is the current president of the Association for the Advancement of AI (AAAI). His research focuses on automated planning and decision making, especially in the context of human-aware AI systems. He is an award-winning teacher and spends significant time pondering the public perceptions and societal impacts of AI. He was an NSF young investigator, and is a fellow of AAAI. He received his bachelor’s degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and his PhD from University of Maryland, College Park. Lawrence Krauss is an author, professor, physicist, public intellectual and Director of the Origins Project at Arizona State University, where he is also Foundation Professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration and the Department of Physics.
