Preeclampsia is a condition of pregnancy caused by something that occurs during pregnancy that causes a woman's blood pressure to go up. For most people a normal blood pressure is about 120 over 80. If your blood pressure starts to slowly creep up and it's 140 over 90 or greater, then the doctor is probably going to start monitoring you. You can expect them to draw your blood and test your urine and watch your baby and also ask you a lot about certain symptoms you might be feeling like headaches, dizziness, blurry vision, and a sudden increase in swelling. If you're at home and ever have this persistent headache that you just can't kick it's always a good idea to go get your blood pressure checked. In your specific case you mentioned that your blood pressure was 144 over 72, the doctor tested your urine and it sounds like there's not any protein there. You want to know what you can do to lower your blood pressure. There really is nothing you can do to reverse the process once it's started but you can do something to try to slow it down. If the doctor has told you to be on bed rest or modified best rest then follow their advice because when we are at rest our blood pressure is lower. Your blood pressure at rest may slowly start to creep up because if your body is developing preeclampsia this will naturally happen. Because the cause is pregnancy the cure is delivery. It never starts to reverse itself until you've actually delivered the baby. This becomes very complicated if you're preterm. You did mention that you're 25 weeks and obviously we don't want to deliver you at this point unless it's necessary. You're the best incubator for your baby and there are no other incubators out there that are better. But sometimes if you develop preeclampsia then it becomes necessary to deliver the baby for their wellbeing and for yours. Ultimately complications of this can be as severe as a stroke and seizures for you. These things can also compromise the baby and there can be compromised blood flow to the baby because the high blood pressure also affects your blood's ability to flow through the placenta. They'll watch you very closely. They'll monitor your blood, your urine, your baby, combine all of these pieces of the puzzle together and it might come to the point where you have to deliver early for the wellbeing of you and your baby. Hopefully that's not the case. Hopefully you can carry your baby to full term. If you're developing it this early then I would keep in close contact with your doctor and make sure if you start to have suspicious symptoms that you get your blood pressure checked right away. Again, the only thing you can do is be at rest most of the time. Do this under the direction of your doctor and ask your doctor if they feel like it's necessary in your case. I have low blood pressure even when I get up in the morning. It is normal to be fatigued when pregnant, so do not mistake that for low blood pressure. The doctor says I have low blood pressure. When you’re pregnant, your circulatory system is expanding. The result can be lower blood pressure even as your heart works harder to circulate all the volume, since you have to nurture two. I have to pee for two, as well. Really bad morning sickness to the point of severe dehydration can make your blood pressure drop. It seems like everything makes me need to throw up. Talk to your doctor. If you are dehydrated to the point of low blood pressure, you may need fluids to get rehydrated. I’ve already talked to the doctor, and all I hear at this point is to use pressure bands on my wrists and ginger. And that tastes worse coming up than it does going down. What can I do about it? Causes of high blood pressure in pregnancy This video is about high blood pressure that occurs during pregnancy. The medical expression for high blood pressure is hypertension. Hypertension in pregnancy Three types of high blood pressure can be developed in a pregnant woman: 1. The first type of high blood pressure is called chronic hypertension, and it may appear even before a woman has become pregnant, although she has not been aware of its existence. 2. Gestational hypertension is a type that appears at the end of pregnancy. Later, after giving birth to a baby, it is no longer present. 3. Pregnancy-induced hypertension is a type of high blood pressure that can cause serious problems for the mother and the baby. This type usually appears after the 20th week of pregnancy, and is also called toxemia and preeclampsia. Problems due to high blood pressure If a mother has chronic hypertension, the baby may grow more slowly than normal, and because of that, the baby may not develop as it is supposed to be. According to medicine, gestational hypertension can not cause serious problems for you and your baby, but you may be more predisposed to high blood pressure later in life. Over time, it is much more serious and has severe signs, such as headaches, blurred vision, abdominal pain and dizziness. It also affects the baby in a way that slows down its growth, causing a premature birth. The treatment of high blood pressure during pregnancy Pregnant women should be very careful during pregnancy and should not take any medication that is not safe for the baby. If you are not sure about the medication, consult your doctor. In a case of chronic hypertension, women can continue taking the medication beforehand, paying attention to whether it is safe for the baby. This weeks video is about high blood pressure and how you can prevent getting it with simple yet effective lifestyle changes. Healthcare professionals refer to high blood pressure as the silent killer and for a good reason! High blood pressure increases risks of many diseases and shortens your life significantly. WHAT IS HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and is given as two figures: Systolic pressure – The pressure when your heart pushes blood out. Diastolic pressure – The pressure when your heart rests between beats. As a general guide: High blood pressure is considered to be 140/90mmHg or higher (or an average of 135/85mmHg at home) Ideal blood pressure is considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg Low blood pressure is considered to be 90/60mmHg or lower. A blood pressure reading between 120/80mmHg and 140/90mmHg could mean you're at risk of developing high blood pressure if you don't take steps to keep your blood pressure under control. HOW TO PREVENT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: High blood pressure can often be prevented or reduced by eating healthily, maintaining a healthy weight, taking regular exercise, drinking alcohol in moderation and not smoking. SALT & DIET: Cut down on the amount of salt in your food and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. The NHS Eatwell Guide highlights the different types of food that make up our diet, and shows the proportions we should eat them in to have a well-balanced and healthy diet. Salt raises your blood pressure. The more salt you eat, the higher your blood pressure. Aim to eat less than 6g (0.2oz) of salt a day, which is about a teaspoonful. Eating a low-fat diet that includes lots of fibre – such as wholegrain rice, bread and pasta – and plenty of fruit and vegetables also helps lower blood pressure. Aim to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables every day. STOP SMOKING: Smoking doesn't directly cause high blood pressure, but it puts you at much higher risk of a heart attack and stroke. Smoking, like high blood pressure, will cause your arteries to narrow. If you smoke and have high blood pressure, your arteries will narrow much more quickly, and your risk of heart or lung disease in the future is dramatically increased. SLEEP: Long-term sleep deprivation is associated with a rise in blood pressure and an increased risk of hypertension. It's a good idea to try to get at least six hours of sleep a night if you can. It is because there are other complications, the signs and symptoms which we have to look into in pregnancy are sudden increase in weight gain, generalized swelling predisposing to edema. Other predisposing factors which we have to look into is signs and symptoms in pregnancy, an excessive weight gain or edema in the leg, or generalized edema, positive roll over test or Doppler scan of the uterine artery showing a diastolic raunch or a raised pulsatility index. As we say, prevention is better than cure. So we give low dose aspirin between 75 to 150 mg per day till about the 34th or the 36th week of pregnancy. Heparin is also given in severe cases. Low salt or salt restricted diet has to be taken and relative bed rest has to be advised, the need for treatment is because of the complication that arise associated with hypertension with the mother and the baby. With regards to the mother, there can be organ dysfunction relate of the kidney, heart, liver and the coagulation system and abruption placenta is one of the dreaded complications that can happen. With regards to the baby, intrauterine growth restriction and oligohydramnios has been associated. Both of which might require a premature e delivery and hence the complications associated with prematurity also has to be talked. Treatment options are bed rest, prophylactic therapy to be continued. The 4 main drugs used to control hypertension in pregnancy are Labetolol, hydralazine, alpha methyl dopa, and nifedepine. Other drugs are contraindicated in view of complications to the baby, be in terms of intrauteruine growth restriction and oligohydramnios and the prematurity related risks. So in a nut shell hypertension in pregnancy has to be expected prevented and treated at the right times so that the mother and the baby can be sent home safely.
