How to make a rolling tool cart. I am using this as a rolling planer stand. Building a tool cart doesn't have to be hard or complicated if you want something simple and cheap. This really is a cheap tool cart, coming in at around $45 for materials. This makes a great DW735x planer stand. This is a simple DIY tool cart that anyone can build. A great way to add tool storage to your shop is to build a tool storage cart like this. This is an easy tool cart to build. Obviously there are fancier carts than this. However, if you want an inexpensive tool cart, this is the way to go. I used 7/16" OSB as my decking and 2x4's for the structure. You can use plywood if you wanted a cleaner look to your utility cart. Check the links below for the supplies, tool cart plans and tools used in this build. This rolling tool cart is easy to move around the shop and will keep tools stored off the floor. Being able to easily store my planer on this cart will be so convienent. This planer cart will hold the 735x planer without any issues. If you want to build a DW735X planer cart like this, let me know in the comments below. You can use this as a drill press cart, band saw cart, or any number of tools. Affiliate links below. Demonstration of my planer stand and how well the chip collection works. Note that this method of dust collection will only work with this particular planer, since it has a built in blower. Read more about it here: https://ibuildit.ca/projects/mobile-planer-stand-with-chip-collection/ I'm in no way being compensated by DeWalt for this. I bought this planer nearly a year ago, based on several factors, not the least of which it was on sale. With that said, I don't know of any other planer that has a built in blower that could be used in this way, so that was another big selling point.

This video shows how I made a new, long, dead-flat bed for my portable planer to help minimize snipe. The new bed helps in two ways: 1) it removes the flex/uneveness in the existing planer bed, and 2) it helps hold the board level as it enters/leaves the planer. The bed is covered with a 1/4 inch layer of UHMW (ultra high molecular weight) plastic to provide a very slick and durable surface (https://www.curbellplastics.com). The longer bed replaces the very short factory out-feed tables and has greatly minimized the amount of snipe I previously encountered. For longer boards, I can also attach auxiliary out-feed tables to provide further support. The construction of my universal out-feed tables was previously shown in this video: https://youtu.be/Doa3Bnus5r8

This is a simple, yet effective, fixture that you can make in an afternoon to eliminate your sniping problem from your planed surfaces. Made from 1/2 plywood with some screws and nails. A simple way to make your affordable planer work like the wallet busters! Thanks and Enjoy!

Adding my thickness planer to my ultimate woodworking workstation build was one of the more challenging installations. I wanted to install it so that I could fold it away when it is obstructing the use of the table saw but I didn't want it to leave an opening in the bench top when it is packed away like in the case of the Miter saw. I also wanted to sink the planer so that the rest of the bench can handle/support the in-feed and out-feed of the stock. I decided to install the planer on a 180° flip top rotating table with cabinet storage so that when the planer is stored, the underside of the rotating bed would complete/fill the area on the bench top. Well the weather is warming up and it's about time to get the shop organized and ready to do some work. My DeWalt planer lives under the workbench, and I have to lug it out every time I want to use it. It seems to get heavier every time I do this! It was time for a new cart! I wanted to put the cart on wheels so I can easily move it around to put it out of the way when not in use. Come to think about it, I'd like to see a lot of things on wheels to roll around out of the way when not in use.....I think I'll do that. A tour of my fliptop planer stand, during which I tear it down and add a storage drawer in the base. ⇊ Click "show more" for more details! ⇊ The DeWALT dw735 is a very large planer. Most planers are more rectangular shaped. The dewalt is shorter and more squat, but also much more square in shape. This means that I needed a much larger stand than I would for another planer. If you can't spare that kind of shop space, maybe you should consider building a fliptop workstation. This will allow you to store (and USE!) two tools in the same space as one. Even better, one sheet of plywood will provide almost all the materials you need to build this project. In this video I start with an idea to build a thickness planer stand that is slightly higher than my mobile workbench. The plan is in the future when I can afford some heavy duty castors to make this planer stand mobile also. I use my table saw to make 'lap joints' for the legs and cross members. It was while making this video I found that the slab in my workshop is not level, I also found while lining the walls of my workshop that the uprights are also not square also. Anyway I use my jointer and thickness planer to square up rough timber to use for this project. I hope some beginner woodworkers like my self find it interesting and learn a few tips for yourselves. Cheers Matthew.

I don't have a dust collection system in my shop, yet. I was amazed at how much fine dust my thicknesser/planer threw into the air, making it a real pain to work with. Any time I wanted to flatten a board I would have to prepare for a barrage of dust which not only affected my health, but would also coat the shop. This mobile cart doubles as a dust collector and the results were quite impressive. It uses the planer to push the chips and dust into a box, where furnace filter fabric traps the fine particles. Watch more Learn Woodworking videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/500398-How-to-Use-a-Surface-Planer-Woodworking Learn how to use a surface planer in this Howcast woodworking video featuring Makeville Studio. Surface planer is one of several tools that you'll need in a shop if you're going to mill and square up rough lumber, but it also has a separate function which is just to reduce the thickness of boards so you can use it as a thickness planer and also as a surfacer. If you use it as a thickness planer it is pretty simple to operate. The basic way this is setup is there is a set of blades in the middle of this housing and there is a couple rollers and so you pass the board in and it gets grabbed by the roller, goes under the blades, comes out on the other roller and the blades are skimming off material as its passing through. It can skim off up to an 16th or even an 8th of an inch, that's pretty aggressive at one pass. Normally what you're doing is passing a board through multiple times to skim off the little bits of material until you get down to the thickness that you want. The way it works is there is a crank on the side which raises and lowers this entire housing, that's essentially changing where the blade height is. You need to setup that up first when you're working with a board. You have to know how thick a board you have. You can measure it and set the height on this gauge here or you can measure it by feel which is what I do. I actually put it in the machine and start lowering it and I'll feel when it starts to hit the rollers and other mechanisms underneath the housing. When I hit the roller I will back off a little bit and then I know that I'm probably at the surface of the wood at this point. From there I will go a half turn and I know I will be taking off probably about a 16th of an inch. Now, there's a couple of options for setting controls on here. You can go between two types of finishes. One is called finishing cut and one is called dimensioning. Essentially, switching between these two positions usually speeds up or slows down the rollers so either you're getting more cuts per inch or fewer cuts per inch depending on the setting. More cuts per inch make a finer finish so you can use that for a finish cut. Another control that is pretty useful on this machine is a depth stop. You can use this to set a depth you don't want to go beyond. Lets say I have this board, its one and a quarter inches, I only want to go down to an inch. It is very easy to go past an inch sometimes if you're not being careful with this wheel, what this does is it prevents this wheel from turning once it gets down to one inch, you can't even turn the wheel anymore. That's useful, if you're not using that just put it down to some low dimension that you'll never get to and you'll never be stopped. Now one thing that is really important on surface planers is dust collection. These machines make a huge amount of dust and this machine particularly ejects that dust at a high velocity. So that machine next to us, the dust collector, has to be on when this is on otherwise you get a big mess of dust in the shop. That's it for the setup of this machine. I'm going to run this board through to see how it works. One thing you'll want to do when you're running a board through the planer is draw some lines on it just so you can your progress. Sometimes the top surface of the board may have some hills or valleys maybe cupped. One of the things you need to be aware of with this machine is that it only works if you have one flat face already. What happens is it references off the bottom face which is on this bed down here and it takes whatever it reads down there and does it to the top face. So if you have a bow or twist in your board as this is passing through the planer it is going to get pushed down by the roller and it's just going to accentuate the shape of whatever board you have. It's not a magic box. It just doesn't make a flat piece of wood out of a twisted one. You need to actually have one flat faced before bringing your wood over here. Once you do then you're ready to go. This machine is extremely loud and you will want to wear ear protection when using it. Okay, that's our finished product and I wanted to run this through to show you one other thing about the planer which is something that happens a lot. It's called snipe. I don't know if you can see this but there is a slight difference in height where the planer blades have chunked out a little bit extra on these last couple of inches of the wood. What happens is when passing the wood through there, the roller grabs it and actually pulls it up into the blade. So at the beginning and at the end of the cuts, the roller does that, it pulls it up into the blade. Y

I decided to replace my old workbench with a fancy new one. The new design has dual flipping stations built in for stationary tools like my planer. This way, I have a big flat workbench most of the time, and access to some heavier tools within seconds when I need them. I bought this power planer for under 50 bucks new and decided to take some scrap MDF and make myself a jointer. It has a fully adjustable infeed table to match the depth of cut of the planer, an on off switch, the ability to use dust collection and you can easily remove it to use as it was intended. I finished it off with some yellow Tremclad paint. Free plans avaliable at my website in the link below. Heavy duty infeed/outfeed table extensions intended to be moved between multiple tools like a radial arm saw, table saw, miter saw, and planer. The extension tables are inspired by the "Mr. Sawdust" design as described in Wally Kunklel's book, "How to Master the Radial Arm Saw".
