Learn more: http://bit.ly/1slqdd1 One of the most important lessons almost all portrait photographers learn is that shadows help to give the viewer a sense of depth and shape. This is true but only when the primary subject is of a brightness or tonality that easily allows for contrast between light and dark areas. For example, when photographing something or someone light in tonality, shadows are the contrast control tool you would want to use. However, when photographing something or someone of a dark tonality, it is the highlight details that help to illustrate the point of depth, shape, form and texture.

To learn how to take amazing portraits of your family, go here: http://bit.ly/1rnLZWQ Outdoor Portrait Background Ideas and Poses - You'll find many opportunities for shooting portraits in the great outdoors. When you're looking for a background location you want to keep it simple. Look out for a uniform background, such as trees, which also adds a dash of color and contrast. Look at light vs shadow. Some diffused light from trees is great, just be sure that you don't have dappled sunlight on your subject's face. Try to pick a place where you and your subject can move around and try different angles. How much background and the space between the background and your subject influences the look and feel of your portrait. Your own backyard or front porch can make a great background, as can your local park or the beach. Remember that time of day is also important. Try to avoid shooting in the harsh midday sun and strive for early morning or late afternoon, the so-called Golden Hours when the sun is more diffused and softer. More tips: * Get close to your subject and crop out distractions. * Go off center and include some of the background when you have a great natural setting like a river or lake. * Look down and up to avoid things like power lines or street signs or garbage cans that can distract. * Move in close to your subject, position them 10-15 feet from their background and use a wide aperture to get that lovely background blur called bokeh. You can go as wide as f1.8 or f2 if you have a single subject and it will make the trees, wall, ground or whatever other background you have nicely blurred out. Today on the Slanted Lens we’re back out at the SKB Factory shooting an industrial portrait. It’s one of the assignments that can go really easy or really hard. So let’s get started and see what we can do. When I say industrial portrait, it’s not a lifestyle portrait. It’s not a documentary style portrait. It’s an industrial portrait. Which is more commercial than it is portrait. It’s about making the factory and the people look good. It’s more the kind of portrait you would see in an annual report or on a company’s website. Something they would use to represent the company. With that in mind, I want the people and the place to look very inviting. So let’s take a look at some tips on how to make that happen. _________________________________________________ Subscribe to The Slanted Lens and get new videos every Thursday http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=TheSlantedLens Visit the webpage: http://theslantedlens.com SCHEDULE *New lessons and tutorials on the first and third Thursday of each month *Trends from the Trenches on the second Thursday (http://bit.ly/1MEEVFB) *Product Reviews on the fourth Thursday Follow Jay P Morgan Google Plus: http://bit.ly/1PAIIlC https://www.facebook.com/theslantedlens1 https://twitter.com/theslantedlens

In this video I demonstrate 3 DIY photography tips that you can use to create depth in your studio portraits and modeling shots. Using simple things like water and hair spray I will show you how you can use these do it yourself techniques with a speed light, a pocket flash or a studio strobe to create dramatic studio portraits. Solid colored paper backgrounds are great when shooting studio portraits and modeling shots because they let you isolate your subject and since they come in different colors they are very versatile - if you have enough money to buy every color. I already showed you that gray is the most versatile color for portrait photography because you can turn it into any color with gels on your flash or strobe like the Interfit Honey Badger. But even with all the possible combinations of colored backgrounds and gels - sometimes you are going to want more from your studio lighting. A little something to jazz up that seamless paper background and create some depth. New photographers are taught that especially with a dark background - you should separate your portrait subject from the background visually with a rim light or a hair light - so that you don’t wind up with a floating head. This too is a great technique - but it is just one more tool that you have to jazz up your backgrounds and indeed - sometimes you want something a little more. Another DIY studio lighting trick is to actually place an object or some kind of material between your subject and the background to create the feeling of depth. While this works - you do need to be careful that you aren’t making your shot too busy - and stealing attention from your subject. One of my favorite tricks is to use WATER and a black seamless paper background. Get a spray bottle like this one that you can order on Amazon or find at a hardware store or even some times at a dollar store. The bigger the better because you do want the spray to travel. Watch more How to Take Portraits videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/514374-How-to-Pose-People-for-Outdoor-Portrait-Portrait-Photography I'm Joe. I teach at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. These are a few tips for posing outdoor portraits. I usually try to keep people in the shade. Nice soft, even, diffuse light is much more flattering than direct sunlight. I usually try to have people standing as much as I can. Bring a ladder or stool or something to stand on so that you can get above their eye line. Standing is better because you have a great range of movement that you can ask people to do. People that are sitting are restricted by the limits of whatever they're sitting on and where you're going to sit them outdoors. You got to worry about the weather, is the ground dry, is it wet. If you sit them on a piece of masonry, is it covered with pigeon stuff or something like that. If they're standing you don't have to worry about any of that and you can ask them to do more different things as far as leaning and turning than you can when they're sitting. I usually try to get people on a little bit of an angle too so that you're shooting across their shoulders. Roll your left shoulder back just a little bit. That's fabulous. A reflector, to bring in a little light, make them pop out a little bit from the background. That's terrific. Lift your chin tiny bit. Turn your head a little bit to your right. That's fabulous. From your waist lean towards me a bit. That's great. Lift your chin tiny bit, turn your head slightly right. That's nice. Sweep the hair back just a tad. Roll your left shoulder back just a little bit. Turn your head a little more to your right and tilt your head a little bit to the right. It's much easier to go through all of that when they're standing. Take a few steps this way. The same location outdoors can work for a long time just by having them make very, very small amounts of movement through your location. Come this way just a little bit. Very nice. From your waist turn to your left. Bring in the reflector a little bit and fall off the ladder. Too much, come back just a little. That's terrific. Turn and face straight towards me. We'll try that. Spread your feet a bit. Pop the hip to the left. Very hard to pop the hip to the left when you're sitting down. Roll your right shoulder back this time. From your waist turn more to your right. That's great. Lean towards me a bit. Tilt your head a bit to your right. It's not a bad thing to bring a couple of props into the shoot if you have something that looks nice and makes sense from where you are. Bring your feet out just a little bit. Can you get a good lean going on that? Nice. Turn your head a little bit to your right. Very nice. Spread your feet a bit. Pop the hip to your right. Very fabulous. Turn your head a little bit to your right. A little more. Tilt your head a bit to your right. Those are a few tips for posing outdoor portraits.

Here is a link to the flashes I use: https://goo.gl/yMj1GS Have you ever been shooting a wedding where things were running behind or the weather was just gross?? If you have been lucky enough to avoid the above scenarios, there will come a day where you get next to no quality time for portraits and have to get creative. First, let me make it clear that we never rely on shooting just night portraits as our plan A. Our brand and our brides expect bright and beautiful sunset portraits but sometimes that can just not happen. When that is the case, we don't freak out, because we know we can always do some pictures at night during the reception. Many times, brides even request night portraits or I just want to do some for fun. For a wedding photographer, shooting at night is an important skill to have. Here is how you can get started! We use Yongnuo flashes, they are inexpensive and easy to use. They use radio waves to trigger so they don't have to be within line of sight like optical flashes. Also, we ALWAYS shoot on manual, it is just easier to figure everything out that way. I never want to pull the bride and groom out from their wedding for a long time, so while Sarah is taking care of the reception, I go outside and scout my location and get set up. Once I find the spot I want, I set my camera for the ambient light (the light that I do not produce with my flashes) After I get the ambient light correct, I place my two bare flashes on light stands in about the right place and I go inside to find a cute couple :) I have the couple stand there and I turn on channel A (the rear flash) I adjust the back light to a level I like and then I turn on channel B and get my main light looking good. Once I get the main flash where I want it, I take a few seconds to take some good photos of my models and then I head inside to grab the bride and groom. When they come outside, everything is all set and it literally takes less than 2 minutes to get "the shot" and then they can go back in and party :) Once you understand how to use flash, night portraits can be a great tool to add to your wedding day arsenal. If you are not confidant with your flashes, I offer one on one photo lessons and mentoring where I can teach you all about on and off camera flash. Watch more How to Take Portraits videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/514373-Picking-a-Location-for-an-Outdoor-Photo-Portrait-Photography I'm Joe. I teach photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York. These are a few outdoor location ideas. Almost anything works as an outdoor location if you let the background go out of focus. Use an F-stop of 5, 6-ish or so, so that you have enough depth of field for your subject to be in focus and your background goes completely out. It doesn't hurt if your background is much brighter than your foreground. Keep your subject in the shade so there's nice, soft, even, diffused lighting on them. Use a reflector to brighten them up a little bit in the shade. But so long as your background is out of focus and indistinct, there are very few things that really don't work. Be careful when you're setting up your subject. Sidney, from your waist turn a little bit to your left. Be conscious of anything vertical in your background so its not coming right out of their heads, even something that's a little bit out of focus or indistinct that's coming right out of somebody's head is going to be a little bit distracting. If you can't find a situation where your background is far enough away for you to put it out of focus, then try to use something simple and uniform and regular like a brick wall. Or even just get very, very high up on the ladder and looking down so that the only background you have is ground and whatever is distracting in the background is out of your frame. Fabulous. Lift your chin a tiny bit. And those are some ideas for outdoor location portraits.

This photography video is a portrait photography tutorial, where we show you just one of the many ways you can shoot a panoramic portrait also known as the Impossible Portrait. This particular style of shooting a portrait is known as the ‘Brenizer Method’ pioneered by wedding photographer Ryan Brenizer. If you’re new to panoramas or panoramic photography, you should watch this short photography tutorial on how to shoot panoramas correctly here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrUxv76bX9E The Brenizer Method is an easy to learn but difficult to master photography technique which is also referred to as Bokeh Panorama or Bokehrama. With this creative photography method, you can shoot a ultra wide-angle portrait while retaining the shallow depth of field that is so popular in modern portrait photography and on Instagram.
