The old expression, “failing to plan is planning to fail" also applies to employee development. In my recent article (http://www.optimusperformance.ca/managing-employees-for-change-improved-productivity/) about a leaders' struggle to deal with employees being resistant to change, I wrote that strategic planning for employee development is a practice that a leader must undertake to avoid this dilemma. Developing a human resource or employee development plan is often the responsibility of the human resource department if there is one. From my perspective, it's the leader’s responsibility because the leader is accountable for the performance of the department and each employee. Here is my list of things for the leader or manager to do to develop a strategic plan for employee development..... 'Will' or 'Going to' - Talking about Future plans - (English Grammar Lesson) Take the quiz : http://www.learnex.in/future-plans-will-or-going-to-english-grammar-lesson If you need help to talk about future plans then please stay with me because in this English Grammar lesson I am going to teach you how to talk about your future plans. Website : http://www.letstalkpodcast.com Facebook : http://www.facebook.com/letstalkpodcast #1. Which decision is planned - Will/Going to? Let’s look at a conversation: (Phone rings) Michelle – Hi Harry. Harry – Hi Michelle, would you like to join me for a coffee this evening? Michelle – Yea, I will join you but I must let my mom know. *In this conversation, “will” is used to talk about a rapid decision i.e. a decision made at the moment of speaking. Conversation continues..................... (Phone rings) Mom – Hey Michelle. Michelle – Hi mom. I need to tell u something. Mom – tell me Michelle – I am going to have a coffee with Harry this evening. *In this part of the conversation, “Going to” is used to talk about a decision that was made before the moment of speaking and arrangements have been made for that decision. #2 –Which decision is more certain – will/ going to? We are more certain about the decision where we use “Going to” – Because the decision was pre-planned and arrangements have been more for it already. (to meet Harry, had a conversation, agreed on the phone, told mom)– 100% sure When we are lesser certain about a decision we use “will”– Because the decision is made rapidly in an instant and no arrangements have been made for it. ( not yet told mom, only confirmed to Harry) – 85-90 % sure If you are even lesser sure about your future plans then you can use will with expressions such as: Probably, possibly, I hope, I think- 70 % sure For Example: If you speak to a person for the first time and you realize that you have a lot in common. You can say, “I think we’ll get along well”. (50-70 % sure) I’ll possibly spend these vacations in Hawaii. Probably I’ll see you next summer.

Do you want to make a successful change? Learn how to develop SMART goals. How SMART are your goals? When you are developing goals, whether they are for personal learning or achievement, clients or care plans you need to be sure they are SMART. Writing SMART goals takes some time, but it increases your chances of success because you can clearly see and understand where you are headed. SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant/Realistic and Time-limited. This concept has been used for more than three decades in business, psychology and education literature to promote behavior change. It is an evidence-based approach to promoting practice changes. Each component of SMART goals in promoting performance improvements has been studied and supported by literature. To be specific your goal needs to be clear and detailed enough for everyone to understand it. To be measurable your goal needs to be quantifiable. Make sure you avoid being vague. Ask yourself, How will you measure the results? What changes will you see? To be attainable you need to be able to achieve the goal. It needs to be realistic given your current abilities and resources. To be relevant your goal needs to be linked to your role in the work setting or your personal life if it is a personal goal. Some forms of this acronym replace "relevant" with "realistic." It is also important to consider if each component of your goal is realistic. Placing a time limit on the goal is important because deadlines motivate you and help you evaluate your progress. Again, think about your deadline and make sure it is realistic. Here is an example of a common goal I hear. Is this goal SMART? "To lose weight." Nope -- It's not SMART. How much weight do you want to lose? When do you want to lose it? This goal may be Relevant to the person but it is not Specific, Measurable or Time-limited. You may think it is attainable, but even if you have the needed skills and resources to lose weight it is going to be hard to achieve your goal with it written like this. It is too vague so it will not help to motivate you. How about this goal? "To lose 30 pounds in the next two weeks." Wow! 30 pounds in only two weeks? That is not healthy or realistic according to current standards! I would say that in most situations that is not an attainable goal (unless maybe you are having it cut off). Lets try again. How about "To lose 10 pounds in the next six weeks." I would say it is specific and measurable. To assess if it is attainable think about how you are planning to lose weight. Through healthy eating and exercise this goal would be attainable because it means losing less than 2 pounds per week, which is in line with current recommendations for sustainable weight loss. Weight loss is relevant to an overall healthy lifestyle for many people. The goal is time limited to two weeks, which sets a deadline for evaluation. YAY! It is a SMART goal! Let's look at a some learning goals. Are there any SMART goals? 1. To accurately perform vital signs. 2. To improve hand washing techniques before the next clinical day. 3. To learn and perform all assigned assessments for the semester in one clinical day. 4. To perform a head to toe assessment according to the guidelines in Jarvis (2009) by the end of the clinical placement. They are all relevant to the role of a student nurse in the clinical setting. #1 does not have a time limit. When will you perform vital signs? So it is not SMART. #2 is not measurable. What kind of improvement are you aiming for? So it is not SMART. #3 is not attainable. So it is not SMART. #4 is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-limited. YAY!! Do you see the difference? Finally lets look at some goals for a client who has just had a newborn baby and wants to breastfeed. Which one is SMART enough for the care plan? #1 is not realistic because she will need to wake up in the night to feed the baby. So it is not SMART. Remove it from the care plan! #2 is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-limited. YAY!! #3 is not time-limited. So it is not SMART. Add a realistic time frame and it can stay in the care plan. #4 is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-limited. YAY!! For more information about learning goals for nurses visit the College of Nurses website and use the worksheet in this document to help you formulate a SMART learning goal. These SMART goals are a requirement for nurses. Thank you for watching. Please let me know what you thought of this video. I hope you have SMART goals from now on!

Apple CEO Tim Cook discusses the 25 year plan he developed while a student at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and why you should veer away from such plans. Cook spoke as part of his class reunion at the school.(www.fuqua.duke.edu) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- APPLE CEO AND FUQUA ALUM TIM COOK TALKS LEADERSHIP AT DUKE Tim Cook spoke to students and alums when he returned for his 25th reunion "Explore everything. Push the corners of your mind. Just get on this kind of continual learning roller coaster and see what happens." This was among the advice Apple CEO Tim Cook shared with students at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business on April 26th. Back on campus for his 25-year reunion, Cook took part in an hour-long dialogue with Fuqua Dean Bill Boulding and the students in a jam-packed Geneen Auditorium buzzing with excitement to hear from the leader of the world's most profitable company. The Apple CEO has embarked on a career far different than he had envisioned after graduating from Fuqua's Evening Executive MBA program in 1988. "For me the journey was not predictable at all. You have to find your own north star and stay with your north star." As 450 Daytime MBA students prepared to graduate, Cook advised the students to heed Abraham Lincoln's words of wisdom: "I will prepare and someday my chance will come." Cook shared the three keys to his leadership at Apple: people, strategy, and execution. "If you get those three right the world is a great place." Students were able to get a unique glimpse into Cook's motivation, inspiration and leadership role models. Raised in the south and a witness to racial injustice, Cook described his admiration for Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Junior's bravery in risking their lives to fight for what they believed in. He has just three photos in his office: two of Kennedy and one of King. Cook was asked when to follow strict principles of business theory and when to break the rules. His response stressed the importance of risks and learning from failure. "You should rarely follow the rules. What Fuqua teaches you so well is how to learn and how to collaborate. Write your own rules." This message resonated with first-year MBA student Shelby Hall. "I know this follows Steve Jobs' belief that Apple creates products which consumers didn't ever know existed," she said. "It was interesting to hear Tim Cook's perspective on how we should balance writing our own rules while applying the foundations of business taught here at Fuqua." Cook also spoke about some of his recollections from Fuqua. "The people made it an incredible experience. It was great for me to see how bright people approached solutions in different ways." First-year MBA student Juan Danzilo says Cook's willingness to share his experiences shows a deep commitment to Fuqua. "Tim Cook's presence reflects Fuqua's sense of community. His humility and eloquence is admirable. It certainly was a unique opportunity for MBA students to hear from such an inspirational leader."

This video shows the difference between a defined-benefit pension plan and a defined-contribution plan. The core difference between these two types of plans boils down to what the employer is promising: with a defined-benefit pension plan, the employer is promising the employee a series of annuity payments after the employee retires. With the defined-contribution pension plan (e.g., a 401(k) plan), the employer is promising to make contributions to the employee's retirement account. At Amazon's Kindle Store... http://goo.gl/xobJFo WRITE AN A+ ESSAY: IT'S EASIER THAN YOU MIGHT THINK. I'm going to make a confession. I was a straight-A student in high school. I graduated summa cum laude from college. My senior thesis won the institution’s coveted essay-writing prize. Not thanks to raw brilliance, or dazzling talent. No, I knew how to write essays. You see, great essays aren’t necessarily written by the “best and brightest.” They're written by students who know the rules—from concept to thesis statement, from outline to final draft. Students who know how to get the best possible grade for the least amount of work. I’ll show you how you can, too. A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO CONQUERING YOUR NEXT ESSAY ASSIGNMENT My name is Jenny Sawyer. Over the past five years, I’ve been the girl behind 60second Recap®. I've invested thousands of hours helping teens understand classic literature. I’ve answered countless emails seeking help with essay assignments. I’ve guided individual students, one-on-one, through the process of crafting thesis statements and writing essays, testing and refining the techniques I used when I was in school. Strategies I employed to nail essay after essay. Most people think A+ essays require hours of hard work. Or genius. I’d always had a hunch they’d thought wrong. Now, I'm certain of it: YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A GENIUS TO WRITE AN A+ ESSAY I’ve read mediocre essays from brilliant students. Great essays from ordinary students. What sets those A+ essay-writing students apart? They know how to analyze the assignment to keep themselves on track. I’ll show you how you can, too. YOU DON’T NEED LONG HOURS TO WRITE AN A+ ESSAY The best essays rarely take the most time. In fact, some nearly write themselves. How? With the right kind of preparation: A+ essay-writing students organize their research and cut their workload by as much as half. I’ll show you how you can, too. FORMULAS ARE NEVER THE ANSWER, BUT... A+ essays are never formulaic. But they have a lot in commont. A+ essays start strong with crisp, provocative thesis statements. A+ essays support those thesis statements with well-chosen examples and tightly-reasoned arguments—the hallmarks of persuasive writing. A+ essays finish strong, with conclusions that locked the reader into agreement with the essay’s thesis. A+ essays are written by students working from a simple framework: the five-paragraph essay format. I’ll show you how you can, too. DON’T BE INTIMIDATED: IT’S A HEAD GAME, YOU KNOW Ready to supercharge your essay-writing process? You can when you “think like a prosecutor.” I'll show you how. I’ll also reveal the courtroom “trick” you can use to save yourself time and trouble while you craft a great thesis statement. You'll see how you can use the strategies of a criminal trial to speed you through each step of the essay-writing process, from the organization of your research, to the writing of your thesis statement, to the polish of your final draft. If you're making an architectural portfolio, or yours needs a refresh, this is your how-to guide. We'll review the key differences between paper and digital portfolios, and you'll learn why the best portfolio is the one you're able to keep updated with fresh content. I recommend you craft your portfolio as an integral part of a broader web-based promotion strategy. Your portfolio should - if possible - be available (and searchable) on your own, self-hosted website. Digital portfolio options: - App-based - on a tablet for example (Morpholio, Portfolio, etc.) - PDF - a document you can print or share - Web platform - hosted on someone else's platform (Behance, Issu, Coroflot, Houzz) - Website (self-hosted) - you own the domain, you control the online real estate. The only option I recommend today is the self-hosted website portfolio. I recommend using Squarespace to get started if you don't have one already. Their templates are modern, minimal, and you'll spend time on filling it with great work rather than fussing over the layout - the container. I recommend you take cues from the portfolios of other architects you'd like to work for or whose work you'd like to emulate. Study how they're compiling their portfolios. Learn from them. What to include: 1) Sketches 2) Academic vs. Built work 3) Models 4) Renders What Not to Include: 1) Work you didn't design 2) Old work 3) Lengthy text 4) Spelling errors 5) Poor photography 6) Construction documents 7) Irrelevant work experience 8) Hobbies I also discuss the best way to share your portfolio via email and let you in on an opportunity to have your portfolio reviewed by me on the channel (hint: you have to be a subscriber). // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? The head-to-toe assessment in nursing is an important physical health assessment that you'll be performing as a nursing student and nurse. Head-to-toe assessments allow nurses to assess the health status of patients by following a checklist of criteria. On the job, your head-to-toe nursing assessment will be performed much faster, and it may be different or more specialized to accommodate the patients' needs within your nursing specialty. This assessment represents a general assessment checklist (or cheat sheet) that you might encounter in nursing school. (Note: Always follow your instructor's requirements or your employer's assessment protocols). This nursing head-to-toe examination video guide will focus on the following areas/skills: -Vital Signs (pulse rate, respiration rate, temperature, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, pain assessment) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpGuSxDQ8js&t=103s -Cranial Nerve examination -Head assessment (hair, cranium, eyes, nose, mouth, ears, sinuses) -Neck assessment (jugular vein, thyroid, trachea, carotid) -Heart sounds assessment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H48WsyIjFs0&t=73s -Lung sounds assessment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNrcG077brQ -Abdominal assessment -Assessing extremities (arms, hands, legs, feet) -Back assessment -and more While performing your comprehensive head-to-toe assessment, you'll want to record your findings in the documentation. GradSchoolHeaven.com founder and Harvard graduate Giulio Rocca discusses the 10 most common interview questions asked by graduate schools. Web: http://www.gradschoolheaven.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gradschoolheaven Twitter: https://twitter.com/gradheaven Abridged Transcript: Today, I'll be talking to you about the 10 most common graduate school interview questions. Some schools, particularly when applying to doctoral programs, will invite candidates to an on-campus interview. These interviews are generally frightening to candidates because there's not much in the way of guidance as to what to expect. 1. The first is to tell me more about yourself. There’s a good chance you’ll be asked this question. The most important thing that you want to do is to have a synthesized answer, no more than one or two minutes, that showcases your personal, academic, and professional accomplishments in a nutshell. In other words, a kind of preview. Don’t go on a rant, and don’t go on a tangent! 2. Second, you may be asked: why are you interested in this field? Again, go back to your personal statement and think about what you wrote in that statement and try to expand on it. Perhaps you can go deeper into some of the reason that you discussed or introduce addition reasons that were not discussed in the personal statement. in either case, try to make a compelling case as to why this particular field is what you were born to do. 3. Third, why are you interested in our school? This is almost certainly going to be asked in the interview process. Think about specific elements of the program that set it apart -- the faculty, the facilities, the curriculum, student activities, job placement record, and other reasons -- and make a compelling argument once again. 4. Fourth, what are you going to research? This is particularly relevant if you’re applying to a doctoral program, but for master’s applicants too there’s often a master’s thesis and this is something that you can mention. In answering this question, you don’t necessarily have to have a definitve answer that you’re going to be held accountable to, as much as you want to demonstrate that you’ve conducted some preliminary thinking on the subject and that you're a serious candidate for such research. 5. Fifth, think about your strengths and weaknesses; your interviewer may very well ask you to talk about them. For strengths, pick ones that are relevant to academia, for example critical thinking, quantitative abilities, qualitative abilities, research capabilities, and so forth. And with respect to weaknesses, try to pick weakness that are really weakness turning into strengths; so, for example, if you’re a soft-spoken individual you might say that your weakness is that you’re occasionally soft-spoken but that you’ve taken steps to be more assertive. 6. Sixth, you’ll probably be asked, in so many words, why they should accept you. Have a bullet-proof answer for this question. Talk about your personal, academic, and professional achievements, discuss your long-range plans and how you plan to take full advantage of the university’s resources to make them come true. You want to convince them that they’re not going to be wasting an admissions spot with you. 7. Seventh, you may be asked to discuss your career goals. If you’re applying to a doctoral program, it’s usually appropriate to discuss the probability of teaching, and if you’re applying to a master’s program you can also discuss the possibility of extending your studies in a doctoral program or professional applications. 8. Eight, you may be asked where else you’re applying. This is a very difficult question to navigate. If you answer and provide full details about all the place that you’re applying to, you may dilute your application to the university in question. On the other hand, if you’re too secretive you may alienate your interviewer. A possible middle of the road approach is to indicate that you’ve applied to a number of other universities, without being too specific, but reiterate how important it is for you to be accepted to the one that you’re talking about today. Reiterate your desire and how much you’d love to have a position in the program. 9. Ninth, you may be asked to discuss what you’ve read recently. Ideally, you should be able to cite scholarly publications, whether it’s journal articles or books published by academics that demonstrate that you’re connected with the community. 10. Tenth, you may be asked if you have any questions for the interviewer. Think about these questions carefully; you can prepare them ahead of time so you’re not nervous. Try to ask questions that either delve more deeply into the interviewer’s background and research interests or that explore aspects of the program that are not obviously stated on the web site or the marketing materials of the university.

My videos are vocabulary-based for conversation practice. Each video is themed to provide context for learning. To insure success, every video is designed with open slots for vocabulary substitution practice. These patterns allow students to practice on their own and teachers can have their class practice together as a group. These videos also work great for icebreakers and class discussions.
