Motion sickness or travel sickness is feeling sick when you travel by car, boat, plane or train. This weeks video is about the symptoms, causes, remedies and medicines (pills, tablets) to treat motion sickness. Motion sickness (travel sickness) is common, especially in children. It is caused by repeated unusual movements during travelling, which send strong (sometimes confusing) signals to the balance and position sensors in the brain. I've always suffered from motion sickness since a young age and like most people I really don't like it. Thankfully I now know what to do and I'm going to share that knowledge with you in this weeks video. This video was sponsored by Dr Fox (Online Doctor & Pharmacy): https://www.doctorfox.co.uk SYMPTOMS OF MOTION SICKNESS: • Feeling sick (nausea) • Sweating • Increase in saliva • Headaches • Feeling cold and going pale • Feeling weak HOW TO PREVENT MOTION SICKNESS: Prepare for your journey • Don't eat a heavy meal before travelling. • On long journeys, try breaking the journey to have some fresh air, drink some cold water and, if possible, take a short walk. Where you sit • Keep motion to a minimum. For example, sit in the front of a car, over the wing of a plane, or on deck in the middle of a boat. • On a boat, stay on deck and avoid the cafeteria or sitting where your can smell the engines. Breathing and smell • Breathe fresh air if possible. For example, open a car window. • Avoid strong smells, particularly petrol and diesel fumes. This may mean closing the window and turning on the air conditioning, or avoiding the engine area in a boat. Using your eyes and ears differently • Close your eyes (and keep them closed for the whole journey). This reduces 'positional' signals from your eyes to your brain and reduces the confusion. • Try listening to an audio book with your eyes closed. There is some evidence that distracting your brain with audio signals can reduce your sensitivity to the motion signals. • Try to sleep - this works mainly because your eyes are closed, but it is possible that your brain is able to ignore some motion signals when you are asleep. • Do not read or watch a film. • It is advisable not to watch moving objects such as waves or other cars. Instead, look ahead, a little above the horizon, at a fixed place. OVER THE COUNTER MEDICINES Always speak to your pharmacist they will be able to recommend the best treatment for you or your child. Medicines are best taken before the journey. They may still help even if you take them after symptoms have begun, although once you feel sick you won't absorb medicines from the stomach very well. Some medicines used for motion sickness may cause drowsiness. Some people are extremely sensitive to this and may find that they are so drowsy that they can't function properly at all. Always speak to your pharmacist and read the information leaflet. Hyoscine is usually the most effective over the counter medicine for motion sickness. It works by preventing the confusing nerve messages going to your brain. There are several brands of medicines which contain hyoscine - they come in a tablet, patch and soluble form for children. Certain antihistamines can also be useful, although they are not quite as effective as hyoscine for motion type sickness. However, they usually cause fewer side-effects for example, cinnarizine. WHEN TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR: There are a number of anti-sickness medicines which can only be prescribed by your healthcare professional. Let them know what you’ve tired as finding what medicine works best can sometimes be a case of trial and error. Want to see more videos about everything health and pharmacy? Check out our latest video on this topic: https://youtu.be/e_YQO-l32Tk Tips about sea sickness (or motion sickness) and how to prevent or alleviate the symptoms. See our episode on wrist bands here: https://youtu.be/qI2MTZRvuBs Hi, I'm Sheri from CruiseTipsTV. Today we are going to talk about something that can absolutely ruin your cruise ... and we're going to give you a few tips about how to avoid it. Here's the scenario, you've subscribe to our channel, and watched all our tip videos, and ... Wait, you haven't subscribed? Well do it now then. I'll wait. Okay, so you've watched the videos and planned everything, but on your cruise you suddenly feel dizzy and nauseous, and it's getting worse. Yes, it's the most hated of hated, motion sickness. It can happen to anyone, but the common symptoms of nausea, vomiting and dizziness can generally be prevented and treated. And we've collected a few tips to help you do just that. These aren't in any specific order, and what works for you may not work for others. So, Pack and be prepared with a few options just in case. 1. We'll start with what I use occasionally - a wristband. This helps prevent symptoms from occurring. These wristbands are sold at drugstores under brand names like Sea-Band and BioBands, and they have a hard round button that gently presses against an acupressure point in your wrist, which is said to control nausea. 2. Perhaps the most common approach is over-the-counter medication containing dimenhydrinate or diphenhydramine. You'll see these marketed under several brand names, but look for those active ingredients. According to the Mayo Clinic, you should begin taking the medication half-hour to an hour before boarding. This give the medication time to work. Then continue taking it as directed by the usage instructions. 3. If you prefer a more natural approach, ginger root can be very effective. Many scientific (and not so scientific) studies have confirmed it. Our advice however, pack this (ginger candy) not this (ginger root). You can also try ginger tablets, capsules or cookies on your next cruise. It's best to start using this natural remedy at least 24 hours before you embark on your cruise. Most studies recommend ginger for mild cases, and it may not be effective in all instances. 4. The Mayo Clinic also suggests using a prescription scopolamine patch if you have experienced motion sickness in the past and haven't had success with over the counter medication. Apply the patch to the skin behind your ear. Replace it with a fresh patch every three days. Obviously it's best to discuss this with you doctor. 5. This one may not always make the most sense, but it could be effective in some circumstances. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, keeping your eyes on one fixed point reduces aggravating stimuli that can cause motion sickness symptoms. Taking a trip to the top deck on the ship and looking out at the horizon may help when you start to feel ill. Here are a couple more quick tips to remember. 1. Dehydration can make the symptoms worse, so drink plenty of water during the day. 2. Pick a cabin near the middle of the ship if you are prone to motion sickness. The motion of the ship is less noticeable in this area. The further you are away from the "motion of the ocean" the less motion you'll feel. So a midship cabin on a lower deck could be a good choice if you suffer from motion sickness. That's it for this episode. Be sure to check us out on twitter @CruiseTipsTV. Now get out there and cruise. If you like this video, please like and subscribe. And please, share our videos with fellow cruisers. We have more on the way. Until then, we'll see you on the high seas.

Here's how the most motion sick person in the world, Chuck Fresh, was able to cruise happily. I have tried Bonine, Dramamine, Garlic, Ginger, those stupid bracelets, and NOTHING else worked except this Transderm Scop Scopalamine patch thing. It's a freakin' miracle. #cruising Side effects include dry mouth, a little trouble swallowing, on day one, and you may be a little tired at the end of the day, although I'm not completely convinced it's the meds. It may have been the drink package...

Top 10 Over The Counter Drugs - Top 10 Drugs -Types Of Illegal Drugs Thanks For Watching 1: Oxymetazoline is a drug used in a widely-used commercial nasal spray called Afrin. It does not have a particularly strong high, and is instead more likely to cause psychosis in those who use it, some of whom have reported recurring hallucinations. What makes this drug noteworthy is just how addicting it is. Doctors have found that those hooked on it simply cannot function without the drug. 2: Propylhexedrine is the active drug in a nasal spray called Benzedrex, and it originally replaced amphetamine sulfate as the active ingredient years back due to abuse. Unfortunately, Propylhexedrine is also capable of abuse. Recreational users have been known to use some sort of extraction process to gain crystals from it, and it has hence earned the nickname “stove top speed,” due to the effect that it has on people. 3: Dimenhydrinate is a drug that most of you probably know as Dramamine, and is mainly used to combat motion sickness. It is also a deliriant, and is popular among recreational drug users for the audio and visual hallucinations that it provides in high doses. Setting it apart from its cousin Diphenhydramine, it is reported to also have a euphoric effect, along with the hallucinations. 4: Diphenhydramine usually goes by the trade name Benadryl; it is marketed to deal mainly with allergies, but is also often used as a sedative when people are having trouble sleeping. It has some popularity among recreational drug users, due to its affect as a deliriant. When recreational users take a high dose, they can expect such symptoms as drowsiness, fatigue, disturbed coordination, dizziness, blurred vision, confusion, and hallucinations, which are somehow considered positive things by recreational users. 5: Kratom, referred to in scientific literature as Mitragyna Speciosa, is a plant native to Southeast Asia. This plant is from the same family as coffee, and is often used medicinally to relieve pain. However, it has gained recent popularity in the United States for its psychoactive properties. It is currently unregulated, and can easily be bought at online or at certain “herbal supplement” stores. 6: Kava is an herb that comes from the Pacific Islands, where the islanders have been using it medicinally for a very long time. They crush the herb and use it to make a tea-like beverage, which is supposed to be relaxing, but also consumed as part of tradition among the islanders 7: Tramadol is not an opioid; however, it affects the brain in a very similar way. It acts as an analgesic, and has opiate agonist activity, which gives people a feeling similar to opioids, though it is not as strong. It is often abused by recovering addicts, or people looking for a more easily-obtainable high similar to heroin, or other synthetic opioids such as Vicodin. 8: Doxylamine, which often goes under the trade name Unisom, is an antihistamine. Normally, Doxylamine is used to treat allergies, and in some cases for its sedative effects, as a means to treat insomnia. It is sometimes mixed with Acetaminophen or Codeine, to be used as an analgesic. While it has perfectly valid uses and can be bought at any grocery store, it is abused occasionally by teens looking for a cheap legal high. 9: Codeine was originally the main active ingredient used for suppressing coughs; however, Codeine is a powerfully addictive substance. Dextromethorpan, more commonly known as DXM, was created to be a non-addictive replacement to Codeine. While DXM is not addictive, most cough syrups contain other ingredients, such as Acetaminophen or Guaifenesin, which are extremely dangerous when taken in large amounts. 10: Diethyl Ether, more commonly just called Ether, is mainly used medically, as an anesthetic. However, it also has a long history of recreational use. In the late nineteenth century, it was used regularly in Ireland, Russia, France, Norway, the United States and elsewhere. The effect of ether was similar to alcohol, but it was cheaper, and allowed someone to sober up quicker, making it popular among those who didn’t have much money. Sea Bands: http://amzn.to/2sAaMUW Lewis N. Clark: http://amzn.to/2sFYBRz Relief Band: http://amzn.to/2tFSQaR This time we are going to take a look at these motion sickness relief wrist straps. Do they really help with sea sickness? We’ve done a previous episode (https://youtu.be/ppNAhhvGm5s) that covers these and other ways to deal with motion sickness. We’ll have a link to that in the description below. In this video we are just going to talk about the bands, and how they're supposed to work, and if they really help. All right, if you’ve not heard of these before here’s the scoop. These and similar wristbands or bracelets use an acupressure principle. There is a small stud on the band that applies constant pressure to something called “the P6 point” on your wrist. It’s on the inner part of your wrists … about right here. If you suffer from mild seasickness, these might be a good thing to try first. They do seem to work for me. Since I don’t really like using over the counter medicine like Dramamine, these are usually my first line of defense. They are really simple to use. I try to get them on about three fingers away from my wrist crease, and then kind of center the button here. What I like about these is they are simple, relatively inexpensive, and oh so stylish … don’t you think? Okay, so maybe not so stylish, but better than feeling queasy. The down side of these, at least for me, is they are really only effective for mild cases. There have been times on smaller ships, and in rougher seas where these just didn’t cut it. Here are my final thoughts. If you struggle with seasickness, these are worth considering as part of a larger strategy for dealing with it. Check out our older video on the topic for more information. If the problem is severe for you, see your doctor before you sail. There are a lot of options, so don’t risk ruining your cruise. We got these at the luxurious TJ-Maxx, but we’ll find something similar on Amazon and post a link on our website CruiseTipsTV.com

Tip A window can help put the rocking motion into perspective but can also worsen the feelings of nausea as more objects are moving. Step 5: Stare into the horizon Focus on the horizon and scenery rather than the water or the movement of the boat. If you feel queasy, stand; sitting or lying down can increase nausea. Step 6: Eat hard candy Suck on hard candy or eat dry crackers to help keep nausea in check. Did You Know? Did you know? Some people who take long cruises suffer "landsickness" for a few days after their trip as their body readjusts to being on firm ground.

Step 1: Take motion sickness medication Take an over-the-counter motion sickness medication, like Dramamine, at least an hour before you begin going on rides. But don’t take anything if you’re going to be behind the wheel, as these meds can cause drowsiness. Step 2: Take some ginger If you want a natural remedy, take a capsule or two of powdered ginger, available at health stores. Studies have shown ginger is effective in combating motion sickness. Step 3: Stay hydrated Sip water throughout the day. Being dehydrated increases your risk of ride-induced nausea and headaches. Step 4: Don’t stuff yourself Resist the urge to stuff yourself. Getting on a ride with a belly full of funnel cakes and corn dogs is just asking for it. Tip Enjoy whatever junk food you want by eating mini-meals throughout the day. Step 5: Sit in the front If you have a choice, always sit in the front of the ride. Your chances of getting nauseous are higher in the back. Step 6: Avoid multiple motion Avoid rides with multiple motions. Sitting in a cup that is twirling, tilting, rising, and descending—all while moving counterclockwise—is a recipe for disaster. Tip Rides with the highest barf factor are those that spin or rock back and forth, roller coasters with turns that are tight and frequent, and rides that often go upside down. Step 7: Try pressure point bracelets Try wearing pressure point bracelets; some people find them very effective. They’re available at drugstores. Did You Know? In 2003, an American man rode a roller coaster in an English amusement park for 401 hours, or more than 16 days.

The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airsickness Airsickness is a sensation which is induced by air travel. It is a specific form of motion sickness, and is considered a normal response in healthy individuals. Airsickness occurs when the central nervous system receives conflicting messages from the body (including the inner ear, eyes and muscles) affecting balance and equilibrium. The inner ear is particularly important in the maintenance of balance and equilibrium because it contains sensors for both angular (rotational) and linear motion. Airsickness is usually a combination of spatial disorientation, nausea and vomiting... Symptoms Common symptoms of airsickness include: Nausea, vomiting, vertigo, loss of appetite, cold sweating, skin pallor, difficulty concentrating, confusion, drowsiness, headache, and increased fatigue. Severe airsickness may cause a person to become completely incapacitated. Susceptibility The following factors increase some people's susceptibility to airsickness: - Fatigue, stress, and anxiety, are some factors that can increase susceptibility to motion sickness of any type. - The use of alcohol, drugs, and medications may also contribute to airsickness. - Additionally, airsickness is more common in women (especially during menstruation or pregnancy), young children, and individuals prone to other types of motion sickness. - Although airsickness is uncommon among experienced pilots, it does occur with some frequency in student pilots. Treatment Medication Medications that may alleviate the symptoms of airsickness include: - meclozine (Antivert, Bonine) - dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) - diphenhydramine (Benadryl) - scopolamine (available in both patch and oral form). Pilots who are susceptible to airsickness should not take anti-motion sickness medications (prescription or over-the-counter). These medications can make one drowsy or affect brain functions in other ways. Non-pharmacologic remedies A method to increase pilot resistance to airsickness consists of repetitive exposure to the flying conditions that initially resulted in airsickness. In other words, repeated exposure to the flight environment decreases an individual’s susceptibility to subsequent airsickness. Recently, several devices have been introduced that are intended to reduce motion sickness through stimulation of various body parts (usually the wrist). Natural remedies There are numerous alternative remedies for motion sickness. One such is ginger, but it is ineffective.

At Research Rounds on January 30, Dr Behrang Keshavarz spoke on the topic of Motion Sickness in Simulators – Causes and Countermeasures. Over the last year, the market for virtual reality (VR) has exploded, selling millions of home-based VR kits. A conservative estimate has nearly 200,000 individuals having felt simulator sickness while experiencing VR. This problem is very relevant to TRI, with our emphasis on research through simulation of experience. DriverLab, outfitted with an actual Audi, will be used to assess at-risk drivers, determine the effect medication has on driving, tackle drowsy driving and roll out a customized driving license program. However, before the simulator can be put to optimal use, the potential for motion sickness has to be reduced – if not totally eliminated. The difference between real motion sickness (what we experience in cars / boats/ planes) and visually induced motion sickness (what is felt in the simulator) is that real motion is typically absent in the latter. However, both are thought to be caused by sensory conflict between visual and vestibular input (what we get and what we expect). Gender, age, ethnicity, visual field, postural sway and time lag are all factors that affect the severity of motion sickness. Medications used to mitigate real motion sickness cannot be used by participants in the driving simulator because side effects would influence the testing process. For example, we can’t test normal drowsy driving with drivers that have been sedated with over-the-counter anti-motion sickness drugs. Behrang has had success in reducing simulator sickness by increasing air flow, providing a pleasant ambience and by playing self-selected playlists of favourite music. These methods will be tested in DriverLab to alleviate simulator sickness and help keep our research participants focused on the simulated road.

Ginger has long been used as a natural remedy for motion sickness. It is most effective when used as a deterrent to motion sickness when on the water. It’s so good at what it does that it has even been shown to outdo OTC medications like Dramamine. It knocks out all of the accompanying symptoms of motion sickness, so you don’t have to worry about getting dizzy, feeling nauseous, breaking into cold sweats, or worse, puking out the window or over the side of the boat. ✔ WEBSITE: http://www.curejoy.com/content/ ✔ FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/CureJoyInc ✔ INSTAGRAM: https://instagram.com/curejoy ✔ TWITTER: https://twitter.com/curejoy ✔ PINTEREST: http://www.pinterest.com/Curejoy/

In another episode of 60-Second Cruise Tips, Gary Bembridge, author of "The Cruise Traveler's Handbook", "Essential Cruise Tips" and "River Cruising Essential Tips and Tricks" shares another cruise tip. This time it is: Seasickness Seasickness is unpleasant and cruise lines do everything they can to reduce the probability of you suffering from it. Steps they take include scheduling and sailing itineraries that minimise the chance of encountering rough seas, using ships equipped with stabilisers to help keep the ship steady in rough seas and swells and taking advantage of modern radar systems to avoid poor weather. If you are concerned or prone to seasickness there are a number of steps you can take such as traveling in a cabin in the middle of the ship and low down as movement is least here and take over-the-counter motion sickness pills like dimenhydrinate (marketed as Dramamine, Gravol, etc.) in North America and cinnarazine (marketed as Stugeron or Stunarone) in Europe. You must buy them before you go. They may make you drowsy for a few hours, but resolve the problem. If you do not want to use medication here are some other tips: Try the pressure pads behind the ears or wrist bands. Both are available at drugstores and pharmacies. Eat ginger. Look at the horizon and get fresh air. Go on a river cruise as you will not suffer from motion sickness. If none of the above work, visit the medical centre as they will offer an injection which will make you sleep usually but will solve the problem fast.Do not let the fear of sickness put you off a cruise! You've got the car packed for your next road trip, your route is planned, but that sinking feeling sets in. A queasy stomach can affect any car passenger. Car sickness results from a conflict between the eye and ear: the inner ears detect that the car is moving, but the eyes, focused within the car, do not. The brain receives conflicting signals, and nausea results, per many pediatricians. Follow these tips to avoid car sickness: 1. Choose the Right Foods -- Before and during your road trip, eat bland foods. Avoid spicy, greasy foods and alcohol consumption. Don't eat foods that have caused stomach upset in the past. Bring along crackers, ginger candy, mints, soda water and ginger ale. 2. Keep your Eyes on the Scenery -- Reading books, watching movies and playing video games can all cause or worsen car sickness. Look outside the car instead, preferably out the front window. Find a focal point and keep your eyes on that. 3. Take Short Breaks -- Give your stomach a break by stopping the car, especially if you are feeling queasy. Walk around a bit and get some fresh air. 4. Call Shotgun -- Sitting in the front seat can reduce the conflicting signals of your brain. Looking forward is better than looking out the side window because the scenery seems to fly by quickly. *Do not put car seats in the front seat or change rear-facing seats to forward. 5. Use Medication -- Try over the counter medications such as Dramamine, Benadryl or Bonine. If all else fails, get a prescription from your doctor. Be prepared for a motion sickness reaction by buying lined disposable bags. These work at home as well. Your car and other passengers will thank you. Car sickness shouldn't prevent car rides and road trips. It may take time to find the right combination of tips to help you feel better. Start with short rides, see what works and work up to longer drives. Check with your doctor for proper medical advice -- my tips are suggestions and not a substitute. Fun road trips with friends or family are now not just in my imagination but a part of my reality”. Before using NoMo Nausea bands I slept through car rides so I would not have to deal with the extreme nausea that came with my motion sickness. But that took away the fun in road trips and I felt like I had missed out on a part of traveling. Although setting reminders in my phone to take nausea pills worked somewhat, I had trouble finding an over the counter medicine for nausea that worked effectively and was affordable. I hated having to wait half an hour or even hours for the nausea medication to work. Plus, I feared forgetting to pack the antiemetic pills or losing them in my suitcase. But NoMo Nausea bands cure nausea in 30 seconds, are affordable and all I have to do is put it on my wrist. Moreover, no one asks why I’m taking pills or wearing a random patch on my arm, a NoMo Nausea band just looks like a bracelet. Furthermore, when I go traveling I like being able to explore and indulge in activities I might not get to do back home. So, motion sickness patches or nausea pills that can’t get wet or easily come off wouldn’t work for me. It’s as if the CEO of NoMo Nausea bands completely read my mind because they are waterproof and have a perfectly slim and snug design! So, if you’re asking yourself, what can I take for nausea? Are you planning a Cruise with family? Watch the video and be sure to subscribe to the Mom Traveler YouTube Page. You can you check out my blog at a Brunette's Reflection http://neashahill.com/ In 2013, we set sail for the Bahamas on our very first cruise on the Carnival Fascination. I brought my over the counter motion sickness pills and thought I would be good to go, I WAS WRONG. EVER. SO WRONG. I was sick pretty much the whole time. Next time, if there is a next time (which I highly doubt) I will go to the doctor and get something prescribed! Our Youngest son traveled with us on this trip, at the time he was 13 and he really enjoyed himself in the game room meeting other kids his age. This provided some alone time for my husband and I, which we spent meandering through the ship, shops and sushi bar. I did see people on deck and at the restaurants with very young babies and younger kids. When we were docked next to the Disney Cruise Ship in Nassau we could see MANY more water slides and large televisions on deck for entertainment. Of course, the price reflects these amenities on the Disney Cruises. The stop at Half Moon Cay seemed to take forever to transport us from the ship to the private island. Which ate into our beach time and I love my beach time… The views at Half Moon Cay were amazing and the beach was very clean. Overall it, was a nice trip, besides the seasickness and the time delay for Half Moon Cay. The service provided by the staff was amazing and they work very hard so remember this at the end of your trip when you leave your tips. Out of 10 stars, I would give it a 7 star rating.
