Important Facts About Vitamin K. Its Types, Benefits & Best Vitamin K Sources. Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that is most well-known for the important role it plays in blood clotting. However, vitamin K is also absolutely essential to build strong bones and prevent heart disease. In fact, vitamin K is sometimes referred to as the forgotten vitamin, because its major benefits are often overlooked. Following are some important facts about vitamin K that will help you to discover why vitamin K is one supplement you may need. There are three types of vitamin K. Vitamin K1 is found naturally in plants. Vitamin K2 is made by the bacteria that line the gastrointestinal tract. Vitamin K3 is manmade and therefore should not be consumed. Vitamin K is fat-soluble. That means in order for the body to absorb it effectively, you need to eat some fatty foods along with it. These are the biggest sources of vitamin k. Collard Greens, Spinach, Salad Greens, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Olive Oil, Okra, Green Beans, Lentils. Fermented foods, such as natto, have the highest concentration of Vitamin K found in the human diet; a level that far exceeds the amount found in dark green vegetables. It improves bone density by helping direct calcium into the bone matrix. Vitamin K has been proven to slow the growth of cancer cells and are shown to benefit in treating leukemia. Having a deficiency in vitamin K can interfere with insulin release and blood sugar regulation in ways similar to diabetes. It also has antioxidant properties and is a topical vitamin, which helps reduce bruising. If you or your family have a history of osteoporosis or heart disease, it is vital to add vitamin K to your diet. A recommended three thousand mcg of vitamin K are recommended daily. Pregnant or nursing mothers should avoid vitamin K supplements. Supplements attain a higher dosage of the vitamin, which can induce toxicity in infants. A CRUCIAL VITAMIN for Heart and Bone Health VITAMIN K2; Vitamin K1 is important for proper blood clotting. Vitamin K2 works synergistically with calcium, magnesium and vitamin D to impart a number of important health benefits Vitamin K2 deficiency produces the symptoms of vitamin D toxicity, which includes inappropriate calcification of soft tissues that can lead to atherosclerosis Health benefits of vitamin K2 include preventing osteoporosis and heart disease, optimizing sexual function, reducing your risk of diabetes and cancer, improving symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and knee osteoarthritis and more Research found taking 180 micrograms per day of MK-7 vitamin K2 for three years improved arterial stiffness in postmenopausal women, especially those who had a high degree of arterial stiffness Pooled evidence show vitamin K2 supplementation can reduce vertebral fractures by 60 percent and hip and other nonvertebral fractures by 80 percent. A recent article in Life Extension Magazine also highlights the cardiovascular benefits of vitamin K2. Importantly, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in 2015 found that taking 180 micrograms (mcg) per day of vitamin K2 (MK-7 form) for three years improved arterial stiffness in postmenopausal women, especially those who had a high degree of arterial stiffness. At the end of the study, the treatment group had a 5.8 percent lower stiffness index beta (a parameter of arterial stiffness) and a 3.6 percent lower carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (a test that measures arterial stiffness). The placebo group, on the other hand, saw a 1.3 and 0.22 percent increase in these measurements respectively. This study has been lauded as significant because while previous studies have only been able to show an association, this is the first to confirm that long-term use of vitamin K2 in the form of MK-7 does improve cardiovascular health. Prior to this study, it was unclear whether taking additional vitamin K2 could actually reverse calcification of the arteries that had already occurred. As noted in Life Extension:16 “This is the first long-term human trial showing improvements in measures of arterial stiffness in response to long-acting vitamin K2. While the 5.8 percent and 3.6 percent improvements might not appear substantial, when realizing that calcification often worsens with age, the fact that there was a reversal in arterial stiffness compared to placebo is quite remarkable … This provides us all with an opportunity to restore more youthful flexibility to aging blood vessels and other soft tissues.”

Some studies suggest that it helps maintain strong bones in the elderly.Food Sources The best way to get the daily requirement of vitamin K is by eating food sources. Vitamin K is found in the following foods:Green leafy vegetables, such as kale, spinach, turnip greens, collards, Swiss chard, mustard greens, parsley, romaine, and green leaf lettuce Vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage Fish, liver, meat, eggs, and cereals (contain smaller amounts) Vitamin K is also made by the bacteria that line the gastrointestinal tract. Side Effects Vitamin K deficiency is very rare. It occurs when the body can't properly absorb the vitamin from the intestinal tract. Vitamin K deficiency can also occur after long-term treatment with antibiotics. People with vitamin K deficiency are usually more likely to have bruising and bleeding. If you take blood thinning drugs (such as anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs), you may need to limit vitamin K foods. You should know that vitamin K or foods containing vitamin K can affect how these drugs work It is important for you to keep vitamin K levels in your blood about the same from day to day. Inadequate calcium intake can lead to decreased bone mineral density (BMD), which can increase the risk of bone fractures. For decades calcium has been the go-to dietary supplement for improving bone health. However, several studies show that supplementing with calcium exclusively is not enough. The body needs to optimise the use of calcium, making sure it is directed to and utilised by the bones. For healthy bones calcium needs to be deposited into bones and vitamin K2 has been found to be the key nutrient that makes that happen. Recent scientific evidence suggests that elevated calcium consumption accelerates calcium deposits in blood vessel walls and soft tissues, which may raise the risk for heart disease. In contrast, vitamin K2 has been shown to prevent arterial calcification and arterial stiffening, which could be a means of lowering calcium-associated health risks. In fact, studies have shown that by striking the right calcium-K2 balance, it may be possible to fight osteoporosis while preventing the calcification and stiffening of the arteries.

The main cause of weakness in bones is due to deficiency of calcium. Vitamin D is very necessary for our bones because it absorbs calcium from our food. Make habit of absorbing vitamin D in your day to day life. Weak bones disease is found in higher levels in women as compare to man . At the age of 70 – 80 years each and every women gets infected with bone disorder such as osteoporosis. Due to excess drinking and smoking our bones gets easily effected and will deteriorate at early ages. These habits makes our bones very weak. Fenugreek seeds, you can make your bones tough and strong. In this process, first of all grind fenugreek seeds. Eat 5g to 10g Fenugreek seeds on daily basis.. Children can use fenugreek in 3g to 6g on daily basis. Fenugreek leaves can be use by mixing in Bread (chapatti) and Parathas. We can transform our weak bones into strong with the help of Tomato. Tomato is rich source of lime, so with the help of tomato we can improve our bone health. By using Asgandh nagori (असगंध नागोरी), you can make your bones strong. take 1g to 2g Asgand Nagori powder and mixed half small spoon honey in this powder. Using these mixed material with milk in day and night. Lime can be used to give our bones strength. In this process put lime into the water and let it settle down for 6 hours, once lime settle down you have to take out whole water and consume 1g to 4g lime on alternate day basis(3-4 times in a week.) And after 6 hours when lime set down then water taking out from lime. And eat 1g to 4g lime in every two days. Babul can also used to reduce the weakness of bones. Take 6g babul root and convert it into the powder. Eat this powder with honey and goat milk. Take 100g Shilajeet and 100g FICUS RELIGIOSA (पीपल) tree milk and mix them properly and give them small round shape like peas (मटर का दाना) out of these materials. Consume 4 peas daily in morning and evening with milk. In this process, you need Coconut copra (नारियल की गिरी) and turmeric and piece of cloth. And put it on broken bone. Add these materials in ratio of 4:1 that means 4 part coconut copra and 1 part of turmeric powder. In this process, grind one onion and mix Turmeric powder into onion and bound it into the cloth and make a packet. And place it on sesame oil (तिल का तेल) and warm it for some time, once this packet comes to lukewarm stage bind it on broken bone, it will helpful in giving relief in broken bone. Soya bean can be helpful in reducing alkalinity of bones. In this type of disease bones are lacking with calcium and becomes weak easily. In this process, grind Arjun tree bark. And take it with the milk. By using this remedy you can get relief from swelling and pain of bones. Mix Arjun tree peel powder and Ghee together and bound this paste on broken bone for better relief.

12 Foods That Fight Osteoporosis and Promote Strong Bones

Our bones don’t get the credit they deserve. Yes, they allow us to move, and they protect internal organs. But we mainly focus on bones when they are bruised or broken. But imagine how we would look without them! Perhaps we need to nourish our bones now, while they are still in working order. This could potentially even prevent osteoporosis. In today’s video we’ll focus on 12 ways to maintain a diet rich in Vitamin D and calcium. 1. Coconut Oil Women who have been diagnosed with estrogen deficiency should consider adding virgin coconut oil to their diet. It may reverse and even stop the loss of bone density. Try consuming 3 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil daily. 2. Apples Another way to combat osteoporosis is by eating apples, which abound with antioxidants. The polyphenols and flavonoids work in concert to increase bone density by allowing the body to retain calcium. And be sure to include the skin when eating them. 3. Sesame Seeds These tiny tasty morsels are high in calcium. Sesame seeds are also a great source of magnesium, manganese and vitamins K and D. You can snack on a handful of roasted seeds anytime of the day. 4. Almond Milk Calcium is also plentiful in almond milk. Other essential minerals are contained in almond milk as well, including flavonoids which defend against osteoporosis by eliminating free radicals. Drinking almond milk is an excellent way to add magnesium, manganese and potassium to your diet. Here’s a recipe you may want to try daily: 1- Soak 1 cup of almonds overnight in a container of water; 2- Remove the peels and place in a blender; 3- Add 2 cups of water; 4- Blend until it liquefies; 5- Add a dash of cinnamon and/or honey (optional); 6- Strain and drink; 5. Prunes One way to help prevent fractures and maintain adequate bone density is to consume prunes daily. Since they are loaded with a high concentration of polyphenols, those antioxidants will help prevent bone loss. Prunes also contain other minerals that are essential in bone formation. The suggested daily requirement is 2 or 3, but consumption can gradually increase to 6-10 per day. 6. Pineapple This tropical fruit contains manganese, which is vital in preventing osteoporosis. Eating 1 cup of fresh pineapple daily will provide you with about 75% of the required daily dosage. Or you can drink 1 cup of pineapple juice. 7. Omega-3 Fatty Acids Salmon lovers don’t need to be encouraged to add it to their diets. It’s highly compacted with omega-3 fatty acids, which can keep our bones strong and healthy. If you haven’t acquired a taste for salmon, there are other ways to consume it. Simply stock up on walnuts, hemp or chia seeds. 8. Dark, Leafy Green Vegetables No wonder kale is making a splash at salad bars; it possesses too many essential vitamins to list! In fact, one cup of kale contains 684% of your vitamin K required daily allowance. While kale is king of vitamins, other dark green leafy vegetables are also good sources of vitamin K, including spinach and turnip greens. 9.
