Being “gifted” often feels far from a good thing, when you’re the one living it. And yet the myth persists that “gifted” is an elitist and privileged label in education. That “those kids” will be fine without any extra programs or supports. After all, what’s the worst that can happen – they get bored? In reality, many of our most vulnerable learners are those “gifted” kids who know they just don’t “fit it.” In our rush to identify and label children for purposes of funding and organizing our educational services most efficiently, we’re missing the ground level, actionable and everyday needs of an entire grouping of needy kids. Our most gifted, sensitive and creative students are our canaries in the coal mine; they are more sensitive to the world around them and the reactions we see in them can teach us what our education system needs to be, believe, include and stop. As is often the case, what is necessary for some is beneficial to all. Heidi approaches our education system from multiple perspectives. First and foremost, she is the mother of three amazing, gifted, creative and/or highly sensitive children! Heidi also spent almost six years as president of the City of Coquitlam‘s District Parent Advisory Council, attending countless advisory committees and working to build relationships between parents and teachers. And finally, she has worked with many passionate educators as an edtech consultant – participating in technology planning, facilitating dialogue and implementing technology to support student learning, communication and relationship building. She is an idealist, geek and deceptively social introvert. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Parents of gifted children often worry that their child will get bored in school, and many do just that. Homeschooling a gifted child is a great solution for children that are gifted in that they are more focused on a subject matter and more able to accomplish their goals. Gifted children often wind up being the class clown simply because they are bored in class. Their school work is already done and teachers don't want them to get ahead of the class so the student sits in his or her seat and is bored. Gifted students need more of a challenge than other students and homeschooling can easily allow theses students to work ahead of the class. These students excel in a specific subject and helping them to focus on that subject while incorporating all other subjects into it often works as a great method to help them get all of their subjects in and get them done. Homeschooling a gifted child may present a challenge to many parents who find that the child is actually smarter than they are. Utilizing online classes and other features such as tutors, college classes online and similar techniques can ease parents through this challenge. Homeschooling offers students and parents more quality time and gifted students often desire more time with parents. Gifted students have a lot of questions and can easily cause problems in the classroom because they question a teacher so thoroughly often distracting the teacher from more needy students. Gifted children often wait until the last minute to turn in assignments as doing the assignment isn't a challenge. Parents who choose homeschooling a gifted child find that their students get the work done and then spend their time excelling in a favorite topic or subject. Teaching kids to have self control is one of the most important character traits we can teach. Experts believe that kids who master self-regulation become masters of their learning, are more critical thinkers, and make healthier choices; and the benefits are life-long. As parents, I am sure we have observed that little kids have very minimal self-regulation and older kids have some! We adults have developed this self-regulation over time. While it is something that develops as we mature, should we leave the ability to self-regulate up to nature alone, or is there something we could do at home to help kids develop or strengthen this important skill? Some exciting research says self-regulation is something kids can learn. And the best part? It can be taught through play.

What is the purpose and value of Art education in the 21st Century? Foley makes the case the Art’s critical value is to develop learners that think like Artists which means learners who are creative, curious, that seek questions, develop ideas, and play. For that to happen society will need to stop the pervasive, problematic and cliché messaging that implies that creativity is somehow defined as artistic skill. This shift in perception will give educators the courage to teach for creativity, by focusing on three critical habits that artist employ, 1. Comfort with Ambiguity, 2. Idea Generation, and 3. Transdisciplinary Research. This change can make way for Center’s for Creativity in our schools and museums where ideas are king and curiosity reigns. Cindy Meyers Foley is the Executive Assistant Director and Director of Learning and Experience at the Columbus Museum of Art. Foley worked to reimagine the CMA as a 21st century institution that is transformative, active, and participatory. An institution that impacts the health and growth of the community by cultivating, celebrating and championing creativity. Foley envisioned and led the charge to open the 18,000 sq. ft. Center for Creativity in 2011. In 2013, the museum received the National Medal for Museums in recognition of this work. Foley guest edited and wrote chapters for Intentionality and the Twenty-First-Century Museum, for the summer 2014 Journal of Museum Education. In 2012, Foley received the Greater Columbus Arts Council Community Arts Partnership award for Arts Educator. She was a keynote speaker for the OAEA (Ohio Art Education Association) 2012 Conference. She is on the Faculty of Harvard University’s Future of Learning Summer Institute. Foley is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and The Ohio State University. Prior to joining the Museum, she was with the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Maine College of Art, the Portland Museum of Art, and the Wexner Center for the Arts. Learn Numbers Easy and Fast for Kids 2018 Subscribe to our channel: https://goo.gl/iG2Bdr #TalentedAndGifted #LearnWithKidsAcademy Kids Academy Talented and Gifted Program for kids aged 2-10: Numbers will form the basic foundation for your kid’s learning process. These are the first steps towards academic learning and this foundation needs to be very strong if you want your kid to grasp the upcoming concepts quickly and very firmly. Start with the number zero. Use some of the most common things around to use as examples to explain the concept of zero. Zero means ‘nothing’. So, if there were six ducks before but now they are all gone what do we say how many ducks are there now? Yes, we say zero. This will clear the concept of zero in the kid’s mind that when we say zero it means that there is no quantity of the particular thing present. Kids can learn anywhere and anytime, it all depends on how you use your environment to bring out some lessons from it. So, you must have been in an elevator with your kid multiple times. So why not use the floors as a counting lesson. Yes, it’s very easy and your kid will have some fun too. Count all the floors till which the elevator travels to. This will help the kid to memorize numbers in a more natural and easy way. Just like this, you can plan some other fun activities to help the kid learn numbers easy and fast. Pick up fun things from your own surrounding and it would make the lessons much more interesting for the kid. ***** Connect with us on : App Store: https://smart.link/59833db06a6b8 Google Play: https://smart.link/597210af6eb83 Our website: http://www.kidsacademy.mobi Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KidsAcademyC... To see more proven results and countless success stories sent by ecstatic parents and to download your copy of the said program go to: ►► http://children-learning-reading.org ◄◄ You can also "quickly" and "easily" teach your 2 to 7 year old child to "really" read and "decode" ALL different words and sentences (NOT just memorize some word shapes!), and become a fast and fluent Reader. For parents looking for reasons of why children should read, we've compiled a list below, in no particular order. ✓1. Reading expands a child's vocabulary. ✓2.The act of reading works as an exercise to improve reading fluency and comprehension. ✓3. You can't comprehend what you can't read. ✓4. Early reading skills directly relates to a child's future academic success. ✓5. The more you read, the better you are at it. This is a simple fact. ✓6. This is described by the Matthew Effect of reading where early success in reading leads to increased success later on, and conversely, children who are poor readers will have difficulty catching up, and some never do. ✓7. Reading early helps build independence and self confidence. ✓8. It opens up a whole new world of understanding and comprehension of the world around the child when the child is able to read. ✓9. It helps children make more sense of the world around them. ✓10. For safety! Early reading allows children to read and understand important labels and warning signs - such as "poison", "stop", "beware of dogs", "danger", and so on. ✓11. It increases your knowledge. The more your read, the more you know. ✓12. It takes you to places you've never been to before, and it enhances your imagination. ✓13. You learn about things, places, history, science, ideas, and so much more that you otherwise would not through reading. ✓14. Reading is a form of entertainment! It is fun! Would you rather sit your child in front of the idiot box or have your child read a fulfilling book? Rhetorical question. ✓15. Reading makes your child smarter, literally! That's a fact stated by researchers Cunningham and Stannovich in their report titled What Reading Does for the Mind. In their research, they also stated that reading not only increases your intelligence, it can even "help children compensate for modest levels of cognitive ability." ✓16. Reading to and with your children is one of the most rewarding bonding times for a family. ✓17. Reading helps you relax, and it is free! ✓18. Reading more helps you improve your writing skills. ✓19. it teaches you about grammar, sentence structures, and enhances your communication skills. ✓20. Books broaden your outlook and your horizons. Imagine you and your child a few weeks, months, or even years from now... Will your child still struggle to read, and will you still be frustrated and disappointed that your child have not learned to read or cannot read properly? Will your child end up being one of the 67% of all grade 4 children who cannot read proficiently? Or... Are you a proud parent of a happy, confident, smart child that learned to read early on and have developed superior reading and literacy skills that will benefit them for a life time? The choice is yours, but the future belongs to your child... If you are truly interested in helping your child develop the most important skill in life and you want to help your children develop to their fullest potential, then you owe it to yourself and your child to try the Children Learning Reading program. The majority of the people in this world look for the "miracle quick fix" that require little to no effort on their part, and they'll just keep looking until it's too late for their children. Children that learn to read early learn to love reading early on. I've found that all my older children just can't resist reading books that are in front of them, and the younger ones who can't read yet always emulate them by pretending to sound out and "read" the books. Children Learning Reading is a simple, step-by-step program that will help parents teach their children to read in just 12 weeks. Children as young as 2 or 3 to 7 years old can learn to read using this effective program. If you've had enough of all the other hyped "quick fix programs" that promise easy results - programs that sit your baby, your toddler or your child in front of the TV and computer for hours upon hours, that have failed you and your child in the past, and you are ready to teach your child to read the RIGHT way, then this is the honest and truly effective learning to read solution you've been searching for. There are private schools for autism, attention deficit, dyslexia and other learning differences, but none in all of Pennsylvania for gifted students. But, that's about to change. On Friday, the state Department of Education awarded a license to the Grayson School, which plans to open in the fall at a Greek Orthodox school in Broomall. The school will begin by serving students from kindergarten through sixth grade. The Grayson School, which will charge $21,800 tuition its first year, will offer individualized, accelerated instruction. It hopes to add grades in later years and ultimately serve students from K-through-12. The school aims to be funded primarily through tuition, grants, and donations and will not rely on tax dollars. The school plans to have a student-teacher ratio of 8 to 1 in core academic subjects, with smaller groups for specialized instruction. The curriculum, which is based on research in gifted education, will focus on projects. The languages offered will include Spanish, Mandarin, and computer coding. http://www.philly.com/philly/education/20150615_Pa__to_get_its_first_private_school_for_gifted_students.html http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by O&O Story Selection using http://wochit.com

This video sheds light on the difference between learning and studying. Studying implies acquiring knowledge from the sciences but learning is something vast. Learning is developing yourself. Studying can be related to the skill of reading a book, memorizing and then producing results on paper whereas learning is more of being creative and producing original ideas. Everybody likes a creative person and values them but still even today in schools the kids are judged on their studying capabilities. Studying is nothing but a small figment of what learning is, hence it's very important to understand the difference between the two and apply the difference to help children better else the children who are already smart tend to think they are not just because they can't study well. So keep the two separate and learn to learn more. Never miss a talk! SUBSCRIBE to the TEDx channel: http://bit.ly/1FAg8hB Help us caption and translate this video on Amara.org: http://www.amara.org/en/v/BWTt/ Jacob Barnett is an American mathematician and child prodigy. At 8 years old, Jacob began sneaking into the back of college lectures at IUPUI. After being diagnosed with autism since the age of two and placed in his school's special ed. program, Jacob's teachers and doctors were astonished to learn he was able to teach calculus to college students. At age nine, while playing with shapes, Jacob built a series of mathematical models that expanded Einstein's field of relativity. A professor at Princeton reviewed his work and confirmed that it was groundbreaking and could someday result in a Nobel Prize. At age 10, Jacob was formally accepted to the University as a full-time college student and went straight into a paid research position in the field of condensed matter physics. For his original work in this field, Jacob set a record, becoming the world's youngest astrophysics researcher. His paper was subsequently accepted for publication by Physical Review A, a scientific journal shared on sites such as NASA, the Smithsonian, and Harvard's webpage. Jacob's work aims to help improve the way light travels in technology. Jacob is also CEO and founder of Wheel LLC, a business he started in his mom's garage, and is in the process of writing a book to help end "math phobia" in his generation. Jacob's favorite pastime is playing basketball with the kids at his charity, Jacob's Place. It is a place where kids with autism are inspired every day to be their true authentic selves...just like Jacob.
