Vitamin D deficiency - 9 Signs and Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency You Can Identify Yourself You probably know that the primary source of vitamin D is right outside your door and up in the sky. The sun helps synthesize vitamin D in the skin — promoting the growth of strong muscles and bones, lowering blood pressure, and slowing the progression of multiple sclerosis. But just as vitamin D can promote good health, a lack of it may lead to health issues. For a number of reasons, many people aren’t getting enough vitamin D to stay healthy. This is called vitamin D deficiency. Here are 9 signs, symptoms and risk factors for Vitamin D deficiency. Science shows us that even immune cells contain Vitamin D receptors, demonstrating that Vitamin D exerts some level of influence over our immunity. If you’re getting sniffy more often than you’d like, it could be due to lack of Vitamin D. Slow healing of wounds after surgery or injury may be a sign that vitamin D levels are too low. If you have recently become overweight or obese, this could be a sign of low vitamin d and weight gain. Vitamin D is involved in maintaining bone health through a number of mechanisms. Bone pain and lower back pain may be signs of inadequate vitamin d deficiency fatigue levels in the blood. Vitamin d deficiency depression: A study published reports that inadequate levels of vitamin D in the bloodstream will double the chances of a depression diagnosis. Among the possible causes of TE include vitamin d deficiency hair loss. One study concluded that low ferritin and vitamin D levels were associated with both types of hair loss. Patients with autoimmune thyroiditis had significantly vitamin d deficiency thyroid, and that it correlated with thyroid antibodies. I had no idea all of these things were happening to me because of this and I am glad I finally know now. The exhaustion, inability to lose weight, body aches and mood swings are all because of lack of Vitamin D. I didn't know what was happening to me and why and I am very glad and fortunate that I decided to get blood work done to check on any damage I've done to my body from alcohol abuse and poor diet. I would have never have known this without it. Sorry this video was a little long but I wanted to get all of the details out there to share so that you knew what I am going through and perhaps you may be going through it too and not know you're Vitamin D deficient. How Vitamins D & K Blast Belly Fat is an in-depth explanation of the many benefits of vitamins D and K and how they work together to battle belly fat. Find out what the best food sources for these and how they actually help to clot the blood and assist the body in absorbing calcium. Learn all about the supplements that are most important with my coaching Blogs and Videos at http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com How Vitamin D3 Works 1. Vitamin D was discovered in 1920 where its importance in our bodies was realized in discovering a way to cure rickets, a painful bone disease in children (2) 2. Vitamin D fortified foods began within a decade, making rickets rare in the US (2) 3. Vitamins are defined as an essential nutrient that your body cannot produce on its own and must acquire from the diet - Vitamin D is not actually a vitamin, but a hormone, which is a chemical that regulates body physiology. (1) a. Your skin makes vitamin D when exposed to sunlights, so it does not need to acquire it from food if adequate sunlight is available (2) i. The only natural foods that contain vitamin D are fish and egg yolks (2) What Does Vitamin D Do? 1. We are discovering more and more ways that the body utilized vitamin D as time goes on a. Vitamin D receptors, proteins that bind to vitamin D, exists in many of the body’s tissues, including the heart, muscles, endocrine glands, prostate and many others. (2) 2. Bone health - vitamin D is essential for our bodies to be able to absorb calcium. Without enough vitamin D, the body absorbs only 10-15% of dietary calcium, versus 30-40% when our vitamin D levels are normal. How to Get Enough Vitamin D Now that we understand how important vitamin D is in our bodies, and how likely it is that we do not have enough, how do we get more? 1. Sunlight - It can be a good idea to first spend a bit of time in the sun before applying sunscreen a. spend 10-15 minutes three times per week without sunscreen on. This may be enough to prevent deficiencies (5) 2. Fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna and mackerel, and egg yolks (5) 3. Fortified foods: Many foods have been fortified with vitamin D, so look for this at your grocery store. Such foods include some milks, yogurts, orange juices and cereals (2) 4. Mushroom trick: mushrooms are a great source of natural vitamin D a. Exposing mushrooms to sunlight prior to eating them will ramp up their vitamin D levels! So sit them on your window sill or backyard prior to adding them to your food (6) 5. UV Lamps a. They are similar to tanning beds, but not identical. They carry the same skin-cancer risk as the sun or tanning beds, so be careful not to overdo it. These are a great option for those who live where there is little access to direct sunlight (8) 6. Supplementation: Last is supplementation. It is best to obtain some sunlight and concentrate on adding additional vitamin D in your diet. That being said, if you believe you are lacking vitamin D you can always buy supplements. Total recommended intake can vary from about 200 IU to 400 IU per day, including what you get from diet and sunlight. (5) 1. New Delhi, Feb 24 (ANI): A new study has examined that people who have low levels of vitamin D are more likely to have diabetes, regardless of how much they weigh. The study found that people who have low levels of vitamin D are more likely to be obese and they also are more likely to have Type 2 diabetes, prediabetes and metabolic syndrome than people with normal vitamin D levels. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and maintain bone and muscle health. The skin naturally produces this vitamin after exposure to sunlight. According t the study, vitamin D deficiency and obesity interact synergistically to heighten the risk of diabetes and other metabolic disorders. The average person may be able to reduce their risk by maintaining a healthy diet and getting enough outdoor activity.

It doesn't really exist. But, what I'm finding through a lot of research recently is that Vitamin D3 might be as close as we can get to something that can reduce belly fat as anything that's out there. Let me explain how this works because honestly it's pretty fascinating. What Vitamin D is, first and foremost is a fat soluble Vitamin. It's a fat soluble Vitamin that helps regulate mood, it can help regulate metabolism and most importantly it regulates where calcium goes in the body. But, because it's fat soluble it means that it's stored in the fat cell. Start thinking about this: if you have an excess amount of fat or if you're overweight that means that most of the Vitamin D that you consume, even if you're taking a supplement, is going to get sequestered into those fat cells and it's going to stay there meaning you have less bio actively available Vitamin D3 to do the cool things that I'm about to explain. Let's talk about how Vitamin D3 actually burns fat. The first method is by increasing something called Leptin. Have you ever eaten food before and gotten full? If you haven't you're probably not human. Honestly, what happens is leptin signals your brain that you're full. When you eat a lot of food you have the production of Leptin, signals your brain that you're full and you stop eating. Problem is that without Vitamin D3, Leptin levels don't generally increase that much. If you have enough D3 your brain can signal and your brain can be told you need to stop eating. It's that simple. Low levels of Vitamin D3 those Leptin levels don't get too high and you can keep eating, making it very easy to overeat. Remember what I said about the Vitamin D3 getting stored in fat cells? Think about this, if you already are low in D3 and then you eat and you don't have enough Leptin so you keep eating more then you're going to develop more fat cells, which means you're going to hold onto more Vitamin D in the fat cells and more and more to the point where you have this snowball effect where you continue to store fat. Are you one of those people that have just looked in the mirror and say how did this happen to me? Honestly, I was one of those people seven or eight years ago. The other way that Vitamin D3 is proving to potentially be a good belly fat burner is through the modulation of the parathyroid and calcitriol hormones. The Parathyroid is a small set of glands around the thyroid in our throat and basically when they produce parathyroid or they produce calcitriol, we have a rapid increase in how our body stores fat. It tends to want to store it more. If we have enough Vitamin D3 the parathyroid and calcitriol hormones aren't quite as crazy. They're not going quite as haywire, which means your body slowly stores and slowly metabolizes fat versus doing it rapidly, making it where you look in the mirror and feel like it happened overnight. Those are the two main reasons that Vitamin D3 is starting to play a big role in belly fat. This wouldn't be a traditional video of mine if I didn't at least reference one peer reviewed, double blind placebo study. One study took 218 women. These 218 women they gave a strict diet and exercise program to and they asked them to follow it for a year. Then they took half of these women and they gave them Vitamin D. The other half of the women they gave a placebo. After one year of time, it was found that the women that took the Vitamin D had on average seven pounds more weight loss than those that didn't take the Vitamin D. It doesn't sound like much but just by adding Vitamin D it's pretty dang interesting. Then, there's one other study. There is another study that found that those that were taking Vitamin D3 had a better waist to hip ration than those that were not. The warning signs of vitamin D deficiency that everyone should know. #Health #Vitamins #VitaminDDeficiency Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music Summary: Did you know that before the year 2000, most doctors believed that none of their patients could be vitamin D deficient? But as technology to measure for vitamin D became affordable, more studies were conducted. According to Dr. Michael Holick, who is one of the leading vitamin D researchers, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that 32% of adults and children in the US were vitamin D deficient. That’s a pretty high number; so for that reason alone, it’s important that you look for signs of vitamin D deficiency. With more research being conducted, Holick believes that about 50% of the general population may be at risk of vitamin D deficiency. The only way to know for sure if you are vitamin D deficient is by a blood test. But the signs and symptoms that come along with this deficiency could be helpful as well. There are certain people who are more at risk for developing a vitamin D deficiency. These people include the elderly, those who have milk allergies, those who have darker skin, or those who follow a vegan diet. Symptoms associated with vitamin D deficiency include an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, asthma in children, cognitive impairment in seniors, and more. It is extremely important to get a sufficient amount of vitamin D in order to avoid these health risks. If you are not exposed to the sun very often and have a strict diet which doesn't incorporate many foods which are rich in vitamin D, it may be time to start talking to your doctor about the best types of supplements you should be taking for vitamin D, and how many or how often you should be taking them. It should be noted that there are many different harmful effects of over exposure to the sun. Overexposure to the sun can result in sunburn, premature aging of the skin, skin cancer, and skin damage. Did you know that over 90 per cent of skin cancers are caused by sun exposure? This is why scientists are often debating about the best ways to get Vitamin D. Although vitamin D comes from the sun, being in the sun too long can pose all sorts of other dangerous health issues and risks which can lead to cancer. Over exposure to the sun allows damaging and harmful UV rays to reach the inner skin layers of a person's body. This causes sunburn, and can even kill or damage skin cells, possibly developing into cancer. Although a small amount of UV exposure is good for us (because it creates vitamin D), too much sun exposure can lead to early aging, skin cancer, a lowered immune system, and more. This is why doctors suggest eating a diet that has foods which are rich in Vitamin D. That being said, not many foods have vitamin D in them, which is why vitamin D supplements are becoming increasingly popular. Speak to your doctor today about the best ways you can increase your levels of vitamin D. Your doctor will likely suggest taking a vitamin D supplement. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe to Bestie : https://goo.gl/tUqro6 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bestieinc/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.bestie.com/

Read full transcript here: http://psychologyofeating.com/strange-things-that-make-us-gain-weight-lack-of-sun-video-with-marc-david/ Many people who are trying to lose weight focus on the two traditional factors that we think of as determining weight: the amount of calories we eat, and the amount of calories we burn. Of course, these are important things to consider, but they’re only part of the story when it comes to how and why the body stores energy as fat. Elements of our inner world, such as our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs, interact with elements of our environment to influence our metabolism in surprising ways. In this illuminating new video from IPEtv, Marc David, Founder of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, takes a look at a lesser-known piece of the weight puzzle: our relationship with the sun. In many modern societies, we’ve come to regard the sun with suspicion, limiting our exposure whenever possible - but compelling new scientific research suggests that if we hide in the shadows for too long, our body won’t be able to produce the nutrients it needs to burn calories efficiently. Tune in to learn why it’s time to give this old friend another chance! Want a sneak peek? Read part of the transcript below: Greetings, friends. I’m Marc David, founder of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating. Let’s talk about some strange things that can make us gain weight. And one of them is lack of vitamin D. So first, in the big picture, we live in a world where weight is a concern for lots of people. And few of us realize how complex a topic it is. We think weight is all about calories in, calories out. And that’s just one millionth of the story. So, more importantly, far too many people have been shamed by the world for what they way or how they look. So we’re going to approach this topic of weight from a perspective of not making anybody wrong for what they weigh, but from really looking at an honest and nonjudgmental perspective at the hidden complexities of the phenomenon of weight and the inability to lose it. And, indeed, there are strange things that cause us to gain weight. One of them that the research is telling us is lack of vitamin D. Now, you’ve got to realize when you hear lack of vitamin D, what I really want you to hear is lack of sun. So you may very well need more sun so you can be at your natural weight. That’s become the amount of vitamin D you get from your diet tends to be very minimal. So vitamin D production in food is infinitesimally small. We produce the majority of our vitamin D from exposure to the sun. Now, check it out. According to an Italian study at the University of Milan – I’ve been there – vitamin D deficiency is associated with a higher risk of obesity and obesity-related complications. Studies have suggested that above 40% to 75% of North American adults are indeed vitamin D deficient. Now, a new study published online in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that healthy or what we call replete levels of vitamin D may be associated with weight loss, particularly in a certain segment of postmenopausal overweight women. So really what we’re saying here is this: you’ve got to get sun. And even though we don’t have the exact mechanisms down, we don’t fully understand this connection between vitamin D and weight, what we do know is that once again, we’re learning that the sun is your best friend ever.

Dosing obese teens with vitamin D shows no benefits for their heart health or diabetes risk, and could have the unintended consequences of increasing cholesterol and fat-storing triglycerides. These are the latest findings in a series of Mayo Clinic studies in childhood obesity. Seema Kumar, M.D., a pediatric endocrinologist in the Mayo Clinic Children’s Center, has been studying the effects of vitamin D supplementation in children for 10 years, through four clinical trials and six published studies. To date, Dr. Kumar’s team has found limited benefit from vitamin D supplements in adolescents. The latest study, Effect of Vitamin D3 Treatment on Endothelial Function in Obese Adolescents, appears online in Pediatric Obesity. “After three months of having vitamin D boosted into the normal range with supplements, these teenagers showed no changes in body weight, body mass index, waistline, blood pressure or blood flow,” says Dr. Kumar. “We’re not saying the links between vitamin D deficiency and chronic diseases don’t exist for children—we just haven’t found any yet.”

Vitamin D deficiency can cause daytime fatigue or even make it harder to get out of bed in the mornings, even with quality sleep. 2. Vitamin D plays an important role in keeping our immune system strong and free from different bacteria and illness. As well, it has been found that taking vitamin D supplements may reduce the risk of certain respiratory tract infections. 3. Another possible symptom of vitamin D deficiency is bone and lower back pain. Vitamin D is an important vitamin for maintaining overall bone health. It supports bone health and helps with the body’s absorption of calcium. It has been found that those individuals with a vitamin D deficiency were more like to have back pain which often limited their daily activities. As well, they were also more likely to have bone pain through out their bodies, such as in their legs and joints. A deficiency in this vitamin will not only cause bone pain, but it can also cause bone loss since it not only helps with calcium absorption, but also bone metabolism. This can lead to lower bone mineral density. 4. Vitamin D deficiency may also negatively effect our mood. Feelings of depression may be a sign of vitamin D deficiency. This has often been linked to older adults. By being deficient in this vitamin, it may also cause seasonal depression during the colder months, when exposure to sunlight is limited. Depression and all mental health symptoms are complex and should be discussed with your medical practitioner to determine its exact cause and remedy. 5. Lastly, another sign and symptom of vitamin D deficiency may be hair loss. When hair loss is severe, this can be the result of nutrient deficiency. Hair loss may be a sign of vitamin D deficiency in female-patten hair loss. As well, there have been links found between low levels of vitamin D and alopecia areata, and low levels of this vitamin may be a risk factor for developing this autoimmune disease which can effect hair loss. Be sure to discuss any of the above signs and symptoms with your medical practitioner to determine their exact cause and also to discuss the correct amount of vitamin D you should be taking daily to support your health. http://homefirst.com/ Conclusions On the basis of a bi-directional genetic approach that limits confounding, our study suggests that a higher BMI leads to lower 25(OH)D, while any effects of lower 25(OH)D increasing BMI are likely to be small. Population level interventions to reduce BMI are expected to decrease the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency. What Do These Findings Mean? These findings suggest that a higher BMI leads to a lower vitamin D status whereas any effects of low vitamin D status on BMI are likely to be small. That is, these findings provide evidence for obesity as a causal factor in the development of vitamin D deficiency but not for vitamin D deficiency as a causal factor in the development of obesity. These findings suggest that population-level interventions to reduce obesity should lead to a reduction in the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and highlight the importance of monitoring and treating vitamin D deficiency as a means of alleviating the adverse influences of obesity on health. http://www.plosmedicine.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pmed.1001383

According to a recent small study, Vitamin D supplements showed no benefit for heart health or lowering the risk for diabetes in obese teenagers, and may increase cholesterol and triglycerides for them. Previous studies have linked vitamin D deficiency with obesity, as well as complications of obesity just as cardiovascular disease and insulin resistance, but the risks of developing toxicity from taking too much of the supplements are real. Dr. Seema Kumar, a pediatric endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic's Children's Center, said in a press release, "We're not saying the links between vitamin D deficiency and chronic diseases don't exist for children -- we just haven't found any yet." http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2015/08/17/Vitamin-D-may-be-harmful-for-obese-teenagers/3081439813446/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin which is essential for optimal health. This vitamin is mostly made in the skin by exposure to sunlight but some foods contain very little vitamin D naturally. Vitamin D is needed for the absorption and use of phosphorus and calcium from the small intestine and is also crucial for normal mineralization of bones. Moreover, this vitamin fights infections, including flu and colds, as it regulates the expression of genes that influence your immune system to attack and destroy viruses and harmful bacteria. Currently, it is estimated more than 1 billion people worldwide have low vitamin D levels. Vitamin D deficiency can result from many reasons, including - inadequate exposure to sunlight, too much sunscreen protection, certain prescription medications, pregnancy, dark skin pigmentation, and abnormal intestinal absorption. The most accurate way to measure how much vitamin D you have in your body is the 25-hydroxy vitamin D blood test. A level less than 12 ng/mL signifies vitamin D deficiency. A level of 20 nanograms/milliliter to 50 ng/mL is considered adequate for healthy people. Vitamin D deficiency doesn’t always cause symptoms, however, sometimes it does, and some of the symptoms may include: #1 Depression - studies have linked low levels of vitamin D with episodes of depression. This usually occurs particularly during the winter months because of the lack of sun during that time of year. #2 Obesity - the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is higher in persons with high subcutaneous adiposity and high visceral adiposity than in individuals with low subcutaneous and visceral adiposity. #3 Fatigue - this vitamin is necessary for the body to produce energy. Hence, if you are constantly tired, best to play it safe and get your vitamin D levels checked. #4 Headaches - according to a Finnish study, people with the lowest levels of vitamin D were more than twice as likely to have headaches at least once a week, compared to those with the highest levels. #5 Mood changes and irritability - the so-called happy hormone (serotonin) falls with a lack of sun exposure. Therefore, if you feel low or irritable, it could be a sign. #6 Restless sleep - the connection between restless sleep and vitamin D deficiency is not surprising since vitamin D is involved in the regulation of phosphorous and calcium as well as brain function and immune regulation. #7 Bone pain - low blood levels of vitamin D may be a contributing factor to bone pain and lower back pain. #8 A general unwell feeling - subtle aches and an overall feeling of being unwell may be a primary symptom of a vitamin D deficiency. #9 Sweating too much - excessive sweating due to overstimulation of sweat glands is described as an early symptom of vitamin D deficiency. The most common areas for this to occur is the neck and head. #10 Low immunity - one of the most common symptoms of deficiency in vitamin D is an increased risk of illness or infections because it has a significant role in the immune function. #11 High blood pressure - numerous studies have concluded that there is a link between vitamin D and high blood pressure. Important note - Most experts recommend getting about 15 minutes per day of direct sunlight without wearing sunscreen if you are fair to medium toned. More importantly, if you have dark skin, you will likely need more time in the sun to produce sufficient vitamin D since your skin has more protection against the sun’s effects. Cruciferous vegetables contain a compound which helps you use vitamin D better. This compound is called sulforaphane, and you’ll find it in cruciferous plants (including cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and broccoli) and spicy herbs. Thank you. Did you know that Vitamin-D isn’t actually a vitamin? It’s a steroid hormone that our bodies produce when we get enough sunshine. We can also get it from certain food sources or from supplements. Whatever it is, getting enough Vitamin-D is vital. Vitamin-D deficiency has been linked to heart disease, breast, colon and prostate-cancer, depression, weight-gain and more. While doctors can’t say for sure that a lack of Vitamin-D causes these conditions, it has been proven that people with higher levels of Vitamin-D have a lower risk of these diseases. In addition to lowering your risk of illness, Vitamin-D plays some very specific roles in the body such as: • Contributing to the formation and preservation of strong and healthy bones • Boosting the immune-system and fighting infection • Helping the muscles function • Helping circulation and heart health Certain categories of people are more at risk of developing Vitamin-D deficiency than others. If you fall into one or more of the following categories, you should get your Vitamin-D levels checked. You’re Over 50 – as we age, our skin doesn’t make as much Vitamin-D from the sun. Our kidneys also convert less Vitamin-D into the form our bodies need it in. You Have Dark Skin – because skin pigment acts as a natural sunscreen, the darker your skin, the more sun exposure you need. It’s estimated that African Americans need as much as 10-times the sun exposure of those with pale skin, to meet Vitamin D needs. You’re Overweight or Obese – Vitamin D is fat-soluble, meaning the more body fat you have, the more Vitamin-D you’ll need. You have Digestive Issues – if you suffer from digestive problems that affect your intestines ability to absorb Vitamin-D from your food, then you may be deficient. Type of Climate – naturally, if you live in a climate with little or no sun, then your body won’t be able to make all the Vitamin-D it needs from sunshine. Still worried you might be Vitamin-D deficient? Here are some signs you should be watching out for: 1.Depression or Anxiety Low levels of Vitamin-D have been linked with depression and anxiety. The bottom line is, if you’re struggling with low moods or cognitive problems, then it can be a sign you’re lacking in Vitamin D. 2.Achy, Weak or Broken Bones When it comes to bone health, the two most important nutrients are calcium and Vitamin D. If you’re constantly getting achy bones (known as osteomalacia), fractures or breaks, then a Vitamin D deficiency might be to blame. 3.Problems Sleeping If you can’t nod off despite following a perfect night time routine, filling your bedroom with plants to help you sleep and employing a whole host of natural sleep remedies, then it might be that you’re lacking in the sunshine vitamin. Low Vitamin D levels can seriously mess up your sleeping pattern and cause sleep disorders like insomnia, sleep apnea, REM related apnea, unexplained awakenings and inappropriate body movements during sleep. 4.Frequent Infections Since Vitamin D plays a vital role in a well-functioning immune system, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that frequent infections (cause by poor immunity) signal a lack of Vitamin D. German researchers have found that Vitamin D increases your immune function by up to 5 times, while boosting your ability to fight off infections and viruses. I am starting a High Dose Vitamin D Experiment. There are some medical professionals that have argued that the vast majority of people in the USA are severely vitamin D deficient. According to some medical researchers the optimal levels of vitamin are much higher than the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for vitamin D. There can be a danger in taking too much vitamin D, but more recent research has indicated that the problem is not too much vitamin D, but a lack of vitamin K2. A lack of vitamin D or low vitamin D levels have been linked to obesity and weight gain. Some people who have experimented with taking larger doses of vitamin D have reported to lose excess fat without dieting or exercise. Vitamin D has been known to metabolize fat and a lack of vitamin D can trigger fat storage, low energy or in other words 'hibernation syndrome'.

http://homefirst.com/ Obesity among teenagers is epidemic. It is a leading preventable cause of death worldwide, with increasing prevalence in adults and children, and authorities view it as one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century. For reasons no one actually knows, obesity was rare before the 20th century. What role does vitamin D play in the obese person's tendency to get diabetes? That is, would a randomized controlled trial show that vitamin D decreased insulin resistance or decreased insulin levels? Insulin resistance is bad, the higher it is, the higher the insulin and the more insulin is required to get glucose into cells. Belenchia AM, Tosh AK, Hillman LS, Peterson CA. Correcting vitamin D insufficiency improves insulin sensitivity in obese adolescents: a randomized controlled trial. Am J Clin Nutr. 2013 Feb 13.

It is a wrong conception that 'obese' individuals are 'healthy'. They may be harboring lot of nutritional deficiencies like iron, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and vitamin D deficiency. Check out more in the video. Also log onto www.lifeview.buzz for more videos.

Leveraging the knowledge of the foremost experts in the field, I can now release what I believe is a comprehensive explanation of the Vitamin D story. It's benefits are difficult to disentangle from those of healthy Sun Exposure though - the beneficial effects of D status may be hugely due to the sun exposure that got your D up! I use sun and UV sources to achieve my D levels as a result, not supplementation. Other key elements like K2, A, Mg etc are inextricably linked also, but here we focus mainly on D. Reverse Causality applies also - people who have inflammatory issues and are obese may drive down their D status, but data on this is sparse - but keep it in mind. Also important is that DAILY supplementation rather than big bolus dosing is used - the half-life of D3 is only a couple of days. This Seminar is of interest to Mothers & their Children particularly (e.g. see 15:00:00 to 21:00:00 segment), to avoid probability of serious chronic diseases, in childhood and beyond. The main message is that blood levels of D should be targeted towards healthy evolutionary levels, ideally through access to UVB / healthy sun exposure (NO burning). So to stress again: there is a lot of associational "correlation but possibly not causation" data in this, and there is every possibility that Sun exposure delivers more benefits than D3 supplements (by the production of many other photoproducts in the skin), and also the modern carb-inflamed/diseased population may be causal in driving down 25(OH)D status (e.g. the obese people with low D - is it their fat sequestering away the D, or is their inflammation driving down their status?) Anyway, thanks for watching! Ivor Cummins BE(Chem), CEng MIEI December 2014

However, for many people, the symptoms are subtle. Yet, even without symptoms, too little vitamin D can pose health risks. Low blood levels of the vitamin have been associated with the following: Increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease Cognitive impairment in older adults Severe asthma in children Cancer Research suggests that vitamin D could play a role in the prevention and treatment of a number of different conditions, including type1 and type 2 diabetes, hypertension, glucose intolerance, and multiple sclerosis. Vitamin D deficiency can occur for a number of reasons. You don't consume the recommended levels of the vitamin over time. This is likely if you follow a strict vegan diet, because most of the natural sources are animal-based, including fish and fish oils, egg yolks, cheese, fortified milk, and beef liver. Your exposure to sunlight is limited. Because the body makes vitamin D when your skin is exposed to sunlight, you may be at risk of deficiency if you are homebound, live in northern latitudes, wear long robes or head coverings for religious reasons, or have an occupation that prevents sun exposure. You have dark skin. The pigment melanin reduces the skin's ability to make vitamin D in response to sunlight exposure. Some studies show that older adults with darker skin are at high risk of vitamin D deficiency.Your kidneys cannot convert vitamin D to its active form. As people age, their kidneys are less able to convert vitamin D to its active form, thus increasing their risk of vitamin D deficiency. Your digestive tract cannot adequately absorb vitamin D. Certain medical problems, including Crohn's disease, cystic fibrosis, and celiac disease, can affect your intestine's ability to absorb vitamin D from the food you eat. You are obese. Vitamin D is extracted from the blood by fat cells, altering its release into the circulation. People with a body mass index of 30 or greater often have low blood levels of vitamin D. Treatment for vitamin D deficiency involves getting more vitamin D -- through diet and supplements. Although there is no consensus on vitamin D levels required for optimal health -- and it likely differs depending on age and health conditions -- a concentration of less than 20 nanograms per milliliter is generally considered inadequate, requiring treatment. Guidelines from the Institute of Medicine increased the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of vitamin D to 600 international units (IU) for everyone ages 1-70, and raised it to 800 IU for adults older than age 70 to optimize bone health. The safe upper limit was also raised to 4,000 IUs. If you don't spend much time in the sun or always are careful to cover your skin (sunscreen inhibits vitamin D production), you should speak to your doctor about taking a vitamin D supplement, particularly if you have risk factors for vitamin D deficiency.
