Blood Pressure Readings Explained What do the numbers mean? Everyone would like to have healthy blood pressure. But what exactly does that mean? When your doctor takes your blood pressure, it’s expressed as a measurement with two numbers, with one number on top (systolic) and one on the bottom (diastolic), like a fraction. For example, 120/80 mm Hg. The top number refers to the amount of pressure in your arteries during the contraction of your heart muscle. This is called systolic pressure. The bottom number refers to your blood pressure when your heart muscle is between beats. This is called diastolic pressure. Both numbers are important in determining the state of your heart health. Numbers greater than the ideal range indicate that your heart is working too hard to pump blood to the rest of your body. What’s a normal reading? For a normal reading, your blood pressure needs to show a top number (systolic pressure) that’s between 90 and less than 120 and a bottom number (diastolic pressure) that’s between 60 and less than 80. The American Heart Association (AHA) considers blood pressure to be within the normal range when both your systolic and diastolic numbers are in these ranges. Blood pressure readings are expressed in millimeters of mercury. This unit is abbreviated as mm Hg. A normal reading would be any blood pressure below 120/80 mm Hg and above 90/60 mm Hg in an adult. If you’re in the normal range, no medical intervention is needed. However, you should maintain a healthy lifestyle and healthy weight to help prevent hypertension from developing. Regular exercise and healthy eating can also help. You may need to be even more mindful of your lifestyle if hypertension runs in your family. Elevated blood pressure Numbers higher than 120/80 mm Hg are a red flag that you need to take on heart-healthy habits. When your systolic pressure is between 120 and 129 mm Hg and your diastolic pressure is less than 80 mm Hg, it means you have elevated blood pressure. Although these numbers aren’t technically considered high blood pressure, you’ve moved out of the normal range. Elevated blood pressure has a good chance of turning into actual high blood pressure, which puts you at an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. No medications are necessary for elevated blood pressure. But this is when you should adopt healthier lifestyle choices. A balanced diet and regular exercise can help lower your blood pressure to a healthy range and help prevent elevated blood pressure from developing into full-fledged hypertension. Hypertension: Stage 1 You’ll generally be diagnosed with high blood pressure if your systolic blood pressure reaches between 130 and 139 mm Hg, or if your diastolic blood pressure reaches between 80 and 89 mm Hg. This is considered stage 1 hypertension. However, the AHA notes that if you get only one reading this high, you may not truly have high blood pressure. What determines the diagnosis of hypertension at any stage is the average of your numbers over a period of time. Your doctor can help you measure and track your blood pressure to confirm whether it’s too high. You may need to start taking medications if your blood pressure doesn’t improve after one month of following a healthy lifestyle, especially if you’re already at high risk for heart disease. Those at lower risk may be followed up in three to six months after adopting more healthy habits. If you’re 65 years or older and otherwise healthy, your doctor will likely recommend treatment and lifestyle changes once your systolic blood pressure is greater than 130 mm Hg. The treatment for adults 65 and older who have significant health problems should be made on a case-by-case basis. Treating high blood pressure in older adults appears to decrease memory problems and dementia. Hypertension: Stage 2 Stage 2 high blood pressure indicates an even more serious condition. If your blood pressure reading shows a top number of 140 or more, or a bottom number of 90 or more, it’s considered stage 2 hypertension. At this stage, your doctor will recommend one or more medications for keeping your blood pressure under control. But you shouldn’t rely solely on medications to treat hypertension. Lifestyle habits are just as important in stage 2 as they are in the other stages. Some medications that can complement a healthy lifestyle include: ACE inhibitors to block substances that tighten blood vessels alpha-blockers used for relaxing arteries beta-blockers to decrease heart rate and block substances that tighten blood vessels calcium channel blockers to relax blood vessels and decrease the work of the heart diuretics to decrease the amount of fluid in your body, including your blood vessels.

The new guidelines lowered the blood pressure range of what is considered normal. An introductory video explaining how to manually measure blood pressure. In this video, we are sharing with you the auscultatory method of determining systolic and diastolic arterial pressures. The cuff is placed above the antecubital artery and the cuff is above the upper arm. The stethoscope is placed near the antecubital artery and no sound will be hear when there is enough pressure to close off the artery. When the pressure is slowly released, the sound of blood jetting through the vessel by the vibrations of the wall is called the Korotkoff sounds. The first sound is also the systolic pressure. The diastolic pressure is when a muffled quality occurs. Please note that the sound is often overestimated because sound can still be heard even after deflation of the cuff. This method is not 100% accurate but will give values within the 10% range. Transcript What is blood pressure? As the heart beats, it pumps blood through blood vessels to and from all areas of the body. As blood is traveling through the arteries, which are blood vessels where oxygen rich blood travels to organs and tissues, it pushes on the sides of the artery walls. Blood pressure is a reading of the force of how hard blood is pushing on the sides of the artery walls. High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is when this force is too high. Health care professionals will measure your blood pressure, while you are sitting at rest, with a device, usually a blood pressure cuff, which will produce 2 numbers. The 1st number is called systolic pressure, and it gauges blood pressure when the heart beats, while it is pumping blood. The 2nd number is called diastolic pressure, and it gauges blood pressure in between heart beats, when the heart is at rest. So, an example reading might be 117 over 79, with the 1st number being systolic pressure and the 2nd number being diastolic pressure. Normal blood pressure is defined as lower than 120 for systolic, and lower than 80 for diastolic. Your blood pressure will change throughout the day, being higher when you are active or under stress, and lower when you are resting. The chart on the screen lists the different stages of high blood pressure along with the systolic and diastolic readings for them . High blood pressure can cause severe damage to the body over time. It can cause artery damage and narrowing by damaging the cells of interior artery walls, which can lead to atherosclerosis or hardening of arteries. It can damage the heart, making it work harder to pump blood. High blood pressure can also lead to damage to the brain, kidneys and even the eyes, as well as bone loss and trouble sleeping. Some of the risk factors of having high blood pressure include age, heredity, being overweight, smoking, having high cholesterol levels, consistently being under stress, physical inactivity, and poor diet, including over consumption of foods with a high salt/sodium content. You can do some things to help control blood pressure. Improve your diet, which may include reducing salt and increasing potassium, get more active, maintain a healthy weight, find ways to manage stress, avoid tobacco products, and limit alcohol consumption.

However, those who suffer from stress, anxiety, high cholesterol, obesity and the like, they have increased risk of having a high blood pressure and in severe cases it can lead to heart attack or stroke. On the other end, some people suffer from low blood pressure due to certain diseases or conditions, this can lead to shock or even worse – death. Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension) Low blood pressure is alarming because it can be very life threatening if prompt medical attention is not rendered. The causes range from dehydration, blood loss and some surgical disorders. It is manageable as long as the origin of the condition is determined and properly treated. BOTTOM LINE: In the short run, low BP is worse because you can go into shock and die. Or simply pass out and if it’s while driving or something similar, could result in death or bad accident. However, this is more extreme and rare. High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) Blood pressure constantly changes throughout the day depending on the level of activity, physical and emotional status. If your blood pressure is elevated and stays elevated throughout the day and continues for a few days or weeks, then it’s something to be concerned about. Something interesting to note is that the older you get, the higher the blood pressure typically becomes and this is due to a variety of lifestyle reasons (poor diet, lack of exercise, being overweight, etc.). However, the primary cause/reason for higher blood pressure as you age, is due to the negative changes in your hormones. But don’t worry, there’s hope. BOTTOM LINE: High blood pressure is a problem when it’s consistent and ongoing because of the pressure it puts on your organs (heart, brain, kidneys, etc.) and the end result could be a heart attack or stroke. Blood pressure is measured both as the heart contracts, which is called systole, and as it relaxes, which is called diastole. Normal blood pressure is considered to be a systolic blood pressure of 115 millimeters of mercury a diastolic pressure of 70 millimeters of mercury (stated as "115 over 70"). If an individual were to have a consistent blood pressure reading of 140 over 90, he would be evaluated for having high blood pressure. If left untreated, high blood pressure can damage important organs, such as the brain and kidneys, as well as lead to a stroke. High blood pressure is a common disease in which blood flows through blood vessels (arteries) at higher than normal pressures. Measuring Blood Pressure Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood. However, once the activity stops, your blood pressure returns to your normal baseline range. Blood pressure normally rises with age and body size. Newborn babies often have very low blood pressure numbers that are considered normal for babies, while older teens have numbers similar to adults. Abnormal Blood Pressure Abnormal increases in blood pressure are defined as having blood pressures higher than 120/80 mmHg. The following table outlines and defines high blood pressure severity levels. The ranges in the table are blood pressure guides for adults who do not have any short-term serious illnesses. People with diabetes or chronic kidney disease should keep their blood pressure below 130/80 mmHg. Although blood pressure increases seen in prehypertension are less than those used to diagnose high blood pressure, prehypertension can progress to high blood pressure and should be taken seriously. Over time, consistently high blood pressure weakens and damages your blood vessels, which can lead to complications. Types of High Blood Pressure There are two main types of high blood pressure: primary and secondary high blood pressure. Primary High Blood Pressure Primary, or essential, high blood pressure is the most common type of high blood pressure. This type of high blood pressure tends to develop over years as a person ages. Secondary High Blood Pressure Secondary high blood pressure is caused by another medical condition or use of certain medicines. This type usually resolves after the cause is treated or removed. Blood pressure (BP) is the pressure exerted by circulating blood upon the walls of blood vessels. You can get a blood pressure reading with various blood pressure monitors. These include a wrist monitor, an ambulatory blood pressure monitor, or the good old fashioned kind complete with inflatable ball and mercury bubble. No matter which monitor you use, however, a normal blood pressure reading will always fall within a certain range. Normal Reading To understand what makes up a normal blood pressure reading, it's important to know what blood pressure is. The heart pumps blood through the four heart chambers and into major arteries that transport blood throughout the body via the circulatory system. Each time the heart muscle contracts, it creates pressure known as systolic blood pressure. This pressure is measured to produce the first numbers got through a blood pressure reading. When the heart muscle relaxes, between beats, is the moment that systolic blood pressure can be measured. For most healthy people, blood pressure falls within a certain range. Those who suffer from stress, high cholesterol or obesity often have increased heart rates that are known as high blood pressure. On the other end of the range, some people also suffer from low blood pressure, but this is almost always because of illness or blood loss. Extremely low blood pressure can cause shock and in the end, death. Blood Pressure Range A normal blood pressure reading almost always falls within the 120 to 130 beats per minute range. If someone is in excellent physical condition, the heart rate will beat at 120 or less beats per minute, systolic pressure. The diastolic pressure in a normal blood pressure reading will be between 80 -90 beats per minute. You may see a normal blood pressure reading written as 124/84, for example. An even better normal blood pressure reading is anything under 120 and less than 80, like 118/78, for example. This reading points to the normal blood pressure reading of a normal, active adult. Some adults have blood pressure readings that are a little higher than normal for the general population, but not for them. A high, though still normal blood pressure reading, may measure from 130-139 for systolic pressure to 85-89 for diastolic. Blood Pressure in Children Children will display different blood pressure readings. A normal blood pressure reading for young children, those between 3 and 5 for example, are around 116/76. A young teenager may show a normal blood pressure reading of around 136/86. Children between these ages can show a normal blood pressure reading of between 122 and 136 for systolic pressure and 78-90 diastolic pressures. Something to remember is that children have normal blood pressures in ranges that are lower than adults. But even so, a child is at as much risk of developing high blood pressure as an adult if lacking proper diet and exercise. High risk children also include those suffering from medical conditions or those taking medications that may raise blood pressure. Remember that no one's blood pressure is always the same. Sometimes, readings showing a high blood pressure may result from stress, illness or even anger. This weeks video is about high blood pressure and how you can prevent getting it with simple yet effective lifestyle changes. Healthcare professionals refer to high blood pressure as the silent killer and for a good reason! High blood pressure increases risks of many diseases and shortens your life significantly. WHAT IS HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and is given as two figures: Systolic pressure – The pressure when your heart pushes blood out. Diastolic pressure – The pressure when your heart rests between beats. As a general guide: High blood pressure is considered to be 140/90mmHg or higher (or an average of 135/85mmHg at home) Ideal blood pressure is considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg Low blood pressure is considered to be 90/60mmHg or lower. A blood pressure reading between 120/80mmHg and 140/90mmHg could mean you're at risk of developing high blood pressure if you don't take steps to keep your blood pressure under control. HOW TO PREVENT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: High blood pressure can often be prevented or reduced by eating healthily, maintaining a healthy weight, taking regular exercise, drinking alcohol in moderation and not smoking. SALT & DIET: Cut down on the amount of salt in your food and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. The NHS Eatwell Guide highlights the different types of food that make up our diet, and shows the proportions we should eat them in to have a well-balanced and healthy diet. Salt raises your blood pressure. The more salt you eat, the higher your blood pressure. Aim to eat less than 6g (0.2oz) of salt a day, which is about a teaspoonful. Eating a low-fat diet that includes lots of fibre – such as wholegrain rice, bread and pasta – and plenty of fruit and vegetables also helps lower blood pressure. Aim to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables every day. CUT DOWN CAFFEINE: Drinking more than four cups of coffee a day may increase your blood pressure. If you're a big fan of coffee, tea or other caffeine-rich drinks, such as cola and some energy drinks, consider cutting down. STOP SMOKING: Smoking doesn't directly cause high blood pressure, but it puts you at much higher risk of a heart attack and stroke. Smoking, like high blood pressure, will cause your arteries to narrow. If you smoke and have high blood pressure, your arteries will narrow much more quickly, and your risk of heart or lung disease in the future is dramatically increased. SLEEP: Long-term sleep deprivation is associated with a rise in blood pressure and an increased risk of hypertension. It's a good idea to try to get at least six hours of sleep a night if you can. High blood pressure also known as hypertension, is one of the most common problem a lot of people suffer from. Causes or risk factors of high BP could be age related that means the older you grow the risk of developing high BP is even more. Also, family history, unhealthy eating habits or eating a high fat diet, doing less physical activity, pregnancy, being obese or overweight, excess consumption of alcohol, stress and anxiety, diabetes are certain factors that contribute in developing hypertension. In this video we have tried compiling list of foods that may prove helpful in controlling high blood pressure. Including foods like dark green leafy vegetables, skimmed milk and its products, fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds and doing regular workout or practicing yoga will definitely help you control high BP. Blood pressure readings have two numbers, for example 120/90mmHg (is considered normal blood pressure). The first number is systolic blood pressure which is the highest pressure when your heart beats and pushes the blood round your body. The last one is your diastolic blood pressure which is the lowest pressure when your heart relaxes between beats. Readings over 120/80 mmHg and up to 139/89 mmHg are in the normal to high range. Your doctor will advise what your ideal blood pressure should be. Blood pressure over 140/90 mmHg is generally considered to be high. Include these foods shown in the video in your daily diet to maintain your blood pressure. These foods are rich in potassium magnesium and other minerals which help in maintain the level of sodium in the body. The more potassium you eat, the more sodium you lose through urine. If you have high blood pressure, it's best to eat a diet low in saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars.

How To Take A Blood Pressure Reading Most people have an idea of what a good blood pressure reading is. They know that 90/60 is low, and that 150/90 is high. A blood pressure range of 110-130 systolic and 65-75 diastolic generally is considered normal, although "normal" may vary from one individual to another. If you've been told by your doctor that your blood pressure isn't "normal," then it becomes very important to track your blood pressure often to make sure it stays in a healthy range. You can now take a blood pressure reading for free in many supermarkets and drug stores, but these readings will be of little value if they're not done properly. Home blood pressure monitors may require even more caution, depending on the quality of the monitor you've bought. No matter what kind of blood pressure monitor you choose, be sure to read the directions carefully. Additionally, it's generally recommended that you lie down or sit up so that your arm is roughly at the same level as your heart. You should fit the cuff around your arm approximately one inch above the elbow. The cuff should fit snugly, but not so tight that it cuts off circulation. But be sure it's not so loose that you get an inaccurate reading. Record the reading by writing down both the time and the date, along with which arm was used for the test. If you're using a manual blood pressure cuff--that is, one you have to inflate yourself--it will be critical to follow the manufacturer's directions. It's usually best to have someone else take the reading for you in this circumstance. Of course, you should also have a reading done by a medical professional as often as possible to make sure you're getting consistent results.

Use your thumbs, fingers, or knuckles to gradually apply pressure into the hollows of your skull. Close your eyes as you tilt your head back slowly. Take long, slow deep breaths as you hold for two to three minutes. Direct the pressure slowly and firmly into the center of your head. Other Acupressure Points Now, there are lots of other acupressure points -- on your feet, arms, legs, and so forth.
