Here, you'll enjoy an excellent workplace culture that fosters teamwork, promotes a healthy work/life balance and provides numerous opportunities for professional and personal growth for colleagues and physicians. Our dedicated professionals share a strong patient focus, as well as mutual respect and personal regard for each other. AI helps medical professionals interpret, perform ultrasounds – Bay Labs

01:35
Bay Labs, a small business funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), uses artificial intelligence to help medical professionals perform and interpret ultrasounds. Bay Labs is using deep learning technology to enable a wider range of medical professionals use ultrasound imaging to quickly and reliably detect serious medical conditions. Right now, Bay Labs is using their technology in cardiovascular imaging to diagnose potentially life-threatening heart conditions – something that now requires a highly trained expert. Ultimately, they’d like to see ultrasound technology used routinely for screening in clinics and for triage in emergency rooms. “Cardiovascular disease currently kills more than 700,000 people every year in the United States alone,” says Charles Cadieu, co-founder and CEO of Bay Labs. “We think that this technology can help improve early diagnosis and lead to more preventative treatment of this disease.” Bay Labs is supported by America’s Seed Fund powered by the NSF, a nearly $200 million per year program that awards research and development grants to small businesses and startups, transforming scientific discovery into products and services with commercial and societal impact. Problems can cause abnormal heart rhythms, called arrhythmias. There are many types of arrhythmia. During an arrhythmia, the heart can beat too fast, too slow, or it can stop beating. Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the heart develops an arrhythmia that causes it to stop beating. This is different than a heart attack, where the heart usually continues to beat but blood flow to the heart is blocked. A person who suffered from cardiac arrest will die within a few minutes without medical intervention. Patient outcomes depend on the time medical intervention has been initiated and on the skills of the first responder who provided initial cardiac arrest management. Moving on from the previous week's discussion on airway management skills, this week's tip of the week will be on cardiac skills or emergency management of cardiac issues. What Is CBD & Its Benefits? – The Ultimate Guide To Cannabidiol

01:37
Read more here: https://www.medixcbd.com/pages/what-is-cbd-benefits/ So, what is CBD? Short for Cannabidiol, CBD is one of over 100 compounds called cannabinoids that are found in cannabis plants. You might be thinking, “Isn’t that where marijuana comes from?” Yes, but unlike the mind-altering compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it will not get you high. Since CBD does not cause psychoactive effects, it is an excellent option for people seeking the benefits of cannabis products without the high or breaking federal law. CBD products containing less than 0.3% THC are derived from industrial hemp plants, which became federally legal for cultivation by state authorized institutions after the 2014 Farm Bill was signed. The updated 2018 Farm Bill will remove hemp from the DEA’s list of controlled substances which will also increase the exposure of potential medical CBD benefits. Industrial hemp is a derivative of the cannabis plant that contains large amounts of CBD and low amounts of THC. CBD can be extracted from industrial hemp to make legal hemp oil, which has been the center of many recent research studies for its promising hemp CBD benefits. Although CBD was discovered in the 1940s, research has been slow due to the legal status of cannabis over the last century. This past decade however, CBD has eliminated its negative stigma of being associated with marijuana, and many medical professionals have recommended it to help cope with various health conditions. CBD first received national recognition in 2013, when CNN featured a documentary about Charlotte Figi, a little girl with a severe case of Dravet syndrome. When Charlotte was five years old, she was experiencing nearly 300 seizures a week and no treatments seemed to help control her seizures. Absolutely devastated, her family desperately searched for an alternative to conventional treatments. Using cannabis to treat a child’s epilepsy was very controversial at the time, but when Charlotte began taking extracted CBD hemp oil, her seizures miraculously began to cease. The entire world took notice of this incident, and research began for the potential medical CBD benefits. Many studies have generated positive results, which has made the demand for the supplement skyrocket. Medical studies suggest that CBD benefits may occur if used as natural medicine for treating a multitude of other health conditions. CBD has also become vastly popular amongst medical marijuana patients that are bothered by the psychoactive effects of marijuana or do not wish to inhale smoke. How Does CBD Work? CBD works by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which was discovered by Raphael Mechoulam about thirty years ago. When Dr. David Allen, a retired cardiac surgeon and cannabinoid research scientist, commented on his thoughts about the discovery of the ECS, he said, “The discovery of the endocannabinoid system is the single most important medical, scientific discovery ever. More people will be saved by manipulation of the endocannabinoid system than are currently saved by surgery.” There is no denying that the ECS has been a remarkable discovery for humanity as it is the largest neurotransmitter system in the human body. The ECS contains receptors that regulate bodily functions such as mood, pain, memory, appetite, metabolism, bone development, sleep, and immune function. The receptors, which are categorized as CB1 and CB2, are activated by natural endocannabinoids produced by the human body as well as by plant cannabinoids. Although cannabidiol does minimal binding with these two cannabinoid receptors, it regulates several non-cannabinoid receptors and ion channels located in the ECS to evoke potential CBD benefits. CBD also acts through several receptor-independent pathways—for instance, by prolonging the reuptake of endogenous neurotransmitters and by either boosting or reducing the binding of some G-protein coupled receptors.

2018 Demystifying Medicine: The opioid epidemic: how, where, and what can be done?

01:49:03
2018 Demystifying Medicine: The opioid epidemic: how, where, and what can be done? Air date: Tuesday, April 17, 2018, 4:00:00 PM Category: Demystifying Medicine Runtime: 01:49:03 Description: Demystifying Medicine Overdose deaths from opioid use have nearly quadrupled since the year 2000, and opioids now kill more people each year in the United States than guns or car accidents. We know how the opioid crisis came to be; we know what opioids do to the brain. Now we must put our heads together to curb the epidemic fast. Two of the most prominent figures in the national opioid discussion — NIDA Director Nora Volkow, M.D., Ph.D., and NINDS Director Walter Koroshetz, M.D. — describe in detail the state of the opioid crisis and what NIH is doing about it. Come to the lecture to get plugged in to one of the most pressing public health emergencies of our times. Every day, more than 115 Americans die after overdosing on opioids, a four-fold increase since 2000, and the numbers continue to climb. Toward this effort, NIH has nearly doubled funding for research on pain and on opioid misuse and addiction from approximately $600 million in fiscal year 2016 to $1.1 billion in fiscal year 2018, made possible from a funding boost by Congress. The focus of NIH's efforts centers on ways to reduce the over prescription of opioids, accelerate development of effective non-opioid therapies for pain, and provide more flexible options for treating opioid addiction. This lecture describes the state of the crisis, the state of our efforts, and how you can be a part of the solution. The Demystifying Medicine Lecture Series is designed to help bridge the gap between advances in biology and their applications to major human diseases. The lectures include presentations of patients, pathology, diagnosis, and therapy in the context of major diseases and current research. All clinicians, trainees including fellows, medical students, Ph.D. students, and other healthcare and research professionals are welcome to attend. Become an Audiologist or SLP & Reward Yourself with a Career that Helps Others

13:04
www.asha.org/careers Audiologists and speech-language pathologists (SLP) discuss rewards of the professions and the joy they receive by helping people to communicate. Julie Martinez Verhoff | Director of Audiology at the River School; Washington DC Julie discusses being an audiologist at the River School. When having a conversation with a child who was born deaf, she's amazed and feels rewarded knowing that she's a part of that process. As a mentor, she trains doctorial audiology students. One student—Jennifer—was diagnosed with a hearing loss when she was five years old. Students love when they come into the clinic and see her and her hearing aid. They say, "You wear a hearing aid, so do I." Mackenzie Fama | Clinical SLP at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital Mackenzie discusses being on MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital's stroke team, as well as working with patient's on other teams, such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, or cardiac rehabilitation. She talks about her unpredictable schedule and the flexibility of being able to work with individuals on speech and language disorders, swallowing disorders, and cognitive impairments. She recommends the SLP field to anyone considering it, since it pulls from a variety of backgrounds and is so diverse. Whether someone's interest is working with kids or adults; in a school or hospital setting, or private practice; there's something for everyone. Charles Coward | SLP and Manager at Connections Therapy Center Charles enjoys working with younger populations most because they're going through different developmental stages, and he's able to make an impact that will last throughout their lives. He believes SLP is important because everyone has a right or need to communicate. In the future, Charles sees himself working in theatre or film, teaching actors ways to improve their articulation. Charles works with a young boy—Donovan—who has a bubbly personality, but is non-verbal. He works closely with Donovan to consistently use the sign for 'please' and teaches him the sign for 'apple.' Chizuko Tamaki | Audiologist at Professional Hearing Services; Falls Church, Virginia Being an audiologist is fun and rewarding for Chizuko. She works with one patient who came to her for a dizziness and balance evaluation. Doing a hearing test, then videonystagmography (VNG), she always tries to explain what's going to happen because it eases patients' tension and makes them feel more comfortable with what they're going through. Chizuko talks about her future in five years; possibly wanting to move her career in a different direction or to a more advanced level. With so many opportunities in audiology, she doesn't feel limited. Martine Ellie | Clinic Director at the Howard University Speech and Hearing Clinic Martine teaches graduate and undergraduate SLP students clinical practicum courses to teach them how to apply theory into working with actual clients. She decided to become a SLP because she always wanting to do something that would make a difference in peoples' lives. She talks about her day; either teaching classes, supervising students working with clients, and doing community outreach activities. She also talks about how ASHA is a vital part of everything she does in her professional life—certification, professional development, policy statements, and advocacy. James Brinton | SLP at the Katherine Thomas High School; Rockville, Maryland James discusses the most rewarding thing about being a SLP—working with adolescents and helping them learn to be successful. He works with high-schoolers with moderate to severe learning disabilities because it's important for them to have the skills to transition out of high school into adulthood. ASHA supports him by providing scholarly articles to read, and keeping him connected to other professionals in his field. With the experience he's gained he hopes to get a strong clinical foundation and either someday open up his own speech practice or return to a university to teach and supervise clinically. Davetrina Seles Gadson | Speech-Language Pathologist Davetrina became a SLP because she knew there was diversity in the field. She knew she'd have the opportunity to help people communicate. One thing she enjoys about her day is that it's not routine. From working with patients with voice disorders to neurological disabilities to swallowing; sometimes going on community outings or working with other therapists to make sure they're treating the entire patient; there's always something new. She's also had the opportunity to work as a travel SLP; living in Chicago and Dallas.
