Must Know: Why You Need to Stay Away From These Vitamins Multivitamin and mineral supplements became available in the 1940s, and Americans actively use them ever since. Nowadays, millions of people use supplements in order to strengthen their health and avoid nutrient deficiencies. Most people take a balanced combination of essential vitamins and minerals in the form of a multivitamin, such as Centrum vitamins. Multivitamins accounted for 40 percent of all supplement purchases, which is $5.7 billion out of the $37 billion in supplement sales in 2014 alone. Centrum vitamins, by Pfizer, are the best-selling multivitamins in the country. Their produces is the biggest pharmaceutical company worldwide, which deals mainly in manufactured chemicals. Yet, the company is also known due to the numerous legal battles, frauds, and controversy. It was recently threatened to be sued over false claims about Centrum vitamins in 2012 by the consumer watchdog group Center for Science in the Public Interest. Eventually, the company had to pull claims about breast and colon health. Moreover, it lacks regulation, specificity, and even standards. Namely, the multivitamins ask for no set standards or levels. Yet, it does what all big corporations regularly do: it pays large sums of money for advertising their chemically and synthetically enhanced supplements which can, in fact, do more harm than good. Apparently, even though these multivitamins are advertised to boost immunity and kick your metabolism they actually contain multiple additives which can be harmful or toxic to your body. Centrum vitamins contain at least 3 preservatives and several color additives, along with many toxic and even carcinogenic chemicals and additives. Here is a list of their dangerous ingredients: -Calcium Carbonate — This compound is found in rocks, shells, and even pearls. It is sometimes used to raise calcium levels in the body; but has been related to strokes and heart disease, especially in the elderly. Studies have also linked it to heart issues and myocardial infarction. -Polyethylene Glycol — It is often used in the manufacturing of coal-burning plants, rocket fuel, and over-the-counter laxatives. It might lead to kidney damage, hives and other allergic reactions, esophageal bleeding, tears, and autism. In children, it might cause encopresis, which is a continuous leakage of semi-formed feces. -Hydrogenated Oil — Hydrogenated oils quickly become toxic when processed under extreme heat, atmospheres of pressure and injections of metals. Their consumption clogs the arteries, leading to massive heart and arterial issues, and also results in producing cholesterol to bandage artery walls which have been affected. Even though it has been previously considered to be safe by the FDA, it has been recently found to cause lung cancer in rats. What is even more disturbing is that the Centrum vitamins for children are even more dangerous, as they include the following hazardous additives: -Cupric Oxide — This copper mineral is known to be dangerous in Europe. It causes kidney disease and childhood cirrhosis, and it is also dangerous to the environment. -Artificial Sweeteners (Aspartame) — As soon as it is ingested, this carcinogenic sweetener is converted to formaldehyde and methanol, and causes 40 adverse side effects, including birth defects, ADD, cancer, lupus, multiple sclerosis and more. -Zinc Oxide — In Europe, it is considered to be harmful, and leads to diarrhea, constipation, upset stomach and more. -Lactose (Milk Sugar) — Lactose makes up 2-8 % of the milk by weight. Specific enzymes in the stomach break it down, leading to lactose intolerance, and symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, cramping, upset stomach, and nausea. 12 Ways Your Body Tries To Tell You That Your Liver Is Being Damaged The liver is the largest solid organ in your body. It is located in the right upper quadrant of your abdomen and partly protected by the ribs. You need your liver for many important bodily functions and cannot live without your liver. For this reason, you should know the early signs of liver damage and take care of your liver as much as you possibly can. There are more than a hundred different kinds of diseases of the liver. Each has its own set of symptoms. Some of these diseases include alcoholic liver disease, hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and cirrhosis of the liver. The early signs of liver disease tend to be easily overlooked and are non-specific, related to any number of different conditions. Here are some common early signs. 1. Upset Stomach You are likely to get nausea and vomiting. They can mimic other diseases, such as migraines, food poisoning, vertigo, motion sickness, early pregnancy, depression and vomiting. It can mimic kidney problems as well. Those who suffer from early liver damage often feel persistently nauseous, because the liver has a decreased ability to rid the body of toxins. The nausea can also be due to ongoing metabolism and changes in digestion. If you have these symptoms for several days and don’t know why, seek the attention of your doctor. 2. Fatigue and Overall Weakness One of the early and obvious signs of liver damage is constantly feeling tired and weak. When the liver is not in great condition, the body must work harder and you will need more rest. This is due to an increase in toxins in the bloodstream that can’t be cleared out because the liver can’t get rid of the toxins properly. If the symptoms persist, especially with other early signs of liver damage, seek medical advice as soon as you can. 3. Lack of Appetite This happens due to a lack of production of bile that helps digest fat in the diet. When food isn’t properly digested, it can lead to a lack of appetite and a severe loss of weight. See your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms for a long period of time. 4. Digestion Problems The liver is important in digestion because it makes bile that helps the nutrients be better processed and absorbed by the small intestines. If the liver is failing, you can develop an increase in indigestion and diarrhea. If the bile is not produced properly, you can also experience irritable bowel syndrome, fatty food intolerance, alcohol intolerance, abdominal bloating, constipation and gallstones. If this becomes severe, you need to seek the medical attention of a doctor. 5. Alterations in the Color of Urine If you think you are drinking enough but still have a dark color of your urine, this may be one of the early signs of liver damage. The urine may look brown, amber, or orange in color because of elevated levels of bilirubin in the bloodstream. The bilirubin is elevated because the liver cannot get rid of the bilirubin and it is excreted through the kidneys. Dark urine may also be due to dehydration, side effects of taking antibiotics, taking B vitamin supplements, urinary tract infections, enzyme deficiencies or kidney abnormalities. The doctor can help sort out the cause of dark urine. 6. Changes in Stool Coloration Because the bile is not made enough by a malfunctioning liver, the color of the stool changes. Instead of being brown, it can become pale yellow, clay colored, or gray in appearance. This poses the risk for over-dosing. What’s more, many of these nutrients compete with one another. For example, taking calcium with zinc interferes with the absorption of zinc. Finally, studies are conflicting at best on whether a multi-vitamin can truly help or not. Save your money and get your daily vitamins and minerals from whole foods. 2. Hoodia Hoodia gordonii is a plant that is native to parts of South Africa, and it made waves over a decade ago as a weight loss supplement. The problem is that it was released with reported weight loss benefits and no real studies. Once studies began, the results were embarrassing at best. One study found that the group supplementing with Hoodi – over 200 people – experienced a variety of side effects. The most common were nausea and vomiting. The placebo group had no problems at all. Despite these results, you’ll still find Hoodia being widely sold and incorporated into weight loss supplements. Steer clear of this one. 3. Beef Protein Powder Let me get one thing clear: the protein you get from eating real beef is great. It’s bioavailable, supports muscle building, and helps with weight management. With that said, beef protein powder supplements are not made from real meat. Beef protein powder is the result of taking cow leftovers such as bones and tendons, boiling them, then drying the results into a flavored powder form. It’s a way to make a cheap product and sell it at a higher price tag than the more popular whey protein. Beef protein powder has a terrible rate of bioavailability. The creatine levels found in natural beef are nonexistent in this supplement. Just because you see “beef protein” on a label doesn’t mean a thing. Stick with whey protein for weight loss and muscle building. 4. HMB Beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate is a leucine metabolite that is often touted as an excellent way to support muscle mass. It promotes muscle building, fat loss, and a positive mood. Unfortunately, most of the testosterone boosters you find online and your local supplement stores are useless. There are two problems with t-boosters: First, many blends contain ingredients with no scientific evidence to back up the claims of their test-enhancing ability. Second, when a testosterone booster does contain an effective ingredient, it’s under-dosed to the point of being ineffective. If you want to improve your t-levels, focus on diet and exercise, not a supplement. 6. You might think drinking coffee in the morning is a great idea. You may even think it’s a great way to get yourself going in the morning. But you’d be surprised to learn that drinking coffee first thing in the morning- especially on an empty stomach- is a terrible idea. Why? Let’s take a look at a few reasons. 1. Stomach Acid Your stomach has hydrochloric acid, which, at the right level, helps your body digest food properly. When your stomach is empty, this acid doesn’t have much to work with, so it can slosh around and hurt your stomach. Drinking a cup of coffee on that empty stomach adds to the problem by putting more acid in your body. Always having too much stomach acid will harm your stomach and digestive tract, leading to problems like heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome, and stomach ulcers. 2. Bad Digestion Having caffeine on an empty stomach ruins digestion, leading to a bloated feeling and other signs of irritable bowel syndrome, like pain and irregularity. How? Caffeine acts like your adrenal glands, which create stress hormones called cortisol and adrenaline. When these hormones flood your body, they raise your heart rate and blood pressure, and your liver starts letting out blood sugar to give energy to muscles so that you can run away. Your digestive system also shuts down to send energy to where it is needed most. 3. Anxiety When you go through your morning on an empty stomach, you lower your brain’s power to properly break down serotonin. Serotonin is the “happy, calm hormone”. When your brain is unable to break down this hormone properly, it causes anxiety and depression. Throwing a cup of coffee on top of that empty stomach causes anxiety by boosting your body’s cortisol and adrenaline levels. That will leave you feeling shaky, nervous, and weak. 4. Dehydration Drinking coffee on empty stomach raises the amount of fluid that your body passes, and can cause dehydration. If you’re like most people, you’ll likely answer to that dehydration by reaching for yet another cup of coffee, making things even worse for yourself. 5. Low Levels of Serotonin Very few people know about this, but coffee will make you feel less hungry. People who drink coffee right away in the morning sometimes end up skipping breakfast. Skipping your first meal of the day can ruin your body’s power to make serotonin, a neurotransmitter in charge of making you feel happy and calm. Also, serotonin is very important for a good night’s sleep. Your body changes serotonin into melatonin at night. Low levels of melatonin usually lead to insomnia problems. If you like drinking coffee, make sure to always have it after breakfast. This effect of differentiation of Vitamin A also means deficiencies can affect the immune response. Vitamin A supplements for deficient patients can be an effective treatment for disease like Measles. Deficiencies can result from fat malabsorption or inadequate intake of foods high in vitamin A (Liver, fruits, & vegetables). Vitamin A is also a teratogen that can cause numerous problems for an unborn fetus. This makes sense as prenatal development is a period where cell differentiate needs to be highly orchestrated. Too much vitamin A could interrupt this delicate process due to its effects on cell differentiation. Vitamin A should not be used as a treatment for women who may be pregnant. Vitamin A toxicity can result in a wide array of non-specific symptoms like nausea, irritability, headaches, visual problems, and changes to skin or hair. Most other vitamin deficiencies or toxicities have a more specific classic presentation. Therefore, I usually just rule out the other answer choices and select Vitamin A toxicity if nothing else fits. Vitamin D [1,25-(OH)2D3] is synthesized in the body as a result of sun exposure or ingested as part of cow's milk (breast milk is actually low in vitamin D). The inactive precursor to Vitamin D undergoes enzymatic processing in the liver and the kidney to become 1,25-(OH)2D3. This active form of Vitamin D primarily increases the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the diet. Therefore, deficiencies of Vitamin D lead to decreased bone mineralization. Vitamin D deficiency in children leads to Rickets and in adults it leads to Osteomalacia. Vitamin K is responsible for the modification of numerous proteins required for coagulation. Therefore, deficiencies of Vitamin K lead to deficiencies of Coagulation Factors II, VII, IX & X as well as deficiencies in Protein C & S. This can lead to an increased PT, increased PTT, bruising (purpura, ecchymosis, perifollicular hemorrhages) and other problems related to clotting. Vitamin K is taken in through the diet & synthesized by normal gut flora. Both of these routes lead to an inactive form of Vitamin K that must be activated by liver Epoxide Reductase. Coumadin (AKA Warfarin) inhibits Epoxide Reductase to intentionally create a Vitamin K deficiency and inhibit clotting. Patients with liver failure may have difficulty activating their vitamin K also. Patients who are on wide spectrum antibiotics may have a deficiency if Vitamin K because antibiotics can kill off the normal gut flora which produce Vitamin K. Newborns also often have Vitamin K deficiency because they have not yet been colonized with the normal flora that create Vitamin K and breast milk is low in Vitamin K. This is referred to as Hemorrhagic disease of the Newborn and is why newborns are usually given a shot of Vitamin K soon after birth. Then you can come up with a strategy for getting enough vitamin D, which might include getting some daily sunshine and taking a supplement. Number 1 - avoid dieting. Pregnancy is definitely not a time to diet, but as women, we get really scared when we step on the scale and we see the numbers climb, but that's okay. You need to gain the appropriate amount of weight during pregnancy. And if you're unsure about what that is, talk with your doctor. It's going to be based on your pre-pregnancy weight. Be sure that you're eating enough calories, and avoid dieting, because it will make you skip out on essential nutrients and vitamins that your body and your growing baby need. Iron and protein are very important, and oftentimes, those are skipped out on if you're dieting. During the 1st trimester, you don't actually need to eat extra calories, but this is the time when you're sick and not feeling very well. Really, you're just going to go into survival mode and probably eat whatever you feel like you can eat. But once you're in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, you need to be sure to eat 200 to 300 extra calories a day. And make sure that they count. It's not a good excuse to eat an extra doughnut. Make sure that you're eating whole grains, lots of fruits, veggies, lean protein, low-fat dairy, and healthy fats. Number 2 - avoid foods that could be contaminated by bacteria, and also avoid alcohol. There is no safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy, whether it be in the beginning or the end. So if you're trying to conceive, skip alcohol altogether, because it can lead to birth defects and developmental problems for the child later in life. Be sure to cook all of your food thoroughly. So this includes meats, and eggs, maybe skip that cookie dough for now while you're pregnant. And also think twice about food. Sushi is something that a pregnant woman should skip, because even if it has cooked fish in it, it may have been prepared along side of fish that was raw, and it can have bacteria and parasites in it that could make you sick. Also avoid unpasteurized juices and unpasteurized milk, as well as products made from unpasteurized milk, like soft cheeses, brie, camembert, and Mexican cheeses. Number 3 - take a prenatal vitamin, and talk with your doctor to find out if you need other supplements, like iron, calcium, or vitamin D. A prenatal vitamin is important because it has folic acid and other vitamins and nutrients that you and your growing baby need to make sure you're as healthy as possible. You should actually take a prenatal vitamin before trying to conceive, during pregnancy, and while you're nursing. Number 4 - eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. Maybe shoot for 6 small meals over the course of the day. And this will help as your stomach gets bigger, you can't eat much, you feel like you get fuller faster, and it will also help with heartburn because your stomach is getting squished, and if you eat more frequently throughout the day, that will help. If that doesn't help alone, talk with your doctor about medications that can help with nausea and heartburn. Number 5 - treat yourself to something sweet on occasion. You don't need to give up all of your favorite treats during pregnancy. It's okay to have a cookie or a piece of cake every now and then, but be sure to eat it in moderation. And if you do crave something sweet, have some fruits available on hand, because they're packed with nutrients and they're going to be good for you and your baby. You risk permanent damage to your nervous system and brain if you let this one get too far though, so be on the lookout for those symptoms. Early Vitamin B12 Deficiency Symptoms: Unusual fatigue Faulty digestion No appetite Nausea Loss of menstruation Tingling hands and feet (start of serious deficiency) If you don't get levels back up from there, it can result in permanent nerve damage and get very serious, causing blindness or deafness. Also, homocysteine levels will be high (risk factor for heart disease, stroke and complications during pregnancy) long before any of the early vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms show up. If children don't get enough B12 during childhood, their levels can be corrected but the period where they didn't have enough can have permanent effects on their brain and nerve functions. Maintaining your own B12 levels while breastfeeding is crucial. You can be tested for B12 deficiency by your doctor, and the most accurate method of testing is a urine or blood test called a Methylmalonic Acid test (MMA). It can detect deficiency much earlier and much more accurately than the standard blood test most doctors use to test for serum cobalamin levels and pernicious anemia. If you're seeing vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms, or show low levels in a blood test, the obvious solution is to raise B12 levels. Depending on how low your levels are, go for any or all of the following: - supplements (my recommendations here: http://bit.ly/vit-B12) - fortified foods (nut/grain milks, cereals, certain nutritional yeasts) - B12 injections (done by a doctor, for severe deficiency or people who aren't absorbing B12 through digestion) Have you ever noticed any of these symptoms in yourself? Step number one is to ensure you’re not allergic to any form of shellfish, because blowing up like a puffer fish trying to impress your date by slurping down oysters is not going to go down well. Step number two, don’t just buy shellfish from anybody, trust your sources. Shellfish poisoning is terrible and happens when you eat shellfish contaminated with bacteria. This can include crabs, shrimp, oysters, clams and fish. 7-million Americans are allergic to shellfish. 9 - This Is Nuts Cashews, like our almonds we mentioned earlier, are also not healthier when they’re raw! Real raw cashews are crammed with a chemical called urushiol. Other foods which contain urushiol in small amounts are egg whites, mushrooms and potatoes. Just a few raw cashews can send you into an early grave. Rest assured, the raw cashews you purchase in the store have been treated thoroughly. Never try to grow your own cashews! 8 - Salt Attack Salami, ham, polony all have a rather bad reputation, and for very good reason. Deli meats are crammed with nitrates, sodium, preservatives, and additives which increase the risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and behavioural problems in children. If you need to buy cold meats try opting for lean, natural turkey and roast beef from your local butcher as opposed to the supermarket. 7 - Beans Feast We mentioned lima beans earlier on, which were dangerous enough, but nothing to lose sleep over. Kidney beans, on the other hand, are a different story. They are a key ingredient in chili, so you may think twice next time you’re enjoying yours. Kidney beans have very high levels of phytohemagglutinin, and if the beans are not boiled properly before eating, you could suffer with nausea, stomach ache and diarrhoea. People often make the mistake of cooking the beans in a slow-cooker, but the temperatures are too low to destroy the toxin, and this could make the beans even more toxic! 6 - Do Not Swallow The fruit of the apricot is just fine, but don’t eat them too quickly because ingesting a stone could be a huge problem. The pits contain amygdalin which breaks down into cyanide when absorbed in your system. 5 - Catch of The Day Tuna is consumed all around the world daily in large quantities, yet the risk of mercury poisoning is very real. Tuna is especially high in mercury which can have very serious side-effects. It can damage your major organs, cause high blood pressure, wreak havoc on your nervous system and more. Younger children are at a higher risk than adults and should not eat tuna every day. Mercury is not a natural element of tuna and is the direct result of our pollution in our oceans. 4 - A Bad Egg Pregnant women are advised to steer away from eggs unless they’re fully cooked – so no sunny-side up eggs at all. Even if you’re not pregnant, eating an undercooked egg can bring on salmonella. Ensure that when you prepare your eggs that the white is cooked all the way through. 3 - Spice It Up Nutmeg was once the cause of a couple collapsing and needing hospitalization in 1986. The couple had allegedly prepared pasta and added one-third of a 30-gram spice jar of nutmeg to the dish. How they managed to eat the dish still astounds me, but they poisoned themselves in the process. Ingesting over 4 teaspoons of nutmeg can bring on fevers, chills, blurred vision, paranoia and death. 2 - In the red Tomatoes are an excellent source of vitamins A and C but eating too many of them could bring on serious heartburn. They’re high in acid and anyone struggling with gastroesophageal reflux disease will really feel the effects. Their leaves and stems are also full of glycoalkaloid which can cause gastrointestinal irritation. Fortunately, the chances of you losing your life to this is minimal, but it’s just something to remember for the future. 1...
