DIY Mini Cactus Gardens for indoors or outdoors. Cactus and succulents are slow growing and great for adding a splash of greenery to small spaces, windowsills, coffee tables, on a desk or bookshelf. Light requirements can vary depending on the species you choose and the climate you live in, but most will thrive in bright indirect light, filtered sun or morning sun. Other species may require full sun. Cactus and succulents thrive in dry conditions, the fastest way to kill a cactus or any other succulent is by over-watering. So better to error on the dry side... When in doubt, skip watering. Going on a trip? Or forgetful when it comes to caring for plants? No worries... Cactus and succulents do just fine with neglect too. Converting your entire property into a lush, edible landscape can be fun and rewarding. Of course, there may be design challenges to overcome. In this video, I show you some plants that I've placed on my small suburban lot in order to feature verdant greenery, while also creating some seclusion and privacy. At least 90% of all plant species on my lot are edible or perhaps medicinal in some way. There are the usual berries and fruit trees, from Goumis to Persimmons. But also things that can be used as herbal medicine like St. John's Wort and Yarrow. New Jersey Tea, Chamomile and Sweet Woodruff can be used in teas. Some things love full sun. But some fruit bearing plants actually do well in shade, such as Jostaberries, Gooseberries and Currants. If you are serious about digging in, I encourage you to check out some of the books featured in this vid: Lee Reich: - Landscaping with Fruit: https://amzn.to/2lMCSqd - Grow Fruit Naturally: https://amzn.to/2NdBidi - The Pruning Book: https://amzn.to/2tLtuaB Michael Judd: - Edible Landscaping w/ Permaculture Twist: https://amzn.to/2KzBVzA For all of my book reviews: http://albopepper.com/reviews-gardening-books.php Edible landscaping just makes good sense. And as you've seen in this video, it certainly melds well with conventional gardening techniques too. On my property I have 3 sub-irrigated (self watering) beds that are used for my annual vegetable production. And there are some nice raised beds too! #EdibleLandscaping #GardenBookReviews #GrowYourOwn #UrbanGardening #AlGracian #Albopepper #FoodForest ================================== Support AlboPepper.com and get some cool garden shirts that I designed myself: https://shop.spreadshirt.com/albopepper/ ==================================

It’s good to live in your new environs for a while before springing into action, unless of course your new house is covered with blackberry brambles or some sort of rampant ivy. By doing this you can really see how the sun moves, if there’s anything funky going on & how you want to use your garden. I’ve changed my mind about a few things so I’m glad I didn’t dive right in! I needed to figure out what I wanted my garden to do and how I wanted to use it, & I got that nailed down pretty quickly. I want a place to play in (I consider working with plants playing & not working!), to dine & relax in, to further delight the abundance of wildlife around here & a little section to grow some food in. Tropical garden design • To get a perfect tropical garden, and if budget is no problem, consult a professional designer. • Nothing says ‘tropical’ like palm trees and bamboo! • The colour, size, shape and texture of a plant’s leaves is important. • Compost and mulch is essential and replicates what occurs naturally in a rainforest. You don’t need to travel to a tropical island in Asia or the South Pacific to escape the pressures of modern life — when you have a resort-style garden, every day is like a holiday. Let yourself go troppo in the garden! In tropical and subtropical regions of Australia, there’s a growing trend for gardens that resemble the lush surrounds of five-star resorts we dream of visiting. The hard yards Dirty work Gardening in tropical and subtropical areas requires a different approach to gardening in a temperate climate. Tropical gardeners rarely have to dig down to plant, instead they layer the soil with compost, leaf mould, garden clippings and mulch. Leaf mulch layering is a process that occurs naturally in forests and gullies, where soil fertility resides in just the top few inches. In the tropics, the best time to garden is early morning, before the heat and humidity build up. Take a stroll around the garden each morning, pruning as you go, and finish at the shredder. All shredded pruning material should be composted, then returned to the garden to maintain the natural cycle. Garden care Don’t expect a tropical garden to be maintenance-free. Anyone who gardens in a warm, high-rainfall climate knows that plants explode out of the ground during wet periods. They must be pruned into submission or they’ll take over. (The upside is that many rampant growers can easily be propagated from cuttings or grown from seed.) The need for constant housekeeping means a good pair of secateurs is essential — use them to regularly tidy up any brown foliage, dead palm fronds and spent flowers. Feed your garden with a mulch of organic manure each spring and spray all the foliage with a seaweed solution once every season to keep the plants robust and strong. In tropical gardens, it’s best to keep the lawn area small — time spent mowing and weeding the lawn is wasted time! Bright-leafed bromeliads will constantly surprise you with their hardiness and vigour. They flower only once but will continue to grow, sprouting new plants, or ‘pups’, from the side. When a pup reaches about 10cm, cut it away with a sharp knife, then replant it in pine bark, not soil. Alternatively, leave the plant to clump naturally. Bromeliads don’t have to be planted in the garden, they are just as happy attached to tree trunks or in pots. Most ornamental gingers die down in winter, and you should remove all the shaggy, dying foliage. When the weather warms up, feed them with aged manure as soon as the new foliage appears. Gingers need regular watering during their growing season. Planting list In addition to the plants mentioned, the following varieties will also help you achieve a resort-style look: 1. Hawaiian hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) 2. Vireya rhododendron (Vireya cultivars) 3. Crab’s claw (Heliconia angusta cultivars) 4. Fijian fire plant (Acalypha wilkesiana) 5. Giant elephant’s ears/giant taro (Alocasia macrorrhiza) 6. Elephant’s ears (Alocasia amazonica) 7. Prayer plant (Maranta leuconeura ‘Kerchoviana’) 8. Zebra plant (Calathea zebrina) 9. Abyssinian banana (Ensete ventricosum) 10. Crotons (Codiaeum variegatum) 11. Dancing ladies (Oncidium varicosum) 12. Canna lilies (Canna ‘Tropicanna’ and Canna ‘Tricolour’) 13. New Guinea impatiens (Impatiens) 14. Sago palm (Cycas revoluta) 15. Spiral ginger (Costus barbatus) 16. Crinum lily (Crinum pedunculatum) 17. Sacred Bali bamboo (Schizostachyum brachycladum) 18. Variegated shell ginger (Alpinia zerumbet ‘Variegata’) 19. Spindle palm (Hyophorbe verschaffeltii) 20. Majestic palm (Ravenea rivularis) 21. Medinilla (Medinilla magnifica)

Building the Man Cave. Update - This has now turned into a She Shed as my wife has acquired this and moved in. This is a video record of my Garden office / Shed project. Please find an update of what this looks like now. https://youtu.be/XXTP_teQAWE This is a video of the plans and budget https://youtu.be/gbUlZsM9klg I am not qualified or do this for a job, I just enjoy making things and this seemed like a good challenge. I started it in March 2015 and finally completed it 9 months later in December 2015. I build this in my spare time. I managed to get a great deal of the materials second hand or recycled. Other items I had to buy new, but shopped around on line for the best price. The timber base was from A1 Lofts who did a great job of our loft conversion a couple of years ago. I emailed them and they emailed out to all their contractors to see if they had any spare timber. I met with Dan from A1 lofts in Harlow and filled up a van load of timber. http://www.a1pms.co.uk/ The 4 x 2s were from a recycling timber yard in Peckham. The other items such as the windows and doors and the front maple cladding were second hand from ebay. I had to travel to collect items from all over Surrey, Kent, Hampshire and Buckinghamshire. Other items I had to buy new, but shopped around on line for the best price. I did all the work myself apart from the final fix and certification of the electrics. The electrician was Billy Keppel from Keps Electrical. I have written and recorded and played the instruments to the music on this video. GROW TONS OF LEMONS IN POTS... FOLLOW THESE CARE TIPS...:) You want to grow lemons but stop because you run out of space or you don’t grow it because you live in a colder region. If this is your plight then growing a lemon tree in a pot is a smart idea. Plant it on a patio, terrace or in indoors and you will be bestowed by its scented flowers and soft yellow citrus fruits. You can grow it in balcony too, Meyer lemon variety is perfect for kitchen and balcony gardens, especially for non-tropical zones Daizz's tips:- Choose a pot that is 25% bigger than the root ball of the plant. Clay pot is ideal because unlike plastic it is porous and evaporates water from sides, this helps the lemon tree to grow well as it dislikes being water logged. The quality and type of soil is an important factor too. For growing high yielding plants, use well draining organic potting mix. Requirements for Growing Lemon Tree in a Pot Repot your lemon tree in every couple of years or so in the beginning of spring (in tropics winter is the best season). Your pot size should be according to the scale of your tree. Avoid too large or small planters, keep in mind to use a container that is one size bigger than your previously used pot. *pH level of soil should be around 5.5 to 7 as the plant prefer slightly acidic soil to neutral soil. Sunlight All plants in the citrus family love full sun, around 7 to 8 hours of sunlight is essential. If growing indoors use grow light to provide adequate lighting inside. Watering The lemon tree requires consistent watering to produce healthy fruits. Giving it too much or too little water can lead to blossom and fruit drop and sometimes plant may die too. Check top 2-inch layer of soil for dryness before watering. On windy and hot days, it requires more frequent watering. Ixora is a tropical to semi-tropical evergreen shrub. The plant is often grown as an annual in temperate and cooler climates. Ixora shrubs are known for their large corymbs of bright florets. The large flower clusters come in red, orange, yellow and pink, and it’s also known as jungle flame and flame of the woods. Minimal maintenance is needed when growing an Ixora bush. SUNLIGHT/LOCATION:- Ixora is a sun-loving plant. While it tolerates some shade, bright sunlight brings out vibrant colors and more prolific blooming. However, in hot climates, the shrub benefits from light shade during the hottest part of the afternoon. DAIZZ'S TIPS:- WATERING:- Water Ixora as needed to keep the soil evenly moist, but not muddy. Although the plant prefers moist soil, it may rot in excessively soggy soil. Water the shrub sparingly during the winter months. FERTILIZER:- Feed Ixora in early spring, using an acidic fertilizer formulated for Ixora, azalea and gardenias, which has a ratio such as 4-8-8, along with minor elements that are beneficial. Repeat in midsummer and autumn. Acidic fertilizer is especially important if the foliage takes on a yellowish cast, indicating a magnesium deficiency caused by improper soil pH. Apply the fertilizer according to label specifications, then water deeply. MULCHING:- Spread at least 3 to 4 inches of organic mulch such as pine needles, compost, shredded leaves or bark chips, on the soil around the Ixora plant to conserve soil moisture and help maintain a proper acidic soil pH. In spring, remove the mulch along with the top crust of soil. Replace the removed mulch and soil with fresh mulch. PRUNING:- Prune Ixora after blooming slows in late autumn or anytime the shrub looks untidy. Prune each shoot down to just one bud or prune the shrub as needed to create the size and shape desired. Izora shrubs tolerate pruning well and can be trimmed back by several inches without harm. However, many gardeners prefer to leave the shrub unsheared for a more natural appearance. PESTS/DISEASE:- Protect Ixora from aphids and scales. Aphids are tiny, green insects that congregate at joints of the leaves and stems or the undersides of the leaves. Scales are hard-shelled insects that give the foliage a waxy appearance. Regular application of an insecticidal soap spray or neem oil usually helps to control both pests. Watch more Vegetable Gardening videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/177903-How-to-Plant-a-Vegetable-Garden Grow some of your own food by starting a vegetable garden. You'll eat better and save money. Step 1: Decide on a garden type Decide between a raised-bed garden or an in-ground one. Raised beds, which consist of purchased topsoil that sits within a wooden frame, are ideal if your soil is stony or sandy. The main advantage of an in-ground garden is that it needs less watering. Tip For an in-ground garden, test your soil to find out what nutrients it needs. Garden centers sell do-it-yourself kits, or you can arrange a test through the Cooperative Extension System, a national agricultural network. Find a nearby office on the USDA web site. Step 2: Pick a good spot Pick a spot that gets a lot of sun and isn't obscured by tree or hedge shade. Step 3: Prep the land Prepare the land by building your raised bed or clearing and tilling a patch of land to a depth of about one foot. A 10 foot by 10 foot parcel is a good size for a beginner. For an in-ground garden, install a wire mesh fence three to four feet high to help keep out critters. Tip Leave the top foot of the fence unsecured so that if an animal attempts to climb it, it won't support his weight and he won't be able to get over it. Step 4: Seeds versus seedlings Decide if you want to plant seeds directly in the soil; start growing seeds in small containers, like egg cartons, and then transplant them into your garden when they take root. Or, buy seedlings from a nursery that are ready to go into the ground. If you start with seeds, you'll wait longer to harvest your vegetables. Tip In colder climates, the shorter growing season makes some vegetables impossible to grow directly from seed. Step 5: Plan your veggies Plot out what you'd like to plant, taking into consideration what grows well in your area. Orient the rows east to west with the tallest plants on the north side so they won't shade the shorter ones. Step 6: Sow your seeds Start your seeds following the instructions on the package. Plant your seedlings when it's appropriate to do so, which depends on both the crop and your climate. Your local garden center or nearest Extension office can give you this information, or you can find it on the web. Tip Maximize output by planting a warm-season crop after harvesting a cool-season crop. Step 7: Try companion planting Plant compatible vegetables near each other. To find out which veggies grow better together and which are best kept far apart, type "companion planting" into a search engine. Step 8: Put in some flowers Plant a few flowers among your crops. They'll attract bees, which will help pollinate your plants. Did You Know? Guinness World Record holder Charles H. Wilber harvested 1,368 pounds of tomatoes from just four plants.

The Date in the video is wrong. This was shot May 6th, 2015 in Clinton, Iowa. Hope the frost is over or my plants are gonners! This is a short video explaining my self watering bucket systemI made this year. This is a small 8 bucket grow system I'm trying out right now with some heirloom tomatoes. This is great for me as I have no yard with full sun to grow vegetables in. These buckets allow me to do some urban gardening! I'm hoping to plant and pick..very low maintenance!

GROW MINT AT HOME VERY EASILY WITH FEW SIMPLE TIPS...:) Mint is easy to grow and hard to kill — which makes it one of the best plants for a beginning gardener! You can buy a plant at the store or grow your own from cuttings. Peppermint, spearmint, chocolate mint, pineapple mint… there are so many types of mint in the world! As a refreshing glass of cold tea, as a condiment in Middle Eastern and Thai dishes, in ice cream, mint is a worldwide favorite. It's especially known for its soothing effect on the stomach. Since mint is a very fast-growing plant, it's a good idea to keep it in a pot or some sort of container with boundaries so it doesn't take over your garden or yard. DAIZZ'S TIPS:- Method 1 Cut the stem just below a node (where a leaf grows) on the plant. Remove all but the top leaves. Stick a few cuttings into a small pot with moist soil. Keep out of direct sunlight for about a week to allow it to root and adjust to its new environment. As the mint grows, replant in a larger pot or in the ground. Method 2 Cut the mint stem just below a node (where a leaf grows) on the plant. Remove all but the top leaves. Stick a few cuttings into a glass jar with about one inch of water. Keep out of direct sunlight and change the water everyday. In approximately one week, roots will begin to grow. Replant the mint in a small pot with moist soil. Read More: http://www.GistOnThis.com David Latimer is one of the world's few proud owners of an entirely self-sustaining bottled garden. Looking at pictures of the lush green bottle, you'd think that growing it involved a lot of hard work. But the truth is that David hasn't even watered it in over 40 years. It's just been sitting under the hallway stairs in his home and it's doing extremely well on its own. The story of his this amazing experiment began in 1960, on Easter Sunday, when David decided that it would be fun to start a bottle garden. Since they were a bit of a craze back then, he wanted to see for himself what the fuss was all about. So out of idle curiosity, he got himself a 10-gallon globular bottle, poured some compost at the bottom and used a piece of wire to carefully lower a seedling in. Then he put in just about a quarter of a pint of water, and believe it or not, he only watered the plant once more in 1972. Never again after that. It has been alive and kicking for the past 54 years. The plant that David placed in the bottle is an indoor variety of perennial spiderworts that also go by the Latin name of Tradescantia. The bottle itself is tightly sealed; David only needs to rotate it around often so it grows evenly towards the light. "Otherwise, it's the definition of low-maintenance," he said. "I've never pruned it, it just seems to have grown to the limits of the bottle." So what makes the spiderwort so special that it can grow with almost no outside help? The secret is really pretty simple -- the plant has been extremely successful at creating its own mini ecosystem. Using the little water that David gave the plant 42 years ago, it has managed to get a water cycle going inside the bottle. The water is taken up by the roots, released into the air through transpiration, condenses down into the potting mixture and the cycle repeats itself. Through the glass, the leaves are able absorb as much light as they need to photosynthesize into energy that helps the plant grow. The oxygen created during photosynthesis also puts enough moisture in the air for it to 'rain' back down on the plant. As the leaves age, they drop to the bottom and rot, helping to create carbon dioxide (also needed for photosynthesis) and nutrients that are absorbed by the roots. At night, when there is no sunlight, the plant breaks down nutrients and uses cellular respiration to stay alive. The bottle has lived for 27 years in the same spot in David's retirement home in Cranleigh, Surrey. He took a photograph of it to a BBC radio show called 'Gardener's Question Time', to check with the experts if the plant was of any horticultural interest. And that's when it gained the media's attention. According to garden designer and television presenter Chris Beardshaw, "It's a great example of the way in which a plant is able to recycle, it's the perfect cycle of life." Beardshaw pointed out that this process was one of the reasons for NASA's interest in taking plants into space. "Plants operate as very good scrubbers, taking out pollutants in the air, so that a space station can effectively become self-sustaining. This is a great example of just how pioneering plants are and how they will persist given the opportunity," he said. But not everyone is enthusiastic about bottle gardens. Like organic gardener Bob Flowerdew, who said: "It's wonderful but not for me, thanks. I can't see the point. I can't smell it, I can't eat it." David has no choice but to agree with Bob. David did say that the bottle is incredibly dull and doesn't really do anything, but he's still excited to see just how long it will last. He hopes to pass it on to his future generations, and if they aren't interested, to the Royal Horticultural Society. David's bottle garden is essentially one of the best examples of nature's recycling process. And the wonderful part is that it should work with almost any plant, not just spiderworts. All you need to create your own is a large glass container with a wide neck and some good quality potting compost, deep enough for the plant to sink in its roots. Introduce very few tiny specimens of the plant of your choice, move them into position with kitchen tongs, water them ever-so-lightly, seal the jar, and place it in a well-lit spot. That's about it -- you've got yourself a beautiful bottle garden that will thrive for years to come.
