Recently, I have been seeing movies that are coming out in theaters that are not helping break the stigma around mental illness. Instead, it is sending the message that we should fear individuals suffering with mental illness. Rather than give that movie the time of day I decided to talk about 9 movies that accurately represent mental illness. A girl with schizophrenia confronts her hallucination. You can donate to NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) here: http://www.nami.org/template.cfm?section=Donate I've been researching schizophrenia since February 2012 (for an unrelated project) and have been endlessly intrigued and sympathetic to the mentally afflicted ever since. I cannot imagine what it is like to have a plight of the mind, and my heart goes out to those of you who are battling against what you cannot control. Although this short takes place in an entirely different point of view, I hope that it can create some kind of awareness towards mental illness. I admit, I used to hold my own notions that fed into the negative stigma against schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and others. But after spending this past year reading memoirs and articles, I can say that although I will never fully understand what it's like to live with a mental illness, I definitely do not hold prejudice against the people who have it any longer. Nor am I afraid of those individuals afflicted. All that's left is compassion, and a deep respect for those of you who are forced to fight every day. Good luck. #StrongerThanStigma - Please share to spread the word. For my civics class in school I was challenged to create a campaign for a civic cause I am passionate about. My cause was mental health in youth and the stigma that surrounds it. I believe that together we are stronger than the stigma that surrounds mental illnesses and that together we can end the unnecessary social hush that has silenced so many.

Top 10 disney princesses and main characters you didn't know had mental health issues Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg For copyright matters please contact us at: email@example.com Other Videos You Might Like 10 Popular Movies That LIED About History! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGVbHKuv7lE 10 Nerdy Actors Who Are HOT In Real Life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2DcVRpyA-A Description: Disney characters are some of the most admired figures in the world. As children, we looked to these characters to set the example of heroism and what kind of person you shouldn’t be. From villains to princesses, these iconic characters all helped shape our personalities and who we are, whether we are willing to admit it or not. The Walt Disney Corporation has had its share of controversy, and people will never stop analyzing characters from the company’s most iconic movies like “The Little Mermaid”, “The Lion King”, and even “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.” Parents around the world these days are now protesting these Disney characters saying that they set a bad example for children and are setting unrealistic standards of beauty and personality. But at the end of the day, these characters may be more like us than we ever imagined. Most people are now dealing with some sort of mental disorder, whether it occurred from a rough childhood or it was genetic and came from our biology. Just as we are all different and battling our own demons, Disney characters seem to be dealing with the same thing. Could this make Disney characters more relatable to us than ever? If you think about it, some of their ticks and habits could very well be explained when you explore into their mental stability and whether or not they are suffering from an illness. Check out the video and see if you might share a mental disorder with your favorite Disney character. In this episode of Hollywood Bites, we have picked a different topic i.e. movies that became a huge success commercially as well as critically. For actors, it's a cinematic gift, a chance to play a characteristic as well as a character. For directors, it's a chance to explore the psyche in visual and narrative detail. For audiences, it's a window into a world they will (hopefully) never experience. When combined in the just the right way, without histrionics or spectacle, the results can be incredible. Call them crazy or nuts, but the truth is, there's a great deal of universal human struggle in these individual stories. There's also a lot of motion picture artistry here from everyone involved. Research shows that as many as one in five Americans have a diagnosable mental illness. Many don’t seek treatment out of fear of rejection or discrimination, since the stigma surrounding mental illnesses is still intact and going strong. But the stigma is slowing being broken, as more and more sufferers come forward to talk about their illnesses. Many celebrities that previously struggled in silence have come forth. Coming from the mouth of the rich and famous, it seems people are more inclined to listen to the outspoken heroes of their favorite films and television shows. Can you make a movie while having mental illness? Bud Clayman is doing it. Will making a documentary about your mental illness change your life? Soon after college, mental illness interrupted Bud Clayman's dreams of a filmmaking career. Thirty years later, he's making the movie of his life. A story with universal relevance, OC87 is a wildly original film about pain and vulnerability, empowerment, and Bud's quest for belonging. Throughout his youth, Bud's future was filmmaking. After college in Philadelphia, he headed to Hollywood in search of a break. Instead, he had a breakdown. As mental illness struck, it stuck. When distress and isolation set in, the diagnoses followed. For eight years, Bud lived in a therapeutic community. Without waiting for his illness to vanish, Bud has reclaimed his quest as a filmmaker. As his camera chronicles the ups and downs of recovery, we also see the experience of what he calls "the fight inside my head." Behind the lens, a parallel journey unfolds as Bud the Director grapples with the challenges of making an incisive, highly personal documentary—a movie that he believes will transform his life. When problems hit the fan, Bud sometimes feels defeated. More often, he draws strength and skills from therapy, humor, and relationships. Even so, he feels different, and the stigma of mental illness is fierce. Meanwhile, directing this documentary film stretches Bud in ways that ultimately recast his quest. From the shadows of suffering, a portrait of imperfect courage emerges—a testament to acceptance, change, and hope. The LA Times hailed OC87 as "uniquely inspiring." The New York Times called it "moving, penetrating" and The New York Post said, "it's easy to cheer his ultimate triumph."

My friend who directed and filmed Bipolar HAS BIPOLAR DISORDER and this film is showing how she has experienced it. Everyone experiences mental illnesses differently. I see lots of comments saying i didn’t do any research before making this film, no one seems to understand this film was made with someone dealing with bipolar disorder. This film was made for a school project in grade 10 when we were 15 and it just so happened to have gotten into a film festival as well. It is the "psychological state of someone who is functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioural adjustment". From the perspective of positive psychology or holism, mental health may include an individual's ability to enjoy life, and create a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health includes "subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence, inter-generational dependence, and self-actualization of one's intellectual and emotional potential, among others." The WHO further states that the well-being of an individual is encompassed in the realization of their abilities, coping with normal stresses of life, productive work and contribution to their community. Cultural differences, subjective assessments, and competing professional theories all affect how "mental health" is defined... Mental health and mental illness According to the U.K. surgeon general (1999), mental health is the successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and providing the ability to adapt to change and cope with adversity. The term mental illness refers collectively to all diagnosable mental disorders—health conditions characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, or behavior associated with distress or impaired functioning. A person struggling with their mental health may experience this because of stress, loneliness, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, death of a loved one, suicidal thoughts, grief, addiction, ADHD, Cutting, Self-harm, Self-Injury, burning, various mood disorders, or other mental illnesses of varying degrees, as well as learning disabilities. Therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurse practitioners or physicians can help manage mental illness with treatments such as therapy, counseling, or medication. History In the mid-19th century, William Sweetser was the first to coin the term "mental hygiene", which can be seen as the precursor to contemporary approaches to work on promoting positive mental health. Isaac Ray, one of the founders and the fourth president of the American Psychiatric Association, further defined mental hygiene as "the art of preserving the mind against all incidents and influences calculated to deteriorate its qualities, impair its energies, or derange its movements." Diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 21 after a manic episode, Ross McKenzie managed his symptoms with lithium. After being on the psychotropic drug for half of his life, Ross sets off on a journey to treat his condition through alternative treatments and delve into the root cause of his mental breakdown. As Ross peels away the layers, his personal experiences tell a larger story about medication. The film, BIPOLARIZED, reveals how society is labeling more and more people with mental illnesses and how, in tandem, doctors are prescribing more and more toxic psychotropic drugs to treat these conditions. Many people put the blame for the spike in diagnoses on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the dictionary of mental disorders, which is currently in its fifth edition (DSM V). Questioning his bipolar label, Ross seeks out activists, psychiatrists and psychiatric survivors who have challenged the status quo in psychiatry, and recounts some of the alternative therapies he explores to maintain his mental, emotional and physical health.
