View more in our Early Math Idea Library: https://earlymath.erikson.edu/ideas This video from our Focus on the Lesson series, "Which Holds More?", demonstrates an activity for teaching capacity in kindergarten and preschool. Students look at two containers and try to determine which one would hold more liquid. View more at earlymath.erikson.edu One of the goals from this lesson is to get young students thinking about precise ways to describe their thinking. Many children use general terms—“it’s big!”— when explaining their ideas about measurement. This activity requires children to use more specific words and concepts to clearly explain their thoughts. While one container might be taller, the other might be wider. Because it reinforces strong, precise vocabulary, "Which Holds More?" is a great activity for teaching capacity to English Language Learners. “The language of capacity is difficult for any child but especially English Language Learners,” explains the teacher featured in Part 2 of this lesson. Students are able to practice using these new words, but the concrete objects in the lesson still allow them to fall back to using gesture to communicate their ideas. BIG IDEA: The purpose of collecting data is to answer questions when the answers are not immediately obvious. The most important thing young children can learn about data analysis is why we do it. When they understand that it might be the most effective way to answer a difficult question, they have the piece of information that makes data analysis something they might want to know more about. Knowing the purpose of data analysis motivates children to try it and to try to understand how it works.

Learn how to measure length with Kiducation UK's new series. Learning to measure things is a long and challenging process and there will be plenty more videos over the coming months to help children master all the different concepts involved. To make sure you don't miss out on any lessons, subscribe by clicking here: https://www.youtube.com/c/kiducationuk To read about the difficulties involved in learning to measure, along with the stages children go through and ideas for tasks that can be done at home or in the classroom, see my blog post at: http://kidsunderstandmaths.blogspot.com/2016/04/introduction-to-measuring-length.html In this first episode, we introduce the concept of comparing and measuring the lengths of objects using some of Douggie's favourite toys - Play Dough and Lego. Starting with units that the children can understand and engage with really helps them to understand the concept of measuring using different units and provides a natural transition into using standard units. There are a lot of stages that children go through when learning to measure length. We begin by using non-standard units of measure to engage Douggie in the process and help him to understand the important concepts and terminology. We develop his sense of relative length and highlight the importance of using a common unit for comparisons. Join in with Douggie as he starts the process of learning to measure length. We hope you enjoy watching our video and we will see you again soon for more learning...

We know we can always put twelve inches inside a foot. And one yard just won’t be complete if it does not contain three feet. One inch is what you’ve got if you’re looking at the top of a bottle a’ pop. On your thumb there’s about one inch from your knuckle to your fingertip. We are the women and men of measurement; if there’s a distance, we find the length of it. The length of the folder where your work is put measures out to just one foot. You’ll find a foot if you just look at the height of the parrot on my hook. A football field has one hundred marks; each one is a yard apart. At the plate with a softball bat, a yard is about what you’re looking at. We are the women and men of measurement; if there’s a distance, we find the length of it. View more in our Early Math Idea Library: https://earlymath.erikson.edu/ideas Preschool students look for objects around the classroom that are the same length as their hand. Why is this important? Children need many opportunities to explore the attribute of length and the idea of comparison. BIG IDEA: All measurement involves a “fair” comparison. When children have many opportunities to make and discuss comparisons, they become more competent with the procedural requirements of measurement. Making direct comparisons in the preschool classroom is critical preparation for later, more sophisticated indirect measurement activities and builds the conviction that to be accurate, measurement must be fair.

In planning my academic instruction, I used the information that I have obtained to rewrite my lesson plan so that every student gets the best outcome from the lesson. Because many of the students are visual and kinesthetic learners, I incorporated many visuals such as pictures, videos and realias and made sure that students are given many chances to do physical activities rather than listening to a lecture. Students were able to actively participate throughout the lesson. I used something concrete such as manipulatives to show them how to create a graph and then I had them create a picture graph to show them something that is representational and then I asked them to use a graph to answer questions using abstract questions. Because students in this class are more verbal and have some difficulties in writing to express their ideas, I assessed their learning by asking them to verbally explain their graph to me. I used the information I learned about students' linguistic background in my selected subject matter to form appropriate groupings and pairs. I made sure that when I separate students into groups to work together, there will always be expert learners in each group with an ELL or struggling student so that the expert learners can help the ELL or struggling student. I also used this information to make modifications in my lesson plans and in my lesson presentation to ensure that all students will be able to participate and be able to use what they have learned during the whole group activity and small group activity to do their work independently. I made sure to engage the class by activating their prior knowledge at the beginning of the lesson so that students such as ELL students will be able to know what I am talking about when I say certain vocabulary words during the lesson.

We make animated math videos and educational songs for kids that bring joy back into math class and make it cool again! Up until today, we have created nearly 30 animated music videos that cover mathematical concepts for 3rd Grade, 4th Grade, and 5th Grade; concepts like, Rounding Numbers, Ordering Decimals, Subtraction, 3D Shapes, Types of Angles and much more! We're curious to see how our teaching resource will be used now that we have shared them with a broader audience. Thanks for your interest. How did NUMBEROCK begin? When you look at the entertainment that’s being produced for kids in games and movies, it’s no wonder that kids are starting to zone out in school. During the last 7 years as an elementary public school teacher, I’ve always tried to find new ways to capture my students’ full attention, especially for that one subject that gets such a notoriously bad rap in elementary school – math. One day I brought my guitar in to school to play a song I’d written about Long Division that was accompanied by some simple animations I’d made. While not all my students liked the folk rock genre, I could tell I had everyone’s attention. Soon I began writing songs in genres that my students actually listened to: rap, rock, pop, country, you name it. Parents would tell me that their kids were singing the songs in the car, at dinner, even teaching them to their siblings. Almost in disbelief that kids were singing my math songs for fun outside of school, I felt encouraged and inspired to keep writing. Then, three years ago, I had one of those ‘AHA!’ moments: to write a song with a simple animation for every math concept I had to teach. Altogether, from 2008 to now, I’ve written songs for nearly 50 concepts, 30 of which are now professionally animated. Lesson materials to help maximize learning for those 30 songs are available at "Teachers Pay Teachers", a website where teachers, homeschoolers, and parents can buy high quality learning materials. I hope your student(s) will find a renewed passion for math as they access the NUMBEROCK method.

Imagine a cube with edges of three. Multiply three by three by three to see It can fit twenty-seven units ...gotta mention that they’re cubic! When finding volume, don’t forget to mention: The unit is a cube with three dimensions. To get a rectangular prism’s volume right: Length times width... times the height. Cubic units label three dimensions When we answer any volume questions. With the dimensions two, three, and six, first find the base: that’s length times width. The base is six cubes; then multiply the height: 36 cubic units fill it up just right! When finding volume, don’t forget to mention: The unit is a cube with three dimensions. A solid shape made of more than one prism Has a volume you can find with this wisdom: Think of each shape separately And find the volume of each individually. Then add the volumes nine and one: We get ten cubic units and this problem’s done!
