To make learning at home a bit easier Great Hope Preschool publishes videos to assist parents with learning ideas at home. Our goal is to provide hands on strategies to help close the learning gap from school to home. According to recent research from Vanderbilt University, children are capable of working with patterns in much more complicated ways than we usually ask of them. And these more sophisticated uses of patterns are what can really get your child primed for learning! So give your kid’s pattern prowess a boost by trying out some of these fun ways to play, talk and learn with patterns. They start out simple, and then get increasingly complex. But don’t worry – your kids can totally handle it! For more information on patterns how patterns boost your child's math skills visit: http://www.pbs.org/parents/expert-tips-advice/2015/09/patterns-boosts-childs-math-skills/ In this video the children will use dog bone treats to create a pattern. They will also order, compare, and describe dog bone treats according to size. Practice: Patterns http://r.gynzy.com/7bf9c5e2 Here is a new lesson plan that I've been working on to help students recognize and create patterns. It includes six "quizzes" ranging from easy to challenging: 1) What compes next? (Pattern of 2) 2) What is missing? (Pattern of 2) 3) What compes next? (Pattern of 3) 4) What is missing? (Pattern of 3) 5) What compes next? (Pattern of 4) 6) What is missing? (Pattern of 4) Afterwards there are a couple of activities where students can create their own patterns. It also includes two printable worksheets. I've tried to capture the features in this video. I hope it is clear. I love to hear what you think of this lesson. If you have any comment or suggestions, please leave a reply.

Learning with Lego is one of the educational resources that parents homeschooling their children could use in different lessons especially when it is all related to math. In this video the lesson is all about creating different patterns with the Lego blocks just for the whole understanding of patterns and sequences. In order to play these games with your child, all what is needed is the clean Lego board on which the kids will create their patterns and sequences and the different Lego blocks on which they will depend on, and that's it for them to succeed at playing this game and creating the different patterns and sequences. We believe that all the homes have Lego blocks in them because they are not just good resources for the kids to play and have some fun, but they are also good resources to depend on when it comes to teaching them a new lesson that Lego could manage to deliver. The first part of this lesson is asking the child to create a color pattern and in this case, they will get the freedom to do whatever they want with two colors for example but make sure that they are creating a pattern and not just a random thing out there. Moving forward with this game could happen through letting the kids understand what a pattern is and at the same time increase the number of colors which they are allowed to use to bring a final shape or pattern. Start with asking them to create a pattern with two colors then move forward and let them create a pattern with three colors, etc. and see what they could actually do. There are different other things and games to try with the kids in order to let them learn the whole idea behind patterns and sequences. The games related to creating these patterns and sequences for kids are numerous, some could be related to asking the kid to create a pattern with using specific colors or else specific numbers, or on the other hand, it could be about sharing it all with the kids and starting the pattern then ask the child to complete it. This is one of the games that people could use Lego in order to play, but there are those games related to math that could be always taught to the kids through playing with Lego, kids could learn counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with the Lego blocks and putting them over one another (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roMEZv1OObc). Even though the lessons that could be taught to the kids through using Lego blocks are the same, the methods that could be used are different and the techniques are never ending, it will all depend on the creativity of the parents, some might come up with good ideas that the kids will consider a challenge, while others might feel empty and thus will need someone to help them with the ideas. In addition to the numbers and teaching the kids the different mathematical operations, Lego could be also a good resource for the kids to use in order to learn the English alphabet letters and know how they are supposed to write them down through making the letter shapes with the Lego blocks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmmNwX1bPH4). We all believe that Lego is definitely one of the most successful educational resources that parents could use and depend on while they are homeschooling their children, but in addition to the Lego, there are also other tools that could be depended on, such as play-doh for example which the kids could use to form different shapes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw91epryD28). What do you think, is Lego more effective at teaching kids math and English, or are there any other effective methods used? Do you usually depend on it to teach your kids math and English or else you prefer other methods with your kids? Let us know how you manage to teach your kids at home and what the different methods that you use are. This is one video to help parents get an idea about Lego games for kids that could teach them to create patterns and sequences and understand what these actually mean or what they are. Enjoy watching this video about Lego games and let us hear back from you and know your feedback about how effective it was with your kids. This is a video of our first visit to a Maths Class, during our second year documenting the Project Maths rollout in a Junior Cycle classroom in a Donegal school. This lesson involved learning about patterns. The students got on well with creating their own patterns with numbers. From there they went on to open up the packets with cubes. The first pattern consisted of just red and black and the students tried to find connections in the patterns. The class was put into groups. In the groups there were 3 jobs, one person was in charge of putting the cubes together, one person drew on their whiteboards and the third person answered questions. The groups then rotated the jobs. The students preferred working in groups as they felt that they could discuss their ideas with other students. The students also liked the fact that they could get help off their peers if they needed it. Usually the class worked in groups of two, however for this class they worked in groups of three. The teacher felt that they found this more difficult, they weren't as communicative with each other as usual. The teacher also felt that the groups could have been put together better, so this is something he will look at in the future. The students felt that Project Maths was better than the way they would have done maths previously as it was a lot more practical, instead of "just writing all the time". The teacher felt that Project Maths was a great help to students who are perhaps weaker at taking notes and doing questions. He also felt that they benefit from Project Maths as they're actually working the answers out for themselves. The students themselves felt that it was easier to remember maths now as they're actually thinking about for themselves instead of just writing it down. The students found it quite difficult to find out what the 100th and the 500th colour would be on the blocks. The teacher reported that he tries to do as much independent work as possible. While he acknowledged this takes longer he also felt it had benefits in the long run as this type of work has shown positive results. The teacher felt that Project Maths made it a lot easier for him to assess the students' learning as it's more obvious with the group work what students were not getting on as well as others. With the previous way of teaching (from the top of the classroom) it was more difficult to assess what students understood. In addition the teacher felt that Project Maths was very beneficial to students who might ordinarily struggle with maths as they're able to use real life information and bring it into the maths classroom whereas beforehand, they might not have been able to make the link. Keep checking the Project Maths website for more information and updates: www.projectmaths.ie
