Olympic Maths
Year 4 children go out into the play ground to try out Olympic Maths They measure and record long jumps, high jumps and target practice using a beanbag. They then turn their data into Venn diagrams and graphs for analysis to find their Olympic Maths Champions. At the same time they use digital cameras to record their efforts both in stills and in video footage. These can then be reviewed on the whiteboard. You can use this video in three ways. If you like it and it fits your pupils then why not try the actual lesson: there is a lesson plan and other materials below. You could adapt it for your subject and age group or you might find it jogs you into trying something entirely different. Learn how to master number bonds to 5 and 10 with this fun and creative video! For more quality educational videos for young kids, see our website: www.kiducation.co.uk At Kiducation, we make learning fun! https://youtu.be/2oKG0sCTzCY This video contains ideas for a complete lesson, either for in the classroom or at home. It introduces the idea of number bonds in an informal, investigative way, using just 5 objects. This helps develop a true understanding of number bonds and what they're all about. Then the lesson then moves on to discovering the number bonds to 10 with a fun and imaginative task. The lesson highlights the commutative nature of addition (where order doesn't matter: 7+3 = 3+7) - an important concept for kids to learn to help with algebra and other mathematical topics in the future. At the end of the task, your child should have two colourful pieces of work to proudly display on the fridge at home and remind them of their success. 0:00 introduction to number bonds 2:44 Formalising number bonds to 5 5:54 Discussion of commutative nature of addition 7:05 Number bonds to 10 11:58 Display of material and Douggie's own version of the 10 green bottles song Come and learn with Kiducation - making learning fun. Kiducation UK is designed to help young kids do that extra bit of learning at home. The videos are interactive and fun and star two young children with the help of a qualified Maths teacher. The learning is led by the children, so is suitably paced, entertaining and includes misconceptions along the way. Fractions Song For Kids | 2nd Grade - 3rd Grade
🍎 Hello Teachers! Hello Kids! Enjoy our growing library of math videos at https://www.numberock.com 🍎 Accompanying Lesson Plan and Materials For the Fractions Song Below: VIDEO'S LESSON PLAN: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Basic-Fractions-Bundle-for-Kids-Introduces-Fractions-On-a-Number-Line-2174394 NUMBEROCK DIGITAL LIBRARY: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Math-Worksheets-More-NUMBEROCK-Musical-Math-Workbook-and-Activities-2200780 »»-------------¤-------------««»»-------------¤-------------«« You're student(s) are going to love learning about fractions as we eat pies, see birds in the skies, and even win an Olympic prize! Three new NUMBEROCK characters come to life in this informative and easy to understand introduction to fractions. The numerator and denominator are shown in 3 real-world examples before introducing to students the idea of fractions on a number line, all the while reinforcing that fractions are equal parts of a whole. This Fractions for Kids Songn is Ideal for 2nd-3rd Grade. LYRICS: There were five pieces in one whole pie; the denominator of the whole pie was five. The numerator of my part was three, as three fifths of the pie was for me. My mom made the apple pie out of Granny Smiths. She asked me if I liked it. I said, "I plead the fifth..." The numerator's the part, the denominator's the whole, and fractions are parts of a whole. Three birds were on a telephone pole. The denominator, three, was the group as a whole. The numerator, two, out of the thirds, described the two thirds that were blue birds. The numerator, two, described how many were blue. Then something fell on my head... it was bird poo! I took four shots on the goal; three went in, but one hit the pole. The denominator was all four shots. The numerator was the three goals I'd got. The other team's record had taken a toll; I'd got three fourths of my shots and won Olympic Gold. A number line has every fraction between zero and one. Right in the middle is one half; one fourth is half of that. A fraction's parts, you realize, have to be the same size. Hey, we're late for the game! Hate to leave you, guys!

MATH & GEOMETRY Vocabulary and Terminology in English
Do you need to speak about or understand mathematics or geometry in English? This lesson teaches you all the terminology you need to translate your mathematics knowledge into English. This video will be especially important for students who are studying in an English-speaking country, and for professionals who need to work with English speakers. I'll also explain the correct sentence structures we use to talk about common mathematical operations in English. For example: "One plus one equals two", "one and one is two", "if you add one and one, you get two", and many more. This lesson covers terminology about: operations (+ - * /), fractions, decimals, exponents, roots, shapes, measurements, angles, triangles, and much more. Don't let English stand in the way of your mathematics! TAKE THE QUIZ: https://www.engvid.com/math-geometry-vocabulary-english/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. Welcome to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. In today's video I'm going to look at some math. Now, I know this is an English site, don't worry, I'm not actually going to do any math. Philosophy and English major, so math not my favourite, but I will give you some math terminology, words that you need if you're going to do math. Now, a lot of you might be engineers or you might be students who came from another country to an English-speaking country, and you go to math class and you know the math, but you're not sure of the wording. Okay? So this is what we're looking at, terminology, only the words that you need to go into a math class or to do some math on your own. Okay? We're going to start with the very basics. You know all these functions already. I'm just going to give you some ways to talk about them, and then we'll move on to some other functions and other parts. So, you know the four basic functions: "addition", "subtraction", "multiplication", and "division". What you need to know is ways to say an equation. Right? You know an equation. "1 + 1 = 2", that's an equation. "x2 + y3 = znth", that's also an equation which I'm not even going to get into. So, let's start with addition. The way to talk about addition. You can say: "1 plus 1", "plus", of course is "+" symbol, that's the plus symbol. "1 plus 1 equals 2." 2 means the total, is also called the "sum". Now, you can also say: "The sum of 1 and 1 is 2." You can also just say, without this part: "1 and 1 is 2." So you don't need the plus, you don't need the equal; you can use "and" and "is", but it means the same thing. Everybody will understand you're making... You're doing addition. Sorry. Doing addition, not making. If you add 1 and 1, you get 2. Okay? So: "add" and "get", other words you can use to express the equation. Now, if you're doing math problems, math problems are word problems. I know a lot of you have a hard time understanding the question because of the words, so different ways to look at these functions using different words, different verbs especially. If we look at subtraction: "10 minus 5 equals 5". "5", the answer is also called the "difference". For addition it's the "sum", for subtraction it's "difference". "10, subtract 5 gives you 5." Or: "10 deduct"-means take away-"5", we can also say: "Take 5 away"... Oh, I forgot a word here. Sorry. "Take 5 away from 10, you get", okay? "10 subtract 5", you can say: "gives you 5", sorry, I had to think about that. Math, not my specialty. So: "Take 5 away from 5, you get 5", "Take 5 away from 5, you're left with", "left with" means what remains. Okay, so again, different ways to say the exact same thing. So if you see different math problems in different language you can understand what they're saying. Okay? Multiplication. "5 times 5", that's: "5 times 5 equals 25". "25" is the "product", the answer to the multiplication, the product. "5 multiplied by 5", don't forget the "by". "5 multiplied by 5 is 25", "is", "gives you", "gets", etc. Then we go to division. "9 divided by 3 equals 3", "3", the answer is called the "quotient". This is a "q". I don't have a very pretty "q", but it's a "q". "Quotient". Okay? "3 goes into... 3 goes into 9 three times", so you can reverse the order of the equation. Here, when... In addition, subtraction, multiplication... Well, actually addition and multiplication you can reverse the order and it says the same thing. Here you have to reverse the order: "goes into" as opposed to "divided by", so pay attention to the prepositions as well. Gives you... Sorry. "3 goes into 9 three times", there's your answer. "10 divided by 4", now, sometimes you get an uneven number. So: "10 divided by 4" gives you 2 with a remainder of 2, so: "2 remainder 2". Sometimes it'll be "2R2", you might see it like that. Okay? So these are the basic functions you have to look at. Now we're going to get into a little bit more complicated math things. We're going to look at fractions, exponents, we're going to look at some geometry issues, things like that.

7 Riddles That Will Test Your Brain Power
These 7 puzzles will trick your brain. 😉 Take this fun test to check the sharpness and productivity of your brain. Try to answer these questions as quickly as possible and see the results! 👍 Our brain is a mysterious thing. We know more about stars than about the things inside our heads! But what we do know about the brain is that it gets less sharp and productive with age. You have a maximum of 20 seconds for each task, but try to answer the questions as fast as possible. TIMESTAMPS What is the mistake two photos have in common? 0:45 How many holes does the T-shirt have? 1:53 How would you name this tree? 2:40 Can you solve this riddle one in 5 seconds? 3:21 Do you see a hidden baby? 4:26 Which line is longer? 5:12 Can you spot Mike Wazowski? 6:30 #riddles #hardtest #brainteasers SUMMARY If it took you more than 20 seconds to answer each question, or you didn't manage all the tasks, it means that you have the brain of a mature person. It 's hard for you to make your mind see beyond the obvious and you can't handle change easily. If took you less than 20 seconds, your brain is quite young, and you can approach tasks from different angles. If you answered each question correctly in less than 5 seconds, your brain is very young and flexible! You can notice the tiniest details right away and adapt to new situations easily! What is your result? Tell us in the comment section below! Subscribe to our new channel 'SLICK SLIME SAM' - https://goo.gl/zarVZo Give a thumbs–up to see more adventures! Germany: Multisensory teaching for improved learning results (Learning World: S5E25, 3/3)
The Elbinselschule in Hamburg, Germany, uses multisensory learning methods to teach its pupils. The primary school specifically trains the teachers to use these in class and combines them with movements, for a variety of subjects. Pupils spell words while jumping or roll around the corridors to do math exercises. Hopping from pad to pad while spelling words is not just for fun. Out of the blocks Maths and Science Series 2012
The 'A-team' from the All Hallows Catholic High School, Lancashire, have lived up to their name to become winners of STEM Challenge 10, the last competition in a successful series ahead of London 2012. They had the most innovative and exciting plan for a local sporting event, created using their maths and science skills. Cisco (www.ciscolondon2012.co.uk), STEMNET and the Pearson Foundation challenged students to consider the venue, location, sport, resources, facilities and equipment to plan a large scale, accessible and sustainable event in their home area. The finalists presented a Dragons' den Den style pitch to a panel of expert judges at Cisco House, London, overlooking the Olympic Park in Stratford. The judging was based on the core Values of the Olympic and Paralympic Movement: excellence, friendship, respect, courage, determination, inspiration and equality. From blind football to an aquatics centre, all of the finalist schools embraced and excelled in the Challenge. Despite extremely tough competition, the All Hallows Catholic High School stood out through their excellent data analysis surrounding their swimming venue. It was inspired from a love of circles and presented with nails reflecting the Olympics colours! STEM Challenges are a series of competitions designed to encourage young people aged 11 16 to use the skills learnt in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics lessons to think and work creatively about the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. STEMNET (The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network) works in partnership with major organisations to nationally manage each Challenge for UK Secondary Schools. Nearly 200 UK state-maintained secondary school teams took part in this final Challenge and were put through a rigorous regional judging process, in which eight teams made it through to the final: • All Hallows Catholic High School, Lancashire • Angley School, Kent and Medway • Kendrick School, Surrey and rest of Berkshire • Perins School, Hampshire and Isle of Wight • South Axholme School, Humberside • The Elton High School, Greater Manchester • The Gryphon School, Wiltshire, Swindon and Dorset • Woodham Community Technology College, County Durham and Tees Valley The winning team won £2500 for their school's STEM Club and eight tickets for Olympic Hockey. Second place was awarded to Woodham Technology Community College who received £1000 for their STEM Club and eight tickets for Olympic Canoeing whilst the third place team from South Axholme Academy were awarded £500 for their STEM Club and eight tickets for Olympic Rowing. The Elton High School were also Highly Commended by the judges for an excellent use of research, sources and surveys. STEM Challenge 10 forms part of Cisco's 'Out of the blocks' project which gives schools the chance to explore the events and venues of London 2012 whilst practising maths and science skills. More information about the 'Out of the blocks Maths and Science Series 2012' project can be found at www.mathsandscience2012.co.uk.

Why I teach my children to fail | Jim Harshaw | TEDxCharlottesville
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Teaching Kids to Fail Failure, struggle and setbacks are not only an inevitable part of life but a necessary part of the path to success. Jim Harshaw has learned many life lessons on the wrestling mat. Having won three ACC Championships for the University of Virginia, trained at the Olympic Training Center and competed overseas for Team USA he has experienced significant triumph and devastating defeat. He relates those powerful lessons of failure, struggle and setback to empower his audiences to overcome their own challenges and achieve success despite their inevitable failures. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

This Olympian, Mom and Entrepreneur is Revolutionizing the Way Kids Learn to Read
Julia Dexter is a tech entrepreneur and a former Olympian who competed in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia representing Canada as a member of the canoe kayak team. She began her business career in graphic design and has gone on to lead several successful technology ventures. Now, Julia has taken her tech business experience and a passion for literacy to create Squiggle Park, a learning game app to improve literacy rates for children worldwide. Growing up, Julia’s primary passion was sports. “When I was a kid, I had no doubt, I wanted to be an Olympic athlete. I was a swimmer for about 13 years. It's what I dedicated my life to, morning and night. I swam, and I made myself better, and I loved it. I thought I'd be a swimming Olympian, which wasn't the case.” When a canoe kayak coach came to her high school to recruit athletes, Julia, raised her hand. “I just loved the new challenge. The idea, that I could become so much better at something, again. It wasn't about refining little pieces, anymore. It was about big, big improvement, day over day.” Julia progressed quickly, she set her sights on the Olympic games, and four years later she was representing Canada at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. After the Olympics, Julia decided to hang up her paddle, get married and start a family. She shifted her career focus and began to pursue a career in graphic design which led her into the world of tech startups. Julia’s latest venture is as co-founder and CMO of Squiggle Park which aims to improve literacy rates for children worldwide. “My business partner Leah and I had worked in technology for quite a while, and we were getting more and more into gamification, and understanding how to motivate people to do things through games. We both had experiences in our lives where, people had struggled with literacy. We had an opportunity to work with a research team, to build out a reading skills methodology that would really accelerate the master. It was really about understanding early literacy, how to build a curriculum that kids could really master and grow confidence, and then wrapping it in a game that would just be so much fun and easy to play; because we're talking about the youngest, little learners, preschool kids. So, it had to be something that they could play independently and easily.” In October 2016, Squiggle Park released a pilot to teachers and now is used in over 6,000 schools around the world. “I’m so proud of the brand, the content, and just the success of the program itself. We're used, now, in the U.S. and Canada, but also in Mexico, China, Oman, Germany. That to me, is really exciting, to start to see people around the world, benefit from what we've built.” Reflecting on her life, Julia credits her success to focus, intensity, hard work and an unwillingness to give up. “I've learned that building business, is harder than going to the Olympics. I think that the persistence is so key, the idea that you just can't give up, because you never know what's around the corner. It's about pushing yourself beyond where you think you can go.” ABOUT TRUE CALLING: Our philosophy is simple: love what you do. Whatever you’re passionate about and decide to pursue in life, get after it.
