The Personalized Cell Therapy Challenge: A Race Against Time
Researchers in Boston are developing an exciting new method to fight cancer. This technology, called CAR T-cell therapy, collects a patient's immune cells and programs them to target their particular type of cancer. The cells are then reinjected to attack and kill the cancerous cells. Advancement of this potentially life-saving treatment will require an alliance between physicians, hospitals, biopharmaceutical manufacturers, and the life sciences industry to shorten and streamline what is now a complex, four- to six-week process. This panel will feature Boston leaders who are on the frontlines of CAR T-cell therapy to discuss current achievements, looming challenges, and the path forward to success. Speakers: Udit Batra (CEO, MilliporeSigma), Geoffrey Hodge (Chief Technical Officer, Unum Therapeutics), Marcela Maus (Director of Cellular Immunotherapy, Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, Shashi Murthy (Professor of Chemical Engineering, Northeastern University, Dr. Bruce LeVine (Barbara and Edward Netter Professor of Cancer Gene Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania), David Williams (President, Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center and Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer, Boston Children's Hospital)

What's Wrong with Government-Run Healthcare?
If you get sick or suffer a serious injury, you not only want medical care, you want quality medical care. What’s the best way to get it? Through a government-run program like Medicare for All or through our current free market system? Stanford policy expert Lanhee Chen has the answer in this video from Prager University. Get informed. After all, this is your health we’re talking about. For Students: http://l.prageru.com/2aozfkP JOIN our Educators Network! http://l.prageru.com/2aoz2y9 Script: It’s very easy for a politician to stand up before voters and say, “Health care is a right,” and then passionately advocate for “single-payer” or “free health care” or “Medicare for All”—whatever term they might use. But before we consider the merits of the government managing your health care—and that’s what this all boils down to—maybe we should ask a more basic question: What do we mean by “health care”? Because if you get sick—and here, we’re talking major illness—or you’re in serious pain, you don’t just want health care; you want quality health care. And where is your best chance of finding that? The answer is right here in America. For skilled doctors, cutting-edge medical treatments, and care without long delays, no other country rivals the United States. Not even close. Nobody from Texas is going to Canada for medical treatment. It’s almost always the other way around. Sure, our health care system has lots of issues—and we should address them—but do we really want to upend all the advantages that we do have and start from scratch? Because that’s what would have to happen if we completely turn health care over to the government. So, let’s imagine we make the change. We hear a lot about how great free health care would be, but it’s only fair we look at the downside. The first is that government-run health care takes medical decisions away from patients—that means you—and puts them in the hands of bureaucrats. They decide, for example, how many MRI machines are going to be available, or under what conditions you can get back surgery or a bypass, or even whether you qualify for cancer treatment. That’s how it works in the United Kingdom under its single-payer system. Because it has finite resources, the National Health Service, or NHS, sharply restricts access to treatments like hip and knee replacements, cataract surgery, and even prescription drugs to deal with common conditions like arthritis and diabetes. If you suffer from any of these ailments and many others in the UK, you may just have to live with the pain. And let’s hope you don’t have a medical emergency. In a January 2018 article in the New York Times, patients in emergency rooms around London are described as having “to wait 12 hours before they are tended to. Corridors are jammed with beds carrying [the] frail and elderly.” To deal with the situation, “hospitals [were] ordered to postpone non-urgent surgeries until the end of the month.” That hardly seems like an improvement over what we have in the US. Parmigiani Fleurier - The Cancer Research UK Boat Races
Parmigiani Fleurier is proud to be the official timing sponsor of the 2016 Cancer Research UK Boat Races, a unique sporting event for almost 2 centuries, which holds an important part in the British culture. The Boat Races are an annual contest between two rowing crews from Oxford and Cambridge universities and rank among the oldest sporting events in the world, first raced in 1829. With a heritage at the roots of Swiss watchmaking tradition, Parmigiani Fleurier feels very close to the values of rowing, such as they are demonstrated at each Boat Race. A spirit of challenge, yet of fair-play; individual perseverance and relentless training combined with the knowledge that one can only succeed as a team; finally, the importance of our heritage and of remaining faithful to it. “In watchmaking, the required precision of a hand’s movement can be as small as 3 hundredth of a millimeter. A watchmaker must train each gesture relentlessly; he must practice again and again until his brain and his hands achieve the perfect motion. I feel a close affinity to rowing because it involves the same self-control, focus and training that are fundamental as a watchmaker.” Michel Parmigiani

#PHARMA: Race Oncology has a successful track record of profitably recycling old drugs
Peter Molloy, CEO at Race Oncology explains how his business speeds up taking drugs to market. Race look for old drug assets which have been developed and discarded by big pharma companies who chose to to develop other opportunities. 'We don't need a billion dollar market' says Peter, 'if we can create a product with 100, 200, 300 million dollars in sales that's a very big opportunity for us.' Listed on ASX in Australia in July 2016, Race Oncology's main product is a drug called Bisantrene, and Peter says 'we are achieving all our goals in the timeline we set out'. We are trying to create value for investors, and that's what we focus on every day.' Bisantrene is a treatment for AML, acute myeloid leukaemia, and is used when other treatments have been tried. AML is principally a disease of the elderly and that market has grown with the ageing population. The Race Oncology interview is one of a series with Edison pharma clients shot at the Biotech and Money Conference at the Waldorf Hotel, London on 14.11.2017.

Milton Friedman on Slavery and Colonization
This clip is from the 15-part lecture series, "Milton Friedman Speaks" http://www.ideachannel.com/product_info.php?products_id=1137 Transcript available via FreedomChannel: http://freedomchannel.blogspot.com/2007/12/milton-friedman-on-slavery.html Summary: A student poses a question to Milton Friedman in which he asks for an appraisal of just how exactly the riches that now exist in the so called "capitalist democracies" were obtained and how those countries became so rich so quick. Specifically he asks Friedman to account for the effect that having free labor derived from slavery allowed them to enrich themselves, and how the possession of colonies allowed rich countries to bleed wealth out of their colonial domains. Friedman responds by claiming it's simply untrue that the wealth that arose in Western countries was due to slavery. Slavery was a disgrace and a blot on the United States' record, but many rich Western nations did not have slavery. Britain and Japan did not have slaves when they developed and Hong Kong does not have slaves today. He goes onto claim that the facts are against the notion that the wealth was created due to the West exploiting its colonies. The reason people are quick to think so is that they have an ingrained predisposition to see view the world as a zero-sum game where if one man gains the other man looses. In reality a free market allows everyone to gain through mutually beneficial voluntary transactions. When the West colonized Africa they brought with them technology that greatly improved the condition of the people that lived there and actually made them better off. The wheel for example had not even been invented in Africa in the 19th century. As a result of Africa's contacts with the West their condition improved greatly from what it previously was. To the charge that colonizers bleed wealth from their colonies, Friedman notes that it has always cost the mother country more to maintain its colonies then what was ever received in direct or indirect economic benefit. In the famous case of India, conclusive studies have shown that it cost Britain far more to maintain India then if it had never had it. Furthermore, many Western nations never possessed colonies yet became wealthy despite that fact. Ride The Rideau
When you support discovery and innovation at The Ottawa Hospital, you are supporting one of Canada's leading centres for cancer research. In just three years, Ride the Rideau has become the most successful single-day cancer fundraiser in Eastern Ontario. With more than $6.4 million raised since its inception, riders have helped fund new therapies and the opening of the Centre for Innovative Cancer Research (CICR), and have enabled patients to benefit from clinical trials faster than ever before. This all adds up to hope for the future and better outcomes for cancer patients. This is your chance to grab your steed and help make a difference. Ride the Rideau is a one-day road cycling adventure for people who are passionate about their active lifestyle and, more significantly, the quality of life of their loved ones, friends, colleagues, and neighbours. The money we raise will go directly to support cancer research at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. This is a chance to make an impact on improving patient care for our community and even the rest of the world.
