Biologists at the University of Florida have found a reason why men's ring fingers are generally longer than their index fingers — and why the reverse usually holds true for women. The finding could help medical professionals understand the origin of behavior and disease, which may be useful for customizing treatments or assessing risks in context with specific medical conditions. Writing this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, developmental biologists Martin Cohn, Ph.D., and Zhengui Zheng, Ph.D., of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the department of molecular genetics and microbiology at the UF College of Medicine, show that male and female digit proportions are determined by the balance of sex hormones during early embryonic development. Differences in how these hormones activate receptors in males and females affect the growth of specific digits.

What Medications Are Involved for MTFs? Various kinds of medication can be used to change the levels of sex hormones in your body. Some work on the part of your brain that stimulates sex hormone production, some work on your testicles (which produce testosterone), and some work directly on the cells in your body that respond to sex hormones. Some of these medications are also hormones, and some are another type of chemical. Typically MTF hormone therapy involves estrogen, medication to block testosterone, or a combination of the two. Sometimes a progestagen is added to the mix. Estradiol https://tblockers.com/estrogen/ Aldactone https://tblockers.com/spironolactone/ 1. Estrogen Estrogen is the main hormone responsible for promoting “female” physical traits. It works directly on tissues in your body (e.g., makes breasts develop) and also indirectly suppresses your testosterone. Estrogen can be taken in different ways: • pill (oral application) • skin patch or gel (transdermal application) • injection (intramuscular application) For reasons that aren’t understood, estrogen seems to cause blood clots less when it is taken through the skin rather than by pills or injections. For this reason, transdermal estrogen is usually recommended to anyone who is over age 40, a smoker, or otherwise at risk for blood clots. Transdermal estrogen also tends not to elevate triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood) as much as estrogen taken by pill/injection, so it is recommended if you are at risk of heart disease or stroke. There are different chemical formulations of estrogen. Usually 17-betaestradiol (patch = Estradot®, Estraderm®, or Oesclim®; pill form = Estrace®) is used because it has the least health risks. Conjugated estrogens (e.g., Premarin®) and ethinyl estradiol are not recommended because studies of non-trans women have shown them to increase the risk of some types of health problems. 3 2. Anti-androgens (also known as androgen blockers or androgen antagonists) Anti-androgen drugs work by blocking the effect of testosterone. This reduces “male” physical traits and has a mildly “feminizing” effect. For example, they will help slow “male”-pattern baldness, reduce growth of facial hair, and stop spontaneous/morning erections. There are different types of anti-androgens. The ones most typically prescribed to MTFs are spironolactone (Aldactone®) and finasteride (Proscar®). Cyproterone (Androcur®) can be used, but risks include depression and liver enzyme elevation so spironolactone is generally preferred. Anti-androgen drugs are often prescribed in addition to estrogen, as the two have effects that complement each other. Taking anti-androgens reduces the amount of estrogen you need to get the same effects, which minimizes the health risks associated with high doses of estrogen. Antiandrogen drugs can be prescribed alone for MTFs who want to reduce “masculine” characteristics for a more androgynous appearance, as it’s less “feminizing” than estrogen. 3. Progestagens There are mixed opinions about using progestagens (e.g., Prometrium®, Provera®) for MTFs. Most trans health programs around the world don’t use progestagens due to the lack of clear evidence that they are important in “feminization,” and the known side effects (which include depression, weight gain, and changes to blood fats). My research finds that increases in testosterone is associated with increased preferences for sexually dimorphic (i.e., masculinity in males and femininity in females) characteristics and changes in self-perception. Specifically, research shows that testosterone influences perceptions by increasing preferences for masculine men and feminine women, and influencing men's perceptions of their own dominance. This research demonstrates that, far from being arbitrary, our preferences and perceptions are at least in part governed by biological processes and that beauty is not just in the eye of the beholder. Dr. Lisa Welling is an Assistant Professor at Oakland University. Her Ph.D., entitled Individual Differences in Face Preferences, was completed in 2008 and was funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Grounded in evolutionary reasoning, Dr. Welling’s research generally surrounds three related areas: hormonal influences on behavior, sources of adaptive mate preferences, and interpersonal relationships. In addition to having co-edited a book entitled Evolutionary Perspectives on Social Psychology, Dr. Welling has published five book chapters and more than fifty scientific journal articles. Her research has been featured in the media multiple times on programs including lthe Oprah Winfrey Show and the Discovery Channel documentary Curiosity. They're going to tell you that your thyroid is going to be destroyed. They're going to tell you that your hormones are going to be completely out of whack, and that you're never going to recover. Well, it's not quite the truth. In this video, I want to give you the A to Z breakdown of what happens to the female body during a fast, during intermittent fasting in particular. How often should a women fast? What can they expect? What's happening with their hormones and what's happening with their reproductive system? In this video, I'm going to take you through A to Z what goes on, starting with the starvation and the hunger hormones, leading into your reproductive hormones, then leading into your thyroid. Let's dive right in, and men, this video's for you, too, because it's going to help describe exactly what's going on in your body, as well. Okay, here's the thing. When it comes down to starvation hormones ... we're talking leptin, ghrelin, insulin, things like that that we have to be paying attention to when it comes down to hunger and satiation ... women are much more sensitive to them. It's nothing bad, nothing wrong with them. It's simply a protective mechanism. It's not the fact that the thyroid's shutting down. It's the fact that the female body is recognizing that there's no food coming in, so they don't want to be producing eggs. They don't want to be ovulating. It's natural. Why would a female body want to produce eggs to stimulate potential reproduction if they're not eating, if they're starving? That's where this whole thing starts. It all has to do with leptin, ghrelin, and insulin. But it goes much more than that. We're going to talk about what's happening with the brain and with the gonads now. Let's talk about GNRH. GNRH is a particular thing that is secreted by the hypothalamus in both males and females, and it has to do with what's called the hypothalamic-pituitary gonadal axis. I know lots of guys that are proud of the HPTA, thinking that it only has to do with testosterone and their male bodies. Oh, no. That's not the case. The HPTA axis, that entire process, is men and women. And here's how it works. Your brain has an area called the hypothalamus. This hypothalamus ends up secreting something known as GNRH. This GNRH tells the pituitary gland to produce luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone. What these hormones end up doing is triggering the production of sperm and testosterone in men and producing ovulation and triggering progesterone and estrogen in women. They both do the same thing, just with a different end result. We still have the same catalyst, the same hormones. Now what ends up happening is how women go through this process compared to men. Now that we know GNRH and we understand the HPTA has to do with men and women, we can talk about the precursor to the GNRH, which is where the problem really starts, and that's something known as kisspeptin. Where the problem occurs with kisspeptin is just with people not knowing what's really going on. Hormones are like micro SD cards—small yet powerful. They are tiny chemical messengers that are secreted into the blood by organs called glands. They are important for maintaining the internal environment of the body—as well as interpersonal communications and for many even a marriage can be destroyed over hormonal imbalance. The sex hormones are responsible for a lot more than just determining someone’s sex at birth. They are also responsible for maintaining and regulating the sexual cycle, onset of puberty and secondary sexual characteristics, moods, general health and even immunity. Types Of Female Hormones Estrogen and progesterone are two of the most important female hormones, but they are far from being the only ones working in sync to maintain a woman. Apart from them, there are other female hormones as well, which are working to regulate and balance the sexual cycle. These include: –Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH): released from the hypothalamus, its function is to stimulate the production of the following hormones from the pituitary. -LH (Luteinizing hormone) -FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) –Inhibin –Activin –Follistatin –Testosterone Puberty And The Menstrual Cycle The onset of sexual maturation and transformation of a child into an adult, is called puberty. There are a lot of changes in the body including its shape and size, as well as attainment of fertility. The onset of puberty varies in boys and girls, averaging the age of 13 and 11 years, respectively. Usually, girls attain every stage of puberty before boys. While inception of puberty is dependent most certainly on hormones, its onset varies among girls and can only be partly explained by racial, genetic and environmental differences. Hormonal And Physical Changes At Puberty Puberty is determined by the hormonal changes and the physical changes in the body. This occurs systematically and one step leads to another. Hormonal changes at puberty: The part of the brain, called pituitary, can release the brakes on gonad-stimulating hormones (FSH and LH) any time. This means that puberty onset is held in check by the Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus. Physical Changes At Puberty: -Breast development -Hair development -Onset of menstruation -Growth support -Weight gain -Fat distribution -Development of sexual organs -Acne -Being a teenager Menstrual Cycle: Start of the ‘period’ or menstrual cycle is the most prominent sign of puberty in girls. The mechanism of puberty initiation is poorly understood, but clearly, genetic, environmental and physical factors (such as body fat) have an important role. Nutrition is another factor whose role has been underplayed when it comes to sexual maturation; under-nourished children have delayed sexual maturation and late onset of puberty. Furthermore, anorexia is associated with amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) and a decrease in the levels of gonadotropins.
