Magnesium is one of the most important minerals that you are probably not getting enough of in your everyday diet. Besides being a major co-factor in some 325 enzyme systems throughout the body, magnesium is also essential for achieving and maintaining muscle relaxation, strong bones, restful sleep, a healthy heart and optimal brain function, just a few of the many reasons why a growing number of health experts now refer to it as the "miracle" mineral. The best forms of magnesium Magnesium citrate -- Magnesium citrate is the most popular magnesium supplement, probably because it is inexpensive and easily absorbed. Since citric acid is a mild laxative, magnesium citrate functions as a constipation aid as well as a magnesium source. It is a great choice for individuals with rectal or colon problems but is unsuitable for those with loose bowel movements. Magnesium taurate -- Magnesium taurate is the best choice of magnesium supplement for people with cardiovascular issues, since it is known to prevent arrhythmias and guard the heart from damage caused by heart attacks. Magnesium taurate is easily absorbed (magnesium and taurine stabilize cell membranes together), and it contains no laxative properties. Magnesium malate -- Magnesium malate is a fantastic choice for people suffering from fatigue, since malic acid -- a natural fruit acid present in most cells in the body -- is a vital component of enzymes that play a key role in ATP synthesis and energy production. Since the ionic bonds of magnesium and malic acid are easily broken, magnesium malate is also highly soluble. Magnesium glycinate -- Magnesium glycinate (magnesium bound with glycine, a non-essential amino acid) is one of the most bioavailable and absorbable forms of magnesium, and also the least likely to induce diarrhea. It is the safest option for correcting a long-term deficiency. Magnesium chloride -- Though magnesium chloride only contains around 12 percent elemental magnesium, it has an impressive absorption rate and is the best form of magnesium to take for detoxing the cells and tissues. Moreover, chloride (not to be confused with chlorine, the toxic gas) aids kidney function and can boost a sluggish metabolism. Magnesium carbonate -- Magnesium carbonate is another popular, bioavailable form of magnesium that actually turns into magnesium chloride when it mixes with the hydrochloric acid in our stomachs. It is a good choice for people suffering from indigestion and acid reflux, since it contains antacid properties. The worst forms of magnesium Magnesium oxide -- Magnesium oxide is the most common form of magnesium sold in pharmacies, but it is non-chelated and possesses a poor absorption rate compared to those listed above. Magnesium sulfate -- Magnesium sulfate, also called Epsom salt, is a fantastic constipation aid but an unsafe source of dietary magnesium, since overdosing on it is easy. Magnesium glutamate and aspartate -- Avoid these two forms of magnesium completely. Glutamic acid and aspartic acid are components of the dangerous artificial sweetener aspartame, and both of them become neurotoxic when unbound to other amino acids.

Without magnesium, our muscles would be in a constant state of contraction 6.Low bone density. Magnesium plays a major role in bone formation, and the majority of the body's magnesium is stored in the bones. People with higher intakes of magnesium have a higher bone mineral density. 7.High blood pressure. Magnesium is very important in maintaining a healthy blood pressure, a deficiency can definitely cause pressure to be too high. Eating foods high in magnesium and other minerals can help prevent high blood pressure in people with prehypertension. 8.Type 2 diabetes. You don’t need medication. You don’t even have to change your diet or exercise either. One very simple way to do this is to increase your magnesium. This invaluable mineral is important to the health of every cell and organ, especially your heart. Playing a role in over 600 different reactions in your body. Unfortunately, researchers estimate that up to 80% of American do not get enough magnesium from their diet to replace the magnesium lost.1 Magnesium & Blood Pressure If you didn’t already know, 1 out of 3 Americans (33%) suffer from high blood pressure (hypertension).3 … which can increase your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Sadly, ½ of these people don’t even know they have hypertension and less than 20% have this under control.3 However, the good news is that in a clinical study5, people who had the highest levels of serum magnesium, had a 48% lower risk of hypertension 69% lower risk of type 2 diabetes 42% lower risk for CAC, which is the hardening of your arteries. All very positive for your heart and overall health. Better Than A Drug? One type of drug prescribed for hypertension are “calcium channel blockers”. These are medicines which relax and widen blood vessels, therefore allowing the blood to flow through the blood vessels smoothly, lowering blood pressure. The good news is that magnesium acts like a calcium channel blocker, easing blood vessel flow and lowering blood pressure – naturally, without any synthetic drugs. It was found in a human clinical study6 of more than 8,500 people that a higher intake of magnesium may decrease the risk of high blood pressure. Where To Get Your Magnesium From FOODS As far as best “magnesium-rich” foods, most of it is greens and vegetables: Spinach Beet greens Collard greens Turnip greens Broccoli Brussels sprouts Kale Bok choy Romaine lettuce Raw seeds: Pumpkin, sesame and sunflower have the highest Raw nuts: Cashews, almonds and Brazil nuts are the best sources Fatty fish: Wild-caught Alaskan salmon and mackerel are the best sources Unfortunately, getting optimal magnesium levels can be difficult because most foods are depleted of vitamins and mineral. SUPPLEMENTS Obviously, taking a pill a lot easier and more efficient. Unfortunately, there are about 9 common forms of magnesium supplements, which can get very confusing. Plus, most supplements of magnesium are poorly absorbed. So What’s The Best Form? Over the years, I’ve tested many different forms and combinations and I’ve discovered the best is a combination of 4 different magnesium's, which are clinically proven for maximum absorption: TRAACS® Magnesium Glycinate Amino Acid Chelate Albion® Di-Magnesium Malate Magnesium Citrate ======================================== Thank you for watching. Mastering Preeclampsia Want to Learn More? Join Our FREE Facebook Group! https://www.facebook.com/groups/1153328328045266/ Transcript: Hey guys, welcome back to Mastering Medics. Today we're talking about preeclampsia. So preeclampsia is the pregnancy induced hypertension. Okay, so pregnancy induced hypertension defined as a 30 point increase in systolic pressure and a, or a 15 point increase in diastolic pressure. This is from baseline vital signs of a pregnant patient. Now, that being said, a lot of time we won't have the base line vitals so that being said, what we're going to identify here is any reading over 140 over 90 is considered hypertensive in a patient. Keep that in mind, is that a lot of pregnancy patients, we see a drop in systolic pressure and lower than normal blood pressures during pregnancy, so you're seeing a 140 on 90, now that's not considered super hypertensive in normal states, but in someone that's pregnant, it's certainly is because we are going to see a natural drop in blood pressure during pregnancy. That increase to 140 over 90 is considered significant. Most commonly seen in the last 10 weeks or first 48 hours after labor. So yes, you can see it in the first 48 hours after labor. That's important, I've seen this a couple of times where it's kind of taken people by shock that it's actually happening after labor. It is the case. They're not exactly sure why it happens, there's a couple studies saying out there that a hypermnesic state or a metabolic state is the case of this. So, and also vasospasmic states. That's kind of something they know is happening is some sort of vasospasm is occurring. They're not really sure why. It's kind of the key here. Signs and symptoms, headaches, visual problems, epigastric pain, peripheral edema and the peripheral edema is and the headaches is simply because of that huge increase in pressures. So headaches are happening because they have a lot of pressure in their head, obviously, and then peripheral edema is just because of the, basically hypostatic pressures that are occurring here is that we have a lot of push back which is leaving fluid, leaving the vascular, leaving the vessels and going to the spaces, right? So that's why causes the edema. Treatment, keep the patient calm and keep them in dim lights because they can get quite a bit of visual problems and like spots in their eyes. Also, pain behind their eyes. Place in left lateral position, meaning the arm that their trimester members, so we want to keep them off their back or supine off their backs, that way the fetus isn't putting pressure on the inferior [venicava 00:02:40] that's returning blood back to the heart. Start an IV, very important, and also if you're an [inaudible 00:02:47], starting to use magnesium sulfate with the direction of your medical director. The reason being is that magnesium sulfate is known to be a smooth muscle relaxant, and if you look back at the cause, we're looking at abnormal vasospasm, so the theory behind using magnesium sulfate in this case is to try to reduce some of those vasospasm, that way we can hopefully reduce some of that hypertension that we're seeing with preeclampsia and limit the chances of going into a full eclampsia which is a seizure. We're going to talk about that in a whole other video as well. So that is preeclampsia. If you have any questions, please post it and we'll talk soon. Thanks guys. Top 5 things a pharmacist should let patients know: 1. Magnesium can cause toxic effects in people taking certain blood pressure medications, or affect minerals like fluoride, phosphate supplements or levothyroxine. 2. Further studies need to be done for proof, but magnesium may help with asthmatic symptoms. This is more commonly used to treat constipation or low magnesium levels in the body. 3. How it works: Magnesium prevents your muscle cells from taking in calcium, and it's the calcium that makes the muscle in your lungs tighten up. So, your lungs will relax and help you breathe better. 4. Some common side effects you may experience are diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. It's always important to stay hydrated. 5. Contraindications include: Don't take magnesium if you have kidney or heart disease, or if you are pregnant. References: Natural Medicines. Food, Herbs, & Supplements. Magnesium. Controlling Blood Pressure in Preeclampsia Overview Preeclampsia is a serious condition that can occur during pregnancy. The condition causes your blood pressure to become very high and can be life-threateningly. Preeclampsia can occur early in pregnancy or even postpartum, but often occurs after 20 weeks gestational age. An estimated 10 percent of women experience preeclampsia. Doctors don’t know exactly what causes preeclampsia. They think it’s possibly related to blood vessels in the placenta developing improperly. This can be due to family history, blood vessel damage, immune system disorders, or other unknown causes. Regardless of the cause, preeclampsia requires fast action to control blood pressure. What Are the Symptoms of Preeclampsia? If you have two blood pressure measurements equal to or greater than 140/90 mm Hg four hours apart and you do not have a history of chronic high blood pressure, you may have preeclampsia. This increase in blood pressure can take place suddenly and with no warning. Other symptoms associated with preeclampsia include: difficulty breathing nausea severe headache shortness of breath sudden weight gain swelling in the face and hands too much protein in the urine, which can indicate kidney problems vision changes, such as sensitivity to light, blurred vision, or temporary vision loss vomiting It’s important to seek immediate medical treatment if you experience any of these symptoms. Women may initially pass off their symptoms as those of a normal pregnancy. If you suspect you have preeclampsia, it’s better to be safe than to experience more serious complications. How Do Doctors Control Your Blood Pressure? Your doctor will consider how far along you are in your pregnancy and your baby’s development when deciding how to control your blood pressure. If you’re 37 weeks pregnant or further along, delivery of the baby and placenta are recommended to stop progression of the disease. If your baby hasn’t yet developed enough, your doctor may prescribe medicines designed to help your baby grow while also keeping your blood pressure low. Examples include: blood pressure-lowering medications corticosteroids, which are medications used to help your baby’s lungs mature and reduce inflammation in your liver medications known to help reduce seizures, including magnesium sulfate In many instances, these medications are delivered in a hospital setting. While bed rest has not necessarily been proven to help reduce blood pressure, you can be more closely monitored in a hospital. Controlling Blood Pressure at Home If you have mild preeclampsia (somewhere between 120/80 and 140/90 blood pressures), your doctor may allow you to rest at home. You’ll want to keep a close watch on your preeclampsia symptoms. Examples of steps you could take in an attempt to keep your blood pressure low and minimize side effects include: decreasing your salt intake drinking plenty of water throughout the day increasing the amount of protein in your diet, if your diet has previously lacked enough protein resting on the left side of your body to reduce pressure to major blood vessels Keep in mind that taking these steps may not effectively prevent your preeclampsia from worsening. Your doctor will likely recommend you come to their office regularly for checkups to test your baby’s health. What Are the Complications of Preeclampsia? The most serious complication of preeclampsia is death, both to the mother and baby. Doctors also know that women who experience preeclampsia during pregnancy are at greater risk for cardiovascular and kidney disease in the future. Women with preeclampsia can also have seizures (known as eclampsia) or they’re at risk for HELLP syndrome. This serious condition stands for hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet counts. This condition can cause blood clotting disorders, severe pain, and can be life-threatening. It’s important to call your doctor right away if you’re experiencing any of the symptoms of preeclampsia to help prevent any of these possible complications. What Is the Outlook for People with Preeclampsia? If you’re far enough along with your pregnancy to deliver your baby, your blood pressure will usually return to normal levels after giving birth. Sometimes this can take up to three months. In most instances, your doctor will do everything possible to help your baby develop enough to be safely delivered.

Epsom salt provides a wealth of health and beauty benefits. Its secret ingredient is the chemical compound magnesium sulfate. The body uses magnesium to regulate hundreds of enzymes and also plays a vital role in many bodily functions. A magnesium deficiency can result in high blood pressure, osteoporosis and migraines. Sulfate plays a role in the formation of brain tissue and improves the body’s absorption of essential nutrients. In today’s video we’ll highlight the top health benefits of Epsom salt. 1. Eases Aches & Pains The next time your body has aches and pains, reach for Epsom salt. Its magnesium can alleviate swelling and inflammation. It also has been shown to help lower high blood pressure, and prevent osteoporosis and migraines. Magnesium reduces stiffness, inflammation and most pain associated with arthritis, including gout. This miracle worker assists in bone mineralization, promotes nerve functionality and soothes nerve pain. 2. Aids Detoxification The magnesium in Epsom salt assists in eliminating harmful toxins from the body and detoxifies cells to flush out environmental contaminants. 3. Stress reliever Epsom salt can relieve stress, which can drain the body of magnesium and increases adrenaline levels. It also can trigger the release and uptake of serotonin, a mood-enhancing chemical in the brain. The proper levels of serotonin regulate anxiety, and creates feelings of well-being and relaxation. Three times a week, add 1 cup of Epsom salt to a warm bath and soak for 20 minutes. 4. Relieves Muscle Cramps Epsom salt is a great remedy for treating muscle cramps or relieving sore muscles after workouts. The magnesium reduces inflammation which eases pain. This in turn promotes muscle relaxation and healing. Make a thick paste of Epsom salt and hot water. Apply it on the affected area for 15 to 20 minutes for soothing comfort. 5. Improves Digestion Epsom salt assists in the elimination of harmful toxins and waste products from the body and the digestive system. It also works as a laxative in treating constipation. Dissolve 1 or 2 teaspoons of Epsom salt in 1 cup of warm water. Drink on an empty stomach once a day. 6. Adds Volume to Hair Epsom salt can add body to your hair, remove excess oil from your scalp and keep both healthy. Over time, chemicals in shampoos and conditioners can accumulate on the scalp and can result in oily hair, thinning hair and hair loss. The minerals in Epsom salt can repair and strengthen damaged hair. To make a voluminous hair mask, mix equal parts of a warm deep conditioner and Epsom salt. Apply to slightly damp hair. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cold water. Note: Only use this treatment once a week. If you have oily hair, add a little bit of Epsom salt to your shampoo and wash your hair as usual. Do this no more than twice a week. 7. Exfoliates Skin To maintain a healthy, glowing complexion, it’s essential to exfoliate once or twice a week to eliminate dead skin cells. Exfoliation also removes excess oil from skin pores so your skin doesn’t become fertile ground for itchiness, pimples, blackheads and other common problems. Gently rub a handful of Epsom salt over damp skin to remove dead skin cells. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. 8. Improves Heart Health Epsom salt is also heart friendly. The magnesium improves blood circulation, which decreases the chances of heart disease and strokes. Magnesium helps maintain a normal heart rhythm and healthy arteries. Healthy arteries will mean there is less risk of developing blood clots, plaque buildup and damage to arterial walls. Enjoy an Epsom salt bath 3 times a week to improve your cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of heart attack. 9. Alleviates Foot Problems Rough and callused feet also need tender care. Epsom salt can soften dry, rough heels. Its natural properties work wonders in diminishing foot odor, and also improve athlete’s foot and other foot problems. Add ½ cup of Epsom salt to a foot tub filled with warm water and soak for 10 minutes daily. Symptoms should improve soon. When taken internally, Epsom salt can cause adverse side effects, including gastrointestinal irritation, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Consult your doctor before taking Epsom salt. Do not take it longer than 1 week. Magnesium Sulphate uses review Treating and preventing varicose veins वैरिकोज वेन्स के लिए उपाय Varicose veins, also known as varicoses or varicosities, occur when your veins become enlarged, dilated, and overfilled with blood. Varicose veins typically appear swollen and raised, and have a bluish-purple or red color. They are often painful. The condition is very common, especially in women. Around 25 percent of all adults have varicose veins. In most cases, varicose veins appear on the lower legs. Varicose veins occur when veins aren’t functioning properly. Veins have one-way valves that prevent blood from flowing backward. When these valves fail, blood begins to collect in the veins rather than continuing toward your heart. The veins then enlarge. Varicose veins often affect the legs. The veins there are the farthest from your heart, and gravity makes it harder for the blood to flow upward. Some potential causes for varicose veins include: pregnancy menopause age over 50 standing for long periods of time obesity family history of varicose veins SYMPTOMS Symptoms of varicose veins The primary symptoms of varicose veins are highly visible, misshapen veins, usually on your legs. You may also have pain, swelling, heaviness, and achiness over or around the enlarged veins. In some cases, you can develop swelling and discoloration. In severe cases, the veins can bleed significantly, and ulcers can form. DIAGNOSIS Diagnosing varicose veins Your doctor will likely examine your legs and visible veins while you’re sitting or standing to diagnose varicose veins. They may ask you about any pain or symptoms you’re having. Your doctor may also want to do an ultrasound to check your blood flow. This is a noninvasive test that uses high-frequency sound waves. It allows your doctor to see how blood is flowing in your veins. Depending on the location, a venogram may be done to further assess your veins. During this test, your doctor injects a special dye into your legs and takes X-rays of the area. The dye appears on the X-rays, giving your doctor a better view of how your blood is flowing. Tests such as ultrasounds or venograms help ensure that another disorder like a blood clot or a blockage isn’t causing the pain and swelling in your legs. TREATMENT AND PREVENTION Treating and preventing varicose veins In general, doctors are conservative when treating varicose veins. You’ll probably be advised to make changes to your lifestyle, instead of trying more aggressive treatments. Lifestyle changes The following changes may help prevent varicose veins from forming or becoming worse: Avoid standing for extended periods of time. Lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. Exercise to improve your circulation. Use compression socks or stockings. If you already have varicose veins, you should take these steps to prevent new varicose veins. You should also elevate your legs whenever you’re resting or sleeping. Compression Your doctor may advise you to wear special compression socks or stockings. These place enough pressure on your legs so that blood can flow more easily to your heart. They also decrease swelling. The level of compression varies, but most types of compression stockings are available in drugstores or medical supply stores.varicose veins are causing a lot of pain or damaging your overall health, your doctor might try an invasive procedure. Vein ligation and stripping is a surgical treatment that requires anesthesia. During the procedure, your surgeon makes cuts in your skin, cuts the varicose vein, and removes it through the incisions. Although updated variations of vein-stripping surgeries have been developed, they are less commonly performed because newer, less invasive options are available. Preeclampsia & Eclampsia: Risk Factors, Signs & Symptoms, and Treatment.Do you know what is Preeclampsia, Causes. How can we Diagnosis and Treatments during Pregnancy. We have lot of questions in our mind like preeclampsia treatment, how to prevent preeclampsia, preeclampsia definition, what is eclampsia, preeclampsia prevention, preeclampsia risk factors. preeclampsia symptoms at 37 weeks, preeclampsia blood pressure how to overcome this. so don't panic and keep patience. Preeclampsia is a life-threatening medical condition that can happen in about 10% of women usually during the second half of pregnancy and postpartum postbirth. The major signs of preeclampsia are high blood pressure and protein in the urine. Women with preeclampsia can develop headaches and seizures, at which point preeclampsia becomes eclampsia. Both preeclampsia and eclampsia can threaten the baby's and mother's life and potentially injure many organs such as the brain, heart, kidneys and liver. We don't completely understand yet why it happens, and the treatment is usually to deliver the baby. Most women get well as soon as the baby is born. Risk Factors Pregnancy-associated Factors • Multiple gestations (Twins, Triplets,..) • Having a baby with chromosomal abnormalities • Hydatidiform mole • Hydrops fetalis • Oocyte donation or donor insemination • Structural congenital anomalies • Urinary tract infection Maternal-specific Factors • Younger and older mothers (less than 20 years or greater than 35 years) • Hypertension - before pregnancy • Black race • Obesity • Family history of preeclampsia (Mother or sister) • Nulliparity (First baby) • Preeclampsia in a previous pregnancy • Women with certain medical conditions: gestational diabetes, type I diabetes, lupus, renal disease, thrombophilias • Stress • New husband • First-time father • Previously fathered a preeclamptic pregnancy in another woman History of Prior Preeclampsia A woman who had preeclampsia in a previous pregnancy has an increased risk of recurring preeclampsia in her next pregnancy. The exact recurrence risk depends on several factors that are related both to the mother's medical condition, when in pregnancy it was diagnosed, and the circumstances of her prior preeclampsia. The risk of recurrence increases if preeclampsia in the previous pregnancy was diagnosed early in pregnancy and if the woman has had preeclampsia in two previous pregnancies. Women with chronic hypertension, for example, have a 70% risk of recurring preeclampsia in the next pregnancy. And women with severe preeclampsia in their first pregnancy have a 45% risk of recurrence. Treatment for preeclampsia may include: Medications to lower blood pressure These medications, called antihypertensives, are used to lower your blood pressure if it's dangerously high. Blood pressure in the 140/90 millimeters of mercury range generally isn't treated. Although there are many different types of antihypertensive medications, a number of them aren't safe to use during pregnancy. Discuss with your doctor whether you need to use an antihypertensive medicine in your situation to control your blood pressure. Bed rest Bed rest used to be routinely recommended for women with preeclampsia. But research hasn't shown a benefit from this practice, and it can increase your risk of blood clots, as well as impact your economic and social lives. For most women, bed rest is no longer recommended. Hospitalization Severe preeclampsia may require that you be hospitalized. In the hospital, your doctor may perform regular nonstress tests or biophysical profiles to monitor your baby's well-being and measure the volume of amniotic fluid. A lack of amniotic fluid is a sign of poor blood supply to the baby. Delivery If you're diagnosed with preeclampsia near the end of your pregnancy, your doctor may recommend inducing labor right away. The readiness of your cervix whether it's beginning to open (dilate), thin (efface) and soften (ripen) also may be a factor in determining whether or when labor will be induced. In severe cases, it may not be possible to consider your baby's gestational age or the readiness of your cervix. If it's not possible to wait, your doctor may induce labor or schedule a C-section right away. During delivery, you may be given magnesium sulfate intravenously to prevent seizures.

There is much evidence that most of us have magnesium deficiency. Estimates range from 30% to over 50%. This deficiency is more prevalent in chronic diseases such as diabetes, inflammatory diseases and alcohol dependence. The most common forms are magnesium sulfate and citrate. There has been some press recently about the neurologic and mental health advantages of magnesium threonate. Preeclampsia is a serious medical condition associated with pregnancy, and it can start to develop anytime after the 20th week, and it's associated with elevated blood pressure. A normal blood pressure for a person is 120 over 80, and if a pregnant woman has blood pressures that are 140 over 90 or greater, then a doctor is going to - that's going to get their attention and they'll want to look into it. And that involves drawing a woman's blood, and looking at a urine sample, and determining if there's protein in the urine. The combination of elevated blood pressure and protein in the urine is what diagnoses preeclampsia. And then it can be severe or not severe. And severe features would include changing labs and also symptoms such as a headache that the woman can't just kick. It's not just due to the fact that she's hungry, or tired, or hasn't gotten enough sleep, or is stressed out. It's a persistent headache that she just can't kick. So if a pregnant woman has elevated blood pressure and has a headache, or has had a sudden increase in swelling, or is having pain underneath her ribs (especially off to the right side) - these are all things that are associated with preeclampsia. And ultimately, the cause of preeclampsia is pregnancy, so the only cure is delivery. And if this starts to happen earlier on in the pregnancy, it's difficult, because of course you want to buy as much time during the pregnancy as you can, but sometimes it's so severe that delivery is necessary, because the process won't start to reverse itself until after the placenta is delivered, and of course, the placenta can't be delivered until after the baby is born. And so a doctor will determine that it's time for delivery when the risk to the woman and her baby is higher if she is to stay pregnant than it is for the baby to be born at an early gestational age. I referred to labs earlier that are done. And the blood work that's done helps a doctor to determine if a woman is going into HELLPS. It's a syndrome associated with preeclampsia, and it's an acronym, HELLPS. So the H stands for Hemolysis of red blood cells. EL stands for Elevated Liver enzymes. And then the last portion, LP, stands for Low Platelets. And so these are all changing labs that a doctor would see in a severe case of preeclampsia. And again, it would warrant delivery, but the doctor would determine the exact timing of delivery based on their knowledge of the woman's circumstances. Now you had a specific question about magnesium sulphate. And this is a medication used for a lot of different reasons, but as it relates to preeclampsia, it helps to reduce a woman's chances of having a seizure related to this condition, and so it's important to be on it if your doctor has said that you need it. If you have more specific questions about your situation, be sure to talk with your doctor and they'll be able to give you tailored information and advice. If you have more questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.

HELLP Syndrome is a series of symptoms that make up a syndrome that can affect pregnant women. HELLP syndrome is thought to be a variant of preeclampsia, but it may be an entity all on its own. There are still many questions about the serious condition of HELLP syndrome. The cause is still unclear to many doctors and often HELLP syndrome is misdiagnosed. It is believed that HELLP syndrome affects about 0.2 to 0.6 percent of all pregnancies. The name HELLP denotes for: *H- hemolysis *EL- elevated liver enzymes LP- low platelets counts. It is often assumed that HELLP Syndrome will always occur in connection with preeclampsia, but there are times when the symptoms of HELLP will occur without a diagnosis of preeclampsia being made. About 4-12% of women with diagnosed preeclampsia will develop HELLP syndrome. Unfortunately since the symptoms of HELLP syndrome may be the first sign of preeclampsia, this is what can often lead to a misdiagnoses. The symptoms of HELLP may cause misdiagnoses of other conditions such as hepatitis, gallbladder disease, or idiopathic, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura , which is a bleeding disorder. The most common symptoms of HELLP syndrome include: Headaches Nausea and vomiting that continue to get worse–This may also feel like a serious case of the flu. Upper right abdominal pain or tenderness Fatigue or malaise A woman with HELLP may experience other symptoms that often can be attributed to other things such as normal pregnancy concerns or other pregnancy conditions. These symptoms may include: Visual disturbances High blood pressure Protein in urine Edema Severe headaches Bleeding Because the symptoms of HELP can mimic many other conditions or complications, it is encouraged that physicians run a series of blood tests, including liver function, on any woman experiencing symptoms during the third trimester of pregnancy. HELLP syndrome may occur before the third trimester but it is rare. It also may occur within 48 hours of delivery, although symptoms may take up to 7 days to be evident. Blood pressure measurements and urine tests to check for protein are often monitored when diagnosing HELLP syndrome. But the following tests and results are what help a physician to make an accurate diagnosis of HELLP Syndrome: Hemolysis -Red blood bells Abnormal peripheral smear Lacatate dehydrogenase more than 600 U per L Bilirubin more than 1.2 mg per dl Elevated liver Enzyme levels Serum aspartate amniotransferase more than 70 U per L Lacatate dehydrogenase more than 600 U per L Low Platelets Platelet count Treatment’s that may be used to manage HELLP until baby is delivered include: Bed rest and admission into a medical facility to be monitored closely Corticosteroid Magnesium Sulfate Blood transfusion if platelet count gets too low Blood pressure medication Fetal monitoring and tests including biophysical tests, sonograms, non stress tests and fetal movement evaluation If the pregnancy is more than 34 weeks gestation or the symptoms of HELLP begin to worsen, delivery is the recommended course of treatment. In the past, Cesarean delivery was the most common way for delivery of babies whose moms were dealing with HELLP syndrome . HELLP syndrome does not cause reason for an automatic cesarean, and in some situations, operative surgery may cause more complications due to the possibility of blood clotting problems related to low platelet counts.

Not only is magnesium important for preventative health measures, but it also has unique therapeutic applications, which we will discuss in this video. Unfortunately, magnesium deficiency is still a concern for many part of the world. To ensure we are getting enough magnesium to support our health, we will want to consume foods such as spinach, swiss chard, beans and almonds to name a few. Lets discuss some of the great health promoting abilities of the mineral magnesium. 1. First, getting enough of the important mineral magnesium is important for the overall health of our heart. Magnesium works to regulate calcium and potassium, two very important heart healthy nutrients. Magnesium, along with calcium, help to support healthy blood pressure levels and prevent hypertension, a risk factor for heart disease. As well, magnesium has anti-inflammatory benefits which can support cardiovascular system health. 2. One of the most well researched therapeutic benefits of adequate magnesium intake is that it can help to prevent migraine headaches. This is attributed to magnesium’s involvement in both blood circulation and neurotransmitter function. This allows magnesium to help reduce and control migraine headaches and the pain associated with it by reducing blood vessel constriction. As well, magnesium helps to release pain reducing hormones that can help to control migraine headaches and improve the symptoms associated with it. 3. Magnesium can also help to promote proper digestion of the foods we eat and relieve digestive related ailments. Magnesium works to relax the muscles that are found within the digestive tract and intestinal wall. It can also help to relieve symptoms of constipation since it can help to neutralize stomach acid and promote the movement of food through the intestines. Magnesium also has a natural and mild laxative effect. 4. This important mineral can also help to ease feelings of anxiety and calm the nerves. This is because magnesium is very important when it comes to GABA function, which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that helps to produce hormones such as serotonin. These hormones play a vital role in promoting relaxation and may even help to calm the brain. Some studies have shown that magnesium deficiency could lead to enhanced anxiety. Due to the complex nature of anxiety and its symptoms, be sure to discuss with your medical practitioner for further treatment and prevention measure. 5. Magnesium can also help to treat insomnia and promote sleep as some studies have indicated. Magnesium can help to ease the mind and make it easier to sleep. It can also help to increase the amount of sleep we get, allow us to fall asleep faster, increase melatonin concentrations and lower levels of cortisol in the body as some research has shown. Other studies have demonstrated magnesium’s improvement with sleep efficiency and both sleep time and onset. 6. Lastly, magnesium can help to prevent osteoporosis and promote the overall health of our bones. This is because magnesium is vital for proper bone formation and healthy bone density. It also plays a key role in balancing blood concentration of vitamin C in the body and can increase bone mineral density. Thank you for watching the video! Please like, comment and share.
