Beat Menopause Belly Fat by Starving Your Fat Cells (Not Yourself)

You can beat menopausal belly fat. Watch as Dr. Becky shares the foods to eat and avoid to starve your fat cells (not yourself). You don’t want those extra pounds, so in this video I’ll show you how to keep belly fat under control by starving your fat cells, without starving yourself. Menopause changes two things: 1. It change where fat is stored on your body (i.e. more gets deposited in your midsection and less in your lower body). 2. It changes where estrogen is produced. The ovaries no longer make estrogen, but your fat cells do, so higher body fat% is not frowned upon by your post-menopausal body. Cortisol is another hormone that is not automatically thought about with menopause, but it contributes to belly fat. Think of cortisol as the stress hormone, physical or emotional stress, even a lack of sleep causes an increased release of cortisol. Bottom Line: you have to work with your body during and after menopause to get it to do what you want. The trick is to starve your fat cells without starving yourself. In fact, it’s thought to affect almost 7% of pre-menopausal women in the US. But there is surprisingly limited information on how to treat it naturally. That's the topic of this video. What Is The Best Diet for PCOS? PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome) is a condition characterised by hormonal imbalances in women. Specifically, an imbalance in male hormones (or androgens) produced by the ovaries. Unfortunately there is no known cure yet, and the cause is unknown. However, genetic predisposition coupled with inadequate diet is thought to be a major driver. STUDY: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23420000 Research shows the most effective eating pattern for PCOS is one that promotes weight loss and reduces levels of the hormone insulin. This is because PCOS coupled with weight gain drives insulin resistance. That’s why PCOS dramatically increases risk of type 2 diabetes and other metabolic health conditions. Additionally, studies show high insulin levels appear to upset regulation of the sex hormones. This worsens PCOS in a viscous cycle. Whichever diet or eating pattern helps you to successfully lose weight and lower insulin will have the best possible outcomes. Assuming you have been unsuccessful following a low-fat diet (which can work), the best alternative is a low carb diet. A low carb diet is an eating pattern where carbs make up roughly 30% or less of your energy intake. By comparison, the average American diet is around 60% carbs. Reducing carbs tends to equal a higher protein intake, shown to keep you feeling full for longer and reduce total calories consumed through the day. That’s why low carb diets can work well for weight loss when not counting calories. A ketogenic diet, which is an extremely low carb diet, has also shown to be promising, but it's incredibly hard to stick to long-term, so mch so that I don't typically recommend it. Aside from overall eating patterns, there are some common food concerns of PCOS patients that should be clarified. One of the main issues is dairy consumption. Some observational studies have linked low-fat dairy intake with increased risk of PCOS, while others suggest full-fat dairy has a protective effect. It’s really unclear at this stage, but we cannot draw any firm conclusions from observational studies. If low-fat dairy is indeed bad for PCOS, and full fat dairy is not, it’s likely because low-fat dairy and other “diet” products tend to have significantly more sugar. In any case, dairy-free is certainly worth a try if other changes have not helped. With a wholesome diet, dairy is not essential. There have also been some concerns with soy and PCOS, but again there isn’t much evidence to go by. It seems moderate soy consumption is likely safe, but at the same time it seems an unnecessary risk to eat a lot or increase your intake. STUDY: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21793705 Several studies indicate those with PCOS tend to have high levels of a compound in the blood called homocysteine. High levels are thought to be an independent risk factor for heart disease and stroke The most efficient way to reduce homocysteine is by increasing folate or folic acid intake, which are forms of vitamin b9. Folate comes from whole foods, while folic acid is the synthetic version. The top folate sources per 100-gram serve are beans and lentils, raw spinach, asparagus, and romaine (cos) lettuce. Lastly, you must Limit Junk Food and Added Sugars, which are a nightmare for treating PCOS. They’re typically high in calories and added sugars, which can raise insulin levels and disrupt other hormones. Know that treating PCOS also involves reducing chronic stress, increasing physical activity levels and getting adequate sleep. While being active and fits is important in all stages in our lives, it has definite benefits during perimenopause! Insomnia and emotional/stress eating can be a factor in weight gain. During perimenopause the dip in estrogen can cause us to gain belly fat and retain water. After the age of 30 we lose muscle mass and bone density. All of which can contribute to weight gain. So, how do we combat this? Getting good, quality sleep, decreasing stress and EXERCISE. (which will help with getting a good nights sleep and reducing stress! It is all interconnected!!) Glycemic Index: The “glycemic index” is a term used to describe the blood glucose response to a particular food. The glycemic index is a method of ranking the effects of carb-based foods based on their effects on blood sugar - refers to how quickly sugar reaches the bloodstream after food consumption. High-GI foods pass rapidly through your digestive system and into your bloodstream, driving up your blood glucose levels and causing insulin to spike. Low-GI foods, on the other hand, pass more slowly through the digestive system and enter the bloodstream gradually, which keeps insulin levels low (1,2) Slow Carb: Your gut quickly absorbs high-GI carbs and spikes your blood sugar, resulting in high insulin that can increase storage of belly fat, increases inflammation, raises triglycerides and lowers HDL, raises blood pressure, lowers testosterone in men, and contributes to infertility in women. High-fiber, low-sugar carbs, are slowly digested and don’t lead to blood sugar and insulin spikes. These slow carbs reduce cancer risk and increase your body’s ability to detoxify (3) Blood Glucose and Insulin: When your blood glucose and insulin move up and down rapidly or stay high it disrupts your natural blood glucose balance. This can lead to your body having trouble responding to your blood glucose levels, which may contribute to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is associated with many health problems - type 2 Diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease (4) Study: A study published in August 2015 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition analyzed data from about 70,000 postmenopausal women. They found that women who had higher dietary glycemic index intake had increased odds of developing depression within the three-year study. They also found that higher consumption of added sugars was associated with depression risk. On the other hand, women who ate more fiber, fruits, and vegetables (which often have lower glycemic indexes) were shown to have a lower chance of developing depression, per the study’s findings. Researchers suggested that the association may be due to many different mechanisms.
