For more information on the ketogenic diet: https://draxe.com/hub/keto-diet/#whatistheketodiet Essentially, the ketogenic diet is a very low-carb diet plan that works by “tricking” the body into thinking it is fasting, through a strict elimination of glucose that is found in carbohydrate foods. At the core of the ketogenic diet is severely restricting intake of all or most foods with sugar and starch (carbohydrates). These foods are broken down into sugar (insulin and glucose) in our blood once we eat them, and if these levels become too high, extra calories are much more easily stored as body fat and results in unwanted weight gain. However, when glucose levels are cut off due to low-carb dieting, the body starts to burn fat instead and produces ketones that can be measured in the blood. When you’re following a ketogenic diet, your body is burning fat for energy rather than carbohydrates, so in the process most people lose weight and excess body fat rapidly, even when consuming lots of fat and adequate calories through their diet. Another major benefit of the keto diet is that there’s no need to count calories, feel hungry or attempt to burn loads of calories through hours of intense exercise. How Many Carbs Should You Eat Per Day?

However, if you’re an active person consuming 1600-2000 calories a day, you want carbohydrates to be about 40% of your overall intake of calories, 30% protein, and 30% fat. These numbers can fluctuate depending on if you’re trying to burn fat, build muscle, or just stay fueled. In general, the amount of carbs you consume per day should be between 500-800 calories, which is 120-200g of carbohydrates. A lot of people today are saying carbs are bad for you. However, carbohydrates are important for energy and cellular function. They can be harmful if you overload on carbohydrates, which is what a lot of people do today. I would encourage you to start a food diary for 3-7 days and write down what you're eating on a daily basis. Then monitor your daily overall intake of fat, protein, and carbohydrates and see how your body does. Then, try adjusting these proportions based on what you’re trying to achieve. Try getting more grass-fed animal products, more fruits, more vegetables, more sprouted nuts and seeds, more coconut products, more raw fermented dairy products and overall real foods. Don't worry about including your vegetable carbs as a part of this formula. 2. Add intermittent fasting to a ketogenic diet. Every time you eat, you stimulate insulin to some degree. Adding this will help reduce insulin. 3. Nutrient-dense fats. You want to ensure you consume fats that higher amount of nutrients - wild caught fish, grass fed meats and dairy, coconut oil, grass fed butter, olive, olive oils and fish. Hey guys, in this video I am going to share this 3 important low carb high fat ketogenic diet tweaks. The ketogenic diet basically says that you can 20 to 50g of carbohydrates and a lot of times people don’t differentiate what carbohydrates they were using. If you take 1 cup of spinach with 20g of carbohydrates, there is only two and a half cups. When you do a 50grams there is only 6.25 cups. So in your mind if you are including the vegetable family and you are doing 20 carbs you are doing like 2 cups of spinach that is not going to give you the nutrients and vitamins that you need to keep you healthy. 1 cup of kale, 20 grams is 1 cup, 50grams is 1 and a half cups. Imagine having that in small amounts, that is not enough. 1 cup of bell pepper is 20 grams, 2 cup is 50 grams. 1 cup of spring greens like a salad mixture, 2.5 cups would be 20grams, 6.25 cups would be 50 grams. In other words, you have to consume 7 to 10 cups of vegetables that is tweak number 1. And don’t let 20-50g dosage restrict your vegetable intake, you got to keep this high because if you do ketogenic diet without the vegetables you tend to end up in a fatty liver. Number 2, we want to add intermittent fasting into the ketogenic diet. The ketogenic diet doesn't normally have an intermittent fasting, they allow snacks. So why do we have to do that? Simply because of the principle or the physiological fact that everytime you eat whether its fat or protein, you stimulate insulin to some degree. If you want to handle insulin resistance prediabetes, we have to include intermittent fasting as part of this eating plan. No. 3, nutrient dense fats, when you look up a traditional ketogenic diet, it doesn't differentiate the types of fats that you need, you could mistakenly just consume all of the fats to MCT oil which bytheway doesn't have a lot of fat-soluble vitamins in it or like heavy cream, they don't differentiate hormones in that milk product or not. Or vegetable oils, they don't differentiate if it is a soy oil or corn oil, or some other oil that could be harmful because its GMO. Here are some healthy facts, the fats that is normally in the proteins that you eat, like in different meats like grass-fed beef or grass-fed dairy, the normal fats in there are actually good for you. It sounds logical that adding fat to the body will increase more fat in the arteries and on the body, however, that’s not how it works. Hormones turn calories into different things. The main hormone insulin is responsible for changing carbs into clogged arteries and fat on your body. If you keep insulin low by keeping carbs low - the dietary fat will not clog the arteries nor will it end up making you fat. Insulin is very inflammatory and can also start the progressive inflammatory process of your arteries. Hey guys, dr. berg here and in this video we are going to talk about will doing a high fat ketogenic diet clog your arteries. Just from the pure observation of eating more fat and a fatty clogged artery, it sounds logical that if you were to eat fat you are going to get a clogged artery. It sounds logical that you would eat more fat and then get more fat in your body but it is not how it works in the body because in the body there is a various hormones that tell certain types of calories what to convert into and the hormone that tells the body whether to clog or clean out the artery really is called insulin. Insulin is like the switch that converts fat into the body storage and also clogs arteries. Insulin is a very inflammatory hormone if you have too much of it you could get a lot of inflammation which can set you up for a whole series of events from the body starts healing the inflammation in the arteries with a combination of the cholesterols, calcium and fibrous kind of a connective tissue to form a little bit of a clot. What started that would be the high levels of insulin, not necessarily consuming cholesterol. Cholesterol is made by almost every single cell in the body. Your body makes about 3,000mg of cholesterol every single day. 3,000mg of cholesterol is equal to 300 strips of bacon, about a pound of butter or 14 eggs. Your body makes a lot of cholesterol. When you consume more fat, your body just makes less. That’s how it works. What really creates this clogged arteries is high levels of insulin by consuming too many carbohydrates. If you were to cut your carbohydrates down, like the breads, pasta, cereal, crackers, things like that, and sugar. If you would cut that down, you would notice your cholesterol would go way down. Also your triglycerides and your bad cholesterol will go way down. If you were to increase the sugar and the insulin, your cholesterol goes up and you should even experiment yourself to see if this is true for you. But what I want to give you is I have a little mini course that is very quick and you can probably get it done in maybe 20 minutes on ketosis to give you the basics. Let’s take a look at all the things that happen and all the barriers that you might run in to. I mainly created this for new people just so they could see everything together. I know it looks complex but let’s just kind of go through it. Here you are having breakfast, lunch and dinner, don’t forget about the snacks. This is for the average person, you are pretty much grazing the whole day. You have belly fat, fatigue, memory problems, lack of focus, cravings, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression and diabetes but other than that you are doing pretty good. The common denominator of all this, high levels of insulin. You have insulin resistance which is causing high levels of insulin. That’s what creating all of this symptoms. These symptoms are the tip of the iceberg, the insulin is the iceberg. We have to fix the insulin and the way we do it is through keto because it is going to lower the carb and reduce the insulin. Intermittent Fasting works because you are going to eat less frequent(not the amount) because every time you eat, you trigger insulin. The combination of Keto and Intermittent Fasting works really good to lower insulin. In between day 1 and day 3, you may go through the transition period which you are going to feel some symptoms of low blood sugar and that would be lightheadedness, hunger and cravings and maybe a headache. You have to realize it is temporary and if you give up right here, you are going to lose the benefits of all the great things down the road. Just realize that it is going to happen and just hang in there but you can actually increase potassium and B vitamins to make it even smoother. *Other effects from ketogenic diet can be easily remedied by adding more minerals (potassium) and B-vitamins (nutritional yeast). *If you cheat on this program, you will notice the next day will be off in a way you are hungrier and craving more - just get back on the wagon. When you start going to 2 meals and then 1 meal, some people really stuff themselves, and overload the digestive system, esp. with too much fat and they end up with right shoulder pain and bloating - this is too much for the gallbladder. *Also add lemon juice and apple cider vinegar to your liquid to help prevent the buildup of uric acid (gout, kidney stones) for those who are susceptible. *It is not true that your thyroid needs carbs. In fact, your body will be more efficient on this plan and the need for thyroid hormones will be less - this is normal. *Your cholesterol may go up temporarily because your fat cells release it - this is what we want. Just stick with it and things will come down eventually. *Lastly, when you eventually get into autophagy (cellular recycling), you're cognitive function, memory, skin, weight, heart will all greatly benefit and plus - YOU'LL BE SAVING MONEY - from not eating so frequency - these are all the reasons WHY it's worth it. CHIA SEED PUDDING:  •2 cups unsweetened almond milk or coconut milk. •1 tbsp unsweetened coconut flakes •1 tsp pure vanilla extract. •1/3 cup chia seeds •stevia to taste *Add chia seeds, nut milk, vanilla, and stevia to mason jar, shake, and place in fridge for 2-12 hours.
