There are about 7,000 languages spoken around the world -- and they all have different sounds, vocabularies and structures. But do they shape the way we think? Cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky shares examples of language -- from an Aboriginal community in Australia that uses cardinal directions instead of left and right to the multiple words for blue in Russian -- that suggest the answer is a resounding yes. "The beauty of linguistic diversity is that it reveals to us just how ingenious and how flexible the human mind is," Boroditsky says. "Human minds have invented not one cognitive universe, but 7,000." FILM DESCRIPTION: The world's least-employable heavy metal guitarist is entrusted with the minds of upstate New York's best and brightest in this fish-out-of-water comedy. Jack Black plays Dewey Finn, axe-bearer for a fitfully successful bar band determined to win a regional battle-of-the-bands competition. There's only one thing standing in their way: the self-indulgent solos and crowd-diving antics of their "embarrassing" lead guitarist. When his band votes him out in favor of a would-be rock god, Dewey has to make the rent somehow, and after intercepting a call for his substitute-teacher roomie Ned (Mike White), the pot-bellied slacker finds himself in front of a class of elite elementary school students. At a loss for a lesson plan, Dewey takes offense at the pre-teen prodigies' staid musical regimen and makes it his goal to preach them the gospel of The Who, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC -- with the ulterior motive of getting them to compete against his former band for a cash prize. But no matter how willing his pupils, Dewey runs up against the consternation of the school's stern headmistress Principal Mullins (Joan Cusack), the battle-of-the-bands' promoter (Frank Whaley), and not least, his identity-deprived roomie Ned. After completing an A.S. in electronics engineering technology at Honolulu Community College (HCC), Lester realized it was the field of human potential that most excited him. He pursued his education at the University of Hawaii Manoa (UHM) earning his B.S. in Human Development and later returned to complete a M.Ed. in Counseling and Guidance. After moving to Las Vegas he continued his studies taking doctoral classes in Education Psychology at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) with an emphasis in self efficacy in creativity. In addition to his formal education, Lester taught English as a Second Language (ESL) in Osaka and Matsuyama, Japan while studying Japanese. After his two-year contract expired he travelled for the next sixteen months on a bicycle through Asia, Europe and North America. During the winter of his travels he secured a long-term volunteer position at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) near Machynlleth, Wales, where he served as an organic farmer and carpenter for nine months. Lester's curiosity has contributed to his effectiveness as a career counselor and mentor. He explored nine majors as an undergraduate student and has worked in six career fields: hospitality, recreation, construction, retail management, counseling and teaching. He expresses his creative spirit through sculpting stone and clay, making pottery, sketching, landscape design and home renovation. His giving nature is exemplified through countless hours working with youth groups and young adults in faith-based and community organizations. Currently, Professor Tanaka teaches the College Success course at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) and serves on a select number of departmental and college-wide committees. Starting at CSN as an adjunct instructor, he joined the college full-time in 1992 to oversee Tutorial Services in the Developmental Lab, and later co-developed the International Student Program, and served as a college counselor before coming home to teaching full-time. Lester believes that each of us must take a proactive role in our own learning while acknowledging the inadequacies of the current model of education. He states, "To be truly effective we, as educators, must be willing to acknowledge emerging paradigms of instruction and learning while holding learners to the highest of standards." Lester has been described as an "out-of-the-box" thinker, willing to take risks, while never losing sight of the big picture. He emphasizes that we all have our own answers, and we discover them though fearless self- examination and deep listening. Connecting with students in an authentic way in order to support them in living their most meaningful and fulfilling lives is the highest calling of this educator.

The 2017 Clarendon Lectures in Management were delivered by Herminia Ibarra, Professor of Organisational Behaviour and Charles Handy Chair in Organisational Behaviour at London Business School. Ibarra used this lecture to turn an identity and transition lens to the apparently intractable problem of ensuring a better gender balance at the top of organisations. She said that we are bombarded with images that suggest that women do not look like leaders. There is even a ‘bronze ceiling’ – a survey of commemorative statues in the UK revealed that women are only featured in statues if they are naked muses, royalty (mainly Queen Victoria), or the mother of God. ‘Wherever we look, we are confronted with the issue that women are not the prototypes of leaders. In business, even though women are entering most industries in large numbers, often 50-50, there is still a big drop-off in the middle.’ Ibarra said that the three approaches for making transitions into more senior roles – redefining work to be more strategic, managing networks, and being more playful with a sense of self – correspond almost exactly to the elements that come together to form second generation bias against women. This is not explicit discrimination – but that ‘something in the water that you can’t quite put your finger on’.

This Khutbah was recorded on October 6th, 2017 at the Euless Campus The story of Prophet Musa (PBUH) and Al-Khidr in Surah Al-Kahf is a source of profound guidance for situations many of us find ourselves facing in our daily lives. It begins with Prophet Musa’s (PBUH) relentless commitment to learning despite the fact that Allah had bestowed so much knowledge on him that his disciples were even called the People of the Book. Although Allah spoke directly to Prophet Musa (PBUH), He decided that these particular lessons will not be prescribed. They must be experienced. In their journey, Prophet Musa (PBUH) watches impatiently as the wise man, Al-Khidr, damages a ship, kills a child and builds a wall without asking for compensation. His actions shock Prophet Musa (PBUH) until Al-Khidr explains Allah’s merciful design. No matter how difficult our trials are in this world, we must have faith that Allah’s plan is always for the best.

For Students: http://l.prageru.com/29SgPaX JOIN our Educators Network! http://l.prageru.com/2c8vsff Script: Once upon a time, every student of history – and that meant pretty much everyone with a high school education – knew this: The Democratic Party was the party of slavery and Jim Crow, and the Republican Party was the party of emancipation and racial integration. Democrats were the Confederacy and Republicans were the Union. Jim Crow Democrats were dominant in the South and socially tolerant Republicans were dominant in the North. But then, in the 1960s and 70s, everything supposedly flipped: suddenly the Republicans became the racists and the Democrats became the champions of civil rights. Fabricated by left-leaning academic elites and journalists, the story went like this: Republicans couldn't win a national election by appealing to the better nature of the country; they could only win by appealing to the worst. Attributed to Richard Nixon, the media's all-purpose bad guy, this came to be known as "The Southern Strategy." It was very simple. Win elections by winning the South. And to win the South, appeal to racists. So, the Republicans, the party of Lincoln, were to now be labeled the party of rednecks. But this story of the two parties switching identities is a myth. In fact, it's three myths wrapped into one false narrative. Let's take a brief look at each myth in turn. Myth Number One: In order to be competitive in the South, Republicans started to pander to white racists in the 1960s. Fact: Republicans actually became competitive in the South as early as 1928, when Republican Herbert Hoover won over 47 percent of the South's popular vote against Democrat Al Smith. In 1952, Republican President Dwight Eisenhower won the southern states of Tennessee, Florida and Virginia. And in 1956, he picked up Louisiana, Kentucky and West Virginia, too. And that was after he supported the Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education that desegregated public schools; and after he sent the 101st Airborne to Little Rock Central High School to enforce integration. Myth Number Two: Southern Democrats, angry with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, switched parties. Fact: Of the 21 Democratic senators who opposed the Civil Rights Act, just one became a Republican. The other 20 continued to be elected as Democrats, or were replaced by other Democrats. On average, those 20 seats didn't go Republican for another two-and-a-half decades. Myth Number Three: Since the implementation of the Southern Strategy, the Republicans have dominated the South. Fact: Richard Nixon, the man who is often credited with creating the Southern Strategy, lost the Deep South in 1968. In contrast, Democrat Jimmy Carter nearly swept the region in 1976 - 12 years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964. And in 1992, over 28 years later, Democrat Bill Clinton won Georgia, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia. The truth is, Republicans didn't hold a majority of southern congressional seats until 1994, 30 years after the Civil Rights Act. THIS VIDEOS LESSON PLAN /MATERIAL: http://www.andrewwasson.com/recent_posts/2013/01_january/jan_2013.php#jan18 Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I'd like to get chromatic concepts into my soloing. I mostly enjoy early rock and R & B styles and that's what I want to solo on. Do you have any suggestions for incorporating chromatic lines around the basic diatonic scales and modes? I hope you can help and thanks for all that you do online! Keith D. -- Ann Arbor, MI. USA A: When it comes to blending diatonic scales and modes together with chromatic lines in mainstream styles like; rock, pop and R & B music, one has to be somewhat careful of any potential loss of the individual identity of the style. If we were playing over traditional Jazz changes, or perhaps Jazz-Fusion music where the lines disconnect themselves from the melodic flow and cause the melody to react in what musicians will often describe as an, "Outside melodic line," that is quite a different effect with chromatic use as opposed to a; rock, pop or R&B application where we are after the use of chromatic lines which will actually retain the individual identity of the style. In other words, generally speaking we don't want an outside Jazz-Fusion sound inside of a mainstream rock or pop song! In the video I run through a few examples of how you can better blend the chromatic effect around the diatonic scales while retaining the individual identity of; rock and pop / R&B or any other Mainstream Contemporary musical style. I'M NEW HERE a picture book by Anne Sibley O'Brien (Charlesbridge Publishing) http://www.annesibleyobrien.com/index.php/asob/books BOOK DESCRIPTION Maria is from Guatemala, Jin is from Korea, and Fatima is from Somalia. All three are new to their American elementary school, and each has trouble speaking, writing, and sharing ideas in English. Through self-determination and with encouragement from their peers and teachers, the students learn to feel confident and comfortable in their new school without losing a sense of their home country, language, and identity. Young readers from all backgrounds will appreciate this touching story about the assimilation of three immigrant students in a supportive school community. Anne Sibley O’Brien is one of the founders of I’m Your Neighbor, an organization that promotes children’s literature featuring “new arrival” cultures. As the rate of immigration to the United States increases, topics related to immigration are increasingly more important in the classroom and home. I’m New Here demonstrates how our global community can work together and build a home for all.

A Thousand Suns tells the story of the Gamo Highlands of the African Rift Valley and the unique worldview held by the people of the region. This isolated area has remained remarkably intact both biologically and culturally. It is one of the most densely populated rural regions of Africa yet its people have been farming sustainably for 10,000 years. Shot in Ethiopia, New York and Kenya, the film explores the modern world's untenable sense of separation from and superiority over nature and how the interconnected worldview of the Gamo people is fundamental in achieving long-term sustainability, both in the region and beyond. Many see their salvation as a fixed point in time; saved by a decision made in faith at a certain point in our life. This thinking has rendered the water baptism and the baptism of the Holy Spirit unnecessary for salvation, since salvation is already attained. The Bible however clearly lays the emphasis on salvation being in the future. Using the clear picture of the exodus of Israel out of Egypt the Bible shows us that even though there was a point of salvation when Israel was taken out of Egypt (the picture of the sinful world), it was not the fulfillment of their salvation which would be the arrival in the promised land (the picture of our eternal salvation). Its only when they went through the red sea they where delivered from the armies of Egypt taking them back to slavery (a picture of the power of sin). And then even after being saved through the red sea (the picture of our water baptism) only a few of the first generation of Israel where allowed to enter the promised land. Only a few lived in obedience to the law given on mount Sinai (the picture of the filling of the Holy Spirit) and the rest never attained their destination. This shows us that salvation is more then a “one time decision” but that its about the end of your walk, obtaining salvation if we continue in the faith. Living in obedience to the will of God that is now written on our heart by the Holy Spirit, bearing fruit to righteousness (Luke 8:11-15). In this biblical view of salvation the water baptism and the filling of the Holy Spirit both become essential parts to salvation together with repentance and faith to Christ for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus says “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin” (John 8: 34) and Paul says “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23). So we all are slaves of sin. Furthermore the Bible teaches that living in sin will eventually lead to eternal death and loss of our precious salvation! (2Pet 2:20, Rom 6:16, Matt 7:23, John 15:2, Rom 8:13, Eph 5:5, 1Cor 6:9). Therefore it is of vital necessity to our salvation that we are set free of this slavery to sin. The good news is that there is freedom! Romans 6 teaches that we die to sin in water baptism “that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin”. Through water baptism we are no longer slaves of sin (slaves of the flesh keeping us bound to sin). Through baptism the slavery is broken and we are now given the choice to either “obey sin (the flesh), leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness” (Rom 6:16). Through baptism we are no longer a slave to sin and the temptations of the flesh, however the temptations of the flesh have not disappeared. Only the slavery to the flesh has been broken. We still live in a sinful world and the body (the flesh) still has its lusts to trying to tempt us to sin. For this reason God has promised us the Holy Spirit. The Bible teaches that overcoming these temptation and living righteously by your own strength is impossible. This is why the old testament law was given by God to give us the knowledge of sin (Rom 7:7) and to show us the need of a savior (Gal 3:24). The old testament law was given to show us that it is impossible to become righteousness through our own strength and self righteous works. This means that not only our unrighteous deeds fall short but also our self righteous deeds fall short to the righteousness of God, leaving us with empty hands in regard to living righteously. For this very reason God our savior want to give us His ability to begin walking in His righteousness. For God did not leave us empty-handed, but by the filling of Holy Spirit He has written the will of God on our heart, giving us a new nature and new desires to walk on the road of sanctification (Gal 5:16). This is part of our walk of salvation “For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God” Rom 8:13-14. It is only by the Spirit that we can overcome the temptations of the world. It is only by the Spirit that we can be sanctified, This is the good news, it is no longer through our own strength or good works that we work for salvation, but by the leading of His Spirit given to us leading us to salvation. So we see that the forgiveness of sin is paid by the Blood of Jesus in repentance through faith. We are set free from sin and the slavery to sin through the water baptism and we can now live a new life continuing towards freedom of sin though the filling of the Holy Spirit, leading to eternal life. Tony Robbins: How to Understand Yourself (Tony Robbins Motivation) Tony is very high energy and passionate about what he says. He knows his subject so well that I suspect he can easily riff off the top of his head about almost any personal development topic. Anyone who has spent some time immersed in an industry who is a well practiced or natural speaker will know what this is like. It certainly helps that the man himself is larger than life, but since I’m studying audio materials and not experiencing a live workshop, the fact that Tony can keep your attention, transfer ideas and get you very excited about improving your life, is significant. Tony’s teachings are incredibly relevant to the every day man or woman. In terms of practical application I haven’t come across any other teacher who is able to communicate so well to “normal” people leading “normal” lives. His ideas are instantly applied and you don’t need to be super-intelligent, philosophical or a “deep” person to understand what he says. I listen to Tony while driving my car. I can honestly say that a daily dose of Tony is like a vitamin for the mind. You listen to him, feel inspired, are reminded what kind of person you want to be and reinvigorate your commitment to hold yourself accountable to this ideal. It’s a simple idea, but like swapping out junk food for healthy vegetables can make your physical health so much better, as can swapping exercise for time spent on the couch watching TV, I absolutely believe that filling your mind with personal development materials instead of reading about the latest tragedy in the news or listening to negative people, will transform your life. How can you not improve your life if you have this crazy giant of a man injecting you with positive change juice every day? Lessons and Actions Tony does a great job of mixing strategic discussion with practical ideas. I’m far and away a strategic person, which means I relish talking about all aspects of a concept to varying degrees of depth. The risk with this, especially for people who are not natural action takers, is that a subject may be talked about a whole lot, but not much real change happens. I can tell Tony also likes to have a depth of knowledge about a subject, but more than anything wants his listeners to earn a result. Tangible outcomes are what matter, not just inspiring words, so Tony includes actionable steps in all his materials. You either participate with Tony while he takes you through the workshop or take the steps after you finish listening – well at least those who are looking to create real change do! One of the most common feedback I receive about my teaching materials, especially my Blog Mastermind lessons, is the real applicability of what I lay out. I tell the story, explain the strategy and end with the steps. That’s a simple formula for good teaching materials. Tony uses this process over and over again throughout his audios. What Did I Learn? In my case, most of the actions I take as a result of listening to Tony is adjustment to my self talk and thus my emotional state. I’ve spent the last ten years learning that what I think impacts how I feel, which impacts how I experience life. All of this goes on inside, but of course your internal state is eventually reflected in your external environment because you make decisions based on how you are thinking and feeling. Tony is not the first person to iterate that you are what you believe you are, and that is 100% in your control. It’s been taught over and over and over to me and now forms the core structure of my belief system. It’s amazing how powerful this is when you have it stated to you over and over again in different formats by different people. I’ve heard the message in movies, books, songs, from friends, teachers, family, seen countless examples and experienced a plethora of my own situations to reinforce this belief. Tony, in a lot of ways is the final brush and polish, completing the picture that is now part of my personality. His practical implementation makes it incredibly easy to apply to my own life. I’ve been reprogramming myself for years, but it never hurts to hear sound advice more than once, or twice or ten times. In fact it’s necessary for that much repetition if you want to make it truly a part of who you are. The real profound change that has occurred in me is the speed of adjustment to how I perceive things. I am so in tune to my emotional state that I can very easily acknowledge a feeling, discover it’s root cause and then course correct on the fly. I can spot erroneous rationalizations and replace them with beliefs that are based on the type of person I want to become almost instantaneously. In the past I would have been stuck in negative patterns, poor interpretations and ultimately self-defeating thought-feeling-action loops that led to more of what I didn’t want.

This week, John i s talking about one of his least favorite novels, The Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Lord of the Flies is a novel of ideas, and John doesn't agree with the central idea of the novel, which diminished his enjoyment of the book. The central idea of the book is that everyone has evil in their hearts. Which we don't necessarily agree with. That said, it's a good read, and worth reading. *** Crash Course is on Patreon! He is involved in numerous research projects nationally and internationally with a focus on motivation and behaviour change. He is currently leading projects in drugs in sport, promoting physical activity and healthy diet, understanding the mechanisms of willpower and self-control, and reducing binge drinking and the prevalence of smoking. At the highest level, athletes are well-matched in terms of their physical abilities, conditioning, and skill level. But often that is not enough to win and perform on the biggest of stages like the Olympic games. Developing strategies and techniques to get athletes minds in the best possible condition for optimal performance is increasingly important for sports teams and coaches. Martin will provide an overview of the kinds of techniques that elite athletes use to prepare psychologically for their sport, give details of the scientific research into these techniques and how they work, and how the techniques might be used by competitive athetes and coaches to maximise performance. ------------------ TEDxPerth 2012 took place on Saturday 8 December 2012 at the Octagon Theatre at the University of Western Australia. The School of Rock movie clips: http://j.mp/1J9Y3H1 BUY THE MOVIE: http://amzn.to/uylb3E Don't miss the HOTTEST NEW TRAILERS: http://bit.ly/1u2y6pr CLIP DESCRIPTION: Dewey (Jack Black) teaches Zack (Joey Gaydos) the rock guitar stance and hands out musical homework for the students to study. FILM DESCRIPTION: The world's least-employable heavy metal guitarist is entrusted with the minds of upstate New York's best and brightest in this fish-out-of-water comedy.
