Long Term Effects of Anti-Depressant Medication with Robert Whitaker

15:40
Schizophrenics in the United States currently fare worse than patients in the world’s poorest countries. Medical journalist Robert Whitaker argues that modern treatments for the severely mentally ill are just old medicine in new bottles, and that we as a society are deeply deluded about their efficacy. The widespread use of lobotomies in the 1920's and 1930's gave way in the 1950's to electroshock and a wave of new drugs. In what is perhaps Robert Whitaker’s most damning revelation, he examines how drug companies in the 1980's and 1990's skewed their studies to prove that new anti-psychotic drugs were more effective than the old, while keeping patients in the dark about dangerous side effects. Robert Whitaker raises important questions about our obligations to the mad, the meaning of “insanity,” and what we value most about the human mind. In this video, author and depression counselor Douglas Bloch talks about akathisia--an intense inner restlessness brought on as a side effect of medication. Symptoms include anxiety, agitation and a compulsion to move or to walk about. He also shows you how you can take medication in a way that greatly reduces the risk of akathisia. Life after antidepressants/negative side effects

21:04
My experiences being on antidepressants 5 years in my early 30s and 3 years in my early 20s -and now 1 year off -putting together the negative side effects. Therapy in the Finnish social security by a licenced psychologist. First time stopping the antidepressants independently. Second time in therapy with much better results. My opinion: - Antidepressants can be useful - Lowering the dose should be done very slowly - never finish quickly. -Best done with the help of a professional/in therapy -Antidepressants most useful together with therapy - With low levels of anxiety, drugs do more harm than good This is my first video for a long time so sorry if its not the most cohesive piece ever. :)

Antidepressants Make it Harder to Empathize, Harder to Climax, and Harder to Cry.

06:51
Dr. Julie Holland argues that women are designed by nature to be dynamic and sensitive – women are moody and that is a good thing. Yet millions of women are medicating away their emotions because we are out of sync with our own bodies and we are told that moodiness is a problem to be fixed. One in four women takes a psychiatric drug. If you add sleeping pills to the mix the statistics become higher. Overprescribed medications can have far-reaching consequences for women in many areas of our lives: sex, relationships, sleep, eating, focus, balance, and aging. Dr. Holland's newest book is titled Moody Bitches: The Truth About the Drugs You’re Taking, the Sleep You’re Missing, the Sex You’re Not Having and What’s Really Making You Crazy. Read more at BigThink.com: http://goo.gl/O8uR Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript: The main kind of antidepressant that is the most popularly prescribed are the SSRIs and these are medicines that increase serotonin transmission. And when you start to push on the doses of these SSRIs you start to lose some sort of quintessential feminine things. First of all it becomes much hard to climax and it becomes much, much harder to cry. But you also see decreases in empathy, in sensitivity, in passion. The simple way of thinking about an SSRI is that you have two brain cells and one is a pitcher and one is a catcher. So pitch, catch. Pitch, catch. So this nerve cell is throwing serotonin across and this one is catching it. What the medicines do is they block the recycling back into the pitcher. So, you know, I’m throwing, I’m throwing, some of this gets caught, some of it gets dropped. It just doesn’t get over there but I’ll suck it back in and try again. So if you block the recycling more is in the middle to get across. So there’s more, you know, the space between the nerve cells is called the synapse. If you block the recycling of the serotonin into the releasing cell more is available for the catching cell. So it ends up enhancing the transmission. How enhanced serotonergic transmission translates into feeling better and feeling less anxious is much more complicated. But, you know, the simplistic way to think about it is that if you have higher levels of serotonin, if your transmission is better you will be more relaxed and more happy. It’s a little easier to smile. It’s a little harder to cry. So, you know, I’ve had patients come to me and say, you know, I’ve tried antidepressants before but they always made me feel like a zombie or they didn’t make me feel like myself. Or I had a patient who said like I cut my finger and I looked down and I saw that it was bleeding and I saw that it was my blood but I didn’t really feel like connected to my finger or the blood. You know, things like that that are really, really worrisome. Or I’ve had patients say, you know, I was in this situation where I knew I should be crying and I couldn’t cry. And, you know, I felt terrible that I couldn’t express that emotion to bond with my friend or something like that. So these antidepressants do scale back a lot of expression of emotion and feeling emotion even sort of thinking emotional thoughts. If you’re terribly depressed and you need antidepressants to get out of bed and function and go to work I get it. That’s one thing. But what I’m worried about is more and more women deciding to go on antidepressants because their friends are doing it and that’s what’s, you know, more and more women who are at work are taking these SSRIs so that they cannot cry, not get flustered, keep going forward. You know I think it jives with this sort of forward momentum agenda that so many of us have and especially in the workplace. But, you know, I would say at what cost? You know it is true that SSRIs can help you get ahead and there have been really interesting animal studies where, you know, the primates who are on SSRIs ascended up the dominance hierarchy. And the ones who became dominated over got stressed out and had lower serotonin levels. So there does seem to be some component of serotonin affecting dominance hierarchies and, you know, the ability to move ahead or to lean in. So I totally get that there are advantages to being on an SSRI in the workplace. But, you’re going to miss out on knowing what’s right because you feel it or being hurt by what somebody said and showing them that you’re hurt. And so that person can learn that their behavior has emotional consequences for other people. So and it changes the whole sort of tone of the workplace. There’s going to be less accountability and less sort of calling people on their misbehavior if you’re not even feeling that anyone misbehaved. [TRANSCRIPT TRUNCATED]

Seroxat = Permanent brain damage ( and body )

05:31
I was on Seroxat for 13 years. I could never get off it because I was addicted to it and the withdrawal effects are horrendous. While on it, I always had delayed orgasm but, in 2008, I became 100% sexually dysfunctional. At the same time, I became totally emotionally numb leaving me unable to feel love for anyone or anything. A doctor finally whipped me off it in 2010 and since then, I have chronic insomnia. I never in my life had these problems prior to taking Seroxat. I feel nothing for the people I once loved. I am unable to feel love for anyone. Being on Seroxat for 13 years has destroyed my brain and body and you will see just how in this video. I have no fight or flight responses and never experience rushes of adrenalin or anxiety. My adrenal glands are destroyed. You can try telling this to your doctor if you feel you too are affected in this way but, not everyone is on Seroxat for 13 years and the cases are few. We are a minority. Try telling your family and they may not believe you. They will tell you your depression has come back or worse things. It seems too far-fetched but, I have the evidence for you here. It took me a while to get it together. Please keep in mind that I was on it for 13 years. I am unable to feel love etc because my serotonin and dopamine have been depleted. I cannot sleep because my circadian rhythm is affected due to lack of serotonin etc. I was like this first and then found the information - not the other way round. No history of schizophrenia etc....was put on Seroxat at age 19 after a friend was involved in a car accident. Now off Seroxat and severely brain damaged. Since 2008, I can't experience emotions, climax or sleep. My life is destroyed. I told an "experienced psychiatrist" about this who is pro ssri drugs and he suggested Trazadone....This is what Trazadone does to the brain : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Receptor_antagonist ( Wikipedia - This is what Trazadone does to the brain..... ) "Because antagonists often disrupt the normal connectivity between neurons, their long-term, chronic use has been linked to neuronal death and very strong antagonists can be considered to be toxic" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDw7NjuJGy4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_XFfdkJXnM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-6pmsVOe3g http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axmYpSH361U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65c8wkB3WnI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circadian_rhythm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melatonin fluvoxamine maleate (Luvox, Faverin) paroxetine (Paxil, Seroxat, Aropax, Deroxat, Paroxat) Food and Drug Administration truthman bbc panorama amygdala nucleus accumbens ventral tegmental area (VTA) cerebellum pituitary gland cat scan pet periaqueductal gray PAG hippocampus delayed orgasm Positron emission tomography Magnetic resonance imaging X-ray computed tomography, also Computed tomography (CT scan) or Computed axial tomography (CAT scan) cocaine 3D The ACTH stimulation test (also called the cosyntropin test, tetracosactide test or Synacthen test CORTOSOL saliva test testing Functional magnetic resonance imaging or functional fmri Deep brain stimulation (DBS) Norepinephrine (INN) (abbreviated norepi or NE), or noradrenaline (BAN) (abbreviated NA, NAd, or norad), is a catecholamine a hormone and a neurotransmitter.[3] norepinephrine noradrenergic. Feel Depressed or Anxious? Talk to Someone Now http://www.tryonlinetherapy.com/depressiontoexpression/ Antidepressants do hold their fair share of side effects. Let's be honest, anti-depressants have created some pretty serious horror stories in the past and continue to be scary option for those who suffer from anxiety or depression. I get it, taking antidepressants should be a decision you are comfortable with first. How I got off Paxil quickly

After being "paxil free" for 2 weeks I decided to share how I did it. Ween with very little withdrawal. Disclaimer: Always consult with a medical professional before stopping ANY medication!!!! Withdrawals going cold turkey were very difficult to deal with. Tried twice and it was terrible. Alternatively, my weening process took about 2 months, and it was not all that bad! This is an explanation of how I succeeded, not on how YOU should do it. Comment with any questions or clarifications on the video. Share with others who could benefit in knowing it is possible to be paxil free.

Antidepressant Withdrawal: Nerve Damage and Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD)

21:39
Do Antidepressant drugs cause nerve damage and long term sexual dysfunction? Is this damage permanent? The narrator provides his personal opinion on this subject, but is not a medical doctor and is not providing medical advice. Always consult with your doctor before taking these drugs and before making any changes to your medical paradigm. Please leave comments below and let us know what you think of the information provided in this video. In this video, the narrator talks about some of the misconceptions that exist in regard SSRI and SNRI (antidepressant) - like MOAI, and TCA classes as well - withdrawal. We propose a theory consistent with Dr. David Healy that unlike typical drug withdrawal that is related to receptor up and down regulation - antidepressants and antipsycotic medications are actually neurotoxic and cause long lasting damage to neurons in some fraction of those who consume these drugs for more than a couple of weeks. How to Lose Weight While Taking Antidepressants?

08:51
Losing weight is difficult as it is but it is even bigger challenge when you are taking antidepressants. Discover why Dr. Sam Robbins, health expert, recommends Lean Optimizer™, as one of the solutions for weight loss while taking Antidepressants. http://drsam.co/yt/WhileTakingAntidepressants-LO ************************** How to Lose Weight While Taking Antidepressants? ********************** Losing weight is never fun and for most of us, it is not easy especially as we get older. Losing weight is difficult as it is but it is even bigger challenge when you are taking antidepressants. Moreover, the reason is due to your change in hormones. Over the years, I have discovered TWO main reasons for the weight gain from use of antidepressants: The first is the most commonly prescribe antidepressants, SSRIs - such as Prozac, Lexapro, Paxil, Zoloft - they work by increasing serotonin, which helps regulate your appetite. So typically, antidepressant users start eating more because their appetite has increased which is the initial and primary cause of weight gain. Secondly, there is another phenomenon that I have noticed over the years: With people who swear they are not eating more and yet, they still gain weight. After doing lots of different blood work I have noticed a change in metabolic markers: One of them being lowered thyroid production as well as a change adrenal function such as higher cortisol levels (stress hormone) and lower adrenal production. Both are leading to slower metabolism and faster weight gain. As you can see, hormones really do control everything, throw in aging and now things get a bit more challenging. In this video, I am going to give you proven solutions that will help reduce your appetite and maximize your fat loss. So, do not worry – it is not your fault. There is hope! Wellbutrin

19:38
Wellbutrin, more commonly prescribed as the generic Bupropion, remains a widely prescribed therapy for depression. Popular in part because it may lead to less weight gain and sexual dysfunction compared to other antidepressants, it probably lacks significant major therapeutic advantages versus its competitors. While Bupropion may provide some relief, it neither cures depression nor completely eliminates the symptoms.

Lexapro

19:17
Lexapro or escitalopram may treat depression and anxiety. Actually Lexapro contains the same active component as Celexa. Aggressive marketing promoting the drug as superior to other available options succeeded in boosting total sales well in excess of $14 billion. Unfortunately studies fail to show Lexapro offers any unique advantages over other similar SSRIs such as Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft. Recent investigations suggest not only are antidepressants overprescribed but their effectiveness compared to inactive placebo therapy remains subject to debate.

I lost 25 lbs in 4 weeks and was in full panic or near panic for 8 weeks straight mixed with the darkest most painful depression I cold have ever imagined. I immediately could not work and had to move in with my parents who along with many siblings and friends had to watch me 24/7 as I was so suicidal. I was eventually hospitalized. Getting through each day seemed truly unbearable and I knew I would surely die. I have been put on many many different SSRI's SNRI's Tricyclics, Mood stabilizers, anti psychotics, holistic meds, acupuncture and even a form of shock therapy called RTMS. I barely saw any improvement in my condition for a full year. It was decided I had treatment resistant depression and I spent nearly every moment in tears. Weeks after starting my newest round of medications (Seroquel & Nortryptaline) as a last ditch effort, I had my blood drawn for possible hormone imbalances and my Testosterone levels came back 200 ng/Dl and 150 ng/Dl. The average 25 year old male has 750 ng/Dl. With this discovery I for the first time had any type of possible explanation as to why I was not getting better and why I might be so so sick. The symptoms of such Low T are very similar to those of major depression. I started Testosterone replacement therapy soon after and have been checking in with the world and documenting my experience with treatment as well as giving my insight and perspective on various topics of mental health. I am blessed to say that I have slowly, over the last 4 years, been improving and becoming more stable which I never thought to be possible. My low T manifested itself in the form of Major depression, anxiety, and depersonalization/ derealization for over a year. Gaining some mental stability back is nothing short of a miracle as I was near death for what felt like forever. I do not consider myself to be totally healed yet but I am closer now then ever before and aim to use what I have been through to help or at least offer support to others in need I was able to successfully come off my Seroquel and Pamelor. I work out all the time as a part of my mental health recovery!!! Weight training and all kinds of cardio rule much of my free time!

Most Common Antidepressant Withdrawal Symptoms!

11:51
Here are some of the most common antidepressant withdrawal symptoms! If you have any type of anxiety disorder such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, health anxiety or hypochondria, social anxiety, phobias, depression etc etc, then you have either take antidepressants or thought about taking them in the past. First I suggest always trying to overcome depression and anxiety the natural way. These antidepressant withdrawal symptoms usually start 1-2 days after quitting and can last a few weeks. You can experience anxiety, irritability, tiredness, fatigue, brain zaps, flu like symptoms, insomnia, nightmares, headaches, and a return of depression or suicidal thoughts. Make sure you talk to your doctor before quitting any drug. Tapering off of antidepressants can reduce the withdrawal symptoms. Tips for anxiety *** So how do we overcome anxiety or beat anxiety? These are tips that you should be trying every single day to stop your anxiety! Dont skip any days and remember that there will still be bad days. Its how we handle the bad days, that determines how we progress in our mental health. Make sure you are exercising daily, eating healthy, keeping a journal, taking a multivitamin, practicing meditation in the mornings and evenings, practicing cbt, keep counseling or therapy as an option, watch positive affirmation and asmr videos, join online support groups, and most importantly do this everyday and dont give up! Sertraline (Zoloft): What You Need To Know

10:10
Sertraline is an antidepressant in the SSRI class. It’s used for depression, anxiety, panic disorder, OCD, and a number of other conditions. After entering the market in the early 1990s, sertraline became one of the most popular antidepressants. The drug is used in adults, adolescents, and children. There might be greater concerns and lower efficacy in young people. Making A Killing: The Untold Story Of Psychotropic Drugging (Documentary)

01:34:43
This is a Documentary and will provide the facts about psychotropic drugs and the huge profits they create for the pharmaceutical industry. These drugs are not safe and have not been on the market long enough to provide sufficient long term studies regarding their effects. These drugs do cause addiction, however most "doctors" would call this dependence because you do not have to take an increasing dose over time. They are completely fine with you being addicted to the same amount of any given drug on a daily basis. Over half of the people that commit suicide in the United States are prescribed to psychotropic drugs. (Ex: Paxil (Paroxetine), Zoloft (Sertraline), Prozac, Wellbutrin (Bupropion), Effexor, Seroquil, Ultram (Tramadol), etc.) Save Money, Get Healthy And Create Wealth With Youngevity! How Do Antidepressants And Antipsychotic Drugs Change Your Brain? with Robert Whitaker

07:48
Passionate believers in whole food plant based diets, no chemicals, minimal pharmaceutical drugs, no GMO's. Fighting to stop climate change and extinction.

Zoloft (Sertraline): Quitting Cold Turkey

12:53
I've seen a lot of other videos on the topic of quitting the SSRI antidepressant Zoloft (sertraline) but not many on successfully getting through the withdrawals and coming through the other side safely. I hope this video is reassuring to anyone out there who is going through the same dilemma. If you have any question please feel free to ask/ or share your own experience. I'll explain what led me to do this and I hope it isn't too rambling. I have been taking Zoloft since 2011 and just recently have been told that manufacturing of the drug has ceased until Jan 2016. I don't know about the rest of the world but in Australia it has become like something out of Mad Max, with people trying to track down the last supplies. I tried the generic brand which I have been told is exactly the same. But after a month of this I began feeling more depressed/ sad than I ever have and began suffering from insomnia and blurred vision. The last straw for me was when I told my doctor of these changes and all I got in return was a cocky-bullshit answer that I must be imagining these changes. ''Yeah, well doc, I don't really want to imagine wanting to killing myself everyday, so politely go fuck yourself''. So I tried tappering off them from 100mg to 25mg (maybe to steep) and started noticing the withdrawals after a day. After a few days of this I stopped them completely and the dizziness became a constant thing. Week 2 brought with it the numbness and brain zaps. With week 3 came the insomnia/ aching joints. At about a month of stopping nearly all the signs have gone away. I may notice the dizziness if I move or look too quickly but you get used to doing things slow. So this video is just me telling you the withdrawal symptoms I experienced. It is not advised to just completely stop any antidepressant but I figured I was worse on the generic so I wanted to stop more than anything. I want to try and see what I am normal for a few months. The most important thing is being in the right headspace to do such a thing. Only try and go off them if you think you are ready. In my situation I have realised that most of the time if I feel anxious it is because of my surroundings and not what is going on in my head. Also avoid people who make you feel terrible. The world is made up of mainly idiots so it is more likely they have a problem and you don't. At least you have made the steps to help yourself. If I ever relapse into really bad depression/anxiety like I know that I can always go back on Zoloft. By then I think Pfizer would have mined the ''missing ingredients'' they need to make Zoloft from Mars.

Seroxat, Alastair Benbow and Peter Breggin (Paxil/Aropax) GSK

Glaxo SmithKline (GSK), the manufacturer of the antidepressant Paxil, resolved the suit in January 2002. The results of the resolution, including any settlement by defendant Glaxo SmithKline, were not announced. The outcome was described as a resolution rather than a settlement. Psychiatrist Peter Breggin, M.D. was the plaintiff's medical expert and worked closely with the attorneys in formulating the suit. According to Dr. Breggin, there is published and clinical evidence that all of the SSRIs can cause serious withdrawal reactions. Paxil, because of its intense impact and short duration of action, causes the most severe withdrawal reactions. Paxil is an antidepressant of the SSRI class that also includes Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa and Luvox. The suit charged that Paxil causes serious withdrawal problems of many kinds, resulting in a widespread societal problem when many individuals find themselves unable to stop taking the drug. The Paxil withdrawal suit was brought in San Jose, California on August 19, 2000 as a "Complaint for Injunctive Relief Under Business and Professions Code" (Nguyen & Farber, plaintiffs vs. SmithKline Beecham Corporation, Case No: CV791998). Legal brief for the resolved Paxil withdrawal suit GSK Updates the Paxil Label In December, in an event that may have been in part motivated by the Paxil withdrawal suit, GSK finally updated its label for Paxil with a specific mention of the danger of Paxil withdrawal reactions. One of the attorneys who filed the suit, Don Farber of San Rafael, California, told Dr. Breggin that it is highly likely that the suit influenced both the drug company and the FDA to strengthen the label in regard to Paxil withdrawal effects. Farber and his colleague Vince Nguyen voluntarily dismissed the suit when the new label was issued on December 14, 2001. The revised label uses the industry-favored term "discontinuation" instead of withdrawal. Discontinuation is a euphemism for withdrawal that is used to circumvent the negative connotations associated with addiction, dependency and withdrawal syndrome. By using the term discontinuation instead of withdrawal, the drug company obscures the potential severity of these symptoms and their tendency to force patients to continue taking the drug.
