The kidneys are essential for your health, as they cleanse and detoxify the body, filtering 10-150 quarts of blood on a daily basis. They are located under the rib cage. They eliminate waste and excessive fluids from the body, regulate the electrolyte levels, regulate blood pressure, produce more red blood cells, and keep the bones strong and healthy. If they are endangered and their function is impeded, the entire health is at risk. Therefore, it is of high importance to learn to distinguish the body signs that indicate kidney damage and failure. Welcome, to this edition of the First Aid Show. With first aid, we often look at someone's pulse. So, what we're going to do now is have a look at the different places on the body that we can detect a pulse. So now looking at the pulse points within the body, where can you detect a pulse on somebody? So, your primary pulse point would be your radial pulse, which is found in your wrist, just below your thumb. You should be able to feel your own pulse. So, that would be your starting point. Then working up your arm, you have a brachial pulse and then you also have one into the neck as well, which is your carotid pulse. Other pulses that you are able to detect would be your femoral pulses, which is just to where your leg and groin bend. You also have another pulse behind the knee, which is your popliteal pulse and then on top of the foot is your pedal pulse. And you should be able to feel all of your own pulses. When you take your pulses, obviously, you are going to use one hand. The only pulse you would ever use... You would never use two hands is the carotid. You would only ever feel one side at one time. And what sort of things are you feeling for? You actually feel the pulse pass through underneath your fingers and you will feel it just bounce slowly under your fingers. If you cannot find it, just have a fiddle around, you will eventually find it, just slight pressure on the wrist. If you press too deep, obviously, it will just feel as though you cannot feel anything, just come off very slightly. You will find it, you just have to have a dig around and find it in there. And will the pulse points, can you... Will that indicate blood pressure at all, if you lost the pulse point in a certain part of the body? Yes, normally the radial pulses, when somebody becomes unwell, the body is incredibly clever, and it will protect the vital organs. So, it will protect the brain, the heart, and all the internal organs. So, when you become unwell, you will lose what is called your peripheral pulses. So, you will lose your radial pulse, you will lose your pedal pulse and then you will slowly lose the pulses and it is to protect the main area of the body. Your carotid pulse, you should never lose, unless, of course, you have a cardiac arrest, or you die.

Learn to Measure Blood Pressure and Pulse - Medical Videos Step-by-Step Blood Pressure Check If you purchase a manual or digital blood pressure monitor (sphygmomanometer), follow the instruction booklet carefully. The following steps provide an overview of how to take your left arm blood pressure on either a manual or digital blood pressure monitor. Simply reverse the sides to take a blood pressure in your right arm. 1. Locate your pulse Locate your pulse by lightly pressing your index and middle fingers slightly to the inside center of the bend of your elbow (where the brachial artery is). If you cannot locate your pulse, place the head of the stethoscope (on a manual monitor) or the arm cuff (on a digital monitor) in the same general area.2. Secure the cuff Thread the cuff end through the metal loop and slide the cuff onto your arm, making sure that the stethoscope head is over the artery (when using a manual monitor.) The cuff may be marked with an arrow to show the location of the stethoscope head. The lower edge of the cuff should be about 1 inch above the bend of your elbow. Use the fabric fastener to make the cuff snug, but not too tight. Place the stethoscope in your ears. Tilt the ear pieces slightly forward to get the best sound. 3. Inflate and deflate the cuff If you are using a manual monitor: Hold the pressure gauge in your left hand and the bulb in your right. Close the airflow valve on the bulb by turning the screw clockwise. Inflate the cuff by squeezing the bulb with your right hand. You may hear your pulse in the stethoscope. Watch the gauge. Keep inflating the cuff until the gauge reads about 30 points (mm Hg) above your expected systolic pressure. At this point, you should not hear your pulse in the stethoscope. Keeping your eyes on the gauge, slowly release the pressure in the cuff by opening the airflow valve counterclockwise. The gauge should fall only 2 to 3 points with each heartbeat. (You may need to practice turning the valve slowly.) Listen carefully for the first pulse beat. As soon as you hear it, note the reading on the gauge. This reading is your systolic pressure (the force of the blood against the artery walls as your heart beats). Continue to slowly deflate the cuff. Listen carefully until the sound disappears. As soon as you can no longer hear your pulse, note the reading on the gauge. This reading is your diastolic pressure (the blood pressure between heartbeats). Allow the cuff to completely deflate.

This video describes the excision (removal) of a large tumor in the chest (thorax) which was secreting hormones (catecholamines) which resulted in a high blood pressure in this young male. His blood pressure returned to normal after the operation. These tumors usually occur in the adrenal gland (pheochrocytomas) but they can rarely arise at other locations (paraganglionomas). Intraoperative manipulation of these tumors can cause surges in blood pressure and therfore have to be tackled very gently

Always seek the advice of a qualified healthcare provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. When a healthy heart beats, it makes a “lub-dub” sound. The first heart sound “lub”, also known as S1, is caused by the closing of the AV valves after the atria have pumped blood into the ventricles. The second heart sound “dub”, or S2, originates from the closing of the aortic and pulmonary valves, right after the ventricles have ejected the blood. The time interval between S1 and S2 is when the ventricles contract, called SYSTOLE. The interval between S2 and the NEXT S1 is when the ventricles relax and are filled with blood, called DIASTOLE. Diastole is longer than systole, hence the lub-dub, lub-dub, lub-dub… Heart sounds are auscultated at 4 different sites on the chest wall which correspond to the location of blood flow as it passes through the aortic, pulmonic, tricuspid, and mitral valves, respectively. This is how SIMILAR defects associated with DIFFERENT valves are differentiated. Heart murmurs are whooshing sounds produced by turbulent flow of blood. Murmurs are diagnosed based on the TIME they occur in the cardiac cycle, their changes in INTENSITY over time, and the auscultation SITE where they are best heard. Examples of conditions associated with common systolic murmurs include: - MITRAL valve regurgitation, when the mitral valve does NOT CLOSE properly and blood surges back to the left atrium during systole. The murmur starts at S1, when the AV valves close, and maintains the same intensity for the entire duration of systole. This holosystolic murmur is best heard at the mitral region -the apex, with radiation to the left axilla. Because the valve closure in mitral regurgitation is INcomplete, S1 is often quieter. On the other side of the heart, a TRICUSPID valve regurgitation has similar timing and shape, but it is loudest in the tricuspid area and the sound radiates up, along the left sternal border. - AORTIC valve stenosis, when the aortic valve does NOT OPEN properly and blood is forced through a narrow opening. The blood flow starts small, rises to a maximum in mid-systole at the peak of ventricular contraction, then attenuates toward the end of systole. This results in a crescendo-decrescendo, or a diamond-shaped, murmur which starts a short moment after S1. It is often preceded by an ejection click caused by the opening of the STENOTIC valve. Aortic stenosis murmur is loudest in the aortic area and the sound radiates to the carotid arteries in the neck following the direction of blood flow. Again, on the other side of the heart, a PULMONIC stenosis has the same characteristics but is best heard in the pulmonic area and does NOT radiate to the neck. Other conditions that cause audible systolic murmurs include ventricular septal defect and mitral valve prolapse. An example of diastolic murmurs is aortic valve regurgitation. This is when the aortic valve does NOT CLOSE properly, resulting in blood flowing back to the left ventricle during diastole- the filling phase. As the blood flows in the REVERSE direction, the murmur is best heard NOT in the aortic area, but rather along the left sternal border. It peaks at the beginning of diastole when the pressure difference is highest, then rapidly decreases as the equilibrium is reached. Other common diastolic murmurs are associated with pulmonic regurgitation, mitral stenosis and tricuspid stenosis.

Antarctica is one of the most mysterious places on Earth. ☃️ It’s the coldest location ever discovered, with an average temperature of -58ºF and an occasional drop to as low as -128.5ºF. ❄️ In addition, this continent remains the least explored. Antarctica has no time zones, no countries, and only 2 ATMs. We're gonna tell you about 10 mysterious and bizarre findings that have been discovered in the ice of Antarctica. TIMESTAMPS: Elongated skulls 2:42 An ancient meteorite 3:28 Ancient fossils 4:19 Petrified remains of an unusual animal 5:01 Blood waterfall 5:44 Dry valleys 6:26 100-year-old whiskey 7:23 A scary creature 8:06 An underground lake 8:43 A frozen ship 9:36 #antarctica #unusualanimal #frozeninice Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music Achilles - Strings by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution licence (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100463 Artist: http://incompetech.com/ Evening of Chaos by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution licence (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1300041 Artist: http://incompetech.com/ SUMMARY: - This was a truly shocking discovery: 3 elongated skulls were found in Antarctica in 2014. These skulls were the first human remains uncovered in Antarctica. - For the last 50 years, people have found more than 10,000 meteorites in Antarctica. Some of them are more than 700,000 years old. - It turns out that dinosaurs used to live in Antarctica! Since the ‘80s, scientists have discovered almost a ton of fossils there. Most of these remains are more than 71 million years old. - Archaeologists made another amazing discovery in 2009: the ice of Antarctica had been hiding the fossilized remains of a unique creature. It was the size of a modern cat, but, unlike our popular pets, the animal was egg-laying. - An unaware onlooker might easily believe that the Taylor Glacier is leaking blood. Terrifying blood-red liquid indeed flows over the ice and falls into the sea. Luckily, the origin of this water isn't dramatic at all. This unusual waterfall contains so much iron oxide that it makes the water look like blood. - While Antartica is a snow-covered continent, you probably wouldn’t associate it with a lack of water. However, this land is home to one of the driest locations on our planet: the Dry Valleys. - 2 boxes of excellent Scotch whiskey were hidden in the ice of Antarctica for more than 100 years. After archaeologists discovered this unexpected treasure, they didn't remove it from its ice trap immediately because they were afraid of damaging their finding. - At a depth of 1,100 ft, American archaeologists made a truly terrifying discovery — they came across an unknown creature that didn't resemble any other living being known to people. - Scientists know of approximately 400 lakes in Antarctica. Due to incredible pressure, water stays liquid even when its temperature is below the standard freezing point. - In 1914, the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition began. Its aim was to cross the icy continent from one side to the other. 2 ships participated in the voyage. Tragically, one of them got stuck in the ice and was crushed. Let's talk about what is high blood pressure aka hypertension and dangers of have high blood pressure. An optimal blood pressure level is 120/80mmHg or lower, and high blood pressure or hypertension is 140/90 mmHg or higher, whatever your age. The lower your blood pressure the lower your risk of heart attack, heart failure, stroke and kidney disease will be. The top number refers to the amount of pressure in your arteries during contraction of your heart muscle. This is called systolic pressure. The bottom number refers to your blood pressure when your heart muscle is between beats. This is called diastolic pressure. There are no signs or symptoms of high blood pressure which is why it is called the silent killer. High blood pressure can be controlled through lifestyle changes or medication. Some of the dangers of high blood pressure are atherosclerosis, heart failure, stroke, and aneurysms. Atherosclerosis hardening and narrowing of the arteries silently and slowly blocks arteries, putting blood flow at risk. It’s the usual cause of heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral vascular disease -- what together are called cardiovascular disease. What Causes Atherosclerosis? Atherosclerosis begins with damage to the endothelium. It’s caused by high blood pressure, smoking, or high cholesterol. That damage leads to the formation of plaque. When bad cholesterol, or LDL, crosses the damaged endothelium, the cholesterol enters the wall of the artery. That causes your white blood cells to stream in to digest the LDL. Over years, cholesterol and cells become plaque in the wall of the artery. Plaque creates a bump on the artery wall. As atherosclerosis progresses, that bump gets bigger. When it gets big enough, it can create a blockage. That process goes on throughout your entire body. As a result, not only is your heart at risk, but you are also at risk for stroke and other health problems. Atherosclerosis usually doesn’t cause symptoms until middle or older age. But as the narrowing becomes severe, it can choke off blood flow and cause pain. Blockages can also rupture suddenly. More than a million Americans have heart attacks each year. A heart attack, or myocardial infarction (MI), is permanent damage to the heart muscle. "Myo" means muscle, "cardial" refers to the heart, and "infarction" means death of tissue due to lack of blood supply. If you have coronary artery disease, those arteries become narrow and blood cannot flow as well as they should. Fatty matter, calcium, proteins, and inflammatory cells build up within the arteries to form plaques of different sizes. The plaque deposits are hard on the outside and soft and mushy on the inside. When the plaque is hard, the outer shell cracks (plaque rupture), platelets (disc-shaped particles in the blood that aid clotting) come to the area, and blood clots form around the plaque. If a blood clot totally blocks the artery, the heart muscle becomes "starved" for oxygen. Within a short time, death of heart muscle cells occurs, causing permanent damage. This is a heart attack. https://www.webmd.com/heart-disease/guide/heart-disease-heart-attacks#1

http://www.rxwiki.com/articles/news_story Ask a pharmacist your questions now! http://www.rxwiki.com/askrx/questions Most people turn towards over-the counter decongestants when they have a stuffy nose or congestion. Unfortunately, if you have high blood pressure you should avoid these products. That is because decongestants work to relieve congestion by shrinking blood vessels in the nasal membranes of the nose and air passages. These changes may affect blood vessels in locations other than the nose resulting in increased blood pressure. Decongestant examples are pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine, and oxymetazoline. Decongestants in oral and nasal form can affect your blood pressure so it is recommended to try alternative options. Saline nasal spray is a great option to flush your sinuses. Drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, and getting rest are also important steps to helping your congestion. If you still experience bothersome nasal congestion, talk to your pharmacist or doctor for advice.

Today, the County of San Diego and its partners provided free blood pressure screenings to the public at select sites throughout the region. It was all part of the Love Your Heart program which urges residents to “know their numbers” and take charge of their own heart health. The screenings took place at over 170 sites around the county. Now in its sixth year, Love Your Heart has grown to include sites in Orange and Riverside counties, Massachusetts and in each of the states on both sides of the United States-Mexico border. For a list of San Diego County locations, call 2-1-1 or visit http://www.loveyourheartsd.org. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and the second leading cause of death in San Diego County. Obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and a family history of heart disease can put an individual at greater risk of heart disease. Getting a blood pressure check is a simple step to take for heart health. Last year, a record 30,000-plus people got their blood pressure checked at Love Your Heart in San Diego County and Mexico.
