Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a term used for a wide range of liver conditions that can affect people who drink very little to no alcohol. Fatty liver can also occur from excess alcohol consumption, but here we will concentrate on NAFLD. NAFLD occurs when an excess buildup of fat in the liver occurs, known as steatosis. Once fat exceeds 5-10% of the liver’s weight, the liver is considered to be a fatty liver. This occurs when the rate of de novo fatty acid synthesis and hepatic fatty acid uptake from plasma is greater than the rate of fatty acid oxidation and export - ie, too much fat is being created and not enough is being metabolized. Liver inflammation is characteristic is nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, one of the more advanced forms of the disease, that can eventually lead to scarring. This damage to the liver is similar to that caused by heavy alcohol use and can progress to liver cancer and cirrhosis (3). Causes: The exact cause isn’t known, however NAFLD is most common among those in their 40s and 50s who have metabolic syndrome, a cluster of risk factors that raise your chances of a wide range of diseases, including cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes. (1) Metabolic syndrome includes the following risk factors (2): Midsection fat accumulation High triglyceride level Low HDL cholesterol level High blood pressure High fasting blood sugar levels The majority of these risk factors are tied to obesity, so helping to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight is crucial. What Can You do to Combat Fatty Liver Disease? Currently there are no definitive treatments for fatty liver disease, so treatment is focused on lifestyle changes (3). 1. Cut out drinking 2. Cut out the fruit! Fructose is absorbed via portal vein and delivered to the liver in much higher concentrations as compared to other tissues. Fructose increases protein levels of all DNL enzymes during its conversion into triglycerides. Additionally, fructose supports lipogenesis in the setting of insulin resistance as fructose does not require insulin for its metabolism, and it directly stimulates SREBP1c, a major transcriptional regulator of DNL De-Novo lipogenesis 3. Boost Glutathione Levels- Glutathione is needed in order to recover from a fatty liver. Eat things like eggs, cabbage, broccoli and garlic as they have a higher sulfur content which can help convert into Acetyl Cysteine and create more glutathione in the body. 4. Turmeric- Turmeric is a spice whose use as medicine date back thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine. Curcuminoids are the compounds in turmeric that give the distinct yellow color and are largely credited with the impressive therapeutic benefits of turmeric. Turmeric is both a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant spice, and it is likely these aspects of turmeric that make it especially helpful for those with NAFLD. Study (7) A randomized double-blind placebo controlled trial took patients suffering from NAFLD and broke them into two groups. One group took 70-mg curcumin once daily for 8 weeks while the other group did the same with a placebo. Multiple measures were taken at baseline and then following the 8 weeks of treatment. It was found that those in the curcumin group experienced a significant reduction in liver fat content when compared to the placebo group - on average the curcumin participants experienced a 78.9% improvement in liver fat content! Additional significant reductions occurred in body mass index, serum total cholesterol levels, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood glucose when compared to the placebo group. References: 1. The liver is a gland that secretes chemicals required by other parts of the body. In fact, the liver is the only part of your body that is both an organ and a gland. Garlic is great for cleansing your liver. It helps activate enzymes in the liver that help clear out toxins. It also contains two natural compounds called allicin and selenium, which aid in the liver-cleansing process and protect the liver from toxic damage. Moreover, garlic reduces cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which can overload the liver and hamper its functioning. To promote liver health, use fresh raw garlic instead of processed, minced garlic or powder. Eat 2 or 3 raw garlic cloves daily and include garlic in your cooking whenever possible. According to a 2009 study published in Cancer Causes and Control, people who drink green tea have a lower risk of developing liver cancer. Drink 2 to 3 cups of green tea daily. If desired, sweeten your tea with honey. Note: Avoid drinking green tea in excess as it can have an adverse impact on your liver and other body parts. Number Six. Turmeric. Turmeric is another popular and effective liver-cleansing food. It also improves the body’s ability to digest fats. The compound curcumin in turmeric induces the formation of a primary liver detoxification enzyme called glutathione S-transferase. It also helps regenerate damaged liver cells. Mix ¼ teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of water and boil it. Drink it twice daily for a couple of weeks. Also, include this spice in your daily cooking.

Strange as it may seem, though insulin lack causes dissolution(means dissolving) of the fat stores in adipose tissue, it causes a great increase in the amount of stored triglycerides in the liver, leading to a very fatty liver. I never in any of my videos recommend just the straight ketogenic diet, I always recommended adding a bunch of vegetables to the ketogenic diet because let’s take a look at what a ketogenic diet is low carbs below 20 to 50g, it doesn’t specifically tell you what carbs you can consume, the piece of bread could be a 20g of carbs, an apple or berries so it doesn’t talk about the vegetable content. What you want to do is you would want to beat up your vegetables, you want to do at least 7 to 10 cups of vegetables not just from your potassium and your nutrients but to keep that liver flushed out. We are not gonna calculate vegetables into this calculation of 20 to 50 grams. It is unlimited vegetables and don’t add the vegetables into your calculations. Thanks for watching! The gallbladder squeezes stored bile into the small intestine through a series of tubes called ducts. The most common type of liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma. The biological conflict linked to bile duct cancer is a male territorial anger conflict. It can also be a female identity conflict. A territorial anger conflict means the anger you feel in your domain. The conflict shock has to do with the distress of not having resources to feed oneself or others. A female identity conflict means the inability to establish one’s position or place. This conflict is a decision struggle, or not knowing what choice to make, or where to go. Gallstones Your body encloses poisons in cholesterol and stores it in the liver duct as gallstones. Patients with cancer and other chronic illnesses have more stones than healthy individuals. Gallstones form in both the liver’s bile ducts and the gallbladder. Gallstones are soft or hard stones that only form in gall. They consist of cholesterol, salt, or bilirubin. It sounds logical that adding fat to the body will increase more fat in the arteries and on the body, however, that’s not how it works. Hormones turn calories into different things. The main hormone insulin is responsible for changing carbs into clogged arteries and fat on your body. If you keep insulin low by keeping carbs low - the dietary fat will not clog the arteries nor will it end up making you fat. Insulin is very inflammatory and can also start the progressive inflammatory process of your arteries. Hey guys, dr. berg here and in this video we are going to talk about will doing a high fat ketogenic diet clog your arteries. Just from the pure observation of eating more fat and a fatty clogged artery, it sounds logical that if you were to eat fat you are going to get a clogged artery. It sounds logical that you would eat more fat and then get more fat in your body but it is not how it works in the body because in the body there is a various hormones that tell certain types of calories what to convert into and the hormone that tells the body whether to clog or clean out the artery really is called insulin. Insulin is like the switch that converts fat into the body storage and also clogs arteries. Insulin is a very inflammatory hormone if you have too much of it you could get a lot of inflammation which can set you up for a whole series of events from the body starts healing the inflammation in the arteries with a combination of the cholesterols, calcium and fibrous kind of a connective tissue to form a little bit of a clot. What started that would be the high levels of insulin, not necessarily consuming cholesterol. Cholesterol is made by almost every single cell in the body. Your body makes about 3,000mg of cholesterol every single day. 3,000mg of cholesterol is equal to 300 strips of bacon, about a pound of butter or 14 eggs. Your body makes a lot of cholesterol. When you consume more fat, your body just makes less. That’s how it works. What really creates this clogged arteries is high levels of insulin by consuming too many carbohydrates. If you were to cut your carbohydrates down, like the breads, pasta, cereal, crackers, things like that, and sugar. If you would cut that down, you would notice your cholesterol would go way down. Also your triglycerides and your bad cholesterol will go way down. If you were to increase the sugar and the insulin, your cholesterol goes up and you should even experiment yourself to see if this is true for you. But what I want to give you is I have a little mini course that is very quick and you can probably get it done in maybe 20 minutes on ketosis to give you the basics. Other risk factors include diabetes, high cholesterol or triglycerides, alcohol abuse, gastric bypass surgery, certain medications, and malnutrition. There is no standard treatment for the fatty liver but Johns Hopkins University reports that weight loss can help prevent and treat a fatty liver. Fruits, Vegetables and Whole Grains A healthy diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are naturally low in calories and fat but high in fiber. According to the American Dietetic Association, fibrous foods increase the feeling of fullness that can prevent overeating and subsequent weight gain. Fiber-rich diets can also prevent type 2 diabetes, a risk factor for a fatty liver. Protein and Dairy The best proteins to support weight maintenance and weight loss are from lean sources like poultry, eggs, soy, lean meats, fish, seafood, beans, and legumes. Excess fat and calories can be reduced by removing all visible fat and skin from meat and poultry prior to cooking and using healthy methods to cook foods like grilling, steaming, broiling, baking, roasting, and poaching. The healthiest dairy products include low-fat or non-fat milk, yogurt, and cheese. Low-Cholesterol Foods Cholesterol is a type of fat found in animal products. A report in the August 7, 2011 issue of the "World Journal of Gastroenterology," recommends a diet that is low in saturated and trans fats. Foods high in omega fatty acids such as fatty fish, olive oil and nuts are recommended to help treat fatty liver. The report also recommends foods low in simple sugars and high-fructose corn syrup. Non-alcoholic Beverages Alcohol puts stress on the liver and is closely tied to liver disease. According to the California Pacific Medical Center as little as one glass of beer or wine, a week can contribute to a fatty liver. The ALF encourages individuals with a fatty liver to avoid all alcohol. What Are High Liver Enzyme Levels High liver enzymes are a symptom that a problem, disease, or condition has developed in the liver. If high liver enzymes go undetected and the problem progresses, there could be significant liver damage before you even know there's trouble. Most liver problems have no early warning signs or symptoms. That's why it's important to get regular physical check-ups that include tests to screen for high liver enzymes. These enzymes are also found in other parts of the body, including cardiac muscle, skeletal muscle, kidneys, brain, pancreas and lungs and in both red and white blood cells. Elevated liver enzymes don't usually indicate a specific liver disease, but they’re probably caused by some form of liver disorder, even if there are no symptoms present. What causes elevated enzymes? Liver enzymes are proteins which help maintain a variety of chemical and metabolic processes that occur in the liver. The human liver contains thousands of these enzymes, and high enzymes in the liver may indicate damage to liver cells or an obstruction to the biliary tract. The causes of high enzymes vary widely depending on the level of elevation, and the length of time the problem has been in progress. Common causes of high liver enzymes include: Autoimmune disorders of the liver and bile ducts, such as autoimmune hepatitis. Diabetes Drinking too much alcohol Elevated triglycerides Excessive use of certain herbal supplements Infections such as viral hepatitis and mononucleosis Medications, including certain nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, cholesterol-lowering medications, antibiotics and anti-seizure medications Metabolic liver diseases, such as hemochromatosis and Wilson's disease Obesity Tumors of the liver or bile ducts. To determine the underlying cause of high liver enzymes, your doctor may recommend additional tests. These tests might include a direct physical examination, ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, biopsy, and blood tests. There are few outward symptoms of liver disease. Possible symptoms, however, include pain in the lower right chest region, a noticeable size increase of the liver below the rib cage on the right, and visible jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes). Treatment of high liver enzymes depends on the cause. It is especially important for you to talk to your doctor about any nutritional or herbal supplements you are taking. Some Chinese herbal preparations have been found to be extremely damaging to the liver and should be avoided. So too should high doses of vitamin A and acetaminophen, especially if taken with alcohol. Sedatives and all unnecessary medications should also be avoided. Anyone who is overweight or obese should work with their doctor to try to shed some pounds. High fat, high cholesterol diets can be stressful and damaging to the liver. BLACK COFFEE & CHOLESTEROL Can Black Coffee Affect Your Cholesterol Levels. Coffee is a popular beverage that is heavily consumed in the United States. With a coffee shop on practically every corner, it is difficult not to join the coffee craze that has swept the nation. There are many varieties of coffees, but they are prepared in two main ways: filtered and unfiltered. Filtered coffees are the most common mode of preparation in the United States and involve brewing the coffee through a filter. Unfiltered coffees, also known as “boiled” coffees, do not employ a filter and include espresso, Turkish coffees, and French press coffees. Coffee contains many ingredients, most notably caffeine, chlorogenic acid, and chemicals called diterpenes. Many studies have examined the health benefits of coffee, paying particularly close attention to caffeine. Some studies have even suggested that drinking coffee may prevent diseases such as type II diabetes mellitus, Parkinson’s disease, certain types of liver cancer, and possibly improve your heart health by lowering your cholesterol and triglyceride levels. To date, coffee consumption has not been directly associated with cardiovascular disease, but some studies reveal that some forms of coffee may adversely affect your lipid profile. Although most studies have noted that filtered coffee has a neutral effect on lipid levels, unfiltered coffee appears to increase LDL, total cholesterol, and triglycerides in some studies. Two diterpenes found in high amounts in unfiltered coffee, cafestol, and kahweol, have been found to actually raise cholesterol levels. These studies examined different types of unfiltered coffee, as well as coffee oil. Most studies have indicated that individuals consuming roughly 60 milligrams of cafestol (equivalent to ten cups of unfiltered, French press coffee or two grams of coffee oil) may raise total cholesterol levels by an average of about 20%. This is largely due to an increase in low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels and triglyceride levels. High density lipoproteins (HDL) do not appear to be affected. It is thought that filtered coffee does not have this effect because the diterpenes are caught in the filter and not included in the coffee consumed. More studies are needed to examine the effect of coffee on lipid levels since the results from some of these studies have been mixed. In the meantime, if you are trying to watch your cholesterol and triglyceride levels, you may want to lower your consumption of unfiltered coffee beverages if you drink large amounts of this beverage frequently. Additionally, you should watch out for some of the things you are adding to your coffee. Heavy cream, sugar, chocolate syrup, and caramel can add calories to your coffee and could raise your cholesterol and triglyceride levels if you consume these items on a regular basis.

It may also be spread from an infected mother to her baby during birth. It is not spread by superficial cntact. It is one of five known hepatitis viruses: A, B, C, D, and E. Diagnosis is by blood testing to look for either antibodies to the virus or its RNA. Testing is recommended in all people who are at risk. Acute infection Hepatitis C infection causes acute symptoms in 15% of cases. Symptoms are generally mild and vague, including a decreased appetite, fatigue, nausea, muscle or joint pains, and weight loss and rarely does acute liver failure result. Most cases of acute infection are not associated with jaundice The infection resolves spontaneously in 10–50% of cases, which occurs more frequently in individuals who are young and female. Chronic infection About 80% of those exposed to the virus develop a chronic infection. This is defined as the presence of detectable viral replication for at least six months. Most experience minimal or no symptoms during the initial few decades of the infection. Chronic hepatiis C can be associated with fatigue and mild cognitive problems.Chronic infection after several years may cause cirrhosis or liver cancer. The liver enzymes are normal in 7–53%. Late relapses after apparent cure have been reported, but these can be difficult to distinguish from reinfection. Screening It is believed that only 5–50% of those infected in the United States and Canada are aware of their status. Testing is recommended for those at high risk, which includes injection drug users, those who have received blood transfusions before 1992, those who have been in jail, those on long term emodialysis, and those with tattoos.Screening is also recommended in those with elevated liver enzymes, as this is frequently the only sign of chronic hepatitis. Treatment HCV induces chronic infection in 50–80% of infected persons. Approximately 40–80% of these clear with treatment. In rare cases, infection can clear without treatment. Those with chronic hepatitis C are advised to avoid alcohol and medications toxic to the liver, and to be vaccinated for heatitis A and hepatitis B. Ultrasound surveillance for hepatocellular carcinoma is recommended in those with accompanying cirrhosis. Children and pregnancy Main article: HCV in children and pregnancy Compared with adults, infection in children is much less well understood. Worldwide the prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection in pregnant women and children has been estimated to 1–8% and 0.05–5% respectively. The vertical transmission rate has been estimated to be 3–5% and there is a high rate of spontaneous clearance (25–50%) in the children. Higher rates have been reported for both vertical transmission (18%, 6–36% and 41%). and prevalence in children (15%).
