https://www.iitutor.com/ Most metals when placed in cold water undergo no observable changes and show no signs of chemical reaction. However some metals including lithium, potassium, sodium and calcium do react with cold water to form hydrogen and a metal hydroxide. For example, the reaction of sodium with water is very vigorous. The formation of hydrogen in this reaction can be confirmed by collecting a sample of the gas produced and introducing a lighted splint. A small explosion or ‘pop’ confirms the presence of hydrogen gas. An acid-base indicator such as phenolphthalein or litmus can be used to confirm the production of hydroxide ions. Another group of somewhat less reactive metals including aluminium, zinc and iron do not react with cold water but will react with steam to produce hydrogen and a metal oxide. Less reactive metals such as gold, silver, copper, platinum and lead do not react with water or steam.

SUBSCRIBE!: http://bit.ly/1G97GmA SHARE THIS VIDEO: https://youtu.be/jjItuyiizlQ This video began as a one day experiment for SMOSH Lab, but then filmed over two days… one before SMOSH LAB and one after. The issue was that I really wanted an explosion, like a real legit explosion. After seeing how the potassium reacted with a tub of water I realized that the potassium would continue to float unless it was heavy enough to sink or sink because it was trapped in a weighted bag. Since we only had about 5 grams left (not enough to sink in the water due to the hydrogen gas immediately being formed) I went with the bag option. I was NOT disappointed! The reaction happened so quickly and was so loud I pulled my hip like a 85 year old man. Good to know I’m still got my moves and that this reaction worked so well. Potassium - The Active ALKALI METAL!

04:03
Please note that this video was made solely for demonstration purposes! Do not attempt to repeat the experiments shown in this video! So today I will show you a few experiments with a very dangerous and expensive metal - potassium. Potassium is an active alkali metal, which is in Group 1 table of chemical elements. Compounds of potassium are essential micronutrients for many living organisms. Pure elemental potassium was obtained in the early 19th century by an English scientist. On the appearance, potassium has a metallic luster, with a slightly bluish tint. It is a very soft metal, about as hard as the butter from a refrigerator. In air, a fresh slice of potassium is being instantly oxidized and coated with a layer of peroxides and carbonates. Potassium is more active than sodium. So if small pieces of sodium react with water more or less calmly, even small pieces of potassium immediately ignite and explode spontaneously. The reaction of potassium and water produces alkali, and hydrogen is released which burns pink flames due to potassium ions. In the slow motion shot you can see how hydrogen is ignited by potassium sparks. The behavior of potassium in the water is very unpredictable. Even small pieces can explode in water powerfully, although on the contrary large ones do not want to blow up and instead they just burn. Do not attempt to play with potassium, it is very dangerous! Because of its high activity potassium may spontaneously ignite in air. I took a small piece of potassium and began to spread it on a napkin. Once the napkin is coated with a thin layer of potassium, the latter reacts with oxygen and ignites, thus potassium superoxide and potassium peroxide are formed. Also, for this reaction a napkin is involved. Because of its high activity, the potassium can pull oxygen from the cellulose molecules that napkins are made of. Potassium can be set on fire, it will burn and form potassium superoxide. If potassium superoxide is dipped in water, it will begin to decompose into oxygen and potassium hydroxide . In the last experiment, I took a small piece of potassium and threw it into a cup with ethanol. Potassium rapidly dissolved in ethanol to form ethanolate, potassium and hydrogen. Sodium + Potassium = Strange Liquid Metal!

Please note that this video was made solely for demonstration purposes! Do not attempt to repeat the experiments shown in this video! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thoisoi2 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Thoisoi?ty=h Music: http://audiomicro.com Interesting chemical experiments: http://www.m.chemicum.com/ So today we will find out what happens when you combine two active alkali metals - sodium and potassium. For this, I took a piece of sodium and potassium, and began to rub them against each other within the evaporating dish. To prevent the alloy from oxidation by being exposed to air, I’ve decided to conduct the melting of sodium and potassium under a layer of kerosene. Since potassium is a very soft metal, it immediately deforms and wrinkles. Over time, a liquid alloy of sodium and potassium is formed at the point of contact of the two metals, which is instantly being covered by a gray oxide film. This alloy remains in liquid state from minus 12 to plus 785 degrees Celsius. It is a very dangerous alloy because it is more active than sodium or potassium on their own. I’m filling the syringe with a little bit of the alloy and, as you can see, alloy has a glossy surface inside the syringe, such as mercury. Now I’m dripping sodium potassium alloy into the water. As can be seen alloy instantly ignites in water forming burning droplets. If you drop this alloy on the wet surface, the alloy will also light up, sometimes with an explosion. In the end I poured the remaining alloy into the water. Sodium potassium alloy is used in nuclear reactors as a coolant, as well as in metallurgy. You can see the caesium sink to the bottom of the trough and then explode with almost enough force to break the trough.

Lithium Reaction In Water LARGE PIECE

02:48
My secret source of Lithium Metal has served me well. It's black 'cuz it sat out for too long before I could get it under oil. Just severe tarnishing like a penny sitting out for 20 years, except a lot faster. Lithium is highly reactive and should be handled with care. the LiOH (Lithium Hydroxide) released by this reaction is caustic and will burn skin and the Hydrogen released is highly flammable. Lithium is highly flammable as well. I may not be an expert, but have done extremely thorough research on the Alkali Metals. No less than that is enough to ensure safely. Remember, there's a fine line between having a little fun with chemistry and being an idiot. Example: Throwing small piece or Sodium into water from 10 feet away = having fun with chemistry Dropping large piece of Sodium into water from directly above it and looking down to see it more closely = being an idiot
