A Google TechTalk, 2/9/18, presented by Andreas Hintennach ABSTRACT: Ever since the development of lithium-ion batteries the spirit of invention has mainly lead to an evolution of existing materials. With the focus on olivine and Nickel- and cobalt based materials the energy densities, power densities and ageing mechanisms could be investigated over the years and support the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of electrochemical energy storage and conversion. With increasing numbers of cells being used in the world the need of a post Lithium-Ion technology emerges due to a limited availability of highly pristine nickel and cobalt and increasing need for recycling, environmental protection and overall energy efficiency. Nevertheless there is still an ongoing and very promising approach for e. g. novel stoichiometries of NMC materials, olivine materials, and nickel-rich materials with can significantly increase the energy density. But due to some limitation in the field of raw materials availability, accessibility, and sustainability, low-cobalt or cobalt-free materials are of very high interest, too. For example LMR (LNMO) can be an ideal candidate. Due to the very high reactivity and potential (i. e. 4.5 V) these materials require highly stable electrolytes. Finally, lithium-sulphur can lead to a highly recyclable, environmentally friendly system. Having a silicon-based anode (greater than 85 % Si) included both volumetric and gravimetric energy density can mean an interesting alternative to metal-oxide based materials. With the increased energy density, safety becomes a more and more important aspect in thermodynamic and kinetic investigations of these materials. This aspect can lead to the development of non-flammable electrolytes or solid state cells. Solid state cells are a very different but highly promising approach. Having a solid-solid interphase between electroactive materials and electrolyte the chemicals mechanisms significantly change to solid state chemistry rather than solid-organic interphases chemistry. All types of novel chemistries exhibit very different chemical mechanisms which require specific synthetically work, e. g. with the support of numerical simulation, for electrolytes, additives, binders, carbon materials, and even the surfaces of the electro-active materials itself. Understanding these mechanisms is essential to further improve the life-time, efficiency, and hence, the sustainability of any kind of energy storage and conversion, but batteries in particular. Previous E-bike Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYXreeuv3Jw in this video i build the second 24v 24ah lithium battery block for my 48v 24ah bicycle battery. i built this pack from low quality 18650 cells. each 6 cell pack cost 4.99$ so thats only about 85 cents per cell. even if they are low quality that is wonderfully useful. in this video when i say a cell is "unstable" i mean it is more likely to short out when it's voltage is dropped due to metal buildup on the plates. the main differances between good quality cells and poor quality cells such as these are due to the cheep cells being made of lower quality materials. some of the differances include 1: lower chemical-electrical conversion efficiency 2: lower capacity 3: faster self-discharge rate 4: shorter life span these characteristics dont ruin their functionality though, they are wonderfully useful even at the worst quality. ~~music used~~ Zelda Wind Waker: departure Scrapheap Challenge (junkyard wars) background music several songs from Jersey Devil for playstation 1

NexGen Lithium Ion Batteries are the future of sustainable energy! Lead acid batteries are less efficient at storing power than lithium ion batteries. Lithium batteries charge at nearly 100% efficiency, compared to the 85% efficiency of most lead acid batteries. This could mean all the difference in the world when you are charging solar panels for your home, boat or RV. Also in cold weather or harsh conditions NexGen Lithium batteries will provide more than 85% of it’s energy as opposed to traditional lead acid batteries which provide around 30%. One of the best things about NexGen Lithium Batteries is that they don’t have to be stored upright like traditional acid batteries. What happens when lithium-ion batteries overheat and explode has been imaged inside and out for the first time by a team led by UCL PhD student Donal Finegan (UCL Chemical Engineering) and Dr Paul Shearing (UCL Chemical Engineering). Understanding how Li-ion batteries fail and potentially cause a dangerous chain reaction of events is important for improving their design to make them safer to use and transport. Hundreds of millions of these rechargeable batteries are manufactured and transported each year as they are integral to modern living, powering mobile phones, laptops, cars and planes. Although battery failure is rare, earlier this year, three airlines announced they will no longer carry bulk shipments of lithium-ion batteries in their cargo planes after the US Federal Aviation Administration tests found overheating batteries could cause major fires. Ya' can't charge frozen Lithium. It's no secret, Lithium Batteries are fantastic, they can absorb a much higher percentage of the solar power as compared to Lead Acid batteries which lose much of the power to heat. This higher efficiency effectively doubles the amount of power we collect from the solar array. Li-Fe batteries can also sustain high current discharge without voltage sag, allowing us to use high current loads like an Induction Cooktop and Air Conditioner... All Powered by Solar! But they aren't without their own Achilles heel, and that's that they can't be recharged when frozen. In this video, I show how I installed a silicone heater mat in the pack and how I plan to use PID controller to keep a stable temperature. If you have a cordless drill with Ni-Cd battery pack, this video is for you. Because Ni-Cd batteries do not long last. Whereas, we can not buy Li-Ion battery to replace Ni-Cd battery for this particular drill. So, I removed the Ni-Cd battery from my drill and attached a cord to connect to the 12V DC socket. Now on, I can use my drill for long hours without power interruption.

I bought some green laser pointers on eBay recently and I have to say I was pretty disappointed with the lasers. Half of the laser pointers didn’t even turn on, and the ones that did work were very dim and covered in dents. I decided I should try opening them up and try to make them stronger. I started with the classic “pot mod” by cranking up the potentiometer on the driver. It made the laser brighter but it still couldn’t burn stuff. I scrapped the driver and hooked it directly to my variable PSU but that killed the laser almost immediately. I realized that I needed cutting edge laser technology in order to satisfy my extreme desires. I settled on using the Nichia NDG7475 laser diode as that is the brightest laser pointer out there that is still small enough to be jammed into a laser pointer housing. I hooked it up to a high efficiency buck converter for current regulation. I used a MOSFET as the main switching component as the stock switch in the laser pointer would not have handled the high current demands on the laser diode. I also used high drain 10440 li-ion batteries as the thought of 2 AAA batteries powering this new circuit is laughable. The modded laser pointer is awesome. In fact it is probably the brightest laser pointer in the entire world if your definition of a laser pointer is a laser that fits in a 2x AAA host. Part 9 of the series to build a DIY Powerwall - home battery from old laptop batteries. Many people are using a BMS for balancing their Electric Bike smaller 18650 battery packs which is fine for the lower amp batteries. After researching I decided to go with the approach of Lithium-ion battery balancers to help maintain an even balanced voltage across my 7 batteries. These battery balancers have no voltage cut offs built in they are less complex and less electronics to fail. I'm using the inverter to manage the top and bottom battery bank cut offs. The battery balancers were purchased from Aliexpress.com I will post the link here in few days. The battery balancers are working really well and work by using dc voltage on the battery side and the battery balancer interconnects the green and blue cables use AC current to share the voltage across other batteries. 10Amp balance charge capable. Most BMS system provide much less than 10Amps which is why low cost BMS units are not very efficient when you have large amps in your batteries. The 2018 Camry Hybrid is equipped with a Lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery pack on the LE grade and Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) battery pack on the SE and XLE. Along with the traditional Camry Hybrid system drive modes of NORMAL, ECO and EV, a new SPORT drive mode setting has been added that allows for an increase in power from the hybrid system for improved acceleration response relative to pedal input. The NORMAL, ECO, and SPORT modes can each be used while EV mode is activated. The Toyota Camry Hybrid also features the new Auto Glide Control (AGC), which helps to improve fuel efficiency by calculating an efficient coasting logic. When driving normally, engine braking will slow the vehicle down when the driver lifts off from the accelerator pedal. However, to avoid aggressive engine braking, AGC limits the loss of vehicle speed through an automatic drive setting that acts more like a neutral gear, allowing the vehicle to coast to the stoplight. An AGC indicator light is illuminated on the Multi-Information Display (MID) when AGC is in operation to alert the driver that less deceleration torque than normal is currently being used. Of note, AGC can only be activated when the vehicle is being operated in the ECO drive mode setting. In this short video, I'll show you how to assemble this 12V Li-ion battery setup for portable (QRP) HAM Radio operations. 20,000 mAh @ 3.7V = 74 watt-hours / 12V = 6Ah which is 1 Ah less than the 7Ah Lead-Acid battery. You can connect another battery pack in parallel for 12Ah @ $46. With this setup I save on a Battery Management System since I can just swap the batteries out and use a regular battery charger (of course you need a battery charger).

Let's make a low cost 1-8 cell 18650 Lithium Ion battery charger. This was just a quick project I came up with to charge 1-8 18650 cells for a very low cost. The mini-USB connector is shaped a bit like the "pin" on a dovetail joint and all I needed to do was cut the "tail" in the base of the battery holder to fit the connector. If you make it a tight fit, no need for any glue. I had to remove a bit of the bottom plastic to clear the components atop the TP4056 charger. I later put a few strips of electrical tape over the exposed wiring to insulate and protect it. To use, just plug in 1 or more 18650 cells. This charger runs up to 4.2V @ 1A. Each cell you add cuts the per-cell charging current. I mainly use this charger to recharge batteries after I have run a discharge test. So I'll throw in 4 pairs of cells sitting at about 3V and let them charge at 125mA/cell for a day or so. This way I'm not tying up a balance charger to do this. This charger is also good if you have sub-3V 18650 cells that you want to slowly bring back to see if they hold a charge. The widespread integration of renewable, intermittent energy sources such as wind or solar is dependent upon the development of efficient large-scale energy storage systems for load-leveling the electric grid. Similarly, the acceptance of plug-in hybrid electric—and especially pure electric vehicles—hinges on the availability of intermediate scale, safe, low-cost energy storage batteries to provide practical driving ranges. These approaches can help mitigate CO2 emissions and urban pollution, but it is widely acknowledged that traditional Lithium-ion batteries—which work on the principle of reversible storage of electrons and Li-ions in bulk materials—are approaching their limits. This presentation focused on the challenge to find better electrochemical energy storage systems that go “beyond Li-ion” batteries. Topics encompassed multivalent intercalation batteries and cells that operate on the basis of “chemical transformations.” These both represent exciting new technologies that could meet the needs for high energy density storage. Yet many barriers remain to realizing their full promise, especially for automotive applications. They require cleverly designed materials for the electrodes, different electrolyte strategies than those used for Li-ion batteries and advanced electrode architectures. If the hurdles can be overcome, then energy storage technology has a much better opportunity to change the way we manage energy. In this seminar, University of Waterloo's Linda Nazar discussed the research in the Electrochemical Energy Research Centre lab at the University of Waterloo that is aimed at addressing the above challenges. This talk was presented on September 7, 2016 as part of the IHS Markit Seminar Series. About the speaker: Linda Nazar was educated at UBC and the University of Toronto where she received her Ph.D. degree in materials chemistry. After a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Exxon Corporate Research, in 1987 she joined the University of Waterloo. She was promoted to full professor in 2000 and has established the Electrochemical Energy Research Centre. She has been an invited professor at the IMN/Université de Nantes, the Materials Science department in UCLA, the CNRS in Grenoble, France; and at Caltech. Nazar has achieved international recognition as a leader in the areas of solid state chemistry, electrochemistry, energy storage and materials science. She has co-authored over 200 publications, and has 8 patents. She is listed in the 2014 Highly Cited Research List (Web of Science). Nazar is also the recipient of several academic and professional honors and awards, including the ECS Battery Division Research Award (2009), the IBA award (2011), the IUPAC Distinguished Women in Chemistry award (2011), the August-Wilhelm-von-Hofman Lecture award (2013), and was a 2010 Moore Distinguished Scholar at Caltech. She was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 2012, and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2015. ⚡️ October 16, 2017 - Doing a "shakedown" of this PowerAdd portable battery "ChargeCenter" with Li-Ion batteries and a 100w modified sine wave inverter. It really isn't a "generator" per se (does NOT come with solar panels). However, in this test, I hook up two 50w Mohoo mono flexible solar panels and see "how it performs". I made this video to help/educate others (esp those w/o power in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico). Something like this can provide a little bit of comfort during a terrible situation. So, if you add some solar panels (like the ones I have)...total cost would be around $350 or so. Likes: Really good battery life for such a small unit (can take those Li-Ion batteries down to "0"). Multiple USB outlets, 12v outlets, one 19v outlet, stupid bright LED light, inverter works while charging (and the light), small/lightweight, comes with adapters, 12v solar panel charging w/o the need for a solar charge controller, fuel gauge (SOC) is really slick, removable inverter Dislikes: Modified sine wave inverter...would pay a little more for a pure sine wave inverter, black strap handle already fraying apart (looks to be non-replaceable), could be built a little more "rugged", only one USB QC 3.0 outlet (for rapid charging for Apple, iPhone, and other devices that have "Turbo" charging technology), 12v power socket charging cable came in bad (had to snip the end and make my own. It will now charge via using the car/truck's electrical system), USB outlets DO NOT work while charging source is plugged in (really bad idea) Bottom Line: Not a bad little battery/charging unit...but, def not "great". It has a lot of room for improvement. Add a solar panel and it becomes a "generator" per se. Def useful for many who need something small/emergency back up/keep in a vehicle...was able to run a 19" LED TV for 8+ hours (around 15w AC load). However, the modified sine wave inverter makes me reluctant to plug anything "expensive" into it that uses AC power. There are other ones out there available that aren't that much more expensive with a "pure sine wave" inverter and would be MUCH more efficient and easier on sensitive electronics. ~40w charging limit on any input source...prob not a "big deal" for most, this equates to about 5-hours charge time from "0-to-100" on the fuel gauge. 3/5 stars...and that is pushing it. Needs to be a pure sine wave inverter and USB outlets that work while charging...and a removable carrying handle with better material. Lithium-ion batteries are ubiquitous in everyday life, and are transforming mobility through electric vehicles, and electricity grid through the storage of intermittent renewables. Metrics such as energy density, lifetime and safety are controlled by phenomena that span enormous length scales, ranging from sub-Angrostroms to centimeters and beyond. Despite the significant progress over the past three decades, we still lack a complete understanding of how each length scale connects to one another, and most importantly, controls the behavior of the device. One grand challenge for materials used in lithium-ion batteries, like other so-called hierarchical materials, is to bridge the enormous span in length scales through integration of theory, advanced characterization, and data analytics. In this talk, I will provide an overview of our group’s recent activities on addressing this challenge through (1) a bottom-up approach, that is, understanding the fundamental nature of battery operation at the ion/electron, particle and agglomerate length scales, and (2) a top-down approach, that is, analyzing massive set of battery cycling data to discover new battery management protocols. This approach of merging predictive and data-driven design of lithium-ion batteries has already contributed to breakthroughs in several electrode materials.
