When Michael Bierut was tapped to design a logo for public school libraries, he had no idea he was embarking on a years-long passion project. In this often hilarious talk, he recalls his obsessive quest to bring energy, learning, art and graphics into these magical spaces where school librarians can inspire new generations of readers and thinkers. The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). The Curriculum Materials Library at GVSU offers a variety of materials to help preservice or graduate education students in planning for a lesson. This short interview demonstrates how one student began brain-storming for a lesson with materials found at the CML. The CML is located at 201A DeVos on the Grand Rapids Campus. A second smaller print collection is found at the Mary I. Pew Curriculum Collection (4th floor) on the Allendale campus.

Watch more How to Teach Your Child to Read videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/460468-How-to-Encourage-Children-to-Read-Reading-Lessons Hi. my name is Anne Glass. I'm a reading and learning specialist at a private school in New York City and I work with Kindergarteners through 3rd graders on Reading, Word Study, and Writing Skills. In addition to be a reading specialist and learning specialist, I'm also a parent and today I'm going to talk to you about topics in reading. Almost every school from at least first grade on, requires students to read about 20 -30 minutes each night. Now getting your child to actually sit down and read the book can often be a challenge and I hear from parents all the time that it usually culminates in a battle involving bribery, threats, pleading, and all kinds of drama. There are some things you can do to avoid getting to this point. The first one is to model your own reading. If your child sees you reading and enjoying a book, he's going to be much more likely to sit down and do it. It's a great way to avoid a do as a say and not as I do scenario. And children who grow up in a household where reading is a desired activity are much more likely to be independent readers on their own. The next suggestion is to make sure your child has a designated reading place. That could be in bed, or a special chair, or on the sofa, or just anywhere in your home where he feels comfortable reading. You can even have a discussion around that, discussing where you enjoy reading. You might have a special chair, and you can talk about how that feels comfortable to you and its a place where you can really concentrate and create a quiet bubble for reading for yourself. Another important tip for enforcing reading time at home and making it a pleasant thing to do is to eliminate possible distractions. That means turning off the TV, and turning off the computer, and also making sure that noisy siblings are out of the way and quiet, which I know is easier said than done. It's also completely acceptable to provide a small bribe or gimmick to your child if you think that will motivate them to start reading. I recently gave my son a book light and he actually thought it was fantastic and he looks forward every night to getting into bed at bedtime and pulling the covers up over his head, turning on his book light, and reading for about a half an hour. So that's actually worked out really nicely, and it felt like a treat for him and it made it something fun to do, and he's also told me that it just creates silence around him where its just him and his book. One gimmick that I would advise against, and I've seen a few of these, are these bookmarks that have a digital clock on them and you can actually set the clock for the 20 or 30 minutes that is required for reading. The problem with this is that its the only thing your childs going to pay attention to and they will watch the minutes tick down until the required time is up. So there's never going to be an opportunity for that child to really dig into the book and have the pleasure of losing himself in a story.

Brother and Sister seem to have forgotten some important manners - like saying “please” when they need something, or saying “thank you” when something gets done for them. In fact, a lack of manners seems to be the norm around Bear Country school as well. After a few incidents are relayed to Mama and Papa during dinner, the cubs are reminded about the importance of saying please and thank you, and how much those three little words show appreciation and respect for others, and the things people do for them. David, the out-of-control monster-child is back. In David Goes to School video, young David shows up late to class, , chews gum in class, yells answers out of turn, pulls pigtails, stares out the window, cuts in line, has a food fight ("I don't care who started it!" says the teacher), lingers at recess, and draws on his desk. Colorful, hilarious, childlike video scenes examine our strangely appealing demon-boy at eye level, which is especially disgusting as David stretches an enormous mass of bubble gum from his pointy-toothed maw. After an intense day of exuberant misbehaving, however, he stays after school and washes all the desks until they sparkle. The day ends with a gold star and a pat on the head... something that any child (or adult) would find satisfying. Buy this book on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2kKMgYm

Fourth Graders follow state recognition process with fictional Virginia Indian Tribe Dumbarton Elementary School is later awarded Virginia's School Library of the Year In November of 2011, fourth graders from the Dumbarton Elementary School in Richmond, Virginia delivered a presentation seeking "state recognition" for their fictional "Gv-he" American Indian tribe. Due to the efforts of school Librarian Suzanna L. Panter and fourth-grade teacher Rebecca Kelley, the Dumbarton Elementary library was given a Henrico 21 award for exceptional lesson plans that incorporate 21st century skills. The school's library was also awarded School Library of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Librarians to become the first elementary school ever to win the award. Following the same guidelines American Indian tribes have had to follow in Virginia, students made their case to a mock Virginia Council on Indians (VCI) in front of their fellow students, school officials and Chief Lynette Allston of the Nottoway Indian tribe of Virginia, whose tribe was awarded Virginia state recognition in February of 2010. During the presentation, Dumbarton students showed the mock VCI several student-created documents, tribal history timelines, family genealogies and maps of the Gv-he ancestral lands. "When Chief Allston came to our school and watched the students present the mock petition for recognition to the Virginia Council of Indians. The tears in her eyes and her approval told me that our project was a success. The love and respect the students had for her also told me that we had accomplished our goals." I have the utmost respect, admiration, and love for Chief Allston. Her intelligence combined with her bulldog persistence makes her a force to be reckoned with, yet she maintains her poise and grace through challenging situations. She is a role model for all women," said Kelley. "We were all in tears," said Allston. "The teachers and the school librarian were very encouraging to the students who did so much research outside the scope of what you would expect of fourth graders. They all have a good reason to be proud," said Allston. Taking into consideration the entire process, perhaps most exciting to students was the decision of the mock VCI at the end of the presentation. When the mock VCI gave the elementary students "Gv-he" tribe a thumbs-up recommendation for state recognition, the fourth graders let out an enthusiastic cheer.
