1. The beginning of the lesson students are urged to define rap, and then begin to explore the similarities it has with poetry. The purpose is for students to recognize that even though a lot of rap that comes out of the mainstream gets a bad rep, it can be a very aspect when applied appropriately by artists. 2. Section two of the lesson plan is a "Is it Shakespeare, or Hip-Hop?" game. Students will hear quotes spoken that were by Shakespeare himself or a Hip-Hop artist. The slideshow provides the answer as to who wrote the rhyme after each rhyme. 3 THE ACTIVITY Students then are given a brief history of Harriet Tubman, and will begin writing a rap/poem about her. Students write a rap/poem using all ways of figurative language from assonance to onomatopoeia. Simile, Metaphor, Personification, Alliteration, Hyperbole, they are all included in the activity. 4 When students are done with the activity, they may recite their rap/poem to a partner. If you would like to do things differently for your classroom you could have them present their rap/poems to the class publicly, or just for extra credit. I hope you enjoy it! Be sure to check out the preview at the top of this description!

Born into slavery in Maryland, Harriet Tubman (c. 1820 to March 10, 1913) escaped to freedom in the North in 1849 to become the most famous "conductor" on the Underground Railroad. Tubman risked her life to lead hundreds of family members and other slaves from the plantation system to freedom on this elaborate secret network of safe houses. A leading abolitionist before the American Civil War, Tubman also helped the Union Army during the war, working as a spy among other roles. After the Civil War ended, Tubman dedicated her life to helping impoverished former slaves and the elderly. In honor of her life and by popular demand, in 2016, the U.S. Treasury Department announced that Harriet Tubman will replace Andrew Jackson on the center of a new $20 bill. #Biography Subscribe for more Biography: http://aetv.us/2AsWMPH Delve deeper into Biography on our site: http://www.biography.com Follow Biography for more surprising stories from fascinating lives: Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Biography Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/biography Twitter - https://twitter.com/biography Biography.com captures the most gripping, surprising, and fascinating stories about famous people: The biggest break. Harriet Tubman Spiritual life lessons that changed my life. Visit my website: www.authentikbeautymagazine.com Blog: http://junglebeautygoddess.blogspot.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/junglebeautygoddesses/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/georgesturges Artist Statement My name is Cassandra George Sturges and I am a doll maker. I didn’t choose dolls they chose me. I started sewing and crafting doll clothes, doll accessories, and doll shoes from the age of five until the age of nine. I loved making doll clothes for my Barbie doll. My dolls wore cute fashionable doll clothes. People in my neighborhood paid me in green Now & Later candy to make doll clothes for their dolls. Unfortunately, a sewing needle broke off in my left knee creating a gangrene infection that almost caused my left leg to be amputated. I was in the hospital for 2 months. I was tutored and home schooled for most of the fourth grade. I stopped sewing doll clothes, making doll shoes, and doll accessories until the age of 44. Doctors were unable to remove the eye of the sewing needle from my knee. I wanted to make dolls that celebrated the unique beauty that all women and girls share around the world. When I tried to dictate to my dolls how they should look—they resisted. Some of my dolls insisted on having no hair. I began to learn that the journey of doll making is mystical and enchanting because I was channel for them to come into existence – not necessarily the creator of their authenticity. In addition to making cloth dolls, fabric sculptures, and doll accessories, I write fantasy fiction—The Jungle Beauty Goddesses are fabric sculptures / cloth dolls who are characters in my fantasy science fiction book series. The first book “The Jungle Beauty Goddesses, Pretty Blue Ball, and the second book in the series, The Jungle Beauty Goddesses’ Aquatic Ball’ can be purchased at http://junglebeautygoddess.blogspot.com/. I named my YouTube video channel Authentik Beauty Handmade Doll Crafts DIYS because my DIYs, and tutorials are not modeled after mainstream toys and dolls. Many of my doll crafts are not traditional. Many of my doll DIYS and tutorials may be deemed as eccentric , but this is what happens when you start back making dolls, doll clothes, doll shoes, doll food and doll accessories in mid-life. The little girl inside of you has come out to play, but she doesn’t want to play with Ever After High (EAH), LPS, American Girl, Barbie, or any other mainstream dolls—she has gray hair and wrinkles and she has learned that real beauty is not found in makeup, lipstick, cosmetics, nail polish, clothes, fashion, or hairstyles—the little girl has learned that authentic / Authentik Beauty is found between perfection and imperfection—and that the perceived flaws is what gives us our personal identity. As you will see in many of my doll craft DIYS- I am completely addicted to hot glue gun crafts. I love making things out of glue sticks. You will see an abundance DIYS and tutorials, doll crafts, and projects made out of hot glue guns and glue sticks. I also enjoy making stop motion animation YouTube Videos with my dolls and telling doll stories. On my YouTube Video Channel, I am sharing How to, DIYS, DIY, tutorials on how to create handmade doll crafts, glue gun crafts for dolls, No Sew Doll Clothes, doll accessories, glue gun diys, diys doll crafts, and how to make doll clothes. All of the doll crafts that I make and sew can be adjusted to fit mini and miniature doll crafts and doll houses. I have made several no sew doll crafts that I hope you enjoy making. My Vision for my Authentik Beauty Handmade Doll Crafts DIYS YouTube Video Channel is to share my gifts, talents, and ideas with doll makers and doll lovers around the world; so that we may collectively, share our unique creative expressions of beauty and art that inspires, entertains, and brings overwhelming joy to the little girl or child who dwells inside all of us and yearns to come out and play.

Teaching Slavery in the Classroom February 22, 2017 By KrisAnne Hall Subscribe, Like, Comment and Share Time for a little history on our educational system. We need this history because once we understand the roots of our modern system, it will become clear why we have division on all levels in our society. We start with three men; Wilhelm Wundt, Edward Lee Thorndike and John Dewey. These three men largely believed children to be simple vessels of stimulus and response. Their beliefs were to later form the basis of the General Education Board, which was incorporated by Congress in 1902. The General Education board was endowed by John D. Rockefeller Sr as a means for experimenting with and implementing systems proposed by Dewey, Thorndike and Wundt. Take this lesson with you to your next parent/teachers conference. Harriet Jacobs was a remarkable woman who was born into slavery in 1813 in Edenton, North Carolina, and died free in Washington, D.C., at the age of eighty-four. In her writing, she put an individual face on major social and political events of her era, particularly one of the most inhumane aspects of enslaved womanhood, sexual abuse and molestation by white men. After escaping from her master, she spent seven long years enduring great discomfort in the space she called “my dismal little hole,” a 9’ x 7’ x 3’ crawlspace above the porch of her grandmother, emerging only occasionally late at night to try to walk. In which John Green teaches you about America's "peculiar institution," slavery. I wouldn't really call it peculiar. I'd lean more toward horrifying and depressing institution, but nobody asked me. John will talk about what life was like for a slave in the 19th century United States, and how slaves resisted oppression, to the degree that was possible. We'll hear about cotton plantations, violent punishment of slaves, day to day slave life, and slave rebellions. Nat Turner, Harriet Tubman, and Whipped Peter all make an appearance. Slavery as an institution is arguably the darkest part of America's history, and we're still dealing with its aftermath 150 years after it ended. i know this sucks but in defense i was up at 1 30 in the morning doing this... kay bye. Mr. Melos class! per. 1 script: Harriet Tubman was a contributer to the Underground Railroad. Before that though she was a slave on plantations for almost 30 years. She was beaten daily by her masters. One day she had enough of it and decided to get her friend Fredrick and escape to freedom. They devised a plan to escape while their master was awaay. When their master came back she was completely confused and went on a search to find her missing slaves. Meanwhile Fredrick and Harriet were climbing through tall grass and bushes trying to find freedom. When they got tired they would sleep on a cloth Harriet made before they left. They'd take turns sleeping just in case someone might still be after them. About 4 weeks after they left they finally found the Underground Railroad! They were so excited and happy!that day they walked into the sunset with the feeling of being safe and free for the rest of they're lives. THE END! Alisa Chaidez, Brittney Disanto, Glen Abalayan.

The Civil War and Reconstruction (HIST 119) Professor Blight discusses the rise of abolitionism. Blight begins with an introduction to the genre of slave narratives, with particular attention to Frederick Douglass' 1845 narrative. The lecture then moves on to discuss the culture in which antebellum reform grew--the factors that encouraged its growth, as well as those that retarded it. Professor Blight then describes the movement towards radical abolitionism, stopping briefly on colonization and gradualism before introducing the character and ideology of William Lloyd Garrison. 00:00 - Chapter 1.
