http://wright.edu/news "Celebrating quilt stories" was the theme of the quilt show held Jan. 19 to Jan. 21 in the Apollo Room of the Student Union at Wright State University. The fourth annual show featured hundreds of handcrafted quilts. Each quilt was accompanied by a story from the quilt maker, giving guests a glimpse into what inspired each artist. “What we are trying to do is allow fiber artists to show off their work,” said Linda Morgan, show organizer. Members of the Wright State Knitting and Crocheting Circle made hats, gloves and scarves at the show. Students interested in a warm crocheted item can pick one up for free during Scarf Frenzy on Friday, Jan. 27. The event will be held on the second floor of Dunbar Library beginning at noon until supplies last. An auction was held on Saturday, Jan. 21, with proceeds supporting a Wright State student scholarship. The quilt show was organized by Wright State’s Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies program. Her practice engages with the natural environment utilizing the skeletal frameworks of flora and fauna as the basis of her own embroidered specimens. Threads are densely stitched into free form sculptures that are carefully pinned to paper or set in resin preserving them as delicate handmade artifacts. Her work explores themes of the inter-connected-ness of living things and environmental degradation. Meredith Woolnough's elegant embroidered traceries capture the delicate beauty of nature in knotted embroidery threads. Through a delicate system of tiny stitches she creates intricate and complex openwork compositions that are then carefully pinned in shadowboxes, just like preserved specimens. The work maps the frameworks of the various veining systems found in nature to create work that explores the balance, harmony and connectivity of life on Earth. Inspired by the patterns, structures and shapes found in plants, coral, cells and shells Meredith's embroideries represent both the robust beauty and elegant fragility of life. This lesson offers a whimsical makeover for discarded dishes. Use castaway pieces from home, thrift stores or garage sales and recycle into contemporary sculptures. Pieces of unprimed canvas are layered and glued to the surface of dishes or utensils, then painted with Blick acrylic. Design a place setting for your favorite artist, or, design around a theme, as Judy Chicago did in the 1970's with "The Dinner Party". Storage for the quilter can be an overwhelming proposition. How and where to store quilt patterns, how to see your quilt design, where to put all of those accessories and notions can drive a quilter crazy. The biggest and certainly the bulkiest problem is that of storing all of that beautiful quilting fabric. All this week we have been discussing various storage options. Today I am showing you my solution. After much trial and error, I found the fabric storage system that best works for me (when I actually put everything away). By using clear sweater drawers (I found mine at the Container store) I can protect my fabric, see what I have and display all of that beautiful fabric I have collected. Sometimes my fabric is stored by color, sometimes by theme and sometimes by project. However I have them sorted, I am able to see what I have available to me. It is all so much better than digging through bins that don't show what I possess. What are your solutions, or even challenges?

'Faith Ringgold is an American artist and author who became famous for innovative, quilted narrations like Tar Beach that communicate her political beliefs. Faith Ringgold was born in New York City in 1930. While working as an art teacher in public schools, she began a series of paintings called American People, which portrayed the civil rights movement from a female perspective. In the 1970s, she created African-style masks, painted political posters and actively sought the racial integration of the New York art world. During the 1980s, she began a series of quilts that are among her best-known works, and she later embarked on a successful career as a children's book author and illustrator. The early 1960s would prove to be a pivotal period for Faith. She married Burdette Ringgold on May 19, 1962 and also embarked on creating a series of paintings—American People—that today rank among her most important work. Centered around themes from the civil rights movement, paintings such as Neighbors, Die and The Flag Is Bleeding all capture the racial tensions of the era. Ringgold's first solo gallery show in 1967 featured the American People series. After leaving her teaching job in 1973, Ringgold was free to focus on her art more. She began to pursue working in other mediums. She first branched out with a collection of portrait sculptures called The Harlem Series and then she created African-influenced masks that were included in performance pieces. During this period she also made posters in support of the Black Panthers and activist Angela Davis. After attempting unsuccessfully to have her autobiography published, at the turn of the decade Ringgold discovered a new way to tell her story. Once more drawing her inspiration from Tibetan art, and in honor of her mother’s early influence, Ringgold began a series of quilts that are perhaps her best-known work. She assembled the first quilt, Echoes of Harlem in 1980 (a year before her mother passed away) and went on to make numerous others, eventually incorporating text as well. Among her narrative quilts are Who’s Afraid of Aunt Jemima (1983), the Michael Jackson tribute Who’s Bad? (1988) and her most famous offering, Tar Beach (Part 1 from the Woman on the Bridge series (1988), which is now part the Guggenheim Museum's permanent collection. Her work continues to be exhibited in major museums around the world.' #HiddenFigures #FaithRinggold ****************** Merchandise!
