Europe Lesson III: The Enlightenment
Don't forget to hit the Like and Subscribe videos to make sure you receive notifications about upcoming Literature, Grammar, Reading, Writing, and World History lessons from MrBrayman.Info. Below is the outline of the slides used in the lesson: European Transformations III:The Enlightenment Nicholas Copernicus: Claimed that the Earth rotated around the Sun Johannes Keppler: Planetary motion and Mathematics Galileo Galilei: Telescope, Mathematics Renee Descartes: Cartesian Coordinates, Philosophy of Science—Skepticism and Empiricism Francis Bacon: Philosophy of Science Isaac Newton: Theory of Gravity, Calculus, Laws of Motion The New Struggle between Faith and Reason The struggle between faith in things unseen and reason about what can be seen and logically deduced is an old one in Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and other world religions Science and The Scientific Method intensified this conflict Effects of The Scientific Revolution The Early Industrial Revolution Guild manufacturing: specialized laborers, specific cities and locations Banking shifted economic power towards bankers and merchants Absolutism: The Last Move of an Ancient Idea Traditional ideas of divinely (God-given) kingship go back to Babylon and Sumer Democracy and a respect for the individual (thanks to the Greeks, Romans, and Renaissance) were growing Magna Carta 1215—established an early version of the English Parliament Councils of Nobles or Aristocrats in other Feudal European Kingdoms These did not give power to commoners and peasants (normal everyday folks like you and I) The Birth of European Democracy Gradually, European Parliaments gained more power The Reformation weakened Absolutist ideas The English Civil War and the execution of Charles I by Parliament was a big shift in power English Bill of Rights 1689 American Revolution 1776, Constitution 1788 French Revolution 1789 Ideals of Limited Government, Rights of the Individual, The Rule of Law Effects of Political Changes It's hard to explain this part of history without bias Freedom for people to choose leaders Freedom for people to make decisions about how to run their economic lives and the economic life of the nation Weakening of traditional aristocracies, kings, and other power structures Early ideas of the Nation State as a common people with a common identity The Individual or the Group? Individualism: The belief that the individual—his rights, freedoms, power, ability to choose his own identity and lifestyle—is important You know the roots of this in Classical—Greco-Roman—times Contrast this with traditional aristocracies and royalist political structures The Enlightenment To be enlightened is to have the light inside of yourself (very individualistic) The Enlightenment is the catch-all term for everything you've seen so far: increased individualism, the growth of democracy, the scientific revolution, the demands for reason and science over faith and superstition, freedom, liberty Has this made the world better? Looking Ahead: The American and French Revolutions We'll start Project 5 with these two revolutions, but they somewhat fit into this project because they represent a climax of Enlightenment ideals and trends The American Revolution Older English colonies in North America were growing increasingly resentful of English control Conflicts over taxation (which wasn't that high) and representation in the English Parliament Growing wealth of the colonies led to a sense of empowerment Beliefs in individual choice and freedom were represented in the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, and the war itself The French Revolution French political organization: The Three Estates—The Church, The Nobility (sometimes including the King), The Workers The Workers rebelled against what they saw as collusion by the other two estates Led to the execution of King Louis XVI Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity—very Enlightenment... Lesson Completed—Good Job This completes our look at the transformation of Europe between 1500 and 1800 Consider whether you think that science is more important than faith, and whether the Enlightenment has made the world better Connect this to the lesson on the Renaissance in order to complete your DBQ

Five-storey robot to enlightenment: Dave Smith at TEDxDublin
What if each one of us had a five-storey robot? Well, not literally. But what if cities helped us realize our dreams? Dave Smith has always had an affinity with cultural activity. Eight years ago he set up Kings of Concrete festival, and eventually refurbished an old disused warehouse on Hanover Quay, Dublin into a space that defies description. Mabos was born with the intent to develop a multi-purpose space that continually flips and evolves. This venture into the unknown sparked Dave's fascination with urban planning, development and progression and his drive to discover how we can work within and around these constraints to help make Dublin, and every city a more engaging, entertaining and inspiring place to live. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

One of my favorite sayings is "enlightenment is a group activity." We may visit a new elevated state by grace, but we cannot stay there under our own power. Finding our enlightened state | Andrew Newberg | TEDxPenn
How does the brain function during prayer, meditation, and trance states? Andrew Newberg has conducted hundreds of brain scans of people during these “enlightened” states and found unique patterns of brain activity. He has surveyed 2,000 people to find the essential elements of the enlightenment experience. With these findings, Andrew aims to help people find their own enlightenment, an experience that can radically change and improve your life. Andrew is the Director of Research at the Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University and Adjunct Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. His research has been published in prestigious scientific journals including JAMA, Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, and Frontiers in Psychology, and featured in Newsweek, Time, and the New York Times. He has appeared on Dr. Oz, Good Morning America, ABC World News Tonight, as well as movies including Bill Maher’s “Religulous”; and “Awake: The Life of Yogananda.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. The Neuroscience of Enlightenment, with Dr. Andrew Newberg
Enlightenment is a traditionally mystical and slippery concept, but when it is subjected to the rigors of empirical analysis, there is a lot to be learned about our brains and ourselves. Dr. Andrew Newberg, who has put enlightenment through a battery of scientific tests, says there are actually two kinds of enlightenment: lowercase-e enlightenment, which changes our opinions about the world, and Enlightenment, which changes our essence, i.e. how we think of life, death, God, etc. Capital-e Enlightenment is notable because of how people report the experience anecdotally and how it changes the brain. Whatever sensation accompanies the experience of Enlightenment — whether light, or music, or color — it tends to be the most intense experience a person has had with that element. And this intensity is reflected in the brain's limbic system, which processes emotion, and its parietal lobe, which organizes our sensory information to create sensations of time, space, and self. When people experience Enlightenment, they frequently report losing their sense of self, and scientific analysis confirms that brain activity is a driving cause of this sensation. And while Enlightenment is typically associated with religious individuals like Mother Teresa or the Buddha, people from all walks of life experience essence-changing events — sometimes just walking down the street, says Newberg. What's more, these experiences can be purposefully induced through the use of pharmacological substances like LSD or hallucinogenic mushrooms. And while these experiences may seem aberrant from so-called real life, Dr. Newberg argues that we come hard-wired ready to have them. Perhaps Enlightenment experiences are like a pair of glasses, he says: we are born into the world with bad vision until we experience corrective lenses. Whether these lenses are applied to our eyes or to our brains may matter little in an epistemological sense. Newberg's latest book is How Enlightenment Changes Your Brain: The New Science of Transformation http://www.indiebound.org/book/9781594633454 Read more at BigThink.com: http://bigthink.com/videos/andrew-newberg-neural-enlightenment-101 Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink

Why I stopped pursuing enlightenment | Ricardo Palomeres | TEDxChathamKent
For a really long time, Ricardo was obsessed with the idea of enlightenment, without really understanding what it was. He traveled the world, tried many forms of meditation, and read many books hoping that at some point he would achieve this elusive state. At some point along the way, Ricardo suddenly asked himself something. Why was he in such a hurry to get there, to achieve enlightenment? He realized that it didn’t matter how many spiritual practices he did if he couldn’t enjoy the process and that his search for enlightenment was some kind of escape from his everyday life. So Ricardo decided to stop pursuing it and to focus only on finding contentment in the smaller things; to focus on finding contentment in everyday life. Ricardo is a keynote speaker, leadership coach, and author. He immigrated to the United States from Mexico City after graduating from photography school with the singular focus of building a career that would allow him to explore the world. Later he earned a Film degree at the University of Texas at Austin, then went on to create documentary work in Mexico and China, and to make the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain. His most recent project, Pedal South, entailed leading a team on a two-year cycling expedition from Alaska to Argentina. The purpose was to create a documentary that would give a perspective of the people and landscape of the Americas today. His goal is to spread compassion, knowledge, and wisdom gained through overcoming inconceivable obstacles so people can unlock their potential, achieve what seems impossible, and find contentment. The American Enlightenment
The Enlightenment was an eighteenth century European intellectual movement that had a profound impact on prominent thinkers in late Colonial America, including many of those who were leaders of the American Revolution. Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Paine were three American Founding Fathers who looked up to John Locke and Isaac Newton and sought to put their theories into practice. Jefferson was heavily indebted to John Locke for the ideas of Natural Rights expressed in the Declaration of Independence. This video should be helpful for US History students of all ages and especially great for AP US History.

Spiritual Awakening - Subliminal Messages and Binaural Beats for Enlightenment
Download the audio MP3 version at: https://www.vortex-success.com/downloads/spiritual-awekening/ spiritual awakening and enlightenment are describing a connection to something bigger than you, beyond the ego and the consciousness. It’s about being a whole and feeling a part of the infinite source (or god). Enlightenment awakening occurs when you let go of the fears, cynicism and ego and put your trust in the universe. The base frequencies are 852 hz and 741 hz – both are Solfeggio frequencies. The first 30 minutes begin with alpha10 hz and the last 30 minutes end with theta 7 hz. 852 hz is related to awakening intuition; returning to spiritual order; awareness raising 741 hz is related to cells cleansing, toxins removal and self-expression The subliminal affirmations of this session: I am guided by a divine presence within me The wisdom of the universe if flowing to me and through me I am connected to the harmony of the source my spirituality is expanding and growing each and every day the spiritual awakening I am experiencing allows me to live abundantly in the material world I am a spiritual being living in an abundant world I am a divine expression of the infinite love of the universe The source is providing me all that I want and need I am connected to my higher self my being is becoming more and more enlightened Everything that is happening to me is for my highest good Every one of my experiences brings me closer to the source I am one with God love I am an open channel of infinite love Positive divine energies are entering my life every single day

The Secret of Natural Enlightenment
TALKS FROM MORNING SATSANG ON SEPTEMBER 22, 2012 AT TIRUVANNAMALAI ASHRAM, INDIA Bhagavad Gita (Song of God) is a timeless treatise on the essence of living enlightenment. The Gita was imparted by the enlightened Hindu incarnation Sri Krishna to the warrior-prince Arjuna over 5000 years ago. Amazingly, the spiritual wisdom and life solutions offered in the Gita are so universal and current that even today it is used as a personal transformation guide. In today's talk on Bhagavad Gita, chapter 6, verse 22, Paramahamsa Nithyananda (Swamiji) describes the ultimate state of enlightened lifestyle. When we are completely unclutched in our inner space, and still able to function smoothly in ordinary life, we embody the state of sahaja samadhi, which is the perpetual state of all enlightened masters. Once our kundalini is awakened, we achieve the highest level of consciousness and our spirit naturally flows toward this ultimate destination of sahaja samadhi. TRANSCRIPTIONS:- Bhagavad Gita Chapter 6, Dhyana Yoga, Verse 22 yam labdhvaa chaaparam laabham manyate naadhikam tataha | yasmin-sthito na duhkhena gurunaapi vicaalyate || Translation: Having obtained which one does not esteem any other acquisition as something more and being established in which one is not shaken by even the most grievous suffering. Bhagawan is describing one of the greatest state of advaida experience. Please understand, there are various states, various stages of Samadhi -- Sabija, Nirbija, Savikalpa, Nirvikalpa, Bhava Samadhi. There are various stages of Samadhi. Bhagawan is describing the ultimate Sahaja Samadhi. If you can move your body and mind and relate with the ordinary world as they understand life but completely being established in your nirvikalpa Samadhi, it is called sahaja Samadhi. Please understand, being established in the nirvikalpa Samadhi in your inner space, completely unclutched in the inner space, with that if you are able to move your body and mind in a so-called society's normalcy, that is sahaja samadhi. The most powerful, the ultimate spiritual state, even Gods need to do tapas to achieve this state. Even Gods who achieved their states by the various practices need to do unique special tapas to achieve this state. yam labdhvaa chaaparam laabham manyate naadhikam tataha | yasmin-sthito na duhkhena gurunaapi vicaalyate || Having obtained which state one does not esteem any other acquisition as something more and being established in which state one is not shaken by even the most grievous suffering is Sahaja Samadhi. We call it Sahaja Sthithi. The state where the space where thoughts are not required for the smooth functioning of your body and even mind. Mind can function without thoughts. Please understand, even though usually the mind is bunch of thoughts it can function without thoughts. You may ask, "How can mind which is bunch of thoughts can function without thoughts." Just by the presence of the super consciousness, without any agitation or the after effects and side effects which will be usually created by thoughts, mind can function, mind can flow. Unless the mind functions you wont even be able to stand, sit and walk. It functions without any thoughts. No thought. No movement. That is why I always tell people; I am not existing as you think of me. Same way, after I leave the body I am not going to be absent as you think of the absence. Understand, an enlightened master, a person who is established in sahaja samadhi, he will not be present as you understand presence, he will not be absent as you understand absence. Krishna says very beautifully, whoever understands the way I function, will be liberated. Understand he says, if you understand how I am functioning you will be liberated. How funny it is! You may think, "Ah! How will I be liberated if I know how Krishna is functioning". You will understand your mind is also functioning in the same way and just your ignorance creates complication. You will just unclutch that very moment. "Wow! This is what! Then why was I connecting all the thoughts unnecessarily and creating constant suffering for me. I wasted my time creating constant suffering for myself." When you create constant suffering for you, even the good thing you want to do to others will become suffering for them and you will cry, "Oh! Even if I do good things people take it bad." They are not taking it bad; you are doing it as bad even though you plan good. But when you stop torturing yourself, when you stop giving suffering to you, even if you do something what you think or you may feel as bad, will end up as good. When an enlightened master uses his trishool even then He only heals. When an ordinary man even if he gives gift he only destroys others. In Calcutta, when I was staying, I saw, I was staying in the banks of the Ganges; two neighbours, every day morning there will be a fight. They will scream in that village Bengali. Scream means really scream.

Sadhguru On What is Enlightenment
Englightenment is homecoming - coming back to your original nature. In today's world, people are trapped in their own minds, constantly thinking about what needs to be done next and pursuing various activity because we are taught that we can't just sit and do nothing. True happiness comes when people get a break from all the noise in their heads. If we achieve that escape, we have achieved enlightenment. ☻ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/IshaUSA ☻ Twitter: https://twitter.com/IshaUSA ☻ Isha USA Official Website: https://www.ishafoundation.org/us/ ☻ Isha USA Online Shop: http://www.ishashoppe.com/USA/ SUBSCRIBE for more Isha USA content: http://bit.ly/IshaUS

Stop Trying To Be Loving | David R. Hawkins Removing Obstacles To Enlightenment | My Lesson
This is a counterintuitive one. Took me about a year to realize this. I was watching this David R. Hawkins Youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBjJi0S49ic In this video, David talks about removing the obstacles of the ego to then turn up the fire of the heart to reach enlightenment. He speaks strongly that people are "full of it" when saying they are loving, pious people. He says oh, what about to your ex wife? Your mother in law? (I don't have either, but he is demonstrating that we display selective love.) The idea of "trying" to do loving things beyond what would actually just happen creates a belief system that can be dangerous because, in his words, true love comes with it a security system. It's a moment for reflection, the times I stretched myself thin trying to portray something I was actually not just to have some control over the results the universe gave me. Now since I am still in a pretty selfish paradigm, I am going forward with these ideas because it is the medicine I need now to continue my path. The French Revolution: Crash Course World History #29
In which John Green examines the French Revolution, and gets into how and why it differed from the American Revolution. Was it the serial authoritarian regimes? The guillotine? The Reign of Terror? All of this and more contributed to the French Revolution not being quite as revolutionary as it could have been. France endured multiple constitutions, the heads of heads of state literally rolled, and then they ended up with a megalomaniacal little emperor by the name of Napoleon. But how did all of this change the world, and how did it lead to other, more successful revolutions around the world? Watch this video and find out. Spoiler alert: Marie Antoinette never said, "Let them eat cake." Sorry. The Renaissance: Was it a Thing? - Crash Course World History #22
In which John Green teaches you about the European Renaissance. European learning changed the world in the 15th and 16th century, but was it a cultural revolution, or an evolution? We'd argue that any cultural shift that occurs over a couple of hundred years isn't too overwhelming to the people who live through it. In retrospect though, the cultural bloom in Europe during this time was pretty impressive. In addition to investigating what caused the Renaissance and who benefitted from the changes that occurred, John will tell you just how the Ninja Turtles got mixed up in all this.
