The Federal TEACH Grant

04:00
This video discusses the Federal TEACH Grant. The TEACH Grant provides free money to undergraduate or graduate students attending college in the United States who plan to become a teacher after finishing school and are willing to complete a service requirement. TEACH Grant recipients are required to teach full-time for 4 out of the 8 years after they leave school as a highly qualified teacher at a low-income school or educational agency in a high-need field. The video discusses these requirements in more detail and highlights several situations that qualify students for a suspension of the teaching requirement. If students do not comply with the service requirement, their TEACH grant converts to an unsubsidized student loan and they become responsible for any interest that would have accrued since they received the TEACH Grant (as well as any interest going forward). What are the SCM Supply Chain Management and Purchasing Management main functions? When we talk about supply chain, we are talking about several things, how materials arrive in the company. How companies receive, handle, and storage. How supply orders are processed. How the inventory is managed. How materials are stocked. What pace they are used in the production process. And then, how end products are packed, shipped and delivered to customers. The question is, where is the purchasing work in the SCM umbrella? I would say, all over. But, before going deeper in the purchasing, let’s define better the diffrences between supply chain and purchasing. Rethink Tipping: Bruce McAdams at TEDxGuelphU

20:22
Like so many in the restaurant business, Bruce McAdams first job was as a dishwasher at a local steakhouse back in 1979. He enjoyed the business so much he went to school to study it, graduating from the University of Guelph's School of Hotel and Food Administration in 1989. Upon completion of his studies McAdams joined Darden Restaurants where he spent seven years working in both Operations and Training. In 1997, McAdams joined the upstart and entrepreneurial Oliver & Bonacini Restaurants. Over an 11 year career with that company he worked in various roles serving most recently as its Vice President of Operations until 2008. It is during this time McAdams co- founded the Ontario Hostelry Institutes Top 30 under and 30, a program that recognizes Ontario's brightest young hospitality leaders. After completing a Masters of Arts in Leadership, McAdams joined the faculty of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management in January of 2009. He currently teaches courses in Strategic Management and Quality Service Management at both the undergraduate and MBA levels. In the fall of 2009 McAdams started a program called Garden2Table which involves the promotion of food education to children in the greater Guelph Community. To date, this program has provided over 1000 children with hands on, 'real food' experiences. In 2011, McAdams started the University of Guelph Sustainable Restaurant Project (UGSRP). Initially created to incorporate more 'sustainable' curriculum at the school, UGSRP has evolved to become a project whose goal is to generate research regarding sustainable restaurant practices while also acting as a 'hub' of information and education for industry stakeholders. Research that McAdams and his colleague Dr. Mike von Massow have conducted on 'tipping' has been featured on CBC Radio, Foodservice and Hospitality Magazine and major newspapers across the country including The Globe and Mail.

An insider’s plan for rehabilitating the juvenile justice system | Jeff Wallace | TEDxNaperville

18:24
Juveniles committing crimes sometime get treated like adults in the penile system. Sometimes this seems logical and the “right thing to do”. But is it? Jeff Wallace takes you through what happens when you treat a juvenile like an adult in this riveting personal story. Jeff has spent most of his life studying the effects of the policy and procedures followed by the criminal justice system on at-risk youth – first, as one of those youths and then, through his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Criminal Justice. At work, he’s a Group Care Manager who guides a team at a non-profit organization, working to strengthen children, families and individuals by providing quality services that engage community resources to create effective solutions. He is also a Youth Counselor at a county detention center in Iowa and a Crisis Interventionist for the Davenport police department and local hospitals. He is driven to change the way youthful offenders are sentenced, so there will be more cases of these youngsters being able to find their true path in life. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

08 common Interview question and answers - Job Interview Skills

12:25
08 common Interview question and answers - Job Interview Skills 1. "Tell me a little about yourself." You should take this opportunity to show your communication skills by speaking clearly and concisely in an organized manner. Because there is no right or wrong answer for this question, it is important to appear friendly. 2. "What are your strengths?" This is a popular interview question. They want to know what you think of yourself. Although this is a general question, there is a wrong and right answer. The wrong answer is a generic answer saying you are organized and friendly. Although it will not hurt you during the interview, it will certainly not help you either. Answer this question based on the type of job you are applying for. 3. "What are your weaknesses?" For this answer, you should display a weakness that can be seen as a strength. There are many types of answers that will work. Some answers will be good answers for certain jobs, while the same answer will be a bad answer for a different job. Select an answer that will work for the position you are applying for. 4. "Where do you see yourself in five years?" This question primarily depends on where you are in your career. A person with 5 years of experience will have different goals than a person with no work experience. This question is asked to see how serious a candidate is about his or her career. Some people might not know their goals, and some people might have goals of becoming rich and retiring early. Those are incorrect answers for this question. The type of answer you want to give is an ambitious answer that shows you really love your career. A good interviewer will read between the lines and find out if a person is going to be a hard worker or just a mediocre one. Being descriptive and shooting for a big goal is something interviewers want to hear. 5. "What do you know about our company?" A typical job interview question, asked to find out how much company research you have conducted, is "What do you know about this company?" Prepare in advance, and in a word, research, so you can provide relevant and current information about your prospective employer to the interviewer. 6. "Are you good at dealing with change?" Dealing with change is common in the work place. A simple yes will not be sufficient to impress the interviewer. This is another type of question where everyone will have similar answers. Of course everyone is going to claim being excellent dealing with change. You got to communicate that you are really good at dealing with change. 7. "Do you work well under pressure?" In most cases, the best answer to this question is answering yes. Working well under pressure is a good trait to have. However, I think if you answer that you work the same with pressure and without pressure, the interviewer will be more impressed. However, you will need to explain in words why this is better. 8. "How do you make important decisions?" There are many ways to answer this question, and if you have a reasonable method of making decisions, it will probably be sufficient. One answer I thought of included not being afraid of asking your manager. You can follow up by saying even the best needs mentoring, and you always want to improve. So basically, this could work as an answer, but depending on the job, you might have a better shot with an answer like my example.
TEDxHISD -- Dr. Brad Hoge - New Century Energy: Fulfilling the Promise of Game-Based Learning

16:14
Dr. Brad Hoge is the Director of HUNSTEM and an Assistant Professor of natural science and science education in the Department of Natural Sciences at The University of Houston - Downtown. Dr. Hoge teaches science content courses for pre-service teachers at the University of Houston -- Downtown (UHD). These courses incorporate project-based learning (PBL) into instruction, and utilize web-based learning community tools from HUNSTEM (Houston Urban Network for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) into classroom projects. He has a M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction and post-baccalaureate teacher certification in both Texas and Louisiana. Dr. Hoge's PhD is in biogeochemistry. He conducts research with undergraduate students focusing on the ecological succession of mitigated wetlands. The New Century Energy Game (NCE) developed by Tietronix, Inc. for the Houston Independent School District (HISD) is a immersive micromanagement computer game which will provide a potentially transformative learning experience to 8-10th grade students NCE combines aspects of strategy games and construction and management games, requiring players to build energy companies that must meet the needs of cities throughout the US over the next 50 years. The talk will focus particularly on how GBL is capable of accomplishing the lofty goals of inquiry-based teaching and problem-based learning. NCE will take smart gaming to the next level by encouraging the promises of PBL through GBL. NCE will fulfill the promise of PBL/GBL by not only engaging students in content lessons, but also in the "construction" of advanced knowledge and skills. This will make NCE transformative not only for student learning and constructivist pedagogy, but also for technology integration into the classroom and learning community involvement in curriculum development. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. 10:35
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. What is the secret of success in some of the best education systems in the world? In his ambitious talk, Alex Wirth discusses the critical importance of qualified teachers in the improvement of American education. His proposal for a "National Teaching Academy" seeks to solve educational inequities by providing more quality teachers, trained specifically to meet the challenges faced in the classroom. Alex Wirth is an advocate for youth involvement in government, community service, and service-learning. Alex is the Chair of the Campaign for a Presidential Youth Council and the Harvard Public Opinion Project. He was appointed by Secretary Clinton to the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO as the youngest member in history. Alex is a blogger for the Huffington Post, founder of the Youth Creating Action Network, and an active tweeter (@amaliowirth). He is currently a member of the Forum for Youth Investment Board of Directors and has served on the youth council's of DoSomething.org, Youth Service America, State Farm, and the Democratic National Committee. Alex has spoken at the United Nations, the Clinton Global Initiative, the World Forum for Democracy, and the National Education Association. Alex is currently a junior at Harvard University. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
