My father : Moctesuma Esparza at TEDxBoyleHeights 2014

17:03
Moctesuma honors his dad -- Don Francisco! A personal and family narrative beginning in the time of Flores Magon, a Mexican revolutionary , and concluding on Mocte's youthful activism for social justice. A philospher, who taught Mocte that death is a new beginning, not sorrow or grief. His hero, teacher of history, activism and politics, his "compadre" and Executive Chef of La Scala. Listen to Moctesuma recount the time spent together walking Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles streets to watch movies, or the "Variedad" and eating together at Clifton's Cafeteria -- a precious time together. Learn about "Tongolele", "Ladino" and "conversos", "Maria Felix" and his dad's lima bean soup Elizabeth Taylor demanded to have while filming Cleopatra. It is a sweet story of Los Angeles & Boyle Heights immigrants' perseverance and family remembrances. An award-winning producer, entertainment executive, entrepreneur and community activist. Moctesuma Esparza is well known for his contributions to the movie industry and commitment to creating opportunities for Latinos everywhere. He is an American film producer and the CEO of Maya Cinemas, a theater chain. He has served on: the Corporate Board of Directors of the Motion Picture Television Fund, the Board of Directors of the Museum of Latin American Art, a Trustee of the California State University System. a commissioner to the Los Angeles City Retirement System. American History - Part 150 - Wilson - Mexican Revolution - Clouds of War in Europe

12:47
Welcome to THE MAKING OF A NATION-- American history in VOA Special English. Mexico had been ruled for many years by Porfirio Diaz. As Diaz grew older, his power began to weaken. In 1911, a revolt broke out. It was led by Francisco Madero, the leader of a land reform movement. Diaz understood he could not win. He resigned and fled the country. Madero declared himself president. However, powerful groups in Mexico opposed him. In a short time, one of his own generals, Victoriano Huerta, arrested him. Madero was murdered soon after Huerta seized power. President Wilson refused to recognize Huerta's government. He believed other forces would rise up against him. Wilson was right. Another revolt began, led by General Venustiano Carranza. Wilson offered aid to Carranza. Carranza rejected the offer. He was afraid of American interference in Mexico. He told Wilson that Mexican troops would do all the fighting. He only wanted guns and ammunition. American forces did, however, get involved in the conflict. President Wilson learned that a ship from Germany was bringing supplies to the Huerta government. The ship would land at the Mexican port of Vera Cruz. Wilson ordered the United States Navy to seize and occupy the port. The move started a storm of criticism in the United States and throughout Latin America. Many people denounced President Wilson. They called him an imperialist and a fool. They what right did the United States have to interfere in Mexico. Wilson finally stopped American military action in Mexico. He tried to settle the dispute at an international conference at Niagara Falls, Canada. The effort failed. The conference did not produce a settlement. While the diplomats were talking, Carranza's revolutionary forces were fighting. They moved on Mexico City, the capital. President Huerta fled. Carranza formed a new government. The new government began to split apart almost immediately. Another general, Francisco "Pancho" Villa, tried to seize power. He forced Carranza out of Mexico City. Then he formed his own government. President Wilson recognized Villa and his government. Carranza, however, refused to give up. Day by day, his army grew stronger. He forced Villa to retreat. Then President Wilson recognized Carranza's government. Like Carranza, Villa refused to give up. He decided to try to start a war between Mexico and the United States. Pancho Villa wanted the United States to attack Carranza. Then he would step in to lead Mexican forces in battle. That would make him a hero. With this plan in mind, Pancho Villa attacked an American town across the border in Texas. He killed 19 persons. President Wilson immediately ordered a large American force to find and punish Villa. At first, Carranza welcomed the move. Villa was his enemy. He wanted him captured. Then Carranza began to fear that the American troops might threaten his government. He demanded the withdrawal of all American soldiers from Mexico. Tensions increased between the two countries. Villa's forces attacked another town in Texas. President Wilson considered asking Congress to declare war. But the crisis cooled down before then. American forces were withdrawn. And the people of Mexico elected a new government. They chose Carranza as President. Tensions were growing between several groups of nations. They were on the edge of what would become World War One. The major powers in Europe had been threatening each other for years. But they had not fought for more than 40 years. Most Americans believed there would never be another European war. Such a war would be unbelievably destructive. Millions would die. No nation would win. Europe depended on a balance of power to keep the peace. On one side were the central powers-- Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. On the other side were the members of the triple entente-- Britain, France, and Russia. Each side made every effort to win the support of Europe's smaller nations. A number of nations refused to join either side. The neutrals included Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the Scandinavian countries. The whole continent seemed ready to explode. The spark that set off the explosion came in the city of Sarajevo. The date was June 18th, 1914. Sarajevo had been taken over by Austria. And the Archduke of Austria -- Ferdinand-- had come for a visit. Ferdinand was expected to become the next emperor of Austria. Seven young extremists from the area decided to assassinate the Archduke to protest Austrian control. One of the extremists threw a bomb at the royal family. The bomb missed its target. But another extremist shot at the group. He killed both the Archduke and the Archduke's wife. The assassinations in Sarajevo started a series of events that quickly brought war to all of Europe. Soon the continent was covered with armies, battles, and death. The war in Europe forced President Wilson to face the greatest crisis of his Presidency. That will be our story next week.

Cinco de Mayo - Holidays and Traditions - One Minute History

01:00
Cinco De Mayo celebrates Mexico’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla. Contrary to popular belief, it has nothing to do with Mexican Independence. After losing half of its national territory to the United States during the Mexican-American War and enduring the Reform War at home, Mexico was bankrupt. President Benito Juarez suspended repayment of foreign debts to address the crisis. France, under Napoleon’s leadership, saw this as an opportunity to establish an empire that would favor French interests. On May 5, 1862, French troops attacked the city of Puebla, but they were repelled by the much smaller and poorly equipped Mexican army, led by Ignacio Zaragoza. The Battle of Puebla was a symbolic victory for Mexico, helping to bolster resistance to French occupation. Today, Cinco De Mayo is more widely celebrated in the United States than in Mexico. Lessons of October

41:12
The International Marxist Tendency has been celebrating the centenary of the Russian Revolution all year, releasing articles, videos and reading guides to commemorate the occasion. Around the day of the anniversary itself (7 November by the modern calendar), we hosted a series of meetings, parties and events throughout the world. We have already published reports from Mexico, Italy, Austria and Brazil, and in the coming days will release more reports of how comrades across the international celebrated the greatest event in human history... The IMT Netherlands organised its very first day school to celebrate the special occasion of the 100th anniversary of the October revolution. The day school was held in the city Utrecht and started in the morning around 10am, and lasted until 6 in the evening. During the sessions more than 20 people participated, including many fresh faces. Most were very new to the ideas of Marxism, and afterwards we received great feedback about how inspirational they found the day. Join IMT: https://www.marxist.com/join-us.htm

Exhibition talk: A Revolution in Wood: The Bresler Collection

53:36
A Revolution in Wood celebrates the magnificent gift of sixty-six pieces of turned and carved wood to the Smithsonian American Art Museum by the noted collectors, Fleur and Charles Bresler. Works by some of the best-known wood artists in the United States highlight the expressive capacity of craft's most organic material, and display wood turning's growing sophistication. Nearly half of the artworks in the exhibition will be on public display for the first time. Collector Fleur Bresler has formed unique relationships with each of the artists in A Revolution in Wood: The Bresler Collection. Today, she and wood artists Michelle Holzapfel, Mark Lindquist, and Norm Sartorius share their stories in this round-table discussion moderated by curator Nicholas Bell.

Leon Trotsky - The life of a revolutionary

45:55
To mark the centenary of the Russian Revolution, the International Marxist Tendency and In Defence of October campaign present this original documentary celebrating the life and accomplishments of one of the revolution’s main leaders: Leon Trotsky. Alan Woods (editor of the In Defence of Marxism website) narrates Trotsky’s extraordinary career; from his early years as a revolutionary writer and activist, to his leading role alongside Lenin in the October Revolution and Russian Civil War, to his expulsion from Russia and eventual assassination by the murderous Stalinist regime. Featuring footage from the Trotsky museum in Coyoacán Mexico, and first-hand accounts from Trotsky’s grandson, Esteban Volkov, this film is a testament to one of history’s great revolutionaries – whose deeds and ideas are a “shining beacon to all of humankind.” To find out more about Leon Trotsky and his ideas visit: www.marxist.com www.bolshevik.info

Tea, Taxes, and The American Revolution: Crash Course World History #28

11:27
In which John Green teaches you about the American Revolution and the American Revolutionary War, which it turns out were two different things. John goes over the issues and events that precipitated rebellion in Britain's American colonies, and he also explores the ideas that laid the groundwork for the new American democracy. Find out how the tax bill from the Seven Years War fomented an uprising, how the Enlightenment influenced the Founding Fathers, and who were the winners and losers in this conflict.(hint: many of the people living in the Colonies ended up losers) The Revolution purportedly brought freedom and equality to the Thirteen Colonies, but they weren't equally distributed. Also, you'll learn about America's love affair with commemorative ceramics and what happens when rich white guys take the reins from reins white guys, and put together a society of, by, and for rich white guys. 12. Civil War

43:30
The American Revolution (HIST 116) Professor Freeman concludes the discussion of the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration was widely circulated and read aloud throughout the colonies. Professor Freeman argues that by 1775-1776, British and American citizens were operating under different assumptions about how the conflict between them could be resolved. The American colonists began to organize themselves for defensive measures against an aggressive British state. Meanwhile, the British assumed that the rebels were a minority group, and if they could suppress this radical minority through an impressive display of force, the rest of the colonists would submit to their governance again. Spring of 1775 saw the beginnings of military conflict between the British army and colonial militias, with fighting at Lexington, Concord, and Breed's Hill. As a result, the colonists began to seriously consider the need for independence, and the Continental Congress began the process of organizing a war. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Decolonizing Language Revitalization

01:56:24
September 25, 2013 - How has Eurocentric anthropology and linguistics affected the way we interpret our elders and ancestors who share their cultural knowledge with foreign researchers? Join us for a presentation with Khelsilem Rivers and April Charlo, indigenous peoples from community-based and cultural revitalization backgrounds, who will be discussing decolonization of language revitalization. Their presentation and open dialogue will address the context of rapid language loss and decline, and how colonization has affected or is embedded in the strategies of revitalization. In an effort to revitalize Indigenous languages, communities may have unknowingly adopted or assimilated colonized ways of thinking as they invest interest and attempt to repair or restore ties to culture and language. Are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha, et all with an English-mind or are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha with a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyaw, Kanien'keháka mind? Indigenous languages represent one of the darkest ways in which ethnocide and cultural genocide have occurred. It is expected in the next twenty-five years over 700 of the worlds Indigenous languages will be forgotten. In the Vancouver area alone, the two Indigenous languages are considered critical endangered; Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) language has five to seven fluent speakers and hən̓q̓əmin̓əm has one fluent speaker left. Decolonizing Language Revitalization aims to put forward perspectives of shifting values, cultural understandings, and impacts on community. It is the stories we tell ourselves (as a people) that impacts who we believe we are, and then who we become. But if the stories -- even including, or especially the Indigenous ones -- are filtered through colonialism, we have become a different people because of it. April Charlo from Bitterroot Salish people and is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Montana. Khelsilem Rivers is a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh-Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw language revitalization activist from Vancouver. Advancing the Bolivarian Revolution

Advancing the Bolivarian Revolution: Addressing the Crisis in Venezuela A discussion with Venezuelan Diplomats Carlos J. Ron and Jesus “Chucho” Garcia On Monday, March 5th, Cooperation Jackson members gathered to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the untimely passing of Venezuelan President and revolutionary, Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias, and the ongoing advance of the Bolivarian revolutionary process. CJ was joined by the Chargé d'Affaires at the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela's embassy in Washington, D.C., Carlos J. Ron, and the Venezuelan consul in New Orleans, Jesus “Chucho” Garcia, to discuss the mounting threats confronting the Bolivarian revolution from the Trump administration and the US government and its proxies—the governments of Brazil and Mexico—who are amassing military forces along their borders with Venezuela and threatening to invade. Or as in the case of Mexico are working at the behest of the US government to politically isolate the Venezuelan government from its allies in the Caribbean and throughout Latin America. The Bolivarian revolutionary process has been and remains a key source of inspiration and ideas for Cooperation Jackson. It was one of many intellectual sources of the Jackson-Kush Plan; for elements of the practice of participatory, direct and protagonistic democracy that we are experimenting with our Transition Assemblies; for cooperative development on a mass scale; and for the development of innovative social exchanges like the mass Trueke or cooperative producer markets or swap meets that are being organized throughout the country; for the incorporation of African and indigenous traditional knowledge(s) into all field of social production and reproduction; and more! The aim of the discussion is to figure out concrete ways the people and social movements of Jackson can stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela and continue to build deeper people-to-people relations between the people of Venezuela and Jackson.

1947 DOCUMENTARY about COMMUNICATIONS SMOKE SIGNALS to TELEGRAPH & TELEPHONE 47354

14:38
“Communications: The Story of Communications” is a 1947 20th Century Fox black-and-white production explaining the importance of communication to mankind. Narrated by radio and television announcer Nelson Case, the film opens with scenes of street celebrations at mark 00:50 as residents celebrate news of an unidentified event (though likely the end of World War II). Printing presses run off newspaper copies as newsboys rush into the streets, “shouting a story that everyone knows already.” Scenes of wireless radio sending the news around the world follows at mark 1:50, and even in the deepest jungles, “centuries are bridged as the story carried by radio is picked up by the sound of ancient drums.” Drums, were are told, were some of mankind’s earliest forms of communication as their sound carried news long distances. Written languages (shown in the form of hieroglyphics) follows at mark 02:52, as are handwritten Greek scrolls and Roman tablets, until Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of the movable-type printing press in the 15th century. The film continues to trace the history of communication, including a nod to the use of carrier pigeons at mark 03:45, cannon shots, and smoke signals. We learn of messages in the Old West sent via stagecoach or the Pony Express until the coming of the telegraph (mark 05:35) in 1840 by Samuel Morse. By the early 19th century the telegraph pole was part of the American landscape, stretching from the Eastern seacoast to California. That changed in 1876 with the patenting of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell as we see a room of switchboard operators at mark 06:28 and the stretching of telephone wire across the country. Underground and underwater transcontinental cables follow, as does a discussion of the first signals of wireless radio used in 1895 (mark 08:10) by Guglielmo Marconi. He would go on to be credited as the inventor of a new medium — radio. America’s first commercial broadcasts would follow in the 1920s, we’re told at mark 09:25, carrying news and entertainment to homes. “Another fantastic communication dream that came true is television,” the audience is told at mark 10:57, as narrator praises the idea of broadcasting pictures — like sound — through the air and we see images of football games and newsreel footage. An early TV is shown. The importance of a teletype machine in getting news to a newsroom and out to the public is covered at mark 12:15. Even when those links are broken, work crews stand at the ready to repair them, we are told, to continue the never-ending flow of communications. We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? Tell people what it is and what they can see by writing something for example: "01:00:12:00 -- President Roosevelt is seen meeting with Winston Churchill at the Quebec Conference." This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Education-2008 Enlace Test

10:03
Monday 4/14 President Calderón at Inaugural Ceremony of National Week of Evaluation and Application of Enlace Speech: Education is what makes a country great, and the basis of a better life. That is why I am delighted to start this week with the implementation of the 2008 Enlace Test. The test is designed to see how well the Mexican government is working as regards education; it is not intended to pressure children, it does not count towards their final grade or moving up a year, it is simply an examination of the National Education System. This time, as mentioned earlier, the test has several different features from last year. We need, let's see if we can achieve this, a reform that will enable Mexico to educate its students well, preparing them for life and work and for the competitive world of the 21st century. I know that by working together: Federal Government, teachers, the Teachers' Union, parents and state governments will not only be able to achieve quality education at the pre-school, primary and secondary level, but also establish the bases for the new 21st century Mexican school. In order to live better, we need to reform education in Mexico so that everyone does his or her part in enabling Mexican children to receive the best possible education so that soon, in the medium term, Mexican education will be among the best in the world. Let us make this education reform integral; let us do it together and celebrate the 200 years of National Independence with a renewed education system, and may one of the fruits of the Centenary of the Mexican Revolution be the type of education the revolutionaries fought for.
