Welcome to Today in History, your daily dose of fun facts, conspiracies and all that good stuff! On this episode: November 20 in History. What happened on November 20 in history? Enjoy our fun videos & discover the fun side of history! New video daily! Subscribe: http://www.youtube.com/user/gonutsKOKONUZZ?sub_confirmation=1 Topics Included on this Video for November 20 in History: 1. Beginning of the Mexican Revolution (November 20th 1910). November 20th 1910 marks the beginning of the Mexican Revolution. Before that day Mexico had suffered 34 years of dictatorship under Porfirio Diaz. The economy had been growing but the rich were richer and the poor were poorer (yeah, sounds familiar right?) so discontent kept growing despite a systematic silencing of any opposition. When Diaz announced in an interview that he would not run for re-election, the opposition, led by Francisco Madero, became more active and gained fast support, which made Diaz go back on his word and impression Madero just before the elections. However, Madero escaped to the United States shortly after and from San Antonio issued the Plan de San Luis de Potosi where he called for a rise to national arms on November 20th which sparked a Revolution that would lead to the proclamation of the Mexican Constitution and that forged pop culture legends such as Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa. 2. Release of Windows 1.0 (November 20th 1985). A different type of revolution happened on November 20th 1985, when as most you geeks will already know, Windows 1.0 was released. This year marks the 30th anniversary, so if you own any device running Windows, celebrate it this Friday! Take your device out on a date, get some cake… you know make the device feel special! Anyway, back to Windows 1.0. Not surprisingly the system was not the prettiest, coolest or best performing operating system in the market but as with many other things, somehow Bill Gates and Microsoft pulled it off and stablished it as the dominant system around the globe. However, initial reception was poor. Critics felt that the system did not meet their expectations and suffered from performance issues, really? Windows performance issues? No way! Did you mean? The horrible blue screen of death. Well for the better or for the worse, Windows did make a difference, so Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday… ok this is weird. KINO the pig is the conductor of the show, but for the other visual support we have used content found online (and sometimes we have altered it to make it relevant and funny). We have tried to get as much as possible from public domain and the rest most is parody. However since on Google Images it is hard to tell, we surely end up with some material made by someone else and we would have liked to list all the sources but honestly, the list would be endless, so if you want to get some image, let us know in the comments and if the original work is yours and you would like us to mention, let us know and we will happily do so In any case, we will never delete or cover any source printed on the images. * The KOKONUZZ Channel features KINO, LUPPO, FIN, GINA, HARI, OTTO and KOO (and sometimes also parodies of celebrities/popular characters). The International Marxist Tendency has been celebrating the centenary of the Russian Revolution all year, releasing articles, videos and reading guides to commemorate the occasion. Around the day of the anniversary itself (7 November by the modern calendar), we hosted a series of meetings, parties and events throughout the world. We have already published reports from Mexico, Italy, Austria and Brazil, and in the coming days will release more reports of how comrades across the international celebrated the greatest event in human history... The IMT Netherlands organised its very first day school to celebrate the special occasion of the 100th anniversary of the October revolution. The day school was held in the city Utrecht and started in the morning around 10am, and lasted until 6 in the evening. During the sessions more than 20 people participated, including many fresh faces. Most were very new to the ideas of Marxism, and afterwards we received great feedback about how inspirational they found the day. Join IMT: https://www.marxist.com/join-us.htm

This summer marks the centennial of the outbreak of World War I, perhaps the most transformative war in history. While the wars of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars harnessed national populations to the war effort in a way not previously seen since the emergence of the modern states system, WWI combined the mobilization of both populations and industrial power, enhanced by technology, to produce a most lethal form of warfare. WWI also redrew the map of Europe and created the modern Middle East, as it led to the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Russian Empire, and the Ottoman Empire, thereby unleashing nationalism the disruptive characteristics of which still plague us today. It also paved the way for the great ideological conflicts of the 20th century by unleashing the forces of state-based communism and fascism. To commemorate the outbreak of The Great War, FPRI and ROA will present a workshop offering presentations by three eminent scholars of the war. Michael Neiberg of the US Army War College will discuss the factors that led to the outbreak of the war. John Schindler of the US Naval War College will discuss the often overlooked role of Austria-Hungary in the war and the Eastern and Italian fronts. Kate Epstein of Rutgers University-Camden will discuss the role of pre-war British defense policy in the outbreak of the conflict. Mac Owens, editor of Orbis and professor at the Naval War College, will moderate the panel.

In which John Green talks about the many revolutions of Latin America in the 19th century. At the beginning of the 1800s, Latin America was firmly under the control of Spain and Portugal. The revolutionary zeal that had recently created the United States and had taken off Louis XVI's head in France arrived in South America, and a racially diverse group of people who felt more South American than European took over. John covers the soft revolution of Brazil, in which Prince Pedro boldly seized power from his father, but promised to give it back if King João ever returned to Brazil. He also covers the decidedly more violent revolutions in Mexico, Venezuela, and Argentina. Watch the video to see Simón Bolívar's dream of a United South America crushed, even as he manages to liberate a bunch of countries and get two currencies and about a thousand schools and parks named after him. To mark the centenary of the Russian Revolution, the International Marxist Tendency and In Defence of October campaign present this original documentary celebrating the life and accomplishments of one of the revolution’s main leaders: Leon Trotsky. Alan Woods (editor of the In Defence of Marxism website) narrates Trotsky’s extraordinary career; from his early years as a revolutionary writer and activist, to his leading role alongside Lenin in the October Revolution and Russian Civil War, to his expulsion from Russia and eventual assassination by the murderous Stalinist regime. Featuring footage from the Trotsky museum in Coyoacán Mexico, and first-hand accounts from Trotsky’s grandson, Esteban Volkov, this film is a testament to one of history’s great revolutionaries – whose deeds and ideas are a “shining beacon to all of humankind.” To find out more about Leon Trotsky and his ideas visit: www.marxist.com www.bolshevik.info

The Tlatelolco Massacre remains one of the most terrible things the PRI government has ever done. Some people argue that if it wasn't for the Mexico City Olympics and the protests of the summer of 1968, things may have been different. Others argue that tensions between the PRI and its own people would have resulted in tragedy eventually. In 2017, it's difficult to say what could have been done to prevent the Tlatelolco Massacre. People always imagine that, if they went back in time, they could change the past with a few small actions. The lesson to learn from the Tlatelolco Massacre is that -- if this is true -- it's equally possible to make the future better with just a small actions.

The American Revolution (HIST 116) Professor Freeman concludes the discussion of the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration was widely circulated and read aloud throughout the colonies. Professor Freeman argues that by 1775-1776, British and American citizens were operating under different assumptions about how the conflict between them could be resolved. The American colonists began to organize themselves for defensive measures against an aggressive British state. Meanwhile, the British assumed that the rebels were a minority group, and if they could suppress this radical minority through an impressive display of force, the rest of the colonists would submit to their governance again. Spring of 1775 saw the beginnings of military conflict between the British army and colonial militias, with fighting at Lexington, Concord, and Breed's Hill. As a result, the colonists began to seriously consider the need for independence, and the Continental Congress began the process of organizing a war. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Frida Kahlo Self-Portrait Paintings, An Mexican Painter - Authentic Hand Painted Canvas Art (Frida Kahlo Oil Paintings) Free Shipping - Link Below...... http://www.FamousArtistsofHistory.com/FridaKahlooilpaintings.php - Video Testimonials (100s) on Authentic Hand Painted Canvas Art Paintings....... http://www.FamousArtistsofHistory.com/VideoTestimonialsOnOilPaintingReproductions.php Frida Kahlo de Rivera (born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón; July 6, 1907 -- July 13, 1954) was a Mexican painter, born in Coyoacán, who is best known for her self-portraits. Kahlo's life began and ended in Mexico City, in her home known as the Blue House. She gave her birth date as July 7, 1910, but her birth certificate shows July 6, 1907. Kahlo had allegedly wanted the year of her birth to coincide with the year of the beginning of the Mexican revolution so that her life would begin with the birth of modern Mexico. Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form. Mexican culture and Amerindian cultural tradition are important in her work, which has been sometimes characterized as Naïve art or folk art. Her work has also been described as "surrealist", and in 1938 André Breton, principal initiator of the surrealist movement, described Kahlo's art as a "ribbon around a bomb". Kahlo had a volatile marriage with the famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera. She suffered lifelong health problems. Many of her health problems were the result of a traffic accident she survived as a teenager. Recovering from her injuries isolated her from other people and this isolation influenced her works, many of which are self-portraits of one sort or another. Kahlo suggested, "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best." She also stated, "I was born a bitch. I was born a painter. Aside from the 1939 acquisition by the Louvre, Kahlo's work was not widely acclaimed until decades after her death. Often she was remembered only as Diego Rivera's wife. It was not until the end of of the 1970s and the early 1980s, when the artistic style in Mexico known as Neomexicanismo began, that she became well-known to the public. It was during this time that artists such as Kahlo, Abraham Ángel, Ángel Zárraga, and others gained recognition and Jesus Helguera's classical calendar paintings became famous.

For example, Yellowstone is believed to have been the world's first national park when it was established in eighteen seventy-two. Other students will get a chance to see parks in faraway places through Skype and other online programs. The National Park Service also works with partners to provide education. One of its partners is a nonprofit organization called NatureBridge. NatureBridge is celebrating its fortieth anniversary and says one million young people have taken part in its programs. The organization works with students from kindergarten through twelfth grade and uses national parks as its classrooms. It provides field science programs at Yosemite National Park and four other locations in California and the northwestern state of Washington. Now, NatureBridge is launching an East Coast center with a four-million-dollar grant from Google. The program will begin in April at the Prince William Forest Park in Virginia. Students stay for three to five days in NatureBridge programs. The activities are aimed at developing their science skills. For example, they learn about different soils and study water quality under a microscope. Jason Morris is executive vice president of NatureBridge. He says when they are not sleeping, eating or in a laboratory, the students spend their time outdoors. Julia Washburn is associate director of education and interpretation for the National Park Service. She says in a time of budget cuts, the agency has to find ways to still meet its goals. "We are not likely to get a lot of money in this current economy. This is about doing different work with the money that we have and redirecting resources into it." Ms. Washburn says one of the most important services that the Park Service provides every day is nature interpretation. She says, "Interpretation is a form of informal education. So park rangers are interpreters. They orient you to the place you are in and help you make connections, emotional and intellectual connections, with the place." In which John Green teaches you about the American Revolution and the American Revolutionary War, which it turns out were two different things. John goes over the issues and events that precipitated rebellion in Britain's American colonies, and he also explores the ideas that laid the groundwork for the new American democracy. Find out how the tax bill from the Seven Years War fomented an uprising, how the Enlightenment influenced the Founding Fathers, and who were the winners and losers in this conflict.(hint: many of the people living in the Colonies ended up losers) The Revolution purportedly brought freedom and equality to the Thirteen Colonies, but they weren't equally distributed. Also, you'll learn about America's love affair with commemorative ceramics and what happens when rich white guys take the reins from reins white guys, and put together a society of, by, and for rich white guys. Monday 4/14 President Calderón at Inaugural Ceremony of National Week of Evaluation and Application of Enlace Speech: Education is what makes a country great, and the basis of a better life. That is why I am delighted to start this week with the implementation of the 2008 Enlace Test. The test is designed to see how well the Mexican government is working as regards education; it is not intended to pressure children, it does not count towards their final grade or moving up a year, it is simply an examination of the National Education System. This time, as mentioned earlier, the test has several different features from last year. We need, let's see if we can achieve this, a reform that will enable Mexico to educate its students well, preparing them for life and work and for the competitive world of the 21st century. I know that by working together: Federal Government, teachers, the Teachers' Union, parents and state governments will not only be able to achieve quality education at the pre-school, primary and secondary level, but also establish the bases for the new 21st century Mexican school. In order to live better, we need to reform education in Mexico so that everyone does his or her part in enabling Mexican children to receive the best possible education so that soon, in the medium term, Mexican education will be among the best in the world. Let us make this education reform integral; let us do it together and celebrate the 200 years of National Independence with a renewed education system, and may one of the fruits of the Centenary of the Mexican Revolution be the type of education the revolutionaries fought for.

Today we talk about the many revolutions of the 19th century and what they had in common, that is, they led to the emergence of nation states. We start by the revolution in Haiti, then Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, then we mention the revolution in Greece, Italy, and Germany. I mention some famous and colorful figures from the Italian revolutionary tradition, such as Mazzini, and Garibaldi. We finish with the German unification, which represents the compromise between the conservative forces of monarchist and the revolutionaries asking for national unity.

September 25, 2013 - How has Eurocentric anthropology and linguistics affected the way we interpret our elders and ancestors who share their cultural knowledge with foreign researchers? Join us for a presentation with Khelsilem Rivers and April Charlo, indigenous peoples from community-based and cultural revitalization backgrounds, who will be discussing decolonization of language revitalization. Their presentation and open dialogue will address the context of rapid language loss and decline, and how colonization has affected or is embedded in the strategies of revitalization. In an effort to revitalize Indigenous languages, communities may have unknowingly adopted or assimilated colonized ways of thinking as they invest interest and attempt to repair or restore ties to culture and language. Are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha, et all with an English-mind or are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha with a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyaw, Kanien'keháka mind? Indigenous languages represent one of the darkest ways in which ethnocide and cultural genocide have occurred. It is expected in the next twenty-five years over 700 of the worlds Indigenous languages will be forgotten. In the Vancouver area alone, the two Indigenous languages are considered critical endangered; Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) language has five to seven fluent speakers and hən̓q̓əmin̓əm has one fluent speaker left. Decolonizing Language Revitalization aims to put forward perspectives of shifting values, cultural understandings, and impacts on community. It is the stories we tell ourselves (as a people) that impacts who we believe we are, and then who we become. But if the stories -- even including, or especially the Indigenous ones -- are filtered through colonialism, we have become a different people because of it. April Charlo from Bitterroot Salish people and is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Montana. Khelsilem Rivers is a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh-Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw language revitalization activist from Vancouver.
