Genesis 22:1-19 | Abraham & Isaac 1 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 2 Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.” 3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.” 6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” 8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together. 9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” 13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” 15 The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time 16 and said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, 18 and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.” 19 Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba. You'll love teaching these Sunday School stories that promote Christianity. Bringing The Story To Life - Whiteboard Video Part 2 World Outreach Church is reading through the Bible this year, and we’re journeying through the book of Genesis. God has created the world, Adam and Eve, all the animals, and it was good – until the story is darkened by a wicked serpent, disrupting God’s intended peace. Adam and Eve make a history-changing decision that results in their broken relationship with God and each other. It goes from bad to worse until God decides to start over, cleansing man’s mess with a global flood. Even so, God’s plan is still emerging, focusing on His promise to a special group of people that He will use to help bring things back to the way there were intended to be.

International Sunday School Lesson - Sunday School in 7minutes THE CALL OF ABRAM BACKGROUND SCRIPTURE: Genesis 9–12” ISSL: October 14 Methodist Sunday School: October 21 Our lesson accounts for Terah’s family line. From Terah came 3 sons Abram who entered into a covenant with God, Nahor, and Haran, the father of Lot. Lot’s father died before Terah. Terah then took his son Abram and Abram’s wife Sarai, his grandson Lot, leaving Ur for the land of Canaan. But when they got to a Haran, about 1/2 way they settled there. Now the geology gives us the background of Abram who would become the father of many nations. In this part of our lesson technically, there is not yet an expressed covenant with Abram. In fact, Abram’s call in Genesis 12 is not detailed, requiring a walk of faith. An aging Abram was told to leave the place he knew, the place his father had brought them the place were his father had worked to preserve.

In Genesis 15–16, Abram expressed this kind of doubt regarding God’s promise of a son. God’s promise remained unfulfilled, and Abram needed new reassurance from God. But even after God provided this reassurance, Abram and Sarai still hesitated to fully trust that He would keep His word. They came up with a plan to overcome Sarai’s barrenness and provide Abram with the son he longed for. Ultimately, they looked beyond the promise and took matters into their own hands. Genesis 24:1-27 | Issac & Rebekah Abraham was now very old, and the Lord had blessed him in every way. 2 He said to the senior servant in his household, the one in charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh. 3 I want you to swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, 4 but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.” 5 The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?” 6 “Make sure that you do not take my son back there,” Abraham said. 7 “The Lord, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land’—he will send his angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there. 8 If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.” 9 So the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter. 10 Then the servant left, taking with him ten of his master’s camels loaded with all kinds of good things from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim and made his way to the town of Nahor. 11 He had the camels kneel down near the well outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water. 12 Then he prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13 See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. 14 May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.” 15 Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milkah, who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor. 16 The woman was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever slept with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again. 17 The servant hurried to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water from your jar.” 18 “Drink, my lord,” she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink. 19 After she had given him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water for your camels too, until they have had enough to drink.” 20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels. 21 Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the Lord had made his journey successful. 22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring weighing a beka[c] and two gold bracelets weighing ten shekels. 23 Then he asked, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?” 24 She answered him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milkah bore to Nahor.” 25 And she added, “We have plenty of straw and fodder, as well as room for you to spend the night.” 26 Then the man bowed down and worshiped the Lord, 27 saying, “Praise be to the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. As for me, the Lord has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.” You'll love teaching these Sunday School stories that promote Christianity. God's plan for each of us is a plan carried out by faith, in Jesus. This plan empowers us to live in this world of darkness. We are taking a look at faith today. We begin with Abraham, the Father of Faith. The key chapters are Genesis 12, 15, and 22. Notice how God entered Abraham's life - not with condemnation and wrath, but with promises and blessings. This is grace in action. This grace compelled Abraham to respond by faith. God delivered on his promise to Abraham. When Abraham was 100, his wife, Sarah, gave birth to a son and they named him Isaac. "Some time later," as Genesis 22 begins, God tested Abraham. After a three day journey, Abraham and Isaac arrived at Mount Moriah, the place of sacrifice. It was time for Abraham to do what God had ordered - to sacrifice his child of promise, Isaac. When told to take Isaac's life, Abraham reasoned that God had the power to raise him back to life. Abraham was tested, at the critical moment, his faith proved genuine. He truly believed God had power over death. Here is where belief in the resurrection is crucial. If you do not believe God raised Jesus from the dead, you're not going to believe he can give you a new life. Do you believe this to be true? If not, step into the faith of Abraham and experience the reality of the resurrection. We would love to hear your comments and please like and share this video. The blessing Abraham received from God was given to Isaac, whom Sarah bore to him in her old age. But who would be next to receive that blessing? Isaac married Rebekah and eventually she became pregnant with twins. But in the womb they struggled together, and Rebekah inquired of the Lord as to what was happening. “There are two nations within you,” the Lord said, “and the older will serve the younger, and one nation will be stronger than the other.” In other words, the covenant of blessing that God gave to Abraham and then to Isaac would be passed to the younger of the twins. This was not customary in that culture, but this is what God had decided. When Rebekah was giving birth to the twins. The first that arrived was covered with hair, so they call him Harry. Well, actually, they called him Esau, which means hairy. And afterward his brother came forth with his hand holding onto Esau’s heel, so his name was called Jacob, which means heel snatcher, or supplanter, or, in other words, one who catches others by the heel to trip them up. Jacob lived up to his name. One day when Jacob had cooked stew, Esau came in from the field and was famished; and Esau said to Jacob, “Please let me have a swallow of that red stew, for I’m famished.” But Jacob said, “First sell me your birthright.” And Esau responded, “I am so hungry I’m about to die; so what use then is the birthright to me?” And Jacob said, “First swear to me.” So Esau sold his birthright to Jacob. When we come to chapter 27, Isaac is 137 years old, his eyes are dim from age and he doesn’t know how much time he has left to live, so he decided it was time to give the blessing that would normally belong to the eldest son. The problem is that Isaac favored Esau over Jacob. Esau was ruddy and an outdoorsman. He was an archer and a hunter and Isaac had a taste for wild game. Rebekah favored Jacob. Perhaps because she knew that he was to receive the blessing handed down from Abraham or perhaps it was because he was a peaceful man, living in tents. One day Rebekah overheard Isaac telling Esau to hunt some wild game and prepare his favorite stew after which Isaac would give the blessing to Esau. This wasn’t right. She knew this was not God’s plan, but rather than trusting that God would somehow fulfill His promise, she took matters into her own hands and hatched a plan to deceive Isaac into giving the blessing to Jacob. Isaac wasn’t trusting God’s plan either. Notice the secrecy. Notice the conspiracy. Normally the father’s blessing would be given before the entire family because it was like a will distributing the family wealth and headship. Isaac knew that God had determined that the older would serve the younger. He knew that Esau had sold his birthright to Jacob and he also knew that Esau had disqualified himself from spiritual leadership when he took two Canaanite women as wives, yet he resisted God’s plan. There are many lessons from this story, but they’re not lessons we learn from their excellent character; we learn from their poor example. God allows the reality of who they are to be seen because we can learn many lessons about character in our own lives as well lessons about the faithfulness of God in spite of our weakness and failures. I. Don’t Resist God’s Plan Isaac knew what God had said to Rebekah, that the older would serve the younger, but he decided to resist God’s plan. It’s never a good idea to resist God’s plan, it always ends badly. I could give example after biblical example, but I’m sure there are many in this room who have experienced that themselves and know that it is true. A. Without vision; people perish Isaac’s eyes are too dim to see. This is true physically, but I submit it was true spiritually as well. He didn’t see the spiritual consequences of resisting God’s will for the boys.

14 year old Emily opens Turnaround Tuesday with a piano solo. She plans to begin a Bible study for teens at a later date. Together today, we'll look at the life of Abraham's wife, Sarah. Grab your Bible and read the account in Genesis 11:29; 12:1-7. We'll see how Sarah dealt with change. In the beginning of the lesson Sarah was packing in preparation for a move. God told Abraham to leave his father's house, his homeland and his father's gods, and go to the land where God directed him. Sarah would be affected by this move. She too would leave everything familiar. We'll see that God not only changed their location but later changed their names. Her original name was Sarai which meant "dominative." The verb dominate means -"To command; be the most influential; behave overbearingly. I believe she like to be in charge, but when she submitted to God's command to Abraham and willingly went with him, God changed her nature and her name. Her new name, Sarah, meant "queen or princess." She took her position as queen and allowed her husband to be the leader as king. After her nature was changed to a queen, Sarah respected Abraham, calling him "lord" (I Peter 3:6). Like Sarah, Emily is about to make a move. We'll discuss what it's like to leave friends and family. In my life, I have moved over 40 times, We've lived in houses, an apartment, a trailer, a duplex, Sunday school rooms in the back of a church. That happened three times. One was for four years. We even lived in a house where the owners had raised chickens and another one had been a tobacco pack house. Sarah was not only a person who adjusted to change, but she was a late bloomer. She was 90 years old before she had a baby. Sometimes we are older before God uses us in ministry. Lessons learned from Sarah 1. God sometimes calls us away from family so that we may complete His work. 2. If my husband is called, then I am called along with him. 3.Change is not always bad. 4.God can change my inward nature and my name. 5. God can birth something new in me even in old age. Spiritual Gems Just as Sarah had to leave all to follow her husband, Abraham, we must leave all to follow Christ. We must leave the gods of this world and commit to the one true God. He has called us out of the world of darkness into his marvelous light. As Sarah gave birth to a son late in life, remember that it is not too late to give birth to a ministry even in old age.

This video was sent to me by one of my very best friends growing up. You see, Steve and Debbie had been praying for a child. Steve, who is now in ministry, explained, "Singing to our child was one thing that I have always dreamed about. I was beginning to think it wasn't going to happen. Then, that dream came true on 11/12/16. I'm now singing to her all the time! The whole reason I wanted to do this video was for it to be a testimony of God's grace." Well Steve, it absolutely is. Steve and Debbie's story remind me of the biblical story of Abraham & Sarah. Abraham followed God's direction even though It was not clear what his final destination would look like. Steve left Tennessee to move to Indiana because he too felt God's calling. In the midst of following God's will, Abraham faced many trials and tribulations. Steve would be the first to tell you that he has faced his share of tribulation. Sarah followed Abraham to the ends of the earth and supported him no matter what. Yes, Debbie has done the same. God had a plan for Abraham and Sarah that was bigger than anyone could ever have imagined. Steve and Debbie's story is still being written, but there is plenty of evidence of God's hand all throughout their lives. Certainly, their story doesn't have the incredible drama that our biblical comparison has, but there are many similarities. Ultimately, God blessed Abraham and Sarah with Isaac and now Steve and Debbie have been blessed with Sophie. Following God doesn't always mean guaranteed blessings. I love how Steve and Debbie have continued to be faithful throughout their journey. Sometimes God's plan isn't clear, but just know that His plan is holy and pure. I pray for God's will in my life and the lives of my wife and children! God's grace is sufficient! Their testimony is powerful and rich and I hope it blessed you this day. God bless. Kevin Rhea

His strength, wrapped up in long, flowing hair, was given to him by God to save the Israelites. But Samson was no faultless hero — rather, he was prone to chasing women (oh Delilah?!) and taking advantage of his legendary strength to win bets and slay armies.
