It is supposed to reduce the immune system if there is any deficiency. During a pregnancy a womans blood levels are usually checked at the beginning and then again at the end when you come to the hospital to have your baby. And if the doctor sees that your iron levels or your blood levels are low at the beginning then they will recommend an iron supplement. This is usually recommended if your hematocrit is 33 or if your hemoglobin is 11 or below. So those are kind of the thresholds and you would only know if you have low iron or low blood levels if your doctor checks your blood. Naturally a womans hematocrit or hemoglobin levels will drop during pregnancy because your blood levels rise, especially at the end of the second trimester/beginning of the third, so the increased blood volume actually dilutes the hemoglobin that you have in your blood, making your levels a little bit lower. So it is normal for women to have lower levels, but again, there is a threshold where your doctor will want to treat you if they know about it. Of course if you have symptoms of anemia you will want to talk to your doctor and these include: excessive fatigue; you get really tired easily; you just do not feel like you have a lot of energy; or you get dizzy. Dizziness can be a normal part of pregnancy, and so can fatigue, so talk with doctor and they can ask you more specific questions about how you feel and decide if it warrants further investigation, like a blood test to see if you are anemic. In addition to taking a supplement, there are different ways you can get iron in your diet. Eat lean red meats and spinach. Those are both high in iron. And of course if you are taking a pre-natal vitamin each day you are already getting an iron supplement in that form, but some women do need an additional iron supplement on top of it.
