Now, new research examining nine previous studies of more than 500 patients suggests eating probiotics may lower blood pressure. Researchers in Australia found eating probiotics lowered patients' blood pressure three points on the top number, and two points on the bottom. Researchers say probiotics with multiple bacteria are better than those with single bacteria. Patients had to consume probiotics regularly, for at least eight weeks to see a modest drop in blood pressure. But NYU cardiologist Harmony Reynolds says it's not clear that a supplement is as beneficial as getting probiotics from your food. "Sometimes if people change their diet, exercise more and probiotic is part of that healthy eating plan, they can avoid medicine, and I love to see that," says Reynolds. "Instead of going and having ice cream, I will have nice cold yogurt and it's very satisfying," says Mihailovich. It's an enjoyable step toward keeping her heart healthy. Researchers say more studies are needed before doctors can recommend probiotics for high blood pressure and prevention.

Yogurt Yogurt is one of the best sources of probiotics, which are friendly bacteria that can improve your health. It is made from milk that has been fermented by friendly bacteria, mainly lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria (6). Eating yogurt is associated with many health benefits, including improved bone health. It is also beneficial for people with high blood pressure (7, 8). In children, yogurt may help reduce the diarrhea caused by antibiotics. It can even help relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) (9, 10, 11). It is one of the oldest traditional foods and is popular in many countries, especially in Europe. Sauerkraut is often used on top of sausages or as a side dish. It has a sour, salty taste and can be stored for months in an airtight container. In addition to its probiotic qualities, sauerkraut is rich in fiber as well as vitamins C, B and K. It is also high in sodium and contains iron and manganese (17). Sauerkraut also contains the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, which are important for eye health (18). Make sure to choose unpasteurized sauerkraut, as pasteurization kills the live and active bacteria. 4. Tempeh Tempeh is a fermented soybean product. It forms a firm patty whose flavor is described as nutty, earthy or similar to a mushroom. Tempeh is originally from Indonesia but has become popular worldwide as a high-protein meat substitute. The fermentation process actually has some surprising effects on its nutritional profile. Soybeans are typically high in phytic acid, a plant compound that impairs the absorption of minerals like iron and zinc. However, fermentation lowers the amount of phytic acid, which may increase the amount of minerals your body is able to absorb from tempeh (19, 20). Fermentation also produces some vitamin B12, a nutrient that soybeans do not contain (21, 22, 23). Vitamin B12 is mainly found in animal foods, such as meat, fish, dairy and eggs (24). This makes tempeh a great choice for vegetarians as well as anyone looking to add a nutritious probiotic to their diet. 5. Kimchi Kimchi is a fermented, spicy Korean side dish. Cabbage is usually the main ingredient, but it can also be made from other vegetables. Kimchi is flavored with a mix of seasonings, such as red chili pepper flakes, garlic, ginger, scallion and salt. Kimchi contains the lactic acid bacteria Lactobacillus kimchii, as well as other lactic acid bacteria that may benefit digestive health (25, 26). Then, with a surprised and confused look on her face asked, “what the heck are those?.... I’ve never even heard of them?... What’s the difference between the pro and prebiotics?” And this is the typical response I get when I tell someone about prebiotics - most people have never heard of them. And this is a really important topic for you because healthy “gut bacteria” is vital for BOTH your physical and mental/emotional health. Also, if you’ve ever taken antibiotics, then you should for sure watch today’s video because antibiotics kill off these important bacteria and it can take months before your gut bacteria is back to healthy levels. Many people have heard of probiotics, but not too many have heard of prebiotics and that’s what I’m going to quickly discuss today - The differences in the two and why you should take both. Plus, the best foods and supplements to get both from. Difference Between Probiotics and Prebiotics Even though they sound similar, the two play different roles for your health. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria, while prebiotics are food for these bacteria. Even though they play different roles in your body, both are extremely important and work best when taken together. In a short summary: Probiotics: These are live bacteria found in certain foods or supplements. They can provide numerous health benefits, such as: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/8-health-benefits-of-probiotics Help prevent and treat diarrhea Keep your regular and your colon healthy Improve mental and emotional health Keep your heart healthy Boost your immune system Even help lose weight and belly fat Prebiotics: These substances come from types of carbs (mostly fiber) that humans can't digest. The beneficial bacteria in your gut eat this fiber. Basically, PREbiotics are fuel for the PRObiotics. PREbiotics help feed the PRObiotics and healthy bacteria in your gut. Thus, with the addition of prebiotics, the probiotics you take will do more and continue to grow and get stronger. Where To Get Your Probiotics You can get these from food and supplements. Food As far as food sources, yogurt is one that most people have heard of. If you make home-made yogurt, it’s much healthier and has higher prebiotics than the store bought ones. However, I prefer fermented foods such as Sauerkraut - which has REALLY high amounts Kimchi Kefir (dairy and non-dairy, I suggest NON) Supplements Your other option is in supplement form, which is what I personally do. Now, this can get really complicated because there are so many strains and quantity Some are just 2 strains and have a few million “microorganisms” and “cultures”. Then we have those that might have as many as over 12 strains and 90+ BILLION “microorganisms/cultures” The higher the amounts, the more effective. Where To Get Your Prebiotics Similar to probiotics, you can get these from food and supplements. Food Prebiotics are types of fiber found in carbohydrate sources. Foods that are high in prebiotic fiber include: Legumes, beans and peas. Oats. Bananas. Berries. Asparagus. Garlic. Leeks. Onions. However, keep in mind that you do need to eat a lot of these foods to get a good amount of prebiotics. Supplements This is why I just take a supplement for it, to guarantee I get a good amount of prebiotics. There are many brands that sell prebiotics. While it has been suspected that the GI microflora have a profound effect on human physiology, there has not been a lot of data supporting that the changes in physiology determine the resulting composition of the microflora. Now there is a study supporting that the microflora can be altered and this can change insulin sensitivity and decrease the risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Scientists made up a combination of inulin (fiber), beta glucan (an immune stimulant and also a fiber), and antioxidants and tested to see if it changed insulin sensitivity in 28 adults with pre-diabetes. It did! It also decreased appetite. While this is a small study, it adds to the growing body of literature supporting that by changing the microflora we can alter human biochemistry and physiology. This information came from a scientific paper that was conducted by a company called Microbiome Therapeutics, a Colorado based biotechnology company and was presented at the joint meeting of the International Society of Endocrinology and the Endocrine Society at their June 2014 meeting.

Magnesium plays a critical role in brain function and mood, and low levels are linked to an increased risk of depression.8 One analysis of over 8,800 people found that those under the age of 65 years, with the lowest intake of magnesium had a 32% greater risk of depression.9 I personally add in an extra 800 mgs daily of Magnesium, right before bed because it also helps with relaxation and sleep. 4 - Whole eggs are very important for overall health, and especially brain and mood health. This is because egg yolks contain cholesterol, which is needed to create many of your sex hormones (testosterone, estrogen, etc.), which all affect your mood. Don’t worry, cholesterol from eggs won’t raise your cholesterol levels. However, having low cholesterol is linked to depression.10 Eggs also contain zinc, B12 and fat soluble vitamins such as D and K. Being deficient in any of these is linked to higher levels of depression.11,12 5 -- Foods high in probiotics is very important for your mood. Your gut bacteria is linked to many health ailments -- heart disease, diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer's and even more so -- depression and anxiety.13,14,15 Yogurt, Kefir, Sauerkraut, Tempeh, Kimchi and similar foods are very high in healthy bacteria and pro and pre-biotics. Fermentation is a process that involves the breakdown of sugars by bacteria and yeast. 1. Kefir. Studies have shown that kefir may come with many benefits, affecting everything from digestion to inflammation to bone health. In one small study, kefir was shown to improve the digestion of lactose in 15 people with lactose intolerance. Enjoy kefir on its own or use it to give your smoothies and blended drinks a boost. 2. Tempeh. This high-protein meat substitute is firm but chewy and can be baked, steamed or sautéed before being added to dishes. In addition to its impressive probiotic content, tempeh is rich in many nutrients that may better your health. For example, soy protein has been shown to reduce certain risk factors for heart disease. 3. Natto. It contains a good amount of fiber, providing 5 grams per 100 gram serving. Fiber may help support digestive health. It moves through the body undigested, adding bulk to stool to help promote regularity and alleviate constipation. Yogurt is high in many important nutrients, including calcium, potassium, phosphorus, riboflavin and vitamin B12.
