Which of the following is the blood pressure goal for clients that are 60 years old or above without diabetes or chronic kidney disease? A. less than 130/80 mmHg B. less than 140/90 mmgHg C. less than 150/90 mmHg D. less than 150/80 mmHg Answer: C. Rationale: According to the Joint National Committee (JNC 8) February, 2014, Hypertension Guideline, the blood pressure for clients age 60 or older without diabetes or chronic kidney disease should be maintained at a level below the 150/90 mmHg threshold. This value is different from the JNC 7, published in 2004. This proves how important it is for nurses to stay current with the most recent research. Guidelines can, and often do, change!

What's New in Adult Hypertension: JNC 8
It has been over 8 years since the last and 7th Joint National Committee (JNC) report on Hypertension was published. Many issues on the Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of Hypertension have since occurred challenging the way clinicians should be treating patients with hypertension. The purpose of this lecture is to anticipate/predict how JNC8 should address these issues using an evidence-based review of the literature to support its recommendations. The content will include the importance of effective BP reduction, and the evidence for current and what future goals for BP reduction should be; the challenges of in-office BP detection and new information on the importance of out-of-office BP measurement; the controversies on the initial BP agent chosen for therapy and the differences within the thiazide-diuretic class; and the importance of dual-agent therapy and which combination agents are ideal for BP reduction. " Understanding the new hypertension guidelines from NICE "
http://www.theheart.org/editorial-program/1286405.do The first NICE hypertension guidelines were issued in 2004 and updated in June 2006. The new, simple, 16-page document lists "key priorities," provides a care "pathway," and encompasses different ways to measure and diagnose hypertension, assess risk and target-organ damage, use lifestyle and drug interventions, and educate patients. The 2011 guidelines are the first in the world to formally recommend ambulatory blood-pressure monitoring (ABPM) as a "key priority" in diagnosis of hypertension. heartwire's Lisa Nainggolan sits down with Dr Bryan Williams to talk about the changes to the guidelines and how they will affect care and costs.

Hypertension: Detect, Connect, Control
This session of CDC Public Health Grand Rounds explored hypertension, or high blood pressure. Having high blood pressure increases the risk for cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. Nearly 800,000 people die in the United States each year from cardiovascular disease, which is 1 out of every 3 deaths. An estimated 67 million United States adults have hypertension; almost 36 million of them have uncontrolled hypertension. High blood pressure is called the "silent killer" because it often has no warning signs or symptoms, and many people don't realize they have it. Primary and secondary Hypertension Usmle Pathology - Case Based discussion and Detailed explanation
An important part of any high blood pressure diagnosis includes determining whether the disorder is “primary” or “secondary.” These two classifications refer to the underlying cause of the high blood pressure and do not have anything to do with how serious the actual high blood pressure is. Primary Hypertension The vast majority of high blood pressure diagnoses fall into the category of “primary hypertension” also called “essential hypertension.” This classification means that your doctor or health care team is not able to locate a single cause which explains the elevated blood pressure. Another medical term used to describe illness without obvious underlying cause is “idiopathic,” and you may hear your doctor use this term. High blood pressure is a complicated disease, with complex and often interrelated genetic and environmental factors, it is usually not possible to say for sure which elements combined to produce it. Secondary Hypertension A modest number of high blood pressure diagnoses are classified as “secondary hypertension.” The classification differs from a diagnosis of primary hypertension because, in this case, a clearly identifiable cause of the high blood pressure is determined. A wide variety of underlying problems can cause high blood pressure. Some important conditions include: Obstructive sleep apnea Kidney problems Adrenal gland tumors Thyroid problems Certain defects in blood vessels you're born with (congenital) Certain medications, such as birth control pills, cold remedies, decongestants, over-the-counter pain relievers and some prescription drugs Illegal drugs, such as cocaine and amphetamines Alcohol abuse or chronic alcohol use Risk Factors for Hypertension High blood pressure, whether primary or secondary, has many risk factors, including: Age. The risk of high blood pressure increases as you age. Race. High blood pressure is particularly common among blacks, often developing at an earlier age than it does in whites. Family history. High blood pressure tends to run in families. Being overweight or obese. The more you weigh the more blood you need to supply oxygen and nutrients to your tissues. As the volume of blood circulated through your blood vessels increases, so does the pressure on your artery walls. Not being physically active. People who are inactive tend to have higher heart rates. Using tobacco. Not only does smoking or chewing tobacco immediately raise your blood pressure temporarily, but the chemicals in tobacco can damage the lining of your artery walls. Too much salt (sodium) in your diet. Too much sodium in your diet can cause your body to retain fluid, which increases blood pressure. Drinking too much alcohol. Over time, heavy drinking can damage your heart. Having more than two drinks a day for men and more than one drink a day for women may affect your blood pressure. Stress. High levels of stress can lead to a temporary increase in blood pressure. Certain chronic conditions. Certain chronic conditions also may increase your risk of high blood pressure, such as kidney disease, diabetes and sleep apnea.

Hypertension Treatment - Best Hypertension Treatment
Hypertension Treatment - Best Hypertension Treatment http://www.HeartDiseaseReversed.com High blood pressure is a common condition in which the force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease. Blood pressure is determined by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries, the higher your blood pressure. You can have high blood pressure (hypertension) for years without any symptoms. Even without symptoms, damage to blood vessels and your heart continues and can be detected. Uncontrolled high blood pressure increases your risk of serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke. http://www.HeartDiseaseReversed.com http://youtu.be/U-c3NnumDKY Hypertension Hypertension Treatment Hypertension-Treatment

Well, high blood pressure or hypertension is a condition in the body where the pressure inside the arteries is high. The link between hypertension and heart disease is one of the most well established links in the medical literature. Finding out if you have high blood pressure or hypertension is easy. Your doctor takes a simple measurement, usually at the upper arm with a blood pressure cuff and is able to tell you exactly what your blood pressure is. Now, blood pressure varies throughout the day, but in general, if you're resting at the doctor's office, and they take a blood pressure measurement and it's above 140 for the top number and 90 for the bottom number, most doctors would consider that having hypertension. The higher it goes, the worse your risk may be. Having hypertension or high blood pressure leads to various changes within the body that helps promote the development of blocked arteries or atherosclerosis. It also promotes the hardening or stiffening of those arteries. Both of those conditions can lead to things like stroke or heart attack, or a weakening of the heart muscle called heart failure. The good news is that treating hypertension or high blood pressure is relatively easy. Doctors have many choices of medications they can give and lifestyle modifications such as increased exercise and certain dietary choices may help as well. So, having hypertension or high blood pressure leads to a lot of changes in the body which can cause heart disease.
