I vlog on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on vegan health and nutrition. I am currently just finishing a masters in nutrition and qualifying as a nutritionist and next year I will be doing a Phd in nutritional science. So hit that subscribe button, hit that bell notification and make me a happy smiling vegan! So lets get to the video. Vitamin B12 (also known as cobalamin) is critical in the body. It plays a pivotal role in DNA synthesis, blood and bone health, heart health, detoxification as well as being critical in the maintenance of your nervous system and brain health. Although rare, long term severe b12 deficiency can lead to anemia, paralysis and even death, so you want to ensure that you get enough B12 to ensure optimal health. A common B12 myth is that since b12 is found in meat, dairy and egg products, you have to eat these products or you will run into deficiency.It is also suggested that b12 proves that we were born to eat meat. It is really important for your health though to understand that animals do not make B12. It is made by microorganisms living in the soil and water. So simply put, B12 is made by bacteria. B12 is found in animal products because they eat grass, plants and small amounts of soil that contain B12. This B12 is then swallowed by the animal and then deposited in their muscles. In years gone by, humans got their sources of vitamin B12 in the same way. Our ancestors would spend hours every day foraging for fruits and vegetables that were pulled from the ground and contained sufficient levels of B12. If they were thirsty then they would drink well water that contained B12. Fast forward to today and these same fruits and vegetable are sprayed with every type of pesticide/herbicide possible and washed within an inch of their lives. Tap water is also heavily chlorinated. So the traditional and optimal sources of B12 have been obliterated. Vegans therefore need to find alternative sources. Before supplementing, everyone should look at getting tested for B12 levels. But it doesn’t just stop there. You need to test for B12 in conjunction with homocysteine and serum folate. And let me explain why. Firstly you need to ensure you have B12 levels are in the range of 600ng/l or above. The reason for this is there is not enough circulating B12 in your tissues, or enough serum folate, then a troublesome molecule called homocysteine is able to build up. And this is something you really want to avoid at all costs. Homocysteine damages artery walls and allows plaque formation. The net result of this is heart attacks and strokes. So please please please never listen to anyone who says that heart attacks are simply cause by eating meat, dairy and eggs. This is why I always recommend that people test for b12, homocysteine and serum folate at the same time because it gives you a true picture of what’s actually happening in your body. Your homocysteine score will tell you if your B12 and folate levels are adequate and vice versa. Testing for just B12 will not give you a true picture. Ideally homocysteine should be below 12 micromols/L. If it is above this coupled with low b12 levels then you know your body is not getting adequate sources of b12. You will therefore need to increase b12 supplentation intake. If your folate levels are also low then consume dark leafy greens on a daily basis and then retest all levels after three months. I would suggest that you retest after 3 months after starting to optimise your b12, homocysteine and folate levels to ensure your body is absorbing ok. If not then you could have an absorption problem…… but that is a topic for another video. Once you have everything optimised then I would advise testing b12, homocysteine and folate levels on a yearly basis. The best source will be dependent on your needs and your genetics. There is no one size that fits all. I personally take a supplement every day. Before I tell you which one and why let me break down your options. There are 4 types of b12: cyanocobalamin, hydroxycabalamin, methylcobalamin adenosylcobalamin Cyanocobalamin is least expensive and most stable (so doesn’t degrade as quick on the shelf), but there are concerns around that fact that it releases a small amount of cyanide as it is metabolised in the body. Cyanocobalamin and hydroxycobalamin are forms of b12 that can also be difficult for people to convert into the active forms of B12 if they have the homozygous MTHFR mutation. You need MTHFR enzymes to produce the active form.

Vitamin C is a must have for a guinea pigs diet! They require it daily or will up with Scurvy, which is very debilitating, painful and life threatening. The important thing is, Scurvy is SO preventable. Make sure to feed HIGH quality pellets with stabilized Vitamin C that you are not keeping for more than 6 months. Feed fresh veggies like bell pepper, cilantro, tomato (small amount), red or green leaf lettuce and so on, these are high in Vitamin C but average in Calcium. High Vitamin C veggies can also be HIGH in Calcium so please be aware that too much Calcium can be trouble. If you are supplementing Vitamin C daily, make sure to speak with you vet for the safe amount. You can use Vitamin C hay tabs from Oxbow, Liquid Vitamin C or chewable Vitamin C. Ensure that it is not a multivitamin but is just Absorbic Acid (Vitamin C). Again, speak with your vet for the safe portion/amount to feed. NEVER add stuff to their water, it degrades quickly and changes the flavour. If the guinea pigs don't want to drink as much, this can cause other illnesses and complications, so isn't worth the risk. This video takes a quick look at what it is, and how it can affect you. Firstly, MTHFR really looks like an abbreviation of a bad swear word. But it's actually an important enzyme in the body and it stands for Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase. MTHFR is necessary for Methylation to occur, which is a metabolic process that switches genes on and off, repairs DNA and many other important things. Methylation is also essential to convert both folate and folic acid – each a form of Vitamin B9 – into its active form that the body can use. Without the enzyme activity of MTHFR, conversion of folate and folic acid into a form that the body can use will not occur. Okay so the production of that MTHFR enzyme is triggered by the MTHFR gene. A variation or "defect" in that gene is known as an MTHFR mutation, and its thought that 30-50% of us carry this genetic defect. Now this part is important: Most people with a mutation remain unaffected and do not experience any noticeable effects. It is not inherently dangerous… Genetic variations are actually very common and are what makes us all look and behave differently. However, for those who are sensitive to this defect, enzyme efficiency can drop down to between 30-70% depending on the type of mutation. This means they do not convert folate and folic acid into their active form very well. The consequence of this is increased levels of homocysteine, which is a strong independent risk factor for heart disease. Those who are sensitive to their MTHFR mutation are also more likely to develop a folate deficiency and are therefore at increased risk for health problems if their diet is not folate-rich. Now what about its influence on cancer, autoimmune diseases, Alzheimer's disease and other disease states? Considering our genes are influenced somewhat by our diet and environment, many studies are able to find a weak link between MTHFR mutations and a particular disease process or disability. But a link does not prove cause and effect. An MTHFR mutation could very well contribute to heart disease and folate deficiency, but that's due to the direct impact it has on homocysteine. Researchers understand that mechanism. But with the current evidence available, it's a big stretch to claim the mutation itself directly causes these other disease states or disabilities. Innocent until PROVEN guilty. There is one other area of health where an MTHFR mutation can be influential, and that's pregnancy. This is because active folic acid is highly protective against Neural Tube Defects of newborns, like spina bifida. That's why all pregnant women are encouraged to take folic acid supplements during the first trimester. Problem is that a folic acid supplement is less likely to be protective if it does not get converted into its active form. So in that sense testing for and flagging an MTHFR mutation could be especially useful for women of childbearing age, and also something to consider if you've had one or more miscarriages. Remember that genetic testing is only a tool to support you in better health. Having a genetic mutation does not necessarily mean it will affect you. You may have heard of MTHFR, but have you heard about MTRR? If you care about your vitamin B12 status, watch this video to learn about it. MTRR is an enzyme that helps you repair your vitamin B12 once it’s been damaged. You don’t need to use it a lot most of the time, so some of us, including me, have genetic variations that make it not work very well, yet we’re fine most of the time. But when you are exposed to new health challenges that increase the damage done to your B12, suddenly you may need to use the enzyme more than usual, and if you have genetic impairments in the enzyme you may suddenly become vulnerable to vitamin B12 deficiency. I don’t recommend making a specific nutritional strategy around MTRR, but I do recommend you monitor your B12 status more proactively if you have genes that lower your MTRR activity.
