We live in a world where toxins and chemicals are all around us. They’re in the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the environment we live in, we’re not even safe at our very own homes. We know that there are certain safety measures and guidelines in the workplaces and restaurants which need to be followed so that the employees and customers are guaranteed their safety, but what about the home? I know we all try to maintain a safe and toxin-free environment for us and our family but unwillingly and unknowingly we’re exposed to dangerous influences. Non-Stick Cookware We all use non-stick cookware because it’s the easiest to use and clean afterwards so why shouldn’t we use it? It’s been discovered that once the non-stick pan or pot gets heated up the coating begins to decompose at a molecular level, releasing numerous toxic particles and gasses based on fluoride, most of which are carcinogenic. Instead of using these toxic pans and pots use the ceramic version, they’re much safer. Artificial Sweeteners Contrary to popular belief, the “safer” versions of sugar, the artificial sweeteners are actually worse than sugar itself, or at least most of them are. The majority of these sweeteners contain: Sorbitol – the intestines can’t digest it all the way, which creates a feeling of bloating, gasses and even diarrhea Acesulfame K – might affect pregnancy, lead to tumors, and may be carcinogenic Aspartame – has become infamous due to the link to skin cancers and can be deadly in the case of phenylketonuria Saccharin – indigestible, it is excreted unchanged by the liver, and leads to bladder cancer. Instead of using the abovementioned sweeteners try the following natural ones, cultivated without refining: Erythritol – doesn’t affect the levels of insulin, blood sugar, cholesterol Xylitol – improves bone density and reduces the risk of tooth decay Stevia – can significantly reduce high blood pressure and blood sugar Yacon syrup – beneficial against constipation because it feeds the good intestine bacteria Plastic Bottles and Food Containers We all use plastic food containers but we don’t realize how harmful they are. These containers are full of toxic chemicals which leach into the food that’s stored into it and get in our system. One of those harmful chemicals that’s commonly used in plastic products is Bisphenol A. When it comes to Bisphenol A, scientific research has shown that it has a negative effect on our overall health. After numerous studies have surfaced revealed the dangers from this chemical, the FDA has changed their stance on Bisphenol A in 2010, claiming that there is “some concern” over its influence on the brain, behavior, and prostate glands in young children, babies, and fetuses. Instead of using plastic bottles and containers, opt for metal or glass ones, choose to protect your health and your environment in the process. Air Fresheners Even though they fill out your house with nice scent and pleasant aroma, eliminating bad odor, latest studies have shown that air fresheners are hazardous for your health. They are known to release fumes which can have worse effects on your overall health than cigarette smoke and can even cause respiratory issues and hormonal imbalance. According to a study conducted by the Public Health England’s Center for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards, there’s a “considerable” amount of formaldehyde in the content of common air fresheners, which enters the group of “known human carcinogen” by the United States’ National Toxicology Program. Consequently, excessive exposure to these fresheners has been linked to nose and throat cancer, which I believe is enough to convince you to stop using them. If you like to freshen up your house without exposing yourself to toxic fumes add 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil to a cup of distilled water pour the solution to a spray bottle and spray it all over the house. Commercial Cleaning Products It’s no surprise that the common cleaning products we use are filled with chemicals and toxic ingredients, we all know that and it’s even written to many of these product’s labels. However, we are unaware of the threat they actually pose to our health, the dangers we expose ourselves whenever we use them. They can cause numerus health issues, respiratory infections, allergies and so on. All of this is due to the fact that they contain ingredients like BPA, triclosan, parabens and the likes, all of which are linked to hormonal imbalances and similar health issues. Instead of using these chemical-laden cleaners you can prepare your own natural cleaners at home and protect yourself from the toxic exposure. Try mixing some baking soda and vinegar. This combination effectively eliminates bacteria, including salmonella, staph, and E.coli and does an even better job in that than the commercially available cleaners. Try it out and see for yourself.

10 Harmful Food Additives You Must Avoid Here are 10 food additives you must avoid at all costs. 1. High Fructose Corn Syrup High fructose corn syrup is a cheap sweetener added to sodas and fruit drinks, store-bought salad dressings, some cereals and other processed snacks. Excessive consumption of calorie-rich soda containing high fructose corn syrup is a major contributor to the obesity epidemic in the U.S., as reported by a 2004 study published in the American Journal of Nutrition that studied Americans’ food consumption patterns from 1967 to 2000. 2. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) Monosodium glutamate, also known as MSG, is a taste-enhancing additive widely used in Asian cuisine. It is also found in canned and frozen foods, store-bought salad dressings, soups and children’s snacks. MSG is the manufactured version of the naturally occurring protein glutamic acid. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration labeled MSG safe for use, a polarizing debate still rages on its harmful effects. 3. Artificial Coloring (Dyes) Artificial coloring is commonly found in candies, desserts, ice cream, sports drinks, spreads, condiments, processed snacks (cereals, pastas, noodles) and other foods. Tartrazine is a yellow dye found in soft drinks, gummy bears and several other products. Prolonged consumption of tartrazine could cause cancer, according to a 2015 study published in Anticancer Research. It also exacerbates asthma symptoms. 4. Potassium Bromate Potassium bromate is the food additive that makes your bread rise. It is still widely used in the U.S., although animal studies that showed potassium bromate’s carcinogenic effects led to bans in a number of countries including those in the European Union, Argentina, Nigeria, Brazil, Canada, South Korea and Peru. 5. Aspartame Aspartame is an artificial sweetener found in carbonated sodas, diet sodas, powdered sodas, tabletop sweeteners, yogurt, chewing gum and even some pharmaceuticals. Aspartame accounts for 75 percent of the reactions caused by food additives reported to the FDA in the U.S. While some are comparatively mild reactions like headaches, others are more serious, such as seizures. 6. Trans Fats Trans fats are produced when vegetable oil-based products are solidified through hydrogenation. Foods highest in trans fats include margarine, deep-fried foods and baked goods, especially those containing shortening. Trans fats clog your arteries, which can lead to coronary heart disease that comprises the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart. People with this disease are at greater risk of heart attacks. 7. Olestra Olestra is a fat-substitute found in snack foods, such as potato chips. Olestra consumption decreases the absorption of carotenoids in the body, according to a 2006 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. 8. Nitrites & Nitrates While vegetables contain low levels of nitrites, some may contain nitrates in considerable quantities depending on the method of cultivation, soil features and light intensity. 9. Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO) Brominated vegetable oil (BVO) is a food additive widely used by the soda industry to emulsify sodas. It is especially used in citrus-based sodas, as well as in a variety of sports drinks and baked goods. 10. Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) & Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) Widely found in boxed cereals, vegetable oils and potato chips, BHA and BHT are preservatives that prevent oil in foods from oxidizing and becoming rancid. A constant debate surrounds the issue of the carcinogenic properties of BHA and BHT. Let’s face it! Everyone ages as time passes. Nothing can really turn back the clock- neither denial nor plastic surgery. Just like your choices of clothing, hair styling, entertainment, or even people change as you mature, so should your dietary preferences. No matter how passionately you love certain foods, your body might feel otherwise once you cross a certain age barrier. Here are 9 foods that you should probably stay away from once you turn 30! Caffeinated Drinks: There is a significant association between drinking caffeinated coffee and the decrease of bone mineral density, which leads to osteoporosis. The daily consumption of caffeinated drinks can increase blood sugar levels and cause problems for people with diabetes. Caffeine is a diuretic and can cause dehydration. Caffeine can prevent some from falling asleep and interferes with deep sleep, which can lead to fatigue during the day. Processed Meats: Processed meat has consistently been linked with harmful effects on health. Eating processed meat is associated with increased risk of many chronic diseases like high blood pressure,heart diseases,bowel and stomach cancer. There is no doubt that processed meat contains many harmful chemicals that are not naturally present in fresh meat. Energy Foods: Protein bars contain excess sugar, preservatives, artificial flavors and hydrogenated vegetable oils, which compromises their nutritional quality. Some protein bars lack vitamins and minerals and may not be an adequate meal replacement. Excess consumption of protein may lead to diarrhea, dehydration and nausea. Packaged Foods: Packaged food contains preservatives like aspartame, sulfates, benzoate and yellow dye No. 5 may cause breathing problems like asthma. Saturated fats raise cholesterol levels. Some Preservatives may lead to hyperactive behavior, especially in case of growing kids. They might increase the risk of infertility. Preservatives like sodium and nitrates increase your blood pressure thus damaging the blood vessels and weakening heart tissues. Preservatives like nitrites and nitrates may react with stomach and gastric juices to form carcinogens( cancer-causing agents), which may have adverse effects on your health. Fried Desserts: People who eat a lot of fried foods may have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease, according to a large, long-term study. Eating fried foods away from home where frying oil may not be fresh—posed the greatest risk. With each reuse, oil becomes more degraded, and more gets absorbed into food, which can contribute to weight gain, higher cholesterol, and higher blood pressure—all risk factors for type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Fatty Foods: Fatty foods can cause immediate side effects such as gas, bloating, acid reflux and heartburn, and long-term effects such as increased risk for heart disease. Unhealthy Carbs: Unhealthy carbohydrates causes the risk of chronic diseases and weight gain. Dr. Justin Sonnenburg is an associate professor of microbiology and immunology at Stanford and Dr. Erica Sonnenburg is a senior research scientist in the Sonnenburg lab where they the research many aspects the interaction between diet with the 100 trillion or so bacteria in the gut (specifically the colon) and how this impacts the health of the host (which in this case is a laboratory research mouse). In this episode we discuss the pivotal role fiber plays in fueling good bacteria in the gut to produce compounds that regulate the immune system including increasing the number of T regulatory cells, which are specialized types of immune cells that keep the immune system in check and prevent autoimmune responses, and how these compounds also increase other types of blood cells in the body in a process known as hematopoiesis. We also talk about how the lack of fiber in the typical American diet actually starves these good bacteria of their food. This has an effect not only on the immune system and autoimmune diseases but also results in the breakdown of the gut barrier, which leads to widespread inflammation and inflammatory diseases. What is MSG? (What is Monosodium Glutamate?) MSG / Monosodium Glutamate Imagine sitting at a beautiful table in a dimly lit restaurant on a date with your loved one. You discuss where you want to take your children on vacation this coming summer. Your date ordered spicy barbeque spareribs and a diet coke. When the anticipated meal arrives you notice a piece of sharp glass in the sauce of the ribs and a leaking 9 volt battery in the diet coke. Would you say something to your loved one? If you know that your loved one was about to consume something that could poison them you would jump across the table to intercept that fork from hitting their unknowing mouth. Foods today are laced with toxins that can affect our short and long term health. Research is mounting and conclusive on the effects these chemicals have on us. Maybe it's not so sweet now... If you've thought stevia, the natural alternative to sugar and artificial sweetners with aspartame, et al., is too good to be true, there may be a catch. Check out this textbook written in 1970 by Paul and Anne Ehrlich, the precursor to the textbook Ecoscience they wrote with Obama Science Czar John P. Holdren seven years later. The book advocates all manner of horrors to depopulate what they consider an overpopulated world, including everything from adding sterilants to the water and food to producing a sterilizing virus that requires a vaccine antidote one could apply for... it's a nightmare. As such, it was pretty shocking to find a passage where the authors excitedly discuss using stevia rebaudiana — the same sweet leaf hailed everywhere today as a wonderful, healthy sugar alternative — as an anti-fertility agent. What's more, it had apparently been used traditionally by indigenous Indian populations in Paraguay for a long time, and rats in studies had shown a large drop in fertility after being administered stevia... She reviewed recent studies which examined the effects of diet soda and found that 30 percent of American adults and 15 percent of American children consume artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame, sucralose, and saccharin. She says: “There is a lot of pressure from the public health sector to find solutions to counter the rise of obesity and chronic disease, and there is a lot of money and business at stake for the food industry as it develops and promotes these products. Beverages are becoming political issues as government leaders and politicians seek regulation and taxing to limit their availability and consumption, but most of these measures exclude diet soft drinks because they are perceived as healthy. When it comes to making policy decisions, it’s more important than ever that the science is considered and that the public understands what the science says in order to help them make the best health decisions.” Apparently, artificial sweeteners confuse the body’s natural ability to manage calories based on tasting something sweet, and people consume sweet foods in excess, leading to a twice increased risk of metabolic syndrome. Research has found that diet soda leads to numerous health issues, including: 1. Type 2 Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome. The journal Diabetes Care published a 2009 study which showed that the consumption of diet soda is related to a 36 percent higher risk of metabolic syndrome and a 67 percent raised risk of type 2 diabetes. Artificial sweeteners interfere with the gut-brain connection, leading to metabolic derangements. A team of experts at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel found that these drinks change the gut microbes by raising the risk of metabolic diseases. They fed mice with zero-calorie sweeteners found in these drinks, such as saccharin, aspartame, and sucralose, and they developed glucose intolerance. 2. Depression. The intake of more than 4 cans of soda a day is related to a 30 percent higher risk of depression, while the consumption of 4 cups of coffee provides protective effects and reduces the risk of depression by 10 percent. 3. Compromised Lungs. These drinks raise the risk of developing asthma and COPD symptoms. According to one Australian study, 13.3 percent of surveyed participants with asthma and 15.6 percent of those with COPD consumed more than 2 cups of soda daily. 4. Kidney Damage. Experts at Harvard examined people who consumed soda drinks for more than 20 years and showed that the long-term diet soda drinking leads to a 30 percent greater reduction in kidney function. 5. Cardiovascular Disease. A study conducted at the University of Miami and Columbia University involved over 2,000 adults for 10 years and found that those who consumed these drinks had a higher risk of heart attacks and stroke, and had more chances to die due to heart diseases. 6. A Less Protected Brain. Aspartame, which is a common artificial sweetener in these drinks, has been found to damage the brain’s antioxidant defense system, so its long-term intake causes an imbalance in the antioxidant/pro-oxidant status in the brain, mostly via t the mechanism containing the glutathione-dependent system.
