It is a productivity measure, as opposed to profit-sharing which is a profitability measure. There are three major types of gainsharing: Scanlon plan: This program dates back to the 1930s and relies on committees to create cost-sharing ideas. Designed to lower labor costs without lowering the level of a firm's activity. The incentives are derived as a function of the ratio between labor costs and sales value of production (SVOP). Rucker plan: This plan also uses committees, but although the committee structure is simpler the cost-saving calculations are more complex. A ratio is calculated that expresses the value of production required for each dollar of total wage bill. Improshare: Improshare stands for "Improved productivity through sharing" and is a more recent plan. With this plan, a standard is developed that identifies the expected number of hours to produce something, and any savings between this standard and actual production are shared between the company and the workers.

ISS follows a three-step process in the implementation of group gainshare plans based on the Scanlon EPIC Principles. As the process unfolds it can all be abandoned at any time by management since ALL preparation is experimental and the final plan must be approved and endorsed by management and by at least 90% of the rank and file through a secret ballot. 1) Perform an Extensive Analysis of Your Company's "Culture" The process begins with an extensive analysis of your company's "culture". Not all cultures are automatically conducive to group gainshare plans. The results of this analysis will present the client with their first decision point in the exploratory process. 2) Ascertain a Fair Baseline Number to Measure Results Given that the management's decision is to continue implementation, the next step is to ascertain a fair "baseline" number that will be used to determine whether collective effort, as maximized by the plan exceeds historical standards. This is a critical step to the three constituencies that make up the Scanlon triangle: the customer, the shareholder, and the employees. 3) Build the Participation / Involvement Model The final step is building the participation/involvement model that is the heart and soul of the Scanlon system. This involves the formation of Productivity Councils (the engines) and the Screening Committee (the CPU). ISS will be honored to work with you in maximizing your human resources. In this video Gower Idrees, CEO of RareBrain Capital, discusses how you can structure employee compensation that correlates directly to results. Most companies give bonuses or employee raises with little regard to actual results driven by the employees. This creates an ongoing problem. An employee gets a 5% raise this year and they expect at least the same next year. The problem worsens as employee tenure lengthens because the business has to pay more and more money every year with little to no direct correlation to performance. In many cases we find that employees are grossly overpaid with little to no regard to the market replacement value which in many cases is significantly lower. We see the results of this most often in a business sale, where after acquiring a company, the new buyer will choose to in some cases replace overpaid employees with employees at market wages. So what’s the answer? How do you structure employee compensation that correlates directly to results? A method we have used effectively is called “Gain Sharing”. The premise of gain sharing is simple. Give us a gain and we will share it with you. This can apply to a company, a department, a team, a process, a function, or an individual. For example, a manufacturer wants to reduce its products’ cost per unit. The existing cost per unit is $8.70. After employing a gainsharing plan the company successfully lowered its cost per unit to $8.40. The company has realized a gain of $.30 per unit, which when multiplied by overall production yields a gain of $300,000. There are many different ways for the company to divide the new gains. Here is a simple example. The company keeps 60% for shareholders and/or operating capital. It puts 20% in an overall employee bonus pool, pays 10% to the manager responsible, and allocates 10% to an employee group with the biggest contribution to the gain. While gainsharing plans can be complex, if implemented correctly they can be remarkably effective primarily because there is no entitlement associated with gain sharing. So if a company, department, team, or employee does not create a gain, they are simply not entitled to any gain sharing. In many cases, gainsharing can also serve as a great alternative to giving your employees equity in the company.

Vex’ahlia presses their dwarven captive for information. The Duergar only laughs at the barbarian's plight, and spits out warnings of the “master” that awaits them below, before Vax’ildan finally puts her out of her misery. After an uneasy night’s rest for the party and hours of meditation for Keylith, the druid is thankfully able to restore Grog’s mind, and the Vox Machina continue down through the great cavern. They pass through a gutted goblin village strewn with corpses, and eventually spy another group of Duergar, dragging along 3 dwarven captives. Scanlan and the twins whip out their flying carpet and tail the Duergar from afar, over a thin, creeking rope bridge. Scanlon disappears from sight, and now invisible, carefully makes his way into a war camp teeming with dark dwarves, ogres, and trolls. There he bears witness to an Illithid controlling all those around him, devouring the mind of one of the three dwarven miners. After catching his companions up, the group hatches a plan to lure their enemies into an illusion and drop them to their doom, into the cavern below the bridge. It is partially successful, but then, while acting as living bait, Vax’s mind is stunned by the Illithid and he is almost dropped to his death before Tiberius swoops in to save him. With the plan now in disarray, Vex and Keylith decide to delve into the chasm below the bridge, in spite of their companions’ protests. Their instincts serve them well though, and hidden behind a subterranean waterfall they find a cave. Within it awaits a powerful and unlikely ally.
