Wondering what is Medigap? In this video, we explain what Medigap plans are, how they work, what they cover, and why it’s so important not to miss your one-time Medigap open enrollment window. You’ll have inpatient and outpatient deductibles to pay as well as copays for things like visits to the doctor. The most expensive thing that you also must pay is your coinsurance. Medicare Part B only pays for 80% of your expenses. This leave you paying the other 20% for things like labwork, diagnostic imaging, medical supplies and even big-ticket items like outpatient surgery or chemotherapy. What’s really concerning is that there no cap our out of pocket limit on that 20%. You pay it forever with no stopping point. Paying 20% of the cost of a surgery or dialysis could be financially devastating. Fortunately, there’s a way for you to protect yourself against those future expenses, and that is by signing up for a Medigap policy during your Medigap open enrollment window. What Medigap Plans Are A Medigap plan, sometimes called a Medicare supplement plan – same thing – is a supplemental health insurance policy that fills in the gaps in Medicare’s coverage. Here’s how it works: Your medical provider bills Medicare for your healthcare services that you received. Medicare processes your claim and pays it share, minus any deductibles and coinsurance that you would normally be responsible for. Medicare then sends the remainder of that bill onto your Medigap policy which will then kick in to help you pay for some of those deductibles, copays and coinsurance that would normally be your responsibility. What Medigap Plans Cover There are currently 10 standardized Medigap plans available in all states except Minnesota, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin, where plans are slightly different. But most of you will have these 10 plans to choose from, and each plan covers a different set of benefits. The most comprehensive plans, like Plan F and Plan G, leave you with little to nothing out of pocket. There are also less comprehensive Medigap plans like Plan N with lower premiums that pay for some of your gaps and leave others for you to pay. This gives you the ability to choose a plan that has the right price and the right benefits for you. Because the federal government standardized Medigap plans in most states, you can shop the plans in your area based on price. For example, the benefits for a Plan G policy are the same no matter which insurance company you purchase it from. Here at Boomer Benefits, when we provide quotes for our clients, we quote all the insurance companies in their zip code, and in addition to their current rates, we also look at their rate increase history. This helps us narrow down to the insurance company that is the perfect choice for that client. Your One-Time Medigap Open Enrollment Window Everyone gets a 6-month open enrollment window to enroll in any Medigap plan they want. This window starts with your Part B effective date, and it is a “use it or lose it” window. This can be really important if you have some serious health conditions. You’ll have this one opportunity to buy a Medigap plan with no underwriting and no health questions asked. Sometimes we meet people who tell us that they were pretty healthy when they turned 65, so they failed to exercise that one-time chance to get any Medigap policy they wanted. They thought that they would just wait until they get sick, and then they would buy the Medigap policy. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work like that in most states. If you miss your open enrollment window, you can still apply for a Medigap plan later on, but they don’t have to accept you. They can turn you down for health conditions, so don't miss your one chance to enroll in a Medigap plan if you have health conditions. When I consider purchasing an individual health insurance plan for myself or my family, do I have any financial obligations beyond the monthly premium and annual deductible? Answers: It depends on the plan, but some plans have the following cost-sharing elements that you should be aware of. Co-Payments: Some plans include a co-payment, which is typically a specific flat fee you pay for each medical service, such as $30 for an office visit. After the co-payment is made, the insurance company typically pays the remainder of the covered medical charges. Deductibles: Some plans include a deductible, which typically refers to the amount of money you must pay each year before your health insurance plan starts to pay for covered medical expenses. Coinsurance: Some plans include coinsurance. Coinsurance is a cost sharing requirement that makes you responsible for paying a certain percentage of any costs. The insurance company pays the remaining percentage of the covered medical expenses after your insurance deductible is met. Out-of-pocket limit: Some plans include an out-of-pocket limit. Typically, the out-of-pocket limit is the maximum amount you will pay out of your own pocket for covered medical expenses in a given year. The out-of-pocket limit typically includes deductibles and coinsurance. But, out-of-pocket limits don't typically apply to co-payments. Lifetime maximum: Most plans include a lifetime maximum. Typically the lifetime maximum is the amount your insurance plan will pay for covered medical expenses in the course of your lifetime. Exclusions & Limitations: Most health insurance carriers disclose exclusions & limitations of their plans. It is always a good idea to know what benefits are limited and which services are excluded on your plan. You will be obligated to pay for 100% of services that are excluded on your policy. Beginning September 23, 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (health care reform) begins to phase out annual dollar limits. Starting on September 23, 2012, annual limits on health insurance plans must be at least $2 million. By 2014 no new health insurance plan will be permitted to have an annual dollar limit on most covered benefits. Some health insurance plans purchased before March 23, 2010 have what is called "grandfathered status." Health Insurance Plans with Grandfathered status are exempt from several changes required by health care reform including this phase out of annual limits on health coverage. If you purchased your health insurance policy after March 23, 2010 and you're due for a routine preventive care screening like a mammogram or colonoscopy, you may be able to receive that preventive care screening without making a co-payment. You can talk to your insurer or your licensed eHealthInsurance agent if you need help determining whether or not you qualify for a screening without a co-payment. There are five important changes that occurred with individual and family health insurance policies on September 23, 2010. Those changes are: 1. Added protection from rate increases: Insurance companies will need to publically disclose any rate increases and provide justification before raising your monthly premiums. 2. Added protection from having insurance canceled: An insurance company cannot cancel your policy except in cases of intentional misrepresentations or fraud. 3. Coverage for preventive care: Certain recommended preventive services, immunizations, and screenings will be covered with no cost sharing requirement. 4. No lifetime maximums on health coverage: No lifetime limits on the dollar value of those health benefits deemed to be essential by the Department of Health and Human Services. 5. No pre-existing condition exclusions for children: If you have children under the age of 19 with pre-existing medical conditions, their application for health insurance cannot be declined due to a pre-existing medical condition. In some states a child may need to wait for the state's open-enrollment period before their application will be approved.

But the feature that allows visitors to see insurance plans without creating an account provides only limited information, and may lead users to think they will pay less than they actually will.The browser is only meant to be a preview of plans and prices, according to Joanne Peters, spokeswoman with the Department of Health and Human Services.For consumers to see the actual premium they will pay, including potential tax credits, they must complete an application, she said.This browser, however, may be the best consumers in the 36 states serviced by healthcare.gov have to go on. Multiple attempts to log into healthcare.gov were unsuccessful.Here's what the browser won't tell you:Your age-based premiums: One problem is that the plan browser is based on only two ages. And since premiums rise with age, it's likely many people will find pricier plans when they actually apply.If a visitor is looking for coverage for himself, the browser feature only asks if he is younger than 50 or age 50 and older. For younger folks, it spits back prices for a 27-year-old. What Does Medicare Supplement Plan G Cover? Medigap Plan G provides the exact same coverage that the Medigap Plan F provides, with the exception of the Medicare Part B deductible. On Medigap Plan G, you pay the Medicare Part B deductible yourself, each year as you go to the doctor (or for any Medicare Part B charges), instead of the plan paying it for you- like on Medigap Plan F. It's a calendar-year deductible, so once it's met (2018 Part B deductible is $183), everything above that is covered at 100%. For those with Medicare, Medicare Supplement Insurance (also called Medigap) can help ease the burden of potentially high out-of-pocket costs such as deductibles, coinsurance and other fees. There are a total of 10 to choose form, and this video will cover the 5 most popular. Medicare And You Guidebook: 0:18 Medicare Plan F: 1:48 Medicare Plan C: 3:37 Medicare Plan G: 5:03 Medicare Plan N: 6:12 Medicare Plan HDF: 2:52 Price's: 7:02 Lets start with the most popular plan there is… Plan F. Why is it so popular you ask, probably because it covers 100% of the gaps in medicare. So if you have a medicare approved claim, your plan F will pay anything left over that original medicare parts A and B do not cover. So It will pay all your extra co pays and deductibles that medicare does not cover. Some other things medicare and medicare supplements do not cover are dental, eye care, cosmetic surgery, acupuncture, hearing aids, and long term care. So as long as you do not go to some witch doctor for you care or need any of these services your Plan F will cover 100% of the cost. Now because plan F covers the most it is usually the most expensive per month. As you can see a 65 year old female from Hebron Illinois will pay $134.59 to be on a plan F. We will use this premium to show the value in some of the other plans later. Now High Deductible Plan F covers %100 of what medicare does not cover, but you need to meet a $2180 dollar deductible first. That is the only difference. So, You must pay for medicare coved costs up to a deductible amount of $2180 before your policy pays anything. As you can see High Deductible Plan F is much cheaper than plan F with it being $102 less. This is a good option for people on very limited budgets, that are very healthy. You defiantly do not what to sign up for this plan at 65 if you have already had health issues, because you will meet you max deductible fairly quickly. The next option is plan C. Now this is exactly the same as plan F and covers 100% of the gaps in medicare with one difference. It does not pay for part B excess charges. Now part B excess charges are when doctors do not take medicare assignment. So some doctors can charge you 15% more than what medicare is willing to pay for a test, visit, or procedure. Lets give you an example. Lets say you have a surgery with a doctor that does not accept assignment. According to medicare his service cost $1000. Well medicare will pay $800 of it and your supplement will cover the other $200. But this doctor is able to charge 15% more because he does not accept assignment. So he bills you $150 more, and with a Plan C you will have to pay that $150 bill… Now you can avoid this by just asking your doctor if they take medicare assignment, and You will actually find out that most doctors do take assignment and it only happens in rare cases. Now lets look at the premium, its $146.42 and that is $12 more a month than the plan F. So you get less benefits for more cost, so this would not be a good recommendation for our 65 year old female from Hebron Illinois. Next up is plan G and much like plan C it covers everything that medicare plan F covers except for one thing. Instead of not covering part B excess charges like plan C, plan G does not cover your medicare part B deductible. So you pay for the first $166 of medicare approved amounts that fall under part B of medicare. Now with plan F the insurance company pays this $166 for you but they do charge you every year to make this payment for you. You can see how much this payment is by doing some simple math. So if plan F cost $134.59 and plan G cost $104.59 then the difference per year is $360. Now subtract the $166. So basically you are paying an insurance company $194 a year to write a check for you. So, With plan F leaving the market in 2020 along with the savings that go with writing your own check for your part B deductible, I can see plan G becoming much more popular in the years to come. Now plan N covers everything plan F does, except for 3 things. It does not cover part b excess charges much like plan C, and it also does not cover your part B deductible of $166 just like plan G. Now whats the third thing, well there is also a $20 copay for office visits and a $50 copay for emergency room visits that do not result in inpatient admission. So there are some copays, the one deductible for $166, and excess charges, but this can be a good option for people that what a reasonable premium, that are in good health, and that do not mind paying a copay once in a while. The total premium for our 65 year old from Hebron Illinois would be $88.89 a month.
