When she had her blood tested, doctors saw that the level of vitamin D in her body was 5.9 nanograms per milliliter. Vitamin D supplement solved her health problems. -People with low vitamin D levels were two times more likely to suffer from bone pain in their ribs, legs, and joints. -Researchers found a connection between low vitamin D levels and bone loss in the 1,100 menopausal and postmenopausal women that participated in the study. -One of the many consequences of a weakened immune system is that your skin cells may start producing more oil. Another skin problem that can result from a shortage of vitamin D in your system is psoriasis. -Studies have shown that people who have enough vitamin D lose weight more easily. -Vitamin D boosts the production of special compounds that are vital for the wound-healing process. In certain studies, Americans has been found to be the #1 population in vitamin D deficiency. Some of the main symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are a weakened immune system, candida or bacterial overgrowth, emotional ups and downs, hormone imbalance, trouble putting on muscle or losing weight, weakened bones or teeth, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Vitamin D supports having a healthy immune response, digestive health, hormone balance, and more. The biggest causes of vitamin D deficiency are not getting enough sunlight, certain chemicals from plastic bottles (bpa), and toxicity. Try to get outside everyday for about 20-30 minutes of natural sunlight. Certain foods that are sources of vitamin D are wild caught fish, raw fermented milk, mushrooms, and eggs. However, there are small amounts in the food you eat. For a good supplement, I would recommend a high quality vitamin D supplement. You don’t want to take vitamin D2, but you do want to take vitamin D3. For supplementation, take about 2000-5000 IUs a day. However, if you have a severe deficiency, then for 1-2 months, you may take 5000 IUs twice daily. Lastly, you want to take your vitamin D3 with some form of fat like coconut oil or avocado to help absorption in your body. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have found that persons with lower blood levels of vitamin D were twice as likely to die prematurely as people with higher blood levels of vitamin D. The finding, published in the June 12 issue of American Journal of Public Health, was based on a systematic review of 32 previous studies that included analyses of vitamin D, blood levels and human mortality rates. The specific variant of vitamin D assessed was 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the primary form found in blood. Garland said the blood level amount of vitamin D associated with about half of the death rate was 30 ng/ml. He noted that two-thirds of the U.S. population has an estimated blood vitamin D level below 30 ng/ml. Possible 75% Less Cancer Deaths with Vitamin D with Carole Baggerly and Dr. Cedric Garland Transcription: Announcer: This program is a presentation of UCTV for educational and non-commercial use only. Carole Baggerly (B): Fully 75% of breast cancer and colon cancer deaths could be prevented if we had somewhere between 40 and 60 ng/ml of Vitamin D blood serum levels in our bodies. I'm Carole Baggerly with GrassrootsHealth and today we are interviewing Dr. Cedric Garland from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine about a phenomenal new paper that he has just published with that information in it. Dr. Garland, I am so glad to have you here! Dr. Cedric Garland (G): It's a pleasure to be here, Carole! B: Alright! I want to know, I can tell for myself why this is an exciting revelation but please tell me from your standpoint as a scientist, why is this exciting news for you? G: There's a couple aspects of it. One is that this computer modeling that we did shows that we could eliminate about 50,000 cases a year of breast cancer in the United States and Canada and the same for cancer of the colon. And we're pretty excited about that because these are hard diseases to prevent. We estimate we could prevent 75% of deaths in cancer patients. We think we could reduce the mortality precipitously. And also, this is the first time where we've been able to present a new model for the cause of cancer. It's called the Dinomite Model. It starts with a capital D which refers to decoupling of cells. It could equally refer to vitamin D because Vitamin D prevents this process. But it's the very first step in several steps that leads to cancer and it's a far earlier step than the later ones where we normally try to screen early. If you think of the first letter in Dinomite as being D for decoupling, I for initiation, N for natural selection, O for overgrowth, that's the point where we normally begin screening. But now we have a method of screening beginning with the D, far before the cancer even has the opportunity to undergo any further growth. It's a more rational approach to screening, will detect cancers earlier, will head them off and we won't be dealing with more or less untreatable cancers which is what we must face now most of the time. B: Implications for our current way of doing things? G: Well, it would revolutionize screening because we no longer will have to wait till a tumour is formed in order to detect it but we can intervene early with the Vitamin D test that allows people to determine the level of Vitamin D in their blood. It's a metabolite called 25 Vitamin D. It needs to be in a particular range, 40-60 ng/ml, and if it's in that range we will achieve the benefits that I just mentioned, the reduction by 50,000 cases each in breast and colon cancer and the 75% reduction overall in mortality from those diseases. B: I'm assuming that if one can prevent deaths one could possibly prevent the occurrence to start with? G: Well, that's what the 50,000 of each disease is! We're actually preventing the occurrence in most people but in a few, the percentage that develops it, we have a means of keeping them from dying and keeping the cancer from coming back after the definitive treatment has been performed. B: That's fantastic! And where is paper published? G: It's in Annals of Epidemiology. B: And the published date is? G: Its April 14th. B: Fantastic! And what should individuals do? I mean, people that have listened to this, what should they do? G: The first step is partner up with a doctor and order a test for Vitamin D. If you're not able to partner up with your doctor on it, order the test anyway! The important thing is to get a test done to determine what the level of Vitamin D is in your blood and seek counsel about what the appropriate level is. A consensus of experts in the field, scientists and physicians, has recently released a call to action specifying 40-60 ng/ml of serum 25-hydroxy Vitamin D so that's a reasonable target until you have the program fully worked out. That should be then the basis for selecting a dose of Vitamin D or getting out in the sun a moderate amount to the extent that one gets into that effective range for the prevention of these cancers. B: Thank you so much. Now I been using tanning beds for over 8 years. And I love it. It makes me feels good, especially in the winter the heat, decreases the winter blues with the light, and most importantly increases vitamin d, which helps with the bone health, increase immunity, and actually prevents some forms cancer. Also, getting vitamin d from UV has been shown to be better than supplements and food sources, which there isn't many of them..that aren't really appealing flsh liver, blood, guts, and eggs....mushrooms...then there is milk, which they supplement it in there ....and the reason why UV it is better: 1. you get more vitamin d. 2. There is no over dose of vitamin d with UV light. Remember, even if the sun is out, most of us are NOT outside to get enough sun exposure. Pus, lmost people are deathly afraid of the sun, thinking they’ll get skin cancer -- which is a big LIE. It’s true, that the sun will accelerate wrinkles. So, what I suggest is to cover your face, neck and upper chest, by wearing a big hat to prevent the sun from hitting those areas where we don’t want any wrinkles. And maybe cover your hands, especially for women… since they can also wrinkle and show signs of aging. I would rather you do NOT wear sunblock, since they’re filled with bad chemicals. Instead, go get some sun on the rest of your body parts -- arms, shoulders, legs, back and so forth. Do it for 15-30 minutes daily. Do NOT burn. Start low and build up. Second Best Way To Get Your Vitamin D - Supplements With all of that said, the next best way and the one which will be most convenient for us is through supplements. Even though, the sun will accelerate the absorption of the supplement as well… so still try to get some sunlight. You want to purchase Vitamin D3, not D2 or any other forms. Take about 5000 units daily. I take 10,000 units daily. But I also take 1 or 2 days OFF every week. Of course, the best way to know how much you need, is with a blood test. Try to get your levels over 50 ng/mL and preferably between 70-100 ng/mL Take it in the morning, with food. What About Food Sources? Lastly, you may be thinking, “can I get it from foods” and yes, you can. But, you’re just not going to get enough and it’s not consistent. Nutritional Yeast provides B vitamins, Electrolyte Powder helps provide minerals. Hey guys, we are going to talk about the 7 recommended supplements on a Ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting plan. The first one I am going to recommend is minerals. You want to potassium, magnesium, sodium and calcium those were electrolytes, and then trace minerals. Because minerals helps reduce insulin resistance and it puts you into fat burning a lot better. Plus, these minerals are alkaline which offset some of the uric acid buildup that comes from the ketogenic diet to lessen the chance to get a gout or the uric acid kidney stones. Number 2 vitamin B1, this is essential in the adaptation of sugar burning into fat burning, and it is also great to relieve stress. Vitamin B3 is really good for lowering cholesterol that is coming out of the fat cells or liver and it is also good to support the liver in general. Vitamin B5 is another key B vitamin that is essential in the adaptation to fat burning. If you are deficient in B5 and B1, you may notice more fatigue, keto flu and keto rash, any of those symptoms. Number 5, vitamin A which is also essential in dealing with insulin resistance and you would get vitamin A in cod liver oil, grass-fed cheese, grass-fed liver and egg yolks. No. 6 vitamin D and I recommend vitamin D3 version, this is really good for insulin resistance and improving that. It is also in cod liver oil, egg yolk. In fact if you consume cod liver oil, you get a 50/50 split of vitamin A and vitamin D so you could kill 2 birds at 1 stone. No. 7 choline which is essential of getting the fat off the liver. I recommend doing electrolyte powder for the minerals. I recommend nutritional yeast for B1, B3, B5 and it even has choline. I have a version that has non-fortified, it is in a tablet form with added B12. You have electrolyte powder, nutritional yeast, and cod liver oil and if you really have fatty liver you could have choline in addition to the choline that is in nutritional yeast to strip off the fat from the liver. Vitamin D A hormone, not an actual vitamin, that your skin makes when exposed to sunlight, so it does not need to acquire it from food if adequate sunlight is available The only natural foods that contain vitamin D are fish and egg yolks Most of us are deficient in vitamin D as we do not spend much time outdoors. Additionally, where we live can limit our access to vitamin D - if you live below 37 degrees south or above 37 degrees north you do not have access to sufficient sunlight except during the summer months. ( This line of latitude crosses below Colorado, Utah and Kansas, so the majority of us in the US require additional dietary vitamin D throughout the year even if we spend time outdoors Sunscreen and skin pigmentation can also act as barriers to vitamin D absorption What Does Vitamin D Do? Reduces belly fat Of all the places to lose fat, the middle of our bodies is usually the hardest and the most important, both for looking lean and for being healthy. Waist-to-hip ratio is a factor in your risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes Research bomb: A study published in the journal of Clinical Nutrition had 23 overweight participants who all went through a 12-week resistance training program. Half of them took 4,000 IU’s of vitamin D while the others received a placebo. While both groups lost the same amount of fat, the group that took the vitamin D supplements were more likely to have lowered their waist-to-hip ratio to a greater extent when compared to the placebo group. (3) Hormone Regulation and Bone Health The parathyroid glands, located in your neck, release parathyroid hormone. Parathyroid hormone regulates the calcium in your body: When the level of calcium in your blood is low, your parathyroid releases PTH. PTH signals for calcium to be leeched from bones and released into the blood, while also telling your kidneys to create more bioavailable vitamin D. This form of active vitamin D tells your gut to absorb more calcium, as long as you have sufficient vitamin D available. When you are deficient in vitamin D, your body will not absorb enough calcium from your diet and too much calcium will be taken from the bones to be available in the blood. Calcium plays more roles than just bone health - it is crucial for proper functioning of your nervous and muscular systems, so the body is able to take calcium from the bones to perform other functions. Vitamin K Vitamin K is helpful in blood clotting and bone strength. May also help to prevent heart disease, prostate cancer and Alzheimer’s Vitamin K2 and vitamin D3 work together to strengthen bones through their impact on calcium While vitamin D3 essentially regulates how much calcium is absorbed in the diet, vitamin K2 tells the calcium where to go, directing it to bones rather than soft tissues. When calcium attaches to arteries, known as hardening of the arteries, it can lead to cardiovascular complications. Without vitamin K2, the calcium absorbed will not go towards strengthening your bones, and thus vitamin K2 is crucial in the functioning of vitamin D3. Vitamin K2 comes from meats, eggs, hard cheeses and insects. Many people are also deficient in vitamin K2. Diet and Supplementation The best way to stay healthy is to eat a balanced diet full of leafy greens, fruits, veggies and lean proteins. This is how we can be sure we are obtaining a full range of vitamins and minerals. Vitamin D3 is one vitamin/hormone that we often have to supplement. If your supplement vitamin D3, be sure to obtain enough vitamin K2, either through a diet with meats and eggs, or through supplementation as well. In this video, I cover the exact choices I make when it comes to the supplements I use to help me build muscle and stay lean year round. From the vitamins and minerals I take to the workout protein powders and formulas, everything I take in a day is covered and explained. For me, my morning starts with my essential fatty acids. I take both an omega-6 fatty acid in the form of evening primrose oil, as well as a high grade pharmaceutical omega-3 fish oil. The primrose is something I take because I tend to eat a very clean diet almost devoid of the highly processed foods that commonly are in abundance in the average diet. That combined with the fact that I carry a low body fat percentage year round, tends to make my essential omega-6’s that much more essential. I also have Reynaud’s, which is a form of impaired circulation to the hands and feet, that primrose oil has been shown to be helpful in treating. The omega-3’s are taken once in the morning, and again at lunch and at dinner. The grade of the oils is of prime importance when choosing an omega-3. Like prescription grade lovaza, Dr. C’s Omega-3’s are an incredibly potent form of essential fatty acids that have been shown to not only promote overall health and well being but also speed up muscle recovery by helping you recover from muscle inflammation. I take 1500mg of vitamin C, 1000 iu of vitamin E, CoQ10 and green tea extract to meet these needs here. As I point out in the video, I do get adequate levels of both C and E in y diet, however I still take these as an insurance policy and investment in my own health. Just be sure that you don’t take too much vitamin E as it is a fat soluble vitamin that can be taken in excess and not easily removed from the body. Green tea extract provides additional blood sugar stabilizing effects via it’s impact on insulin sensitivity and therefore finds it’s way into my daily supplement regime every morning. Each of the above vitamins are taken once with breakfast as described in the video. Next I take the ultimate insurance policy, a multivitamin. I believe again that while we tend to get the majority of our major vitamins from food, we do not necessarily address all of our micronutrient needs (especially if we tend to follow somewhat restrictive eating plans or styles) so I feel more comfortable taking a multi as a backup. One of the most important areas of late for me has been joint recovery supplementation. Having dealt with a bad right shoulder from a torn labrum, as well as two bad knees, I not only felt the need to take but actually set out and developed what I feel is the absolute most comprehensive joint recovery formula available. Being a working mom is tough. Anyone who says otherwise is pretty much lying. Before I had my son I wasn't the best at taking care of myself. I always could've been sleeping more, drinking more water, exercising more, losing those few extra pounds, etc., etc. When I had my son, self-care went so completely out the window that I never even had time to think about all the things I shoulda coulda woulda been doing to take care of myself. About a year ago I started making a few easy changes to jumpstart a little self-care, we're talking major baby steps. There are three vitamin supplements I now take every morning that so drastically improve my energy levels and ability to get stuff done that without them I don't know what I'd do with myself. I talk about my vitamin routine in this video in the hopes of encouraging all your busy working mamas out there to make changes -- however small -- to start taking better care of yourself.
