If z-bar or metal protecting the base of a building foundation or basement is installed incorrectly, then you could have a variety of different problems. I've always been amazed at how poorly some homes are constructed and then sold to someone who doesn't even have a clue about the future home repairs they're going to be responsible for. This is another one of those problems.

www.protradecraft.com | SUBSCRIBE please Protect the eave from ice dams and sideways rain Step one in steep slope roofing is the edge flashing. One common method is to lay the edge metal under the eaves membrane, and over the rake membrane. The layering uses gravity to direct water out of the assembly. Another way is to storm proof the edge by folding the membrane down over the gap between roof deck and fascia, layering metal flashing on top sealed with another strip of flashing membrane. Regardless of how you do it, make sure that the eaves membrane extends at least 2 feet inside the outer face of the wall, It probably means a second course of edge membrane. Step by step: Overlap seams about 3 inches, depending on what the manufacturer specifies. Install drip edge metal to the eaves beginning at the back of the house, working toward the most visible section of roof, to avoid gaps that catch the eye. Seal the top edge of the eaves metal with flashing tape or a thin strip of roof membrane. Rake membrane only needs to be a single width and should extend up all of the rake edges. Work the edge metal up the rake from the bottom. The upper pieces should overlap the lower ones. Visible gaps between the flashing are less important than the water-injection system that would result from slipping upper pieces under lower ones. The bottom of the rake metal should extend past the eave flashing. Sweating the details at the edges will keep ice dams and windblown rain out of your roof. — Technical support from Doug Horgan, of BOWA, a Design, Build, Remodel, and Consultation company in McLean and Middleburg, Virginia and Don Shaw, of IKO roofing. Water stains, dirt, debris and dripping water behind a gutter are usually the result of poorly installed or missing drip edge. Most premade drip edge flashing at home improvement and roofing supply stores is only available in one or two sizes. This is fine for some houses, but often the rain gutters are hung at different heights and angles on the gutter board to facilitate proper drainage. This leads to a gap between the gutter and the drip edge, where rain can splash up against the gutter board and run behind the gutter. A professional roofer, with the proper tools and experience, will be able to fashion custom drip edge or gutter apron from sheet metal stock to prevent this problem. Please visit www.roofingcontractorreview.com for more drip edge, flashing, and professional roofing tips and techniques.

(See below for a shopping list, tools, and steps.) Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Shopping List for How to Install Roof Shingles: - 8-inch aluminum drip edge - 1 1/4-inch galvanized roofing nails - 30-lb. asphalt roofing felt paper - 3-tab shingles Tools List for How to Install Roof Shingles: - Chalk line - Tape measure - Hammer - Rafter square - Utility knife Steps for How to Install Roof Shingles: 1. These project guidelines are for low roofs that allow easy access, such as those on porches, sheds, or doghouses. For larger roofs, hiring a professional roofing crew with proper fall protection is advised. 2. Line up aluminum drip edge flush with the edge of the roof and make a pencil line at the top on each end of the house. 3. Using the chalk line, snap a line between the two marks to get a straight edge. 4. Pull the drip edge down about a half-inch from that line to create a gap between the drip edge and the fascia board. 5. Nail the drip edge in place using 1 1/4-inch galvanized roofing nails and a hammer. 6. Repeat steps for gabled ends, installing the drip edge up the roof along the gable. 7. Lay out 30-lb. asphalt roofing felt paper and nail it in place using 1 1/4-inch galvanized roofing nails. 8. To lay out the design for the shingles, begin at the bottom of the roof and place a tape measure 1/2 inch from the edge of the roof to ensure the shingles overhang the drip edge. 9. Mark 12 inches up on the roof for the first course of shingles, then mark every 5 inches all the way up the roof to set your reveal. Do this on both sides of the roof. 10. Using the chalk line, snap a straight line on each 5-inch increment. 11. Use the chalk line to snap a straight line vertically every 6 inches. 12. Install a starter course by cutting off the three tabs on a shingle, leaving only the top tar section. Please find this product at http://absupply.net/ This video is to bring you a closer look at the Pemko 345C. This is a clear anodized aluminum drip cap is what this is. This is a drip cap because this is attached to. This model is typically attached to the bottom of the door to help prevent water from collecting and pooling underneath the door. This model can also be installed at the header, but typically Pemko's 346 is what you would see at the header because the projection is significantly greater. This can be installed bottom of the door or on the header. If it is installed on the bottom of the door, you will want to order basically the door size except of course if you are mounting it on the push side of the door which means you would be installing that between the stops typically. If you are installing it on the header, generally you would order it not only the size of the door but the outside dimension of that header. People who are in the know, people who make a living by installing doors and hardware always use drip caps on exterior doors. Always. There are people that make a living as a door installation professional that swear by the effectiveness of something so simple as a piece of aluminum in this shape mounted in a strategic location. So, the 345 is representative of Pemkos drip cap the smaller dimension of the two. I coincidentally have Pemko's 346 here and you can see the difference. The 346 is significantly wider or greater projection. Now dimensionally there is an image below this video that shows everything important about this unit. You can see from that image that it is 1-1/2" overall height, I'm holding it upside down of course. Projection is 9/16", little bit less important of a dimension in terms of installing it but none the less, it is the important dimension. Available in several different finishes. Dark bronze, painted white, satin nickel, gold, milled aluminum as well. This is clear anodized. Available in several different lengths. If you have need for a custom length, by all means let us know by ordering the next longest piece or pieces and indicate in the comment field what length you would like for us to cut the material back to. The reasoning is if you had to take this 36" piece and cut it down to 32" you would eliminate that slotted hole there and the next one is all the way over here. Speaking of holes, screws are included in a complementary finish. If you have a need for a custom length, order it by ordering the next longest piece on the website and indicate in the comment field what length you would like for us to cut the material back to. The reasoning with that is if you were to cut that down you would eliminate that slotted hole. You would be left with having to drill a new hole and drilling a slotted hole of course is difficult. It is nice to have those slotted holes from the factory so that you can tailor this to the exact conditions of the frame or the door. Your sill may not be level; your door may not be plumb, etc. You might when drilling the pilot holes for the screw, misdrill it a little bit. You know when you are drilling steel or wood or aluminum or fiberglass, that drill has a tendency to walk a little bit before it pierces through if you have not used a center punch. So if you order a custom length, we will not only locate this first slotted hole at the proper distance from the edge, but the proper center to center as well. Pemko is a full line manufacturer of all things weather stripping related. Not only drip caps like this, but thresholds and perimeter gasketing and door sweeps. Material made of aluminum, stainless steel, architectural bronze, and they even have a full line of aluminum continuous geared hinges. Any questions on the Pemko 345C Clear Anodized Aluminum Door Drip Cap or any other Pemko product, please feel free to reach out to us. Thank you.

In this video, I show you how I install the drip edge for a peel and stick underlayment for the best barn 12x16 Barn style shed install the Denver model that I purchased at home depot. Transcription: I just wanted to show you why I put the flashing the drip edge underneath the paper because if you watch any installation video they're gonna have you put the drip edge on top of the paper the reason I did it underneath the paper is because this is a sticky bitumen product and it never really made sense to me the way that the install goes so you put the your felt paper down and then you put your flashing over it but then there's still water could still go between the felt paper and underneath the flashing so this way I've since it's cold today I heated it up to glue it down a little bit better but this is glued now so this is glued with the bitumen to the drip edge so for the water to get underneath there it's got to go through the glue seam which is much less ly that likely to do so that's why I chose to put the drip edge underneath this sticky bitumen felt paper okay there you go thanks hope that's helpful you
