Couples face this issue because they don't use it during love making. Isn't there any way, other than using it to avoid unwanted pregnancies? The answer of this question is yes. There are many way to do this and in this post we are sharing some of them. The Safe Week (Calendar Method). Safe period to have love refers to day 1 to 7 and the last 4 to 5 days of cycle that lasts from 26 to 32 days. (Note: The safe week depends on your cycle length and regularity and is not a very reliable method). Withdrawal Method (Pull & Pray Method) As the name suggests, this method involves the man to remove his stiffy before his emission, which may lead to pregnancy. Birth Control Pills This could be a safest way for couple who are not ready to be parents. One of the most common and best options available is hormonal birth control pills regulating a woman’s fertility cycles for preventing pregnancy. The Effective Copper T This method requires a trained doctor to implant a device which can be removed at the time of desire to conceive by the couple. Sterilization This method can 100% guarantee to prevent the pregnancy risks, either for man or woman. However, it is a permanent procedure, so unless you are not sure to not want biological children of your own in the future, then do not opt for this.

On Condom Failure
I have always thought that sex ed and statistics should be the same course. There's no better way to show how vital stats is to your every day life than to look at statistics. Probabilities are so easy to misunderstand, and there are a lot that go into understanding the outcomes of sexual activity. There's a ton I didn't get into here...like that a common trap is that, in a pinch, one might have unprotected sex with no negative outcome, and that makes it /feel/ much safer for future times. Which, I think, is a common trap people fall into. There's also the fact that a 2% chance sounds pretty tiny, but it really does mean that, on average, if you have 50 couples using condoms perfectly, one of them is going to get pregnant in any given year. That's gonna seem weird and surprising and improbable and unfair to that couple, but statistically, it's exactly what we expected. Probabilities eventually collapse into reality, and then that couple no longer has a 2% chance of probability, they have a 100% chance, because they're pregnant, and everyone else has a 0% chance. Being one of the two percent isn't that weird. Here's the video I made on probability in 2010 that I'm actually pretty proud of: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpvE0Co66nU Most of the information used in this video came from the AMAZING AND WONDERFUL Guttmacher institute: https://www.guttmacher.org/ Contraceptive Use in the US: https://www.guttmacher.org/fact-sheet/contraceptive-use-united-states Unintended Pregnancy Rates: https://www.guttmacher.org/fact-sheet/unintended-pregnancy-united-states IUDs Cause Decrease in Unintended Pregnancies: https://www.vox.com/2016/3/2/11148108/unplanned-pregnancy-larc-iud ---- Subscribe to our newsletter! http://nerdfighteria.com/newsletter/ And join the community at http://nerdfighteria.com http://effyeahnerdfighters.com Help transcribe videos - http://nerdfighteria.info John's twitter - http://twitter.com/johngreen John's tumblr - http://fishingboatproceeds.tumblr.com Hank's twitter - http://twitter.com/hankgreen Hank's tumblr - http://edwardspoonhands.tumblr.com Preorder John's new book, Turtles All the Way Down, out October 10th 2017! What are the uses & side effects of birth control pills? - Dr. Shailaja N
Birth control pills have few side effects like headache, visual disturbances, mood changes, stomach upset, spotting, vaginal discharge, pain in the breast all these things can happen. But they last very few months. After few months they usually set in. They have very good contraceptive effect and also they have got non contraceptive benefits. Medical conditions like heavy menstrual bleeding and irregular cycles, painful menstruation, pre menstrual syndrome, acne, in all these conditions we use oral contraceptive pills as medications. Also it is protective against certain cancer like uterine cancer and ovarian cancer. So please don’t have myths about birth control pills. So consult your doctor and use it
Connection between Hormones & Seizures | Epilepsy
Watch more Epilepsy & Seizure Disorders videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/502029-Connection-between-Hormones-and-Seizures-Epilepsy Hormones play an important role in seizures and epilepsy. I guess the number one area being puberty, because when we see rapid puberty development in teenagers, we frequently see an outburst of seizures going on. Girls and women often have more seizures according to their menstrual cycle, so at the time of ovulation and at the time of menstruation they're more prone to have seizures. Because estrogen is pro-convulsive and Progesterone is somewhat protective and anti-convulsive. Now we've heard a lot of times parents will say to us, 'well is there some way to control the hormones, to help decrease the seizures?' What's your thought about that? What we do is we can use birth control pills to stop ovulation and to regulate the periods so that there's less seizures around that, but you have to be careful which birth control pills you're using. There's no real way of stopping puberty. There's no real way of stopping menstruation. Although there are long-acting oral contraceptives you can use. And then there are certain medications that we can use right around the time of her period to decrease the risk of seizures. So, basically, what we see is that, we know that certain patients are very sensitive to hormones, so that during puberty there can be an outburst of seizures. Uh, we know that during menstrual cycles and ovulation that can trigger them off. There are certain medications that you can discuss with your doctor that might be preventative that you can use right before ovulation or menstrual cycle that might be helpful, and so that would be an important conversation. Even using Progesterone, there are medications called Diamox, or even just adjusting the anti-seizure medication might be somewhat protective during that time. So, it's important to be aware of these transitions and aware that hormones can make a big difference.

As the song goes, “It’s a man’s world.” Well, maybe not so much anymore, but women still have a long way to go before they are completely equal with the male human race. There is still a problem with women getting assaulted all over the world. Even in places like the United States, women have to take extreme measures to defend themselves. From taking self-defenses classes to carrying pepper spray around, women have built up some impressive skills and people all over the world have created some incredible innovations to ensure that women are not only safe, but empowered as well. When a man decides that he wants to violate and assault another woman, he certainly deserves to endure a harsh punishment plus anything else that the law throws at him. But sometimes, when the law fails, we feel like we have to take the law into our own hands and create devices that not only protect women, but they also manage to ensure that the man violating them is physically tortured and punished. Here are ten of the most shocking self-defense devices for women. From stabbing a man’s junk to a condom with teeth, predators everywhere need to be afraid. Not only that, but men everywhere should be careful if they meet a woman who is a bit crazy and sadistic because you never know what will happen once you finally get to home plate with your girlfriend. Being a woman can be scary sometimes, and women need to do what they need to do to protect themselves. After the FemDefence ad was released, it opened a dialogue of how women can be protected from rape after it was discovered it wasn’t real. If you’re a predator, beware, as you never know…your next victim could be your undoing. Here are ten shocking self-defense devices for women. Are Condoms Really More Effective Than Pulling Out? STUDY
A recent study shows that the withdrawal method is almost as effective as using a condom to prevent pregnancy, but not STDs. This method isn’t promoted by condom companies, but during a study only four percent of couples get pregnant using the pullout method. Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian (The Point), Ben Mankiewicz (What The Flick?!), and Wes Clark Jr. hosts of The Young Turks discuss. Does this change your mind about condoms? Is it better to be safe than sorry? Let us know in the comments below. Read more here: http://www.closeronline.co.uk/2015/09/study-claims-pulling-out-nearly-as-effective-as-condoms-in-preventing-pregnancy “According to research, it has been claimed that the ‘pull out’ method is second best to condoms in effectiveness against pregnancy In sex education, most of us are told that the withdrawal method is NOT a safe way to protect yourself against pregnancy and STIs. Though the latter is no doubt true- withdrawal won’t stop you from catching something nasty- new research claims that the ‘pulling out’ method is second to condoms as the most effective method of contraception.” *** Get The Young Turks Mobile App Today! Breaking News - Why your birth control pill could kill you:
Oral contraceptives increase the risk of women suffering from certain types of stroke, new research suggests.Birth-control pills raise a woman's likelihood of suffering from an ischemic stroke, which occurs when an artery to the brain is blocked and makes up around 85 percent of cases of the life-threatening condition, a study found. The researchers, from Loyola University in Chicago, wrote: '[Among] women with other stroke risk factors, the risk seems higher and, in most cases, oral contraceptive use should be discouraged'.Such contraceptives do not raise the risk of hemorrhagic strokes, which are caused by bleeding in the brain, the research adds.Birth-control pills, patches and jabs are thought to rise the risk of artery blockages by making blood more likely to clot. The researchers stress, however, the risk is low among women without any risk factors for clotting. These include high-blood pressure and smoking. Most women have tried at least one hormonal contraceptive in their lives. In the US, nearly 37 percent of women are currently using birth control.Stroke is the third leading cause of death in women in the US, with 55,000 more females suffering than men every year.Women not being screened for stroke risk-factorsResults further suggest women are not being accurately screened for potential stroke risk-factors before being prescribed hormonal contraceptives.Among women at risk of the medical emergency, only 15 percent recall being advised not to take birth-control pills, while just 36 percent have been told to stop taking the medication. Some 15 percent of women carry on their birth-control course after being told to discontinue. The researchers believe this highlights the need for effective doctor-patient communication.Speaking of how women can reduce their stroke risk, the researchers wrote: 'The ideal drug is one with the lowest estrogen and progestin doses that will be effective in preventing pregnancy while minimizing adverse effects.'The findings were published in the journal MedLink Neurology.Starting periods before the age of 10 raises women's risk of strokesThis comes after research released last month suggested women who start their period before 10 years old, or enter the menopause younger than 45, have an increased risk of suffering a stroke.Menstruating before the age of 13 is often caused by obesity, which also puts individuals at a higher risk of cardiovascular events, such as stroke, a study review found. The menopause is associated with a decline in heart-protective hormones, such as oestrogen, which prevents fats from circulating in the bloodstream and raising women's stroke risk, the research adds.Experiencing hot flushes prematurely could mean women lack these protective hormones for longer than the average female, raising their risk of a blood clot in the brain.Fluctuating hormones during the menopause also increase so-called 'bad cholesterol' levels, further boosting such women's risk, the research adds.Study author Dr Kathr AutoNews- Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-5468371/Why-birth-control-pill-kill-you.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

I was told the pill would make me regular. I didn’t know that meant my ovaries would shut down!” The Queens of Self Care are back! If you’re period is irregular and you’ve been on the pill, or… If you’ve been told the pill will help you get regular… This conversation is MUST WATCH. Too many women, myself included, suffer the fallout of prescription birth control. It cost me my gall bladder for heaven’s sake! That’s why I’m so passionate about this conversation. If you’re concerned about “pill bleed…” If the idea of suppressing your natural reproductive cycle bothers you… (Synthetic hormones trick your brain into thinking your pregnant so your ovaries stop releasing eggs.) If your concerned about blood sugar regulation… If you’ve heard that birth control pills result in nutrient deficiencies that impact your period-cycling… If you’re a woman who wants to feel empowered by her moon cycle, and connected to her natural rhythms… You’re going to love this conversation between me and Dr. Jolene a naturopathic doctor. GET YOUR MOON CYCLE FLOWING AGAIN ← Watch now (Dr. Jolene has real answers) I particularly love Dr. Jolene’s emphasis on Food As Medicine. How effective are emergency contraceptive pills? - Dr. Shefali Tyagi
Emergency contraceptive pills are used to prevent pregnancy after intercourse. These contraceptive pills are required if you have any intercourse which is not protected or your condom is leaked or it was a forceful intercourse. These pills need to be taken with in 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. If taken 24 hours before they will prevent pregnancy up to 95%.If taken after 1 or two days effectiveness is up to 85%.It falls to 60% if taken later. These are not 100 % reliable there could be failure. These contraceptive pills work either by not allowing egg release from ovary or preventing released egg from fertilizing or If it is already fertilized it will prevent it from uterus accepting it.Side effects can be nausea ,bloating ,vomiting,Abnormal tenderness, irregular periods ,bleeding soon after taking pill etc.You have to use these as emergency when you have no choice. These have higher failure rate compare to other methods.Side effects will be there and periods will be effected seriously even with a single pill.

Can breastfeeding act as birth control after childbirth? - Dr. Nazira Sadique of Cloudnine
Lactational Amenorrhea is a protection in the sense, that is if the lady is totally breast-feeding during the day and atleast 2 to 3 feeds at night, with no top up feeds and 6 months no menses, then it is protective. But it is little tricky in the sense that it offers good protection. So but it is upto maybe 90% or more. But you can still follow contraception. Maybe you can start after 3 months, if you are very confident and the other thing is that you will not get periods. When you are totally lactating or totally breast feeding the baby, then you may be in amenorrhea, that is not getting periods. So that means maybe you are protected for 6 months. Once again I am telling you, once the baby starts weaning or once the baby starts taking solid foods or starts taking the top up feeds, then the protection goes. So as you are going from the amenorrhea phase to the phase of menstruation, that small gap of period that you are not protected, then you can conceive. So Lactational Amenorrhea protects as long as you are totally breast feeding and no menses. Once the baby starts on other feeds, the protection is gone.
Chances of pregnancy with emergency pill taken immediately after contact - Dr. Beena Jeysingh
Emergency contraception commonly known as the morning after pill i'm sure is known to many. What is this emergency contraception? It is a method of contraception that is used by a woman before she misses her periods or thinks that they might definitely be or more probability of having a failure having used to particular method of contraception. For example if there is a rupture in the barrier method of contraception like the condom. This emergency contraception works either by stopping the ovulation or postponing the ovulation or interfering with the normal post-ovulatory changes that are naturally occurs on the lining of the uterus following an ovulation to prepare a bit to receive if the egg is fertilized. This emergency contraceptive pill is best taken 72 hours within 72 hours of unprotected contact or exposure. But the efficacy is maximum if it is taken within 24 hours of the protected contact. But remember an emergency contraceptive pill does not give you a hundred percent protection against pregnancy. The efficacy is only between 90 and 95 percent. So after taking an emergency contraception if you miss your cycle, then please rule out a pregnancy first, it is a always preferable that you take an emergency contraceptive pill after consulting the gynaecologist especially if you are taking any medications on a long term basis for any chronic medical issues or if you have any history of any drug allergy. Also remember that this emergency contraceptive pill cannot be used in a regular basis as a regular contraception. It is not a substitute for a regular contraception and likewise it cannot be taken multiple times within one menstrual cycle as they can cause severe hormonal imbalance resulting in a normal uterine bleeding.

Preventing Cancer With A Pill
http://www.dailyrxnews.com/ They're proven to help prevent pregnancy, and new evidence suggests birth control pills may also prevent one type of cancer. A recent study found that birth control pills reduced the risk of endometrial cancer, or cancer of the uterus. The authors of this study estimated that use of the pill may have prevented about 400,000 cases of cancer. “The strong protective effect of oral contraceptives against endometrial cancer — which persists for decades after stopping the pill — means that women who use it when they are in their 20s or even younger continue to benefit into their 50s and older, when cancer becomes more common,“ said lead study author Valerie Beral, FMedSci, of the University of Oxford, in a press statement. Birth control pills, or oral contraceptives, contain the hormones progestin and estrogen, which prevent pregnancy.

Birth Control Pills Protect Against Cancer, Too | Herbal Sky
Birth Control Pills Protect Against Cancer, Too | Herbal Sky Birth Control Pills Protect Against Cancer, Too A small increased risk of breast cancer among women using hormonal contraceptives may be offset by the pill’s protective effects After a Danish study last week reported finding more breast cancer cases among women who use hormone-based birth control methods, many women were left wondering: How significant is the risk, and what are the alternatives? The answer will be different for each woman and will depend on such factors as her age and general healthand her other risks for breast cancer. But many doctors who prescribe contraceptives say there’s no cause for alarm — and no one should throw away her pills and risk an unwanted pregnancy. The increased breast cancer risk identified among hormone users in the study was small. For the vast majority of women in their 20s and 30s, breast cancer is rare to begin with, so this modest increase would not amount to many additional cases. And while birth control pills may slightly raise the odds of breast cancer — and have been associated with increases in cervical cancer, as well — the contraceptive’s relationship with cancer is complex. Oral contraceptives appear to reduce the incidence of some less common reproductive cancers, like endometrial cancer and ovarian cancer, which is often detected at an advanced stage, when it is hard to treat. There is some evidence that birth control pills may also reduce the odds of colorectal cancer. A British study of over 46,000 women who were recruited in 1968, during the early days of the pill, and followed for up to 44 years found that despite increases in breast and cervical cancers among those who used the pill, the effect on overall cancer rates was neutral, because other cancers were reduced. Other studies have reached the same conclusion. “In aggregate, over a woman’s lifetime contraceptive use might prevent more cancers” than it causes, said David J. Hunter, a professor of epidemiology and medicine at University of Oxford in Britain, who wrote a commentary on the Danish study published in The New England Journal of Medicine last week. “There is good data to show that five or more years of oral contraceptive use substantially reduces ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer risk, and may reduce colorectal cancer,” he said. “And the protection persists for 10 or 20 years after cessation.” While the new study’s findings about breast cancer are important, “these results are not a cause for alarm,” said Dr. JoAnn E. Manson, a professor of women’s health at Harvard Medical School and chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. “It’s really problematic to look at one outcome in isolation. Hormonal contraception has a complex matrix of benefits and risks, and you need to look at the overall pattern.” Dr. Hal Lawrence, an obstetrician-gynecologist and chief executive officer of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, said his biggest concern was that the study would “scare women away from effective contraception,” resulting in unwanted pregnancies. “We’re never going to eliminate all the potential risks that come with medication,” Dr. Lawrence said. “But we know a lot of the benefits, and the No. 1 benefit is preventing unintended pregnancies and the health and socio-economic risks that go along with that.” In some ways, the results of the new study were not surprising. Research had linked birth control pills to a modest increase in breast cancer decades ago. What was surprising was that the risk has persisted even with new pills that use lower doses of estrogen than the first generation of pills that came on the market — and that the increase in risk was experienced even by women who don’t take hormones orally, relying instead on implanted intrauterine devices that release a hormone “locally” into the uterus. Many older women who have completed their families and are at higher risk for breast cancer because of their age turn to the IUD precisely because they want to minimize exposure to hormones. So what are women to do? Here’s some advice from top doctors who were interviewed about the implications of the new research. Have SAFE SEX with Ronnie!
Want to have sex? DO IT SAFELY! In this sex education video, I'm going to teach you about SAFE SEX -- how to have sex without an accidental pregnancy or getting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). You will learn about safe sex, but also learn the English vocabulary and slang terms used to talk about this topic. Even though sex is so common and such an important part of life, I haven't seen any English textbooks that teach this material, and it's not often taught in English classes either! Well, that's why I'm here! Sex is a wonderful thing, but it is VERY important that you are educated on how to protect yourself and your partners. I'll talk about different types of birth control, like condoms, IUDs, and the pill, as well as the importance of getting tested so that your sex life can be happy and healthy. You'll also learn about some common sexually transmitted diseases, and the slang terms that native English speakers use to talk about them. Have sex, be safe, have fun, and have more sex. And remember: "She won't get sick if you cover your dick". QUIZ: https://www.engvid.com/safe-sex/ TRANSCRIPT Now, some of you guys might have seen lessons that I've done before about sex with Ronnie. Guess what? As much as I like to teach you about sex and all its fun, there is a very, very serious side to sex that I want to talk to you about. This is a public service announcement. No guitars, but we're going to talk about safe sex with me. Hi. Safe sex basically means preventing two things, the first one is present-... Preventing unwanted pregnancy, that means not having a baby. So, we know, hopefully, that if you have sex (intercourse) there's a nice chance that you can have a baby. But maybe you're a little too young to have a baby. Maybe you don't want a baby. Maybe having a baby would really mess up your life. So, we're going to go through two very important things, one is birth control, and the other one even I think more important than birth control is not dying because or not getting very sick because you have contracted or gotten what's called an STD. "STD" means a sexually-transmitted disease. We have a lot of these. I'm going to teach you the name of some of them, the slang of some of them. You'll hear them in movies. But most importantly, I want you to not get these. Please, do these little things to help you, even if you're really drunk. When you go to a pharmacy or you go to a place to get things, like condoms or something to help you, do not be ashamed, do not be scared. You are protecting yourself, and you are protecting your partner. There is no shame in protecting yourself and not dying. So, no matter what your culture was in your country, no matter what your parents think - you want to protect yourself, so please. "She won't get sick if you cover your dick." This means: Wear a condom. Come on. It takes two seconds, just flip that on and you're ready to pounce. Rawr. So, wear a condom, guys. Do it. It's easy, it's fun. There's many different flavours, you can get different colours, they can glow in the dark, condoms, wear one. You're not going to have to have a baby you don't want and you're not going to get a disease, hopefully. So, ladies, this is for you. Unfortunately, if we get pregnant we're the ones that have to keep the baby and the men disappear and have their fun, but we're stuck with the baby. So, most of the forms of birth control, this means stopping to have a child, are for women because it's our responsibility, it's our body. No matter what anyone says, you have control of your body, not anyone else. So, we have many different methods that we can use to control if we have a baby, if we don't. Now, the most popular one, it's been around for a long time, it's called "the pill". The pill is a pill, like a tablet that we take every day and it prevents us getting pregnant because it prevents the eggs from coming into the uterus and making contact with the sperm. I'll explain all that later, but basically it's called the pill and it prevents us from getting pregnant. Yes. Another one like the pill is called "the patch". Now, the pill has been around since the 1960s in America. The patch is fairly new. It's basically a sticker you put on your body, and hormones are released into your body, and again, it prevents you from making the eggs, so the sperm and the eggs don't make contact and don't have a baby. We have another thing called "the morning after pill". Now, this is different than the birth control pill because the morning after pill is taken the morning after you have sex or intercourse. So let's say that you didn't use a condom and you are not on any birth control-this happens, no problem-you can go to the pharmacy, you can go to the drugstore, you can go to the doctor and you can ask for the morning after pill. Again, this will stop any further egg and sperm connections, it's 100% legal, reliable, and safe. […]

Contraceptive, pill - Medical Definition and Pronunciation
Contraceptive, pill Contraceptive, pill: Commonly called the pill, combined oral contraceptives are the most commonly used form of reversible birth control in the United States. This form of birth control suppresses ovulation (the monthly release of an egg from the ovaries) by the combined actions of the hormones estrogen and progestin. If a woman remembers to take the pill every day as directed, she has an extremely low chance of becoming pregnant in a year. But the pill's effectiveness may be reduced if the woman is taking some medications, such as certain antibiotics. Besides preventing pregnancy, the pill can make periods more regular. It also has a protective effect against pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), an infection of the fallopian tubes or uterus that is a major cause of infertility in women, and against ovarian and endometrial cancers. Birth control pills are considered safe for most women but they carry some risks. Current low-dose pills have fewer risks associated with them than earlier versions. But women who smoke, especially those over 35, and women with certain medical conditions such as a history of blood clots or breast or endometrial cancer, may be advised against taking the pill. The pill may also contribute to cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure, blood clots, and blockage of the arteries. Combined oral contraceptive - Medical Meaning and Pronunciation
Combined oral contraceptive Combined oral contraceptive: Commonly called the pill, combined oral contraceptives are the most commonly used form of reversible birth control in the United States. One of the biggest questions has been whether the pill increases the risk of breast cancer in past and current pill users. An international study published in the September 1996 journal Contraception concluded that women's risk of breast cancer 10 years after going off birth control pills was no higher than that of women who had never used the pill. During pill use and for the first 10 years after stopping the pill, women's risk of breast cancer was only slightly higher in pill users than non-pill users. Effective Male Birth Control (Without Condoms!) By 2017
Although a veritable cornucopia of birth control options exists for women, men currently only have the condom available to them — which is unfair, if you think about it, because it takes two to create a wriggling human life. Fortunately, science may have finally come up with a contraceptive equalizer: the elusive male birth control. Male birth control has existed as a scientific possibility for years now. However, because it's not exactly profitable, the pharmaceutical industry has essentially shoved it aside while looking to engorge its profit margins in an avaricious celebration of capitalism. Despite this lack of substantive funding, the Parsemus Foundation recently announced a reversible form of non-hormonal male birth control called Vasalgel is proving effective in a baboon study. Safe, Effective Male Birth Control is Closer Than You Might Think As of now, if you would like to do all of the sex things with someone of the opposite gender… Read more According to a press release: Three baboon subjects from the original study have now had Vasalgel for 6 months... To make sure that it is still working prior to reversal, we decided to give all of the males an opportunity to mate with females to ensure that no pregnancies occur. Each of the three male baboons was moved into enclosures with 10-15 females (yes, that's 10-15 each!) a month ago. And the good news? So far no pregnancies. But they will remain with the females for at least a few more weeks just to be sure. Vasagel functions like a temporary vasectomy: in the procedure, a polymer contraceptive is injected directly into the vas deferens — the tube through which sperm is transported — blocking any sperm that attempts to travel through. If a man wishes to restore the flow of sperm, he can get a second injection to flush the polymer out. (The Parsemus Foundation press release says they'll attempt to flush the Vaselgel out of the baboons next month, and the procedure has proven effective in a prior rabbit study). According to the foundation's FAQ page, they hope to start human trials in 2015, and, "if everything goes well and with enough public support," they hope to get Vasalgel on the market by 2016-2017. As Samantha Allen points out at the Daily Beast, this could change the entire way we conceptualize birth control. Since the advent of contraception (which was a really, really long time ago), we've "been approaching birth control as a way of temporarily preventing fertilization inside a woman's body," she notes. But Vasalgel and other treatments like it show that that's not necessarily the only way to prevent pregnancy. We can, as she puts it, "block sperm at the source." Having a multitude of options makes sense: again, it takes two to get someone pregnant, so why should women alone bear the entire responsibility for avoiding unwanted pregnancies? Especially now, when a war is continually being waged on women's reproductive autonomy under the flimsy auspice of "sincerely held religious beliefs," it would be interesting to see how male contraception is treated. As the saying goes: "If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament." If men could have semi-permanent contraception procedures, would their insurance coverage constitute a violation of religious beliefs? Somehow I doubt it.
